After trying Eugenio Suarez at shortstop during Spring Training, the Reds seem to be moving forward with Suarez as their top choice at the position during the regular season. “It’s looking like he’s going to end up being the everyday shortstop,” Reds general manager Nick Krall told reporters (including Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer). “He has played well, he has moved really well at short. He’s made all the plays in the field. He’s done everything you need him to do.”
Suarez is no stranger to the position, having played 183 games as a shortstop during his seven Major League seasons. However, only seven of those appearances have come since the start of the 2016 season, as Suarez settled in as the Reds’ everyday third baseman in large part because of his defensive struggles as a shortstop — Suarez posted a – 9.1 UZR/150 and -14 Defensive Runs Saved over 1463 2/3 innings as a shortstop in 2014-15.
Though Suarez has lost 15 pounds over the winter, it remains to be seen just how effective he’ll be with the glove at his new/old position, and it’s probably safe to assume the Reds are prepared to accept some level of defensive shortcomings in the hope of improving the infield as a whole. With Suarez at third base, Cincinnati would have deployed Mike Moustakas at second base and then one of Kyle Farmer, Kyle Holder, Max Schrock, or Mike Freeman as shortstop, but the plan is now to use Moustakas at his old third base position and former fifth-overall pick Jonathan India might break into the big leagues as a second baseman.
No decisions have been formally made for the Reds prior to Opening Day, as the team is still waiting on a pair of notable health situations within its position-player mix. Joey Votto is still recovering from COVID-19 and might need an IL stint to give him more time to fully ramp up, while Nick Senzel has missed the last two Spring Training games due to a mild groin strain. Krall said Senzel is day-to-day with the injury.
The rotation has also been hit by the injury bug, as Sonny Gray and Michael Lorenzen will begin the season on the injured list. Pitching coach Derek Johnson told the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Bobby Nightengale and other reporters that after Opening Day starter Luis Castillo, the Reds’ rotation will feature Tyler Mahle, Wade Miley, Jose De Leon, and Jeff Hoffman in a to-be-determined order (though Mahle will likely be the No. 2 starter). The Reds are optimistic that neither Gray or Lorenzen will miss much time, and despite the presence of De Leon and Hoffman as extra starters, Johnson said the club isn’t planning to eventually adopt a six-man rotation.
Cats and dogs, living together, mass hysteria.
Don’t forget human sacrifices
So be good! For goodness sake. Woooaaahh somebody’s comin!
I don’t even want to think about what his UZR and DRS numbers are gonna be.
I can’t believe Suarez was thought to be a legitimate option
Manager went to the owner and was like- hey, I just read this on a message board, but what if we move suarez to short ??
Owner- idk….
if you move him over you won’t have to pay anyone else.
Owner- done !
That’s the worst starting rotation I’ve seen. Gray and lorenzen can’t get healthy soon enough
that Lorenzen getting back helps the rotation is a bad thing
@Dark, always a troll. Yes, a good pitcher usually helps a rotation.
he’s a nice RP. didnt look that good in the rotation in the spring.
Last year was Bauer Castillo Gray Disco Miley to open season. Maybe the greatest season opening decline ever ? Surely in recent memory
Disco was pretty awful, Gray will miss one start. Mikey Biceps too. They’ll be fine, even without Bauer
I’m not too optimistic about Miley either, but they signed him last offseason because they needed immediate rotation depth and had no lefties in the rotation, and the only lefty on the staff was Garrett in the bullpen. They should eventually have lefty prospect Lodolo in the rotation but probably not until next season after Miley is gone.
When did you become a fan? Last year? I could take you back to those halcyon days in 2016 when the Reds starting lineup featured the likes of John Lamb, and Wendy Peralta, and Dan Straily was our #1 guy. GTFOH with that worst lineup ever nonsense.
You mean the same year Dan Straily won 14 games and then we flipped him for Castillo? Yeah what a bum…
Been a fan for 20 yrs; GTFOH with your weak personal attacks
Also, Wandy, not Wendy, Peralta started exactly zero games for the Reds, or for anyone, in his career
If you’re going to question people’s knowledge as fans maybe get your own crap straight first
Imagine had they not signed Moose. They’d have Suarez at 3B, India at 2B, and an extra $16M to spend on a real SS.
Name the SS they could’ve signed for $16M that has better offensive production than Moustakas. I definitely won’t hold my breath.
Defense is a thing, too. Ask any pitcher.
Sure, if your only concern is getting more hitting out of SS, then you can sign anyone.
But if you are interested in real-life baseball, a guy like Didi makes 10x more sense than moving Suarez to SS, Moose to 3rd, and India to 2nd.
Iglesias. For less than $16-mil.
Lol. If you think reds woulda had an extra 16 mil that way – u haven’t been paying attention
A third baseman at 3rd, a third baseman at short, a third baseman at 2nd, a third baseman in center, a third baseman in right. Trade for Brian Anderson, put him in left. Get Matt Davidson and put him on the mound. We got a team!
La Tortuga can play 3B and C. he can catch for them.
And an infielder in CF!
Nebraska, how many times are you going to say this? It gets funnier each time
Maybe the Reds would be interested in Matt Carpenter……..
Rotation starting out is scary bad. Hopefully Gray and Lorenzen heals quickly.
After injuries, the Reds starting rotation is still better than the Cubs …
Jeff Hoffman lol
He is my husband. Take it back or eat a fat one.
That’s funny stuff. Not enough ladies come out for their man like that, well done.
This red team is going to be really really bad. I know your not suppose to put stock in spring training record but reds are worst in league, have the worst manager in league, surely one of the worst rotations and no short stop.
They better draft and trade well. Good returns for Castillo Gray and Suarez is about any red fan has to look forward to this season
You really think the rotation is awful? Wow man bold statement. The defense will struggle but staff will be just fine and the offense will be better than last season
Reds paid Miley knowing they had Mahle coming up also knowing Mahle can throw heat too. Mahle and Antone do have some hype around em both neither were ever regarded as top of rotation pieces. And gray is hurt a lot as is Miley and he’s old too. Way too many question marks with no depth.
Some guy named John Smoltz said this spring that the Reds have a WELL ABOVE AVERAGE starting rotation. You’re sleeping on Mahle and Antone (who hasn’t even cracked the rotation). Gray is hardly “hurt a lot” and they have a ton of depth.
Sa-wing batter, Sa-wing
they might be bad, but could still be fun to watch with all the 3B everywhere.
As fun as pitchers hitting.
I think that a rotation of Gray, Castillo, Mahle, Miley & Antone/Lorenzen is good enough. Half of the bullpen looks good too with Garrett, Sims, Doolitle and Antone/Lorenzen. Bench looks deep. If the key guys perform well this season (Suarez, Moose & Castellanos) my only concerns will be the Manager, the SS defense and Votto still a regular.
I heard a long interview with Krall from the other day. Guy is completely clueless and in over his head. He first claimed that Geno at SS was the plan ALL ALONG throughout the off-season, which sounded hard to believe. Later in the interview, he contradicted himself by saying they tried to sign DiDi, Semien and other SSs this off-season
Right ! Nothing more scary than that for reds fans ! There only hope for NOT ANOTHER 5 YEAR REBUILD is that they get good value and excellent evaluation of players coming in when they unload Suarez, gray, and Castillo as well as pick 4x in roughly top 50 picks this year and no doubt at top of 22 draft.
They could easily turn into a young exciting team real soon or have a bunch more prospects who never pan out and kroll is in charge of however all that plays out.
I’m rooting for Padres and royals this year and would rather see reds implode than win 75/80 games.
Maybe I will be surprised, but I doubt that the Reds are a playoff contender. They should do exactly what you recommended. They can get a king’s ransom for Castillo, Gray & Suarez.. In three years, their young guys will still be on the team, and they’d have a much better chance to be competitive.
The Reds will never move forward until they accept the reality that Votto is done. Just eat the money (going to have too anyway) and cut him.
Genuinely curious, who would you rather have playing 1B? Cause like you said, you’re still going to be paying him
1b – Moose
2b – India
3b – Suarez
SS – Holder (can’t hit but solid defense)
What will Reds do with Aquino? And if he makes opening day roster will he be a significant contributor over the course of the season? Asking for a Fantasy Baseball friend.
My guess…he’ll be on the roster until Akiyama is off the IL and then be cut
Would not look at him for any fantasy value whatsoever
TY. “My friend’s” final pick in Nl only Draft for a Bench spot. Aquino or Herrera (and I’m a Phillies fan)..
