The Padres claimed Jordan Humphreys off waivers from the Giants and will add him to the 40-man roster, per the team. To make room on the 40-man, Jose Castillo was placed on the 60-day injured list. Castillo will soon undergo Tommy John surgery.
Humphreys was an 18th round draft choice of the Mets in the 2015 June draft. He missed all of the 2018 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, returning to make just a handful of appearances in the minors for the Mets in 2019. The Mets traded the right-hander to the Giants in August for Billy Hamilton. That would turn out to be Humphreys’ initiation into baseball’s nomad class. There are always a couple of players who get caught in the waiver wire carousel each winter, and Humphreys is one of this year’s contestants.
He was designated for assignment in November, at which point the Indians claimed him. When the Indians claimed Harold Ramirez, Humphreys was DFA’ed again. The Giants brought him back, claiming the 24-year-old from Cleveland. Presumably to make room for the José Álvarez signing, the Giants waived Humphreys again. Humphreys has now twice been a member of the Giants’ organization without ever suiting up for San Francisco in a game. Given the depth in San Diego, it will be a little surprising if Humphreys finds his ultimate home in San Diego, but at least for now, he will become the 40th man on the Padres’ 40-man roster.

Hope this kid could stick around long enough to debut with a club. Maybe he makes his way back to Queens..

The Padres should consider Cole Hamels. Cole Hamels will be a great addition to any rotation in baseball. Cole Hamels has a great track record of success, leading-man looks, and five or six years left in the tank. Best of all? He can be signed at a very reasonable price. A.J. Preller, take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and get Cole Hamels today!

Hold on. Did you just say 37 year old who has seen a decline in velocity and hasn’t been healthy in 3 years would be a great pick up and has 5 or 6 years left?

Guys, we found Cole Hamels’ burner account!

I agree. Love to see Cole playing for his hometown.

Cole Hamels.
Ryan W
I would take him on a minor league contract as a possible 6th-7th inning option.
Jasona9
Cole Hamels? The guy that grew up in Rancho Bernardo (San Diego County) and admitted to rooting for the Dodgers over the Padres. HARD PASS.

Just the way he’s been tossed around, I hope Jordan Humphreys wins 20 games this season. His SO:BB is very good although he hasn’t played in advanced competition.
Deleted_User
No one cares if he wins 20 games. Probably means the offense went off in all of his starts. Which, unless he helps his cause with a couple home runs, he has no control over.

Its like Farhan treats this as one big fantasy team with how often he uses the waiver wire. He must love how there is no FAB cap in the bigs.

The Giants claimed him last week. I really wish there were rules that require teams to keep a claimed player for some period of time. Not a full season like the Rule 5 draft, but something that makes teams think a little more when making claims; instead of simply grabbing whomever they can because they’re worried they might not find somebody better.
CNichols
I mean being on a 40 man has to be better than getting outrighted, right? I’m sure it’s a bummer for the player who’s moving from organization to organization, but he’s staying on a 40 man and there’s players that would kill to get added to the roster.
DarkSide830
yeah I dunno why people are bothered by wiavers in spots. if imagine staying on the roster is a good thing.

Every year teams claim players for the sole purpose of DFA’ing them in the hopes they’ll pass through waivers and they can keep them in their own system. I don’t see how that is a good thing nor is it a necessary requirement to keep a player onto one of the 40-man rosters.
If a team actually wants a guy on their 40-man, then yeah, claim him, but they can put in rules to prevent claim-and-release.
Lurking
A team can want a player one day, and decide a week later they want another player more
The fact the giants claimed him 2x already speaks to the fact they like him, he’s just 41-42 on the depth chart. They like someone else more
Jean Matrac
Lurking:
No, he’s not 41-42 on the depth chart, he’s more like 27 through about 30. But he’s out of options and the the Giants apparently don’t see him making the ML roster out of ST. But they do like him enough to want him in Sacramento.
dvmin98
Why? He’s getting paid regardless. Plus he’s just moving across town since both teams play in Arizona. I think he’s good. Stays on a 40-man squad. Would you rather him be DFA’d and get sent to minor league camp?
JohnJasoJingleHeimerSchmidt
These kind of moves are cheap, safe ways for teams to build organizational depth. While it’s probably unfortunate for the Humphreys household, it happens to a half-dozen guys every winter. Look no further than Joel Payamps this winter.
Humphreys is one of those guys that is too good not to be claimed by teams, but also the first on the chopping block when the team needs a roster spot for someone else.
While your rule favors the player, it also hurts the group as a whole. If I claim Humphreys, then I either have to cut someone else that I either need or a better prospect OR I can’t make necessary roster moves.
Both of those are worse than Humphreys being in the roster tornado.
bobtillman
The Padres will waive him, the Rays will claim him, and he’ll toss 30 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Sounds about right

Well padres signed P Jake odorizzi to a 2 ur contract with player option

Can we update the colors, please? Most of us Padres fans would like to move on from years of stank of teams and uniforms.

The people at MLB trade Rumors need to get with the times and realize that blue is. no longer the Padres color.

It’s funny that, when Zaidi claimed Humphreys, it was called a dumpster dive by some, but, when Preller claims him, it’s not.
