I’m so over k%, velo, spin rate etc.. does it not matter if someone knows how to pitch??
mils100
No, the best pitcher is always the one who throws the hardest w /great peripherals but went 2-9 with a 6 era last year.
I agree w/ you. These things matter but now too many people on this board treat them as if they are all that matters.
Samuel
All that matters is what any player is doing to help his team win a game every time he’s on the field – within the framework he’s been asked to play on the team. That’s how winning players think, and that’s how the majority of players on winning teams perform.
In a quality company, when the boss asks you to do Job A you do that the best you can. He/she doesn’t call you in at review time and compare your performance to the person doing Job B. Job Titles at multiple places of business might be the same, but the roles and responsibilities of the jobs are always different.
Looking at overall statistics and comparing people from one team that plays a style of baseball to people on another that plays a different style, is for people that don’t understand that baseball is a team sport. It does not exist for individuals trying to buttress their statistics. Fans watch to root for their team to win….not to see what statistics a player is compiling that game. Sure, the agents and fantasy league players may see it that way. However, the Managers, Coaches, and Owner only care about one stat – W vs. L…..did we get to the playoffs…..and if so, how far?

In 1967 Carl Yastremski won the Triple Crown, and “led” his teammates to the AL pennant for the first time in 21 years. He was hero, a celebrity, and a media darling.
In ensuing years the Sox didn’t fare as well. Players became disgruntled. It came out that the majority of Yastremski’s teammates didn’t care much for him – they considered him a “me first” player. They had a saying to describe him:
“Carl can compute his updated Batting Average while running to first base”.

The ball Ball Four wasn’t kind to Yaz.
Gothamcityriddler
Yaz actually tied Killebrew w/44HR’s in 67 -who the MLB logo silhouette may or may not be based on, I say it is – so in my book the last triple crown winner in the AL before Cabrera did in 12 was the great Frank Robinson. Just saying.

I see your point, but can’t agree. Baseball has such a high level of odd outcomes. A pitcher can hang a curve in the middle of the zone, and a hitter can miss it; pop it up, or foul it off. Then a pitcher can throw a nasty pitch, located exactly where he wants it. and the hitter just happens to guess right, drops the head, and knocks it out.
The only way to compensate for that is to judge a pitcher’s talent, like velocity and spin rate. Or his ability to get guys to swing and miss, or his ability to keep runners off the bases. Things like having a great spin rate is part of knowing how to pitch.
I do agree that velocity alone is overrated. But what isn’t, is seeing differences in velocity in guys that already know how to pitch. Like a guy that’s starting to struggle, and has a drop in velo. Or the reverse, where a guy improves and you see an uptick in velo. It’s all just more information that helps analyze who is a good pitcher and who isn’t.

Woodruff for Cy? Two teams from the AL West in. yeah, no way.
RunDMC
He’s good, but I don’t think he’ll even be the best in his rotation. #CorbinBurnes Pretty bold to pick anyone over deGrom throwing 102 mph already.
DarkSide830
yeah Woodruff is a nice pitcher i just think people get a little crazy with their projections on him sometimes. cant pick him in a league with DeGrom, Mad Max, Bauer, and more.
jimthegoat
Why not trade Gallo for the best offer available? Beats losing him for nothing.
Why is it that any time a top prospect doesn’t break camp with the big club, people accuse the team of manipulating service time, even if the player was called up in September of the prior season, has never played above A-ball or struggled in Spring Training?
Dodger Dog
I don’t know where Rufus is from but I’d KILL for a $10 beer at the ballpark.
Technically correct
I don’t know the exact cost, but have you heard of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes? I’d be willing to bet that all prices are much more reasonable. You can even get Dodger Dogs, but we all know you’d rather kill someone than drive 48 miles east.

Silver
3:04 “Ae you disappointed with the direction the “comments” sections have taken? Used to be a great place to swap stories and info… Pretty snarky and negative anymore.”
I do like the fact that Silver got “snarky” into the conversation. Maybe, just maybe if the maroons didn’t outnumber the MLB fans who actually understand the game by about 8 to 1 we’d have less snarkiness & negativity. What say you?
DarkSide830
that would make sense. Pat Maroon probably isnt that knowledgeable about the MLB being a hockey player.
Dad
I wish the Cardinals would release Carpenter and sign Jedd ( the spit sprinkler )Gyorko. He couldn’t be worse!
And pitchers, some that throw left handed would be great!
