So, there was a question about whether or not the Tigers would keep their Rule 5 pick Akil Baddoo on their roster. He’s had a great spring, playing in 16 games with 40 plate appearances, hitting 4 homers, 8 walks, 11 strikeouts for a .341 average.
I think it’s obvious they are going to keep him by how many games he’s played in. Seems like they want to give him as much exposure to the major league game in Spring so that he is as ready as can be for the regular season. He’s never played above high-A, so he needed this little crash course.

That was a pretty lame answer to “Why were pitchers in the 1970s and 1980s throwing so many complete games, and now it is almost unheard of?”
Complete games are drastically down since that time. It is a lot more complicated than “We remember the guys who survived.”
Also, that is the kind of question you can just google. you should join these chats for expert opinions, such as which girl scout cookie is the best.
TroyVan
I think it’s a combination of overuse by managers and an overabundance of caution by agents, probably more so of the latter.

No Adel or Marsh question >.< it's a record

Imagine how often Akil Baddoo would be mentioned by MLBTRs if he wore a Yankee uniform? Probably as much as Frazier or Andujar.
TroyVan
His production has definitely been a huge surprise, considering he’s never played above high-A ball. I just hope that he can continue once the season starts.
One writer speculates that Baddoo staying with the Tigers will cost Victor Reyes his roster spot. Not sure about that…. Reyes seems pretty safe to me.

Baddoo’s quality of pitcher faced was only 6.2.
That’s kind of low…..

Multiply the time of everyone who had to read about Girl Scout cookies plus the baseball question that went unanswered and you realize why those questions are a big waste.
TroyVan
I wanted to know about the hierarchy of pitching coaches. Is the pitching coach the manager of all pitchers? Or, just the starters? If he is the manager of all pitchers, then the bullpen coach reports to him?
It went unanswered, but it’s fine. I like Girl Scout cookies, too.
Hudson6
Stay away from those girl scouts’ cookies Troy!

Pitching coach is responsible for all
pitchers. Bullpen
coach is his assistant
and advises on the
relief pitchers…..

I think we should have gotten a Girl Scout cookie poll. Wasted opportunity.

Great idea!

Boston will not be sellers in July. Anyone who is writing them off isn’t paying attention.. The pitching is solid, and the offense is still upper tier. If Dalbec is as good as he projects to be, it will be even better.. Meanwhile, the “experts” pretend that the Yankees are locks….with that sketchy group of starters.

I had the same faith in the Tigers back at the end of Dombrowski’s tenure and at the beginning of Avila’s. Still had a solid rotation along with the likes of Cabrera and Victor Martinez. Didn’t understand how deplorable the farm system was and how the bad contracts affected their ability to come out of their funk by way of free agency.
The only difference between those Tigers and your Red Sox is that the Tigers recognized they needed a full teardown and rebuild while Boston didn’t.
We need a moniker for the condition Dombrowski leaves his teams when he is fired….

Theo slightly mentioned rebuild to the Boston media once and the fans
went ballistic…..

‘Because there’s a strong belief that an increase of that size is more likely to contribute to injury…’
Not targeting Steve specifically, but this is an outdated take. Innings totals are dictated by the state of a player’s body/arm heading into the season, not whatever they did last year. If they prepare their body/arm to throw 200 innings in the season there’s no reason to assume last year’s workload would have any impact on that.
Throwing 200 innings is a good indicator of capability, but players don’t magically retain that arm strength and stamina from season to season even if they are throwing year round in some capacity.
The guy getting shut down for a month comparison isn’t a good one because when a guy gets shut down for a month he loses strength and then has to build back up. If a guy only threw 70 innings last year but spends the offseason prepping for 200 and is full steam ahead going into the season how are those situations similar?

Worth mentioning that Nolan Ryan had a break between youth baseball and the majors due to military service. The hiatus is said to have allowed his arm to strengthen and also greatly helped his longevity.
