In the minutes after we posted our annual list of out-of-options players earlier today, several readers pointed out players they believed to have been omitted. In following up with various team and agency sources around the league, it became clear that there’s some uncertainty as to how the 2020 season will impact some players’ number of minor league options.
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch explores the situation at greater length, reporting that Cardinals outfielder Justin Williams isn’t even sure whether he has a minor league option remaining. Neither, according to Goold, are the Cardinals themselves. Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register writes that the Angels are in a similar spot with right-hander Jaime Barria. Goold lists the Cubs’ Adbert Alzolay as another player currently in this state of limbo.
The reason? The commissioner’s office, the MLB Players Association and Major League teams still need to determine whether last year’s shortened slate of games counts as a full season under the league’s option structure. An arbiter is expected to make a final decision sometime this month, per Fletcher. Goold writes that a decision is expected “any time now,” adding that the Cardinals have been awaiting clarity for weeks.
By rule, players are given three option years after being selected to a team’s 40-man roster. Being optioned to the minor leagues, even if it’s out of Spring Training, counts as an option year — so long as the player spends 20 days down on the farm. Players are granted three option years, but there’s no limit to the number of times they can be optioned back and forth throughout the course of one of those individual option seasons.
It is possible for some players to be granted a fourth option year. This is most typical among players who have missed considerable time due to injury. Players who are on the 40-man roster and have exhausted those three minor league options before accruing five full seasons of play can be granted this exemption. A “full” season by that definition entails 90 or more days on an active Major League or Minor League roster (but not the injured list).
As Goold explains with regard to Williams, he fell shy of 90 days on an active roster in 2013, 2014 and 2019. His fifth “full” season would’ve been 2020 — you can see where this is going — but the season itself was not 90 days in length. Beyond the fact that the season itself was only 67 days long, players who were “optioned” weren’t sent to the minor leagues to compete in games but rather to alternate training sites to participate in simulated game settings against others in the organization.
Generally speaking, Major League clubs are keenly aware of the out-of-options players on other rosters, but it was clear in asking around today that there’s presently a disconnect because of last year’s shortened season. Even if you were to downplay the significance of one team not being clear on another team’s player, the reports from Goold and Fletcher underscore the confusion surrounding the issue.
It seems something of this nature should have been planned for during last year’s return-to-play negotiations, but as we saw with the months-long back-and-forth between MLB and the MLBPA, the March agreement under which the season was renewed had many issues that were not fully addressed. It’s not necessarily a surprise that 2021 option status wasn’t a major talking point up front, but it’s nonetheless a bit perplexing that an entire offseason has elapsed without a resolution. Minor league options — or a lack thereof — will be a considerably driving factor in spring roster moves around the game over the next four weeks.
Halo11Fan
If Barria has options the Angels can add another pitcher. This is a big deal.
For Love of the Game
If you were not optioned to the minors but to the alternative training site last year, it should count as minors unless you were being paid the major league minimum of $563k (but prorated).
Halo11Fan
For the love, I’m betting you are correct.
brodie-bruce
@flg & halo being the betting man i am i’d take that bet in essence training sites were used a sudo aaa team
Ducky Buckin Fent
Bro.
I’m not a grammar Nazi. But…”sudo”, bro? That’s not good.
brodie-bruce
i suck at english hence why i’m a carpenter and not a writer lol btw ducky gl to your yankees this year bro. i really think a lot of peps are under estimating your team iirc last year didn’t you have like your whole roster on the dl and still barely finished behind tb with just a aaa roster.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I shouldn’t correct anyone’s spelling, man. As a form of instant karma I noticed a pretty bad spelling mistake of mine on a different thread from today lol.
First, last, & only time I’ll engage in that. I don’t think it’s my wheelhouse.
Anyway.
Lotta injuries the last few years, man.
TB won it fair & square though. They pretty much handed us our rumps all summer. Man…I think we beat them… twice? All year. Trying not to remember it too clearly, serious.
Yanks should be one of the better Not The Dodgers teams.
As a union carpenter, I tip my hat to you because I know you guys worked all this last year, too.
Thanks.
I may not be a union guy, but I have respect for everyone out there building. Especially last year.
I apologise for the dumb spelling thing. Made me look like the stupid one. I’ll wear it.
brodie-bruce
hey all good dude i know english is my weakness and can take away from my post sometimes and i’m trying to work on it. also yes tb won it fair and square honestly they were better built for a 60 game season i just believe nyy are better than tb in a full 162 (and tb my #2 team and that’s because there always the underdog). i was just saying i was impressed what the yankees did last year yes guys get hurt but having 23/25 guys on tor starting roster are out at the same time and still was in striking distance of the rays. also shows me how “weak” nyy farm is although i judge farms differently. just because the experts rank your farm low due that you lack a bunch of top 50 prospects or what not but provided good depth and hold you over till you guys get back to health or keep them fresh is worth a higher ranking imo.
also thanks for appreciating my trade without us in construction we’re all living in caves and tents
Ducky Buckin Fent
We’re not writing essays over here.
So.
Yeah, man.
The Ray’s. Ridiculous. Always competitive, somehow. & yeah always the underdog. I find it impossible to not respect them. I’m entirely convinced that even though they lost Snell & Morton they’ll still somehow win 90 games.
& you got that right, man.
Shelter is a pretty big deal.
brodie-bruce
lol your right we’re not writing essays and i have a tendency to ramble but i’m looking forward to seeing this years races in mlb. especially nyy, tor and tb that’s going to be fun to watch as an outsider also cws the nle are interesting and is as for real and overtake lad. it’s unlikely sd win the nlw but lad is not a prefect team either
Nothing
Any player left in limbo like this is stuck taking a HUGE L
Halo11Fan
Cherrry, the team is left in just as much limbo as the player.
LordD99
One could easily argue it’s the team in greater limbo. The player eventually will know what team he is with, meaning either his current organization or a new one, but the teams were forced to make roster decisions on who to keep, who maybe to trade, which free agents they could sign, all based on 40 man roster spots intersecting with a list of out-of-option players.
HalosHeavenJJ
Exactly. And in our case, Barria is a decent starting option in a year in which starting depth is likely to be tested more than usual.
brodie-bruce
or if the halos your starting depth is always tested. in all seriousness if i were the halos gm i’d be taking a hard look at my training staff there is no reason why your guys pitchers are dropping like flies.
RyÅnWKrol
Every organization has a long list of arm injuries. Torn UCL’s are the product of overuse and improper mechanics at the youth level. Over 4,000 TJS’s performed and most of them on pitchers 19 and under. Stop letting kids play travel ball. If there’s anything pointing to the Angels in this, it’s probably drafting and acquiring young arms that already have major red flags.
brodie-bruce
@ryan that’s a very good take i didn’t think of i remember herring an interview with smoltz saying them same things that kids are getting to specialized he went on to say reason he believed he had the career he had is that he played other sports than bb. he went on to say playing other sports built up other muscles that you can’t improve by just playing bb. i still believe that the halos trainers need to be looked at and now scouting department as well thanks to your take i looked over
Ducky Buckin Fent
That’s a good take, @lordd99.
I see Abreu isn’t on either list. I was sure he was out.
cainer18
My bum feels ok
mlb9229
Yeah this really should’ve been decided by the first full squad workout dates at the latest
Gothamcityriddler
So should’ve the DH but this is how MLB operates. They only have 3 speeds, slow, slower & slowest.
stevewpants
There’s two more, reverse and good old just sticking their head in the sand. It continues to be baffling how short sighted they are when it comes to allowing people to watch games. Hulu sling and youtube tv are gone, at least for my Brewers, I don’t know about other media markets. Making it cable, dish, or mlbtv and a vpn. If MLB is so worried about losing the next generation of baseball fans, STOP MAKING IT SO HARD TO WATCH THE GAMES! Let kids pay 99 cents per game so they can watch on the phones/tablets and interest in the game from the under 25 age group will skyrocket.
kellin
I totally wouldn’t have any problems paying the stupid annual fee to mlb.com if they allowed us to watch our home team games AT HOME.
Got a free mlb.com subscription from t-mobile a few years ago, and it ended up being completely useless to me. At least I can listen to the games on my SiriusXM subscription
Halo11Fan
I know what you mean. I had MLB network and Giants and A’s games were blocked out. The stadiums are about a five hour drive from here.
Spectrum carried the Giants games, but didn’t carry the A’s games.
I finally cancelled Spectrum and got YouTube TV. Now I can see the local games and other games on MLB TV.
Crazy.
User 4245925809
You can blame teams themselves for that and not mlb. looking to attempt dragging every dime they can, even if they alienate everyone in the process.
Thank goodness live in ‘flyover” country and not where 4-5 teams are in a blackout zone is all i can say.. life is better there is a lot more ways than 1!
brodie-bruce
a lot of these stupid blackouts are because of cable networks and the exclusive tv rights. what hulu, sling, yt, ect wanna get games they gonna have to offer up big deals like fox sports. i agree best thing for the sport is letting “kids” watch games on the devices also make it easier for kids to play the game. seems like unless your mid class or higher your not playing bb. least it seemed that way when i played ll i watched my old man pay close to 1k so me and my lil bro could play. i believe in business there is term called “acceptable losses” and making more games available and/or easier to play when a kid. while in the short term they may be huge losses but long run you see sustained profits and longevity to the sport. also i feel that if players went back to trying to put the ball in play would speed up the game right now it seems like the 3 options at the player are k walk or hr i’m a lifelong bb fan but the k walk or hr option makes for a boring game at home and at the stadium
yankees500
The MLB-MLBPA relationship is a joke. This should have been decided long ago before it became an issue for teams trying to construct their roster this spring. I have serious concerns about the state of the league until Manfred and Clark are replaced.
brodie-bruce
i agree but i think the rift is deep on all unions not just mlb. i’m a union carpenter and i see rifts between all the trades and contractors for various reasons but they all seem to fall into this giant my d is bigger than your d argument and the mlb is no different. both sides need to swallow a little pride and maybe eat some crow and get this stuff worked out. with the state of bb right now and being inept to get a new generation of fans can the mlb afford another strike. personally i think another strike might be the death nail for mlb another strike you’ll piss off all the older fans which a lot of might not come back (it took roids and a hr chase to bring us “oldies” back) and to the kids it would be who cares bb is a dinosaur sport anyways good radiance. *not sure if kids really feel that way about bb i’m just making an assumption on that as one of the reason mlb can’t bring in new fans”
Halo11Fan
I don’t believe it. Gotham and I agree on something. But I think it has more to do with lawyers and judges than baseball.
Gothamcityriddler
@halo11 Well since we can agree on something maybe there’s still hope for the country, Lol
Halo11Fan
Yes, I always prefer finding areas of agreement, believe it or not.
Halo11Fan
Imagine that. What kind of jerk has an issue with people who try to find common ground? What’s wrong with you?
User 4245925809
The new way of some I don’t have to name Halo.. They play on their phones all day, probably other things as well. Is there hope for this country?
brodie-bruce
halo pay him no mind he is a troll why can’t fans of other teams agree with each other even if we have distain for each other’s team
baseballpun
He hates women, so he’s clearly just a complete a-hole who should be ignored and banned.
brodie-bruce
can you please explain why it is fruity as you stated. last i checked were a country founded on halting each other but yet agreeing with each other some of the time.
also baseballpun is would love to agree with you but i can’t on the grounds that it would be fruity to do so.
bravesninersnation
Honestly it’s like what johnsilver said; these kids just stay on their phones and look at social media and get brain washed by it. Baseball isn’t growing because the newer generation aren’t being grown into it. I have a 2 year old son and another son on the way whom I plan to educate on sports, especially baseball since it’s my all time favorite. Baseball isn’t boring- it takes a lot of skill and I plan to continue to indoctrinate my love for the Braves and baseball to my kids. My 2 year old sits and watches baseball with me just fine- if only this new generation of parents would do that with their kids instead of just letting them run around with a phone on their hands and going on social media. I’m 31 turning 32 so in case anyone is wondering, no I am not an “old fart” lol
brodie-bruce
@ bravesninersnation careful with them comments you might get banned or cancelled lol. I agree with you bb isn’t a boring sport if you know what your watching and understand the strategy behind it. IMO what I think has made baseball boring is it’s a station to station game ran by stat nerds before you blast me I do believe in advance metrics but also letting guys play if I wanted to see a 100% analytical game then I would just watch a sim game on mlb the show. Yes use these adv. stats as tools and have importance on them but also let theses guys play. Tbh seems I like hs ball to il league it is more fun to watch because they focus on playing and trying for the next level. Opposed to seeing a scripted outcome on what do do because this electric box told me so. Btw I’m in my 30’s meself and watched this game flush away with station to station play and off player with bad d than just good overall players
Ducky Buckin Fent
It’s whole deal is to try cause divisiveness, @Halo11. So what you & @Riddler did horrified it.
Obviously, it feels jealousy when posters get along. That’s because no one likes it. Perhaps if I were a better person I would pity it.
Alas: I merely find it sometimes annoying.
bobtillman
It’s not surprising that many of us are confused by the option regulations. I mentioned before Theo Epstein readily admitted HE didn’t understand them….and that was in his Red Sox days, pre-Covid. I suspect MOST GM’s have a guy in the office who monitors these things. And they hope he can make sense of them.
Years ago, Marvin Miller was appalled at what little MLB mucky-mucks knew about labor issues, including those in the standard player contract. Doesn’t look like much has changed. And it looks like the MLBPA, which SHOULD have experts in these matters, doesn’t.
DarkSide830
it would be nice if they had a set criteria for it, though it would then be easy ti manipulate
baseball1010
There are more than 3 option years. P.A. gave that away .
HalosHeavenJJ
Another example of the complete failure of leadership in this sport. Starting with Manfred and extending to the MLBPA brass.
So teams didn’t know if they could use a DH or not until the last minute, now they don’t know who has options left. Front offices can’t operate this way.
There’s too much of the Congress type crap of packing everything into one bill so that the entire thing gets shot down. Start doing this stuff item at a time instead of lumping all together and get it done.
brodie-bruce
jj you make to much sense if we you do that how can we have the my d is bigger than your d argument but mlb and the pa rather bicker like 2 old ladies over a card game then really sit down put a bs aside and fix a broken sport. it’s kinda sad that those of us that post here have better solutions than the guys in charge. btw that’s not an insult to 90% of the posters here it’s an insult to the guys being paid good money to figure all this out not some random joe’s who’s jobs are anything but bb
Pauly2112
I believe Melbrys Viloria is out of options for KC if I’m not mistaken & with Pittsburgh’s need for a young catcher, first baseman, and OF help, maybe the Bucco’s & Royals can make a swap centering around Viloria, O’Hearn, & a young OF’er for a lotto ticket or 2 going back to KC.
jorge78
So if a player is on a major league team all year and DOESN’T get sent down during that year, is that still considered an option year?
So confusing…..
ABCD
It does not count as burning an option. A player can be sent down, but if he was up for 172 days during the season, it would also not count.
jorge78
Thanks!
bravesninersnation
Mickey C situation is getting worse and worse… he’s definitely going to lose his job. What’s gonna happen to the people who drew a blind eye to his allegations?
brodie-bruce
just like penn state years ago let’s see how much of this bs can we sweep under the rug/bed. thou i believe in the long run if those that let it go on admit it and say we dropped the ball on this we’re going to learn and improve on this and apologize for the mistakes would go a long way. we are a country that believes in second chances or are as a society just a bunch of hypocrites picking and choosing who should be forgiven.
bravesninersnation
Yeah unfortunately, I don’t think Mick gets away with it this time though. He’s gonna be the next Jared P orter
brodie-bruce
wasn’t say mick was getting out of this he is going to get burnt and deserve too i was more making reference to the the guys that looked the other way. in today’s era of instant news you can’t pull the stuff you could 20~30 years ago. back then you really had to do research on this stuff not go on fb or any other social media and get your info.
