The latest minor moves from around the sport…
- The Giants signed left-hander Phil Pfeifer to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to the team’s big league camp. (Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle was among those to report the news.) The Braves released Pfeifer earlier this week, more than two weeks after outrighting him to Triple-A. The southpaw has a 3.58 ERA and 27.26K% over 297 career innings in the minors, mostly working as a reliever and mostly pitching in the Braves organization. The Dodgers originally selected Pfeifer in the third round of the 2015 draft, back when current Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi was working as the Dodgers’ GM.

Nice get for SF…PP can be a solid multi-inning arm for them this season…

Nothing they do is going to save this staff from being a total disaster.
If spring training has showed anything, its that injuries and walks are going to be the major theme for this pitching staff throughout the season.

Spring training rarely shows anything as teams are feeling players out while getting starters healthy and in shape for the season. Now there’s a lot of other teams out there you can call a total disaster, but the Giants aren’t one of them. They have built a pretty strong farm and have millions and millions to dump into free agency next year and years beyond.

IDK, Balk, have you watched these games so far? Objectively, the pitching looks like what people from the outside looking in feared it would: A bunch of #4’s with a deep injury history looking really fragile and uninspiring.
I don’t disagree that the future will be bright, but the present looks bad, frankly.

Scottn59c…I have low expectations for the Giants this year and I’ve actually been quite surprised of how they have competed while rebuilding through terrible contracts. What I’m looking at are the newbies. They have some pretty decent players that can hit to build around in the near future, but unfortunately they will have to spend big on pitchers in fa. IMO I don’t see a disaster.

Braves are pretty good with relief pitching. I know Pfeifer will be 29 soon but why not keep him stashed at AAA? Only thing I can figure is they are trying to give him a chance to break a MLB roster.

Spring results are challenging to evaluate because it’s spring and teams are using this time differently than in the past. There appears to be more active development continuing at this level. That players are asked to work on “this” or “that” in game that could be contrary to shorter term performance.
It is however getting close to “go time” so if ever there was a time to look at spring performance it’s from now till opening day
