Mets right-hander Carlos Carrasco will pause his throwing regimen until next week, manager Luis Rojas revealed to reporters Wednesday (Twitter thread via The Athletic’s Tim Britton). Carrasco reported some soreness in his elbow, although Rojas said the organization isn’t overly concerned at this time. The longtime Indians righty says he has experienced similar soreness at a similar point in Spring Training in the past. For now, the club hopes to have Carrasco facing live hitters again by the end of next week. Jordan Yamamoto, Joey Lucchesi, Sam McWilliams and Sean Reid-Foley all stand as 40-man depth options. Carrasco, 34 later this month, was one of the Mets’ most notable offseason additions. He joined free-agent addition Taijuan Walker and righty Marcus Stroman, who accepted a qualifying offer, as additions to a Mets rotation that will also hope to have Noah Syndergaard back at some point midseason. Two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom, of course, will lead the group, and former first-round pick David Peterson pitched his way into the team’s plans with an impressive rookie showing in 2020.
Some more injury situations to keep an eye on around the league…
- Chris Davis has been down since last week due to a lower back strain, and Orioles general manager Mike Elias today told reporters that there’s still no timeline for when he’ll return to baseball activities (Twitter link via the Baltimore Sun’s Jon Meoli). He saw a specialist earlier in the week. Davis, who’ll turn 35 next week, missed the bulk of the 2020 season due to knee problems and was slowed by a hip injury in 2019 as well. He was likely ticketed for a somewhat limited role now, given the return of Trey Mancini and the emergence of several prospects at the MLB level (Ryan Mountcastle chief among them). With no timeline at the moment, it could be tough for Davis to be ready by Opening Day. The Orioles owe him $23MM in 2021 and 2022.
- Brewers infielder/outfielder Mark Mathias is headed for an MRI after injuring his shoulder in yesterday’s Cactus League game, manager Craig Counsell announced to reporters Wednesday (Twitter link via Andrew Wagner of the Wisconsin State Journal). There’s no official word yet on the extent of the injury, but Mathias will “miss some time” with the injury, which was sustained on a diving catch in the outfield. The 26-year-old made his MLB debut in 2020 and went 10-for-36 with three doubles in a brief look at the MLB level. He was 4-for-13 thus far in Spring Training and had been competing for a utility role with the club, but it sounds as though this setback could take him out of the running. In brighter news for Milwaukee fans, Counsell revealed that infielder Luis Urias’ hamstring issue is on the mend. Urias took batting practice yesterday and could be in a game by this weekend.
CubsWin108
Mets need to sign Cole Hamels.
Francys01
Somebody needs to sign him. Hamels could even play for the Cubs. I just want him in the majors. One of my favorite pitchers.
Canosucks
My other team the Angels should sign him.
They need SP badly
KCJ
I don’t know what his salary/contract demands have been, but It’s shocking that no one has signed him. I mean, couldn’t the Orioles, Blue Jays, Red Sox, or even the Rays afford to give him a shot? And that’s just one division! There’s gotta be at least 20+ teams around the league that should be willing to at least bring him to camp and see what he’s got left.
Yasiel Puig is still sitting out there too….that doesn’t make sense either, unless he’s holding out for a certain guarantee of $$ or playing time
Rsox
Depending on where the sexual assault lawsuit against Puig goes, no one is touching him with a 10 foot pole
Cosmo2
Puig is still out there cuz he’s not very good. League average hitting, below average fielding corner OFr in his 30’s. Fans just keep overvaluing him but the folks whose money is on the line, so to speak, know better. But fans keep overrating him then becoming confused when he doesn’t get signed.
pdxbrewcrew
That this site listed him in the “also” category of top free agents still available, behind Jedd Gyorko, says all anyone needs to know about what people think of Puig.
bigdaddyt
I do believe you misspelled blue jays
bhd360
How many lefties do you need? Ryu, Ray, Matz and Hamels?
VonPurpleHayes
I never want to see Hamels in a Mets uniform. I will vomit. Seriously though, not really a fit. Mets have plenty of SP depth.
baseballpun
You can never have too much SP depth.
VonPurpleHayes
@baseballpun While that’s true, there are roster limits. Adding Hamels would mean someone on the Mets has to go. Hamels will not be taking a job just to fill in during someone’s IL stint, not saying Carrasco is going on the IL, there’s nothing suggesting he definitely will.
The Mets roster is pretty solid, and it’s equipped to deal with an injury or two. I don’tt hink Carrasco will be missing significant time. If he is, that changes things.
Canosucks
I would have never gotten rid of Matz. Mickey **** Pic Calaway screwed up his release point and he has never been the same since.
Steven Matz
2021 Stats Wins 1 Loss 0 ERA 0.00 IP 5.0 this spring
Agree to small sample set but I bet they get him turned around.
They picked up Lee for the outfield who is going to be the next Keon Broxton. He has done nothing this spring but strike out which is what his previous numbers said he would do.
Don’t count your SP’s before they hatch which is why I was happy they got Taijuan Walker.
baseballpun
I don’t know the entirety of the Mets roster but I can’t believe there isn’t anyone on the 40-man who couldn’t be bumped or anyone in the bullpen who couldn’t go to AAA to make room for a guy like Hamels. Injuries are going to happen during the season.
its_happening
Did you bother to check the lineup the Phillies had in Matz’ start yesterday? Not exactly the Bronx Bombers with many prominent hitters not playing.
jim stem
Having watched MANY of Matz’ starts, his regression was very predictable.
He was unable to throw anything but his fastball for strikes and even those had the catcher’s glove chasing them across the zone.
All teams had to do was take anything that wasn’t a fastball and tee off. Add to that it was obvious he was constantly in his own head, beating himself up.
He pitches to his pitch count and once he gets into the 80’s, it’s real obvious he’s ready to come out and looking for his exit.
I wish him well and hope he wins comeback player of the year, but I think his biggest adjustment is just under his cap.
Ps. Callaway wasn’t the pitching coach for the Mets and entrusted his coaching staff with those details. I also think THAT was a big issue. I think Matz had three different pitching coaches the last 3 years!

While that’s true, there are roster limits.

I see that problem all the time. Fans are constantly demanding we sign everyone. But you have 12-13-14 pitching slots. 5 SPs, usually 7 RPs, and maybe one more this year. You can sign a guy with a 5.00 ERA, and he’ll be okay if you have a couple of injuries. But if you keep him on the roster, he’ll come at the expense of the #5-6 RP, delivering 65 innings of 4.50 ERA.
VonPurpleHayes
@baseballpun Hamels pitched what, 3 innings last year? That’s a huge gamble. You’re going to send someone down for that? Hamels would be perfect to add to a team with a young stuff in need of veteran experience. Mets don’t fit there.
seaver41
Have to agree- Matz was a mental midget (sorry, little person)on the mound.
AHH-Rox
Cole Hamels’ agent sure comments a lot on this site.
baseballpun
Which is why Cole Hamels hasn’t been signed yet.
mattblaze13
I think you mean chris davis
Shrutefarm
cubswin18, Yes, the rest of the National League East agrees with you
mookiesboy
Heck No. F him and Utley!
bobtillman
Chris Davis hasn’t “returned to baseball activities” since 2017.
AHH-Rox
Not fair. Striking out is a baseball activity.
chriscala
Lol
PutPeteinthehall
Chris Davis. Finally a contract worse than Heywards. I didn’t think it was possible.
Metsin777
Orioles want that Chris Davis insurance money
FredMcGriff for the HOF
Metsin7. I think your right on Chris Davis. I was just thinking “why don’t the Orioles just release him”? I will admit I used to really like the guy (who doesn’t like a power bat?). It’s sad his extension has been so bad for the Orioles. The guy has not been good for several years now.
Nuschler
If the Orioles release Chris Davis now they’ll owe him 100% of his contract even if there is a player strike in 2022. If they hold onto him they don’t have to pay him for those percentage of games. If they released him in 2019 they would’ve paid 100% of his salary last year (instead of 37% of it). Suffice it to say he’s not going anywhere unless he accepts a settlement to retire.
The Giants had to pay Zack Cozart 100% of his salary last year because they released him before spring training. If they held onto him they would’ve only had to pay him 37% of his salary and would have saved the team 7+ million dollars
Rsox
Insurance for what? In case he tries to play?
mike156
There’s a bit of tragedy about the Chris Davis story. He’s gone from having a 7.1 BWAR season (3rd in MVP voting) to Ray Oyler…without the glove.
Shrutefarm
mike156, tragedy for who? I can give you 161 million reasons why it’s not a tragedy for Davis. lol
KCJ
It’s amazing to me that he’s had the mental capacity to go up to the plate and hear 30,000+ boos every at-bat for the last 3-4 years while accepting 20+ million a year for his “poorformance”. Most guys would feel some sense of overriding guilt and debilitating anxiety for doing such a thing, forcing them to retire with the 50-100 million or so they’d already pocketed. Congrats to Chris, I guess.
baycommuter 2
The MLBPA can put a lot of pressure on a player in his situation not to retire.
Rangers29
Breaking: Rangers will allow 100% capacity in their stadium this season with masks required.
MetsFan22
Bro he got sore from his second Covid vaccine. It should be included in the article.
RunDMC
He must have been snappy with the nurse and gave it to him in his elbow.
MetsFan22
From Deesha on Twitter.
Carlos Carrasco has soreness in his elbow. He has been experiencing some body aches due to the second COVID-19 vaccine he received yesterday.
He’ll take a break from throwing for a few days. This is “nothing too concerning,” Luis Rojas said.
It’s really not that hard to look things up.
DarkSide830
wow, did he just knock someone not understanding the vaccine side effects? damn Rojas!
its_happening
It’s really not hard to realize DMC was just making a little joke. Calm down 4th place.
JoeBrady
It wasn’t ROTFL funny, but it was pretty good.

================================================================
That makes absolutely -0- sense.
Why would the manager of a team tell the press that Carrasco has an elbow issue, if the real reason is a Covid shot?
And why would the NYMs schedule a throwing session for a pitcher, the day after he gets his second shot? You would throw in the morning, get a shot in the PM, and then stay home for a day or two.
And why would they hold him back from throwing until the end of next week? The second shot only takes a few days to get over.
I’ll presume you are lying, or else Rojas is the biggest idiot in BB. However, since you mentioned looking things up, how about you look up what you just claimed, and share it with us?

Thank you!
JoeBrady
Thank you, but the article basically says that the Covid shot had nothing to do with the elbow soreness. But I can see the misunderstanding.
VonPurpleHayes
@MetsFan22 Sorry. Your source is incorrect. These are two separate issues. You can find quotes like this from multiple sources. This is from Justin Toscano:
“Mets manager Luis Rojas on Wednesday said Carrasco is dealing with elbow soreness believed to be caused by his last live batting practice outing — this, along with experiencing body aches after receiving the second COVID-19 vaccination shot on Tuesday. “
MetsFan22
You’re right I did a little more research. I still don’t think this will be a big deal. I don’t see the Mets worried at all

He got soreness in his elbow from batting practice. The vaccine soreness is a separate issue.
GarryHarris
I got every free agent prediction wrong this off season. Only Puig to Os and Cespedes to Reds left but I doubt that happens either.
BigFred
There’s something to be said for consistency. Congrats.
KCJ
Well, the Orioles are screwed. Chris Davis is going to miss some time at the beginning at the season…by the time he makes it back they’ll be most likely be in too deep of a hole for him to dig them out of
Shrutefarm
Sorry to hear the news about Carrasco. Hopefully, it’s nothing too serious.
Barkerboy
Uh oh. Carlos. Uh oh.
sadosfan
Best thing Chris Davis can do for the team is stay home. Don’t want that reminder/embarrassment walking around the clubhouse.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Have to wonder if Hamels’ health is the reason he’s unsigned. Could be wrong, but haven’t read anything about him throwing or holding a showcase for scouts.
As a Phillies fan, the last thing I wanna see is Hamels wearing a Mets uniform. Speaking of my Phillies, they should take a look at Hamels. It’s not like Moore and Anderson are the second comings of Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson.
