Marlins prospect Jazz Chisholm has won the opening day second base job. General Manager Kim Ng made the announcement on the radio, noting that Isan Diaz, Chisholm’s main competition for the role, will begin the year in Triple-A, per Jordan McPherson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald (Twitter links).
Chisholm, of course, was acquired via trade from the Diamondbacks for Zac Gallen at the 2019 trade deadline. Gallen’s spring injury aside, he has generally flourished in Arizona. Chisholm and the Marlins have work to do to make this deal look like a strong one for Miami. After finishing 2019 at Double-A with a .220/.321/.441 line, Chisholm made his Major League debut in 2020 under sub-optimal circumstances. In 62 plate appearances over 21 games, Chisholm hit just .161/.242/.321. He has game-changing speed, but the bat will need to follow to make good on his top prospect status. He is the Marlins’ 4th-ranked prospect, per Baseball America.
Diaz, meanwhile, was a slight favorite to start the year at second, but he struggled this spring going just 4-for-22 with seven walks to thirteen strikeouts. He has 223 plate appearances in the Majors between 2019 and 2020, owning a triple slash of .174/.251/.294. He has struck out in close to 30 percent of his plate appearances while walking at an average 8.5 percent clip. Still just 24-years-old, Diaz will head to Triple-A to await his next opportunity.

All that Jazz!
oldmansteve
Finally got a pun!
baseballpun
Disappointing, isn’t it?
Loud Noises!
Jazz hands!️
MetsFan22
He isn’t good.
baseballpun
To appreciate him, you’ve got to pay attention to the plays he DOESN’T make.
MetsFan22
He is good defensively. I just don’t think he’ll hit.
damon389
With his glove, he’s known as Smooth Jazz…
Prospectnvstr
Yeah, he’s probably not going to hit. I mean how many 21 yr old kids are expected to have high production at AA? Generally AA is the measuring stick for prospects. He put up solid #’s after the trade. Granted he did struggle in his initial MLB audition at the ripe old age of 22. Yeah, he’s going to be a bum. (Double eye roll emoji)

Baseballpun wins the internet today.

Neither is Diaz
MetsFan22
They need to trade for cano. Get him off our hands lol.

??

I’m a Mets fan and Chisholm is good. Stop with the stupid biased comments. Mets fans don’t do that
Chemo850
Neither are the Mets. Just watched that garbage team get smacked around for the last month. It was beautiful.
jcutiger
because ST means a lot
Chemo850
I mean, there’s also like the last 50 years worth of garage Mets baseball if you needed more of an extended history lol.
Big Smoke
Excellent move. Now cut Diaz and forget the whole Yelich trade even happened
Mjm117
Fish looking like Fish going 0-4 on the Yelich trade.
While Jazz looking really good in Spring and earned the 2nd base role. ROY candidate and hopefully more. Fish can’t strike out on the Gallen trade either.
Prospectnvstr
At least they made a killing on the Ozuna trade to St. Louis
bobsnoot
242 to the world
DarkSide830
honestly still think he could benefit from some more minors time
Mjm117
He’s earned his spot and, to a lesser a extent, their aren’t better option. His time is now.
Astros2017&22Champs
I remember jeter was destroyed for the stanton trade. “ supplying the yankees” was the theme. Even if devers fails the trade was terrific for the marlins. Stanton and his horrible contract is a sunk cost for the yankees. Good player but always hurt and is a permanent dh here on out
tigers2022
He hit 220 with a 328OB at AA ball. Good luck
oldmansteve
Thats a pretty good OPB for such a low average. Means his eye is pretty good.
Mjm117
Jazz also hit .280+, .360+ OBP, and .870 OPS after being traded to the Fish. He good.
KCJ
In AA? You cannot judge a player by their small sample size in AA ball. He got hot for a couple weeks. Big deal. Over the course of the season he hit .220. I think I’d pump the brakes on declaring him to be “good” until he actually shows something that is over an extended period of time. Isan Diaz and Lewis Brinson both tore up the minor leagues and we’ve all seen how that has turned out
Eatdust666
So did Brandon Wood, yet he turned out to be arguably the worst hitter in MLB history.
MWeller77
Not disagreeing with your overall argument, but Tommy Lasorda was pretty definitive on the worst hitter in MLB history: Kurt Bevacqua
loyalmarlinsfansince1993
Happy for Jazz and the Marlins!
Marlins finish the spring strong with 10-2 victory over the Mets.
highheat
Smooth Jazz! Was looking forward to see him debut as a DBack, but more than happy to have Gallen. Funnily enough, Diaz was also a DBacks pick originally.
DarkSide830
Segura/Anderson deal
bigguccisosa300
The cespedes barbecue boys will be happy
whyhayzee
He’s taken Giant Steps to make the team and his uniform is Kind of Blue. Plus he has a connection with Moonlight Graham. What’s not to like.
MWeller77
Marlins are hoping he delivers A Love Supreme before he hits free agency and The Money Jungle
Astros2017&22Champs
Baseball isnt football. Ive never understood the infatuation with speed. Seems like hit tool would be my biggest infatuation with a position player. Speed could help defense obviously but thats such a secondary trait i would look for in a top prospect
jim stem
Exciting player, but trying to hit homeruns in that park will create a ton of bad numbers unless you are a masher. I hope he his goals are more runs scored oriented than homers. Get on, score from first on doubles, steal, etc. Anything close to a .350 on base percentage and he’s probably going to be a very rich young man in the near future.
bobsugar84
What about Berti?!
ludafish
I believe Berti is the backup infielder. Rojas is SS. They have already talked about Berti playing 2B with Jazz going to SS to give Rojas time off. It’s going to be a weird season trying to get Cooper, Aguilar, Berti, and Duvall regular at bats.
wes_r
So it looks like he will be the 7th player born in the Bahamas to play in MLB. To be the best Bahamian ever in MLB he will have to beat out Andre Rogers, who had an 11 year MLB career, played in 854 games, and compiled 6.3 BWAR. Looks like he was the starting shortstop with the Cubs for three years in the early 60s.
winonarider
Ugh
MWeller77
So if he struggles and gets sent to AAA, will Uncle Phil throw him out the front door of the Bel Air mansion?
