The Braves announced this morning that they’ve optioned right-handers Kyle Wright and Jacob Webb to Triple-A to begin the season. That decision strongly suggests that righty Bryse Wilson will open the season as the club’s fifth starter behind Max Fried, Ian Anderson, Charlie Morton and Drew Smyly while the club waits on Mike Soroka to finish rehabbing last year’s Achilles tear.
Wright, the No. 5 overall draft pick back in 2017, started eight games for the Braves last year as the rotation battled substantial injury issues. He limped to a 5.21 ERA and 5.83 SIERA with poor strikeout and walk rates, but the righty also found his stride near season’s end and got the nod for a pair of postseason starts. He utterly dominated the Marlins in the NLDS before being hammered for seven runs in just two-thirds of an inning at the hands of the eventual World Series Champion Dodgers in the NLCS.
Wilson, meanwhile, was strong in his lone postseason start (also against the Dodgers), allowing just a run in six innings of work. He’s outpitched Wright thus far in Spring Training, holding opponents to three runs on 15 hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings of work. Long considered a well-regarded prospect himself, the 23-year-old Wilson has yet to find extended success in the big leagues but also hasn’t had a long opportunity to do so; he’s never pitched in more than six games during any of his three seasons of MLB experience to date.
Webb’s option also lends some clarity to the bullpen picture. The 27-year-old righty is the victim of the options game that impacts so many players this time of year, it seems. He’s pitched 42 1/3 innings at the MLB level and recorded a 1.06 ERA — albeit with less impressive secondary stats, including below-average strikeout (22.2) and walk (9.9) percentages and fielding-independent marks in the 4.00s. Still, he’s pitched well this spring (one run in six frames) and probably would’ve had a spot in the ’pen if the Braves’ relief corps had more flexibility.
That’s simply not the case, however. Will Smith, Chris Martin and Josh Tomlin, all veterans on guaranteed free-agent deals, aren’t going anywhere. Tyler Matzek, Grant Dayton and Luke Jackson are all out of minor league options. A.J. Minter has minor league options remaining but was dominant in 2020 and has had a strong Spring Training.
That could leave a bullpen spot open — perhaps two, depending on the number of pitchers the club carries. However, David O’Brien of The Athletic recently noted that the Braves are intrigued by non-roster invitees Nate Jones and Carl Edwards Jr., both of whom have pitched well this spring. Jones, who has thrown 6 2/3 shutout innings in camp, has to be added to the roster by tomorrow or else be granted his release, per O’Brien, which surely factored into the decision to option Webb.
It’s still likely that Wright and Webb will both have the opportunity to factor prominently into the team’s pitching plans by season’s end, as injuries and struggles elsewhere on the roster will inevitably lead the Braves to tap into their depth.
brave from the woods
I don’t care if Luke Jackson is “out of options”. That’s not an excuse to keep him around if there are better options.
bravesfan
It’s challenging to say there is a lock better option for the role he’s expected to have this season. I think there are better options. But I get it also
Steve Adams
If the Braves think Jackson is one of their 10-12 best bullpen options, sure it is. They know they’re not going to get through the season with the exact bullpen that breaks camp with the team, and it’s about maintaining that depth throughout the full length of a 162-game season.
Webb is probably the first guy up if/when they sustain an injury in the ‘pen. He’ll very likely work a significant number of innings this season, whether he makes the Opening Day club or is called up in mid-April.
It’s not a question of whether Webb is better than Jackson — it’s a question of whether Jackson, who they clearly expect would be claimed on waivers, is better than the guys several spots further down the ladder.
Jackson obviously finished the 2020 season poorly, but he also punched out a third of the hitters he faced over 72 innings in 2019.

Excellent analysis!
I love Webb. Think at some point he becomes a successful closer. Not there yet.
Here’s a statistic MLBTR might want to look up and use at times to put things into perspective:
The number of players the average ML team has on its roster over the course of a year.
A few years ago I couldn’t find that, so I checked out 3 or 4 individual teams. Believe one had used 38 or 39 players, the others were well into the 40’s.
Since MLB teams make at least 3 roster moves each week during the season, their teams in the high minors are no longer just a place to develop players, they’re a virtual roster for the majors. Players are (in older computer terminology ) paged-in and paged-out as needed – i.e. the ML roster is main memory, it holds the executable code to be used to perform necessary functions – to execute the strategy of that days game. When other functions are needed code goes out and other code comes in. Especially with all the pitching changes. A less talented fresh arm from the minor league roster will be far more productive than a more talented tired arm on the major league roster,
At this time of year too many posters here forget that decisions made breaking camp will be long forgotten by even mid-May.

P.S. What’s happening with Kyle Wright – now 25 years old – is both surprising and disappointing.
His raw ability sure made it appear he’d be a TOR pitcher and possible future ace.
bravesfan0618
Reminds me of Todd Van Powell. Glad Todd was vocal and said he wouldn’t play for Braves if we picked him, glad we picked Chipper.
lebzet
Indeed. Jackson sucks. I can’t believe he is still in the MLB.
bravesfan0618
Agreed

I’m a little surprised MLB didn’t expand rosters this year to 27-28 spots. They know they are going to have a lot of innings to cover, with starters being more limited than usual.
DarkSide830
the extra options should allow for more cycling of arms.

I was a big fan of Wright coming out of Vandy. Hope he figures it out
brandons-3
Sometimes I think being the top pitching prospect in a draft just means you’re getting a guaranteed middle of the rotation starter. (That’s not a bad thing at all.) I just look at guys like Mark Appel, Kevin Gausman, Jon Gray, Carlos Rondon, Kyle Wright, etc. who scouts pegged as future frontline stuff even though most (Appel non-withstanding) now look to be “merely” good starters at best and “good stuff, bad results” guys at worse. Casey Mize is another one to watch.
Braves Butt-Head
I would take a bucket of balls over Luke freakin Jackson. This guy is gonna literally cost the Braves at least 5 games. Give me Jacob Webb who did well in the playoffs. How did Jackson do in the playoffs???
Oh yea they didnt even put him on the playoff roster.
BTW Bryse Wilson is the real deal game 4 of the NLCS is all I needed to know dont be shocked when Soroka comes back if Wilson isnt still in the rotation. I can see Smyly going to the bullpen for Wilson.
baseballfanforever
By the way… Where is Smyly ? His last start in spring was March 9 which a little over 2 weeks ago. Either the coaches are working with him or they are resting him. Maybe he had something wrong with him his last start since he got hammered. He didn’t indicate this during his post game interview so who knows. It’s odd to let him go for two short starts of 2 innings each 6 days apart and then nothing ?
Braves Butt-Head
Hes this year’s cole Hamels

To sign Tomlin is a mistake to begin with, to keep him over ANYBODY is a travesty.
802Ghost
If you drop Tomlin, who is your long innings pitcher?
RunDMC
I imagine Touki will step into the role based on spring usage. Ynoa is another – who is currently tied for most K in spring training in MLB – but he’s getting hit around a lot so far.
Neil G
If Tomlin is the long inning reliever, then Braves don’t have a long inning reliever.
Braves Butt-Head
At least Tomlin has a purpose as a garbage innings eater. Jackson is way worse of a pitcher.
bhambrave
Jackson is the pitching version of Keith Lockhart: Gritty, hard-nosed player with a lot of heart and management loves him, but just not very good.
Braves Butt-Head
Dont you dare disrespect the good name of Keith Lockhart by comparing him to Luke Freakin Jackson lol
RunDMC
Not very good with a ERA+ of 120 in 2019 and a 13.1 K/9? Yes, he gave up a lot of HR (10) in 2019 that he needs to cut down on so he may need to sacrifice K, but he has swing-and-miss stuff. Don’t really care about 2020’s stats, honestly. He wouldn’t be the only star or otherwise player that needed to use his mulligan for 2020.
bhambrave
If he were a starter his stats would be ok, but relievers are supposed to be better. He’s not very good.
RunDMC
I get that argument, but any dude with a 13.1 K/9 is worth a small investment, especially since we’re having a growing resume of guys we give up on that go on to put it together elsewhere in Lucas Sims, Matt Wisler…
FredMcGriff for the HOF
I’d rather have Tomlin over Grant Dayton. Dayton hasn’t been anything special in spring training and got clobbered in the NLCS. I’m not sold on Ynoa either.
mgrap84
Damn such a shame Wright can’t get it going. At times he looks like he has good stuff but there are far too many bad outings compared to good outings. Hopefully he can figure it out
firehombre
Two things I’ve noticed from today’s game vs the Pirates. One, Ian Anderson had good pitches, but he had way too many pitches do nothing and get hit hard. That’s okay because he’s young and win get better. The second thing I noticed is that once again Camargo plays like he could care less to be on this club. So tired of watching players that think they don’t have to give 100% every time out. I would consider it a huge plus if the Braves would cut his butt loose. He’s just dead weight here.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
@hombre. I’ve never been a Camargo fan either. Who knows maybe the Braves will go a different direction. I think Adrianza will make the team. Good too see Riley hit a couple homers as well. I think they can afford to move on from Camargo.
Appalachian_Outlaw
Camargo could’ve been non-tendered, I’d have been perfectly fine with it. I was more disappointed to see Culby gone.
bravesfan
Those of you losing all hope in Wright, please relax. Lol. Look, is there some writing on the wall to be concerned, sure. But y’all are acting like his career is over. The rotation is the most stacked top to bottom that it has been in YEARS! Him and Wilson are more fighting for a 6th spot than a 5th spot in the rotation. And y’all forget, Wilson is a young legit arm. Look at his numbers in the minors and high school. He was putting up video game #’s. Wright will easily still have more opportunities and I can definitely see him making the rotation next year. He’ll be only 26
Appalachian_Outlaw
Kyle Wright has talent, and he’s shown flashes- but I’m beginning to question if he’s going to be able to fully put it together. I don’t believe it’ll be in Atlanta. He may be one of those guys that needs a fresh start elsewhere, with a different voice to guide him.
bravesfan
It’s still soooooo early in his professional career to think he needs a fresh start somewhere else. He was sorta rushed through the system if you ask me. And he continues to show incremental improvements. I’d give it at least this year to see if he finally makes a legit jump, then we can start questioning where he is at in his career
acmeants
Trade Touki and Luke. They have had their second, third and fourth chances with the Braves.
bravesfan
I disagree with Touki. He should be given a chance in the bullpen. That arm is legit and he generally pitches well for 1-2 innings even when he starts. He’s had his chance starting, just like Newcomb. Time for those two to strictly focus on the bullpen. Jackson though… yea… trade him to the Orioles for some cash or a project minor league player and call it a day
Neil G
Tomlin is a good guy but Webb has better stuff. I hate that Tomlin is on the big club at the expense of Webb getting ML experience
bravesfan
They fit different roles in the bullpen. Webb is not a long relief guy, so tomlin isn’t taking a spot Webb could fill. In fact, it doesn’t appear we have another long relief option other than maybe touki or Newcomb, ynoa? So tomlin is the best fit if you ask me today. Now Jackson in the bullpen before Webb, that’s a better conversation. If it weren’t for options, I think Webb beats him out. Even though Webb’s #’s are a bit misleading on how good they are
JAMES JACOBSEN
They will all be more seasoned next year when Morton and Smyly are gone
seemed they gave Folty alot more trys than these guys
