The Tigers are re-signing second baseman Jonathan Schoop to a one-year, $4.5MM contract, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Schoop is a client of VC Sports Group.
A member of the Orioles, Brewers and Twins earlier in his career, Schoop signed a $6.1MM deal with the Tigers heading into last season. At his best, Schoop slashed .293/.338/.503 with 32 home runs in 675 plate appearances as an Oriole in 2017. Schoop has never been that effective in any other season, but he did do a nice job last year as a member of the Tigers, with whom he batted .278/.324/.475 with eight homers over 177 trips to the plate. However, the 29-year-old did have a difficult season by Statcast’s standards, ranking way below average in most important categories, including exit velocity, hard-hit rate and expected weighted on-base average.
The Tigers, though, aren’t necessarily pushing for a star at the keystone right now. For the most part, as a rebuilding team that doesn’t figure to fight for a playoff spot in the near future, Detroit wants veteran Band-Aids to fit positions not occupied by younger players. Keeping the 29-year-old Schoop seems to make sense for the Tigers, then, considering they’re only guaranteeing him one more season on their roster. Meanwhile, free agency has lost yet another capable starter at second.

Pretty cheap I thought he was getting more.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Low career OBP. I wouldn’t have paid him much more.
fathead0507
Braves could have put him at 3rd
oldmansteve
His offensive value is good due to his ability to play 2nd. A .740ish ops is pretty mediocre for a corner. If he is moved to third he becomes replacement level.
BBB
Not saying he’d be great at third, but just to be fair his OPS has been above .750 (usually well above) in six of his eight seasons, including a .799 last year.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
But his OBP isn’t great.
Dotnet22
I hope the Braves sign a 3rd baseman soon so they’ll stop commenting on every thread that contains a player that might be 3B eligible.
Rsox
Brewers already tried using him as a SS and that didn’t work out at all. Brewers should sign Maikel Franco instead of trying to play players out of position
EasternLeagueVeteran
He is not a third baseman except in an emergency case only. I don’t get fathead’s need to fit a square peg in a round hole. I would rather have an experienced third baseman.
Hard to walk with four balls
I don’t think there is reason to be mad at this deal.
BBB
Paredes not ready for prime time?
oldmansteve
Schoop at 2nd. Paredes at 3rd. Castro at SS. Goodrum as a utility playing everyday but all over the place.
BBB
Wouldn’t be a bad plan, if Paredes can cut it (plus there is some cushion now).
MoTownTigers
I don’t think Paredes is ready. My guess they sign a free agent first basemen and put Candy back at third where he is much better.
Rsox
Perhaps now that they have re-signed Schoop they will re-sign Cron as well
oldmansteve
They are basically a package deal at this point.
paws
Trade Niko. We hve Harold Casro who hits better, and is a pretty decent glove.
MLBTR Commenter
Schoop there it is
theathlete
Nice, but his name is pronounced “Scope”.
MLBTR Commenter
I was wondering how long it would take for someone to point that out.
nentwigs
Have you not seen the GEICO “SCOOP” commercial ??
Hard to walk with four balls
not any more.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Someone schooped it out, I see.
steelerbravenation
Is he gonna start ???
whyhayzee
Wow, now with Bauer signed for twice the amount of the COVID relief package, all the other free agents are quickly grabbing the table scraps left over.
Rangers29
Ooo. I kinda like the small things the Tigers are doing this off-season. Who gets DFA’d?
For Love of the Game
When you’re consistently one of the worst teams in baseball, there are enough “usual suspects” that don’t represent much of a loss.
Rangers29
I ask because a few weeks ago I said that Grayson Greiner would be DFA’d and go to the Dodgers. I stand by that, and I’m just waiting for him to be DFA’d.
oldmansteve
Not likely as they only have 3 catchers on the 40 man.
Rangers29
I didn’t realize Jake Rogers and Wilson Ramos were the only other two. Huh, thanks for that.
MoTownTigers
What in the world would you base that on? Why would the best team in baseball want a AAA catcher released from one of the worst?
bigguccisosa300
Homie thinks he’s a very smart guy
Dock_Elvis
I dont believe the Tigers need to put Dillon Dingler on the 40 Man yet, but he’s their catcher of the future. First player taken in the second round I believe. Mayne a fast mover..college catcher. He can hit and has all-star potential. I don’t see anything really effecting the team all that greatly yet. I do like the Grossman signing. I think next offseason they are much more active.
sergefunction
Does it matter who they DFA (Demeritte)?
Just rename the team the Detroit For Assignments. Change the D to the D.
Al and Chris – creating apathy since 2017.
Hard to walk with four balls
Mr.I caused this because he sold the entire farm trying to give that bum Jim Leyland more tools to win a championship; Dombrowski should have replaced Leyland instead.
Jgwi2az
He disappeared in the 2018 NLCS. And looked uninterested
cobbalicious
Cardinals should have signed him.
davidk1979
Was hoping the Mets would sign him and move McNeil at third base
oldmansteve
So replace JD Davis with Schoop? Why pay to get worse?
MoTownTigers
What are you talking about?
Rangers29
I decided to check the free agent predictions leaderboard. I have 8 which is way more than I expected, but I want to learn how somebody has 13?
miggy4prez
Who are the 8
GarryHarris
I’ve got ZERO!
stymeedone
Not happy with this move. Schoop had a fine season last year, but this moves Candy back to 1B. Parades at 3B. Candy has limited control and would have more trade value as a third baseman. The Tigers need power, and Cron was a better fit. The Tigers have little middle infield depth in the upper minors. Moving Parades to 2B now would have made sense.
tigerdoc616
Not necessarily. Candy probably splits time at 1st and 3rd, also with Niko playing some 1st. Parades might not start in the majors either. He could very well start at AAA to begin the season. He could then get reps there and at 3rd before coming up later in the year if he proves his worth. Cron coming off an injury and could yet get signed, though suspect it would be to a MiLB deal with a spring invite.
Now the Tigers will have another roster move to make……….wonder whom gets the boot?
basedonamadeupstory
Paredes won’t make the team. He needs more seasoning. Candy will move back to third, Tigers will sign a low cost short term first baseman.
Dock_Elvis
Going to see Torkelson sometime soon and he’ll man 3B.
nentwigs
Would have been a more economical alternative to LaStella for the Giants.
Cubsforever22
Really wanted to sign schoop after not getting Wong, only 1 yr at 4.5 make it hurt even more. Ugh…
tg0880
I hope to god Stewart is the guys who gets dropped
GarryHarris
Christan Stewart is no good; Al Avila will give him an extension and he will play 150 games and block more deserving players.
Grayson Greiner’s offense is comparable to Bill Bergen, the worst hitter all time during the deepest part of the dead ball era. However, Greiner’s defense is not comparable to Bergen, the best defensive catcher all-time.
violentdreams11
always like Schoop he was quite the menace to the Yankees haha good for him hope he turns into that schoop for the tigs
tigerdoc616
Don’t get me wrong, liked what Schoop brought to the team last year. But would have preferred signing a 1B, allowing Willi Castro Niko Goodrum play middle IF with Candelario playing third. Now Candy and Niko will have to take some reps at 1B. Of course, there is still a chance we sign a 1B and Candy plays 3B with Parades in AAA working on some things.
miggy4prez
Hoping Paredes can get another look.
C Ramos
1B Candy
2B Schoop
SS W Castro
3B Paredes
LF Grossman
CF Jones
RF Victor Reyes
DH Miggy
This is not must-see TV but it is watchable. I’ll take that.
basedonamadeupstory
There are still low cost options at first available. Expect the Tigers to be in play for one of them.
MoTownTigers
Why would you want to give more time to Goodrum? He has no idea what he’s doing at the plate. I still think they will sign a first basemen and Goodrum will be the utility guy.
Eat em Up
Happy to have him back. Better than any of our other options.
miggy4prez
Not bad
Cap & Crunch
ill beat the drum again; Id rather Det go buy some prospects right now by taking on a David Price or Joe Kelley type contract than this……CJ Crone soon to come
MoTownTigers
How do you buy prospects?
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Take on bad contracts.
Sign a top level FA, lower the contract cost with a signing bonus, flip.
Trade a valued player now for a future.
Be proactive instead of passive? You tell me. I am here to learn.
DT.J.B.
Just take a bad contract from another team and they attach prospects and you give up nothing really except paying said contract.
Dock_Elvis
Sign and flips dont happen in MLB.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Int would if they would be more creative like paying singing bonuses to reduce the annual contact payments.
Player wants $14M
Offer $4M singing bonus, $9-10M for the year or a reduced rate for multiple years.
Contenders with their backs against the luxury tax or just cheap budget minded teams will appreciate the savings……
SIGN AND FLIP
Cap & Crunch
Get some prospects (preferably on the offensive end) by taking on a bad contract. Theres plenty out there, and plenty of teams looing to shed payroll
Hard to walk with four balls
No. The Dodgers get nothing. They didn’t want to give away a prospect to get Verlander and win a championship and i’m glad the Astros rammed that down their throat.
The Dodgers are not giving anything of value up for taking Price.
That is not how they roll.
Pauly2112
I’ll take a second baseman with a .799 OPS any day advanced metrics or not!
Rightout
Now Sign Moreland or Cron. and Duvall to the OF.all will be on the cheap now….Tork is the 1st baseman next year leave Candy at 3rd..send Parades to the minors til August..
MoTownTigers
I was thinking the exact same thing!
Harry074
Go get Jake Lamb or CJ Cron

Worked well last year! So…why not?!?!!??!??
gotigers68
I like it. Now get Cron, if he can pass a physical….
