The Reds announced this morning that they’ve signed outfielder/first baseman Nicky Delmonico to a minor league contract. The CAA client will be in Major League camp for Spring Training.
Delmonico, 28. has appeared in the big leagues with the White Sox in each of the past four seasons but has not recaptured the form he showed in a promising rookie campaign back in 2017. The former Orioles and Brewers prospect batted .262/.373/482 in 166 plate appearances during that excellent showing, but he’s managed just a .210/.287/.346 output in 408 trips to the plate over the three subsequent seasons.
Cincinnati already has a relatively crowded outfield mix, with Jesse Winker, Nick Senzel, Nick Castellanos, Shogo Akiyama, Aristides Aquino and Mark Payton among the options at the big league level. Delmonico could give them a left-handed bat off the bench or a depth option to stash at the Triple-A level, where he’s a career .262/.345/.424 hitter in 824 plate appearances.
Steak?
It’s rare to see such a good comment, well done…
Tasty signing indeed!
Childish!
Tertiary character in a Martin Scorcese movie: Nicky Delmonico.
I love how its not racist to stereotype Italian Americans… oh well
Lol. Try breathing into a paper bag.
It’s not ok
Why do you love it so much @robluca21?
Last I checked Italian Americans are likely the same race as the commenter. Since when did having even the slightest amount of fun with a minor transaction have to turn into a political brouhaha? Are not all characters in a Scorcese movie stereotypical? Lighten up Francis as graciously stated in that classic of film “Stripes”.
Yet another sign Reds will spin Senzel to the Indians involving Ahmed Rosario
Huh?
If anything, this means they are keeping Senzel, considering Delmonico and Senzel went to the same high school.
Thank god. Was terrified he might come back to the Sox.
Can someone tell me what they’re doing? Clearly not “loading up” for a Senzel move to Cleveland. They have about 7,000 outfielders. This is ridiculous. Just trade for a SS, and get it over with.
Louisville needs outfielders and there aren’t any prospects he’ll be blocking. Sign someone who’s probably a 4A player but can fill in in a pinch as a bench bat when injuries invariably occur.
Reds are now perfectly positioned if MLB agrees to the universal five DH’s in every lineup.
I was supportive of giving Krall a chance to build the team the way he wanted without Dick Williams, but the results are underwhelming so far.
Yes, but they are not nearly as well positioned as our dear White Sox are positioned, if Manfred goes to the 5 DH lineup.
Blow it up. Get good returns for Suarez grey and Castillo and if senzel can rebound- him too. That’ll build quality for krall. Then draft well.
Glad to see Nicky getting another chance. I wish the kid well
I enjoyed watching him hit. Wish him well too.
I enjoyed watching him hit, and field. His results were equal to 1.000.
Nicky hit .250, and he fielded .750.
Or trade Senzel for Story
Not giving up multiple years of control on Senzel for one year of Story. Send them a couple of prospects not named India, Lodolo, or Greene.
Would love to see the Reds trade for Trevor Story. No better time to unload the over-hyped Nick Senzel. Of course, in true Reds tradition, he’d go to Colorado and immediately become a perrenial All Star.
After the arenado trade- be hard pressed to think Rockies leadership could get any sort of value for story. Senzel, although a complete bust to this point, would be an overpay. With everyone blocking him- they’d surely give em india if they’d eat some of that $$
Why give them more value than the Cardinals? I’d think Story and $10 million for Santillan and three or four a/aa players would work.
The Reds are like a rudder-less ship. The dont know which way to go. They need a SS so sign another outfielder, where the team has half a dozen players already. They will sign anyone no matter their position as long as they are cheap!
It’s just a AAAA signing in case the REDS blow it up completely by the trading deadline…your gonna need someone to put on the uni….
Nicky isn’t a horrible ballplayer, he’s just inconsistent. Best of luck to him.
I know he’s not a star, but I’ve always liked Nicky. Go Vols
