Red Sox Claim Joel Payamps, Place Franchy Cordero On COVID Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | February 22, 2021 at 3:01pm CDT

The Red Sox have claimed right-hander Joel Payamps off waivers from the Blue Jays, according to Boston’s Twitter feed.  To create roster space, outfielder Franchy Cordero has been placed on the COVID-19 injured list, as the Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham reported earlier today.

Payamps returns to the Sox less than two weeks after Toronto acquired him in another waiver claim, after the Red Sox designated Payamps for assignment to make roster room for the newly-signed Garrett Richards.  The Sox themselves first landed Payamps on a waiver claim back in November when the right-hander was DFA’ed by the Diamondbacks.

A veteran of eight minor league seasons in the Rockies and Diamondbacks organizations, Payamps has received brief looks at the MLB level in each of the last two seasons, appearing in two games for Arizona in both 2019 and 2020 (with a 3.86 ERA over his seven career innings in the Show).   Over 665 2/3 innings in the minors, Payamps has a 4.15 ERA with a modest 20.34 strikeout rate, starting 119 of 145 games but seeing increasing work as a reliever in both the affiliated minors and in the Dominican Winter League.

Cordero was acquired from the Royals as part of the three-team trade with the Mets that saw Andrew Benintendi head from Boston to Kansas City.  Cordero has shown some glimpses of potential but has been plagued by injuries, appearing in only 95 Major League games over his four seasons as a big leaguer.  It isn’t known if Cordero’s placement on the COVID list is because of his own positive test for the virus, or if he was placed on the list as a precautionary measure due to possible exposure.

The Benintendi trade is already paying off for the Sox… Why they didn’t get Khalil Lee instead of Cordero in that trade is beyond me.

I know, just my good old Red Sox fan pessimism. Although I really do wish the Sox had gotten Lee instead. I’m a big fan of his and think he’ll be a great future leadoff hitter type. Not as high on Cordero, despite his talent. Lower floor than Lee in my opinion.

It wasn’t Cordero or Lee. The Sox are still getting three PTBNL including one from the Mets who got Lee. Let’s evaluate the trade in a few years,

Doubt that gives us much. Could happen but usually PTBL is not anything substantial. Still, I do not mind we traded Benintendi.

My argument was simply Boston chose the Mets’ PTBNL over Lee. Might have had to do with the team preferred not to use up a 40 man spot this year, etc.

Spot-on, and obviously correct. Without knowing who the PTBNL is, there is no reason, and no way, to judge the trade.

If you were a Seattle Marines fan I can see why you would pessimistic! NEVER EVEN BEEN TO A WORLD SERIES let alone win one, but the Red Sox have 4 WS wins in the last 17 seasons which makes it almost unfair to be pessimistic.

I don’t remember any covid injury lists from last season. Most of the players who reported late last year, we weren’t told why, not even always afterwards. Is this something new or exclusive to the Red Sox?

Apparently the expectation going into June 2020 was to have no covid-specific list, but that apparently changed rather quickly. I believe teams are still not required to disclose any more information than “____ has been placed on the covid injury list”

Thanks, I was thinking more of players reporting late. Mostly we weren’t informed of the reason, though some players chose to confess it later.

reason that teams do not give out more info then placed on covid list most likely due to HIPPAA laws.

Payamps was put on waivers by the Jays because Atkins doesn’t have a clue.

I dunno who’s taking that spot on the 40-man. It would make sense if it was Odorizzi.

I recently saw something that mentioned Chaim Bloom said we should compete this year. If Bloom really thinks that, there is something wrong because there is no way we compete with the Yankees, Rays, and I doubt even the Blue Jays. Bloom is overselling this team.

Pwndroia – I agree. They are very likely to finish behind the Orioles. Heck, can the bats put up runs against Matt Harvey? Sure, we know three guys can but what about the other 6 hitters? So many question marks on offense and it’s the better half of the team! 65 to 75 wins depending on Sale’s return and success rate.
