The baseball community mourns the sudden passing of ESPN Reporter Pedro Gomez this morning. Gomez unexpectedly passed away at his home yesterday at the age of 58. Teams, players and reporters from all around the game have taken to social media to share their memories of the beloved journalist. MLB and the MLBPA joined the community in expressing their sadness over the loss, while ESPN shared the news of his passing with this tribute.
ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro released a statement, saying, “We are shocked and saddened to learn that our friend and colleague Pedro Gomez has passed away. Pedro was an elite journalist at the highest level and his professional accomplishments are universally recognized. More importantly, Pedro was a kind, dear friend to us all. Our hearts are with Pedro’s family and all who love him at this extraordinarily difficult time.”
Gomez’s lasting impact on the game could not be clearer than in the tremendous outpouring of support over the last few hours. Gomez leaves behind a wife and three children, one of whom is currently a pitcher in the Boston Red Sox organization. Everyone at MLBTR would like to share our condolences with Pedro’s friends and family. He will be missed.

I’m devastated to wake up to this news. I grew up on Pedro’s reports on sportscenter. RIP and prayers for his family.

devastated?
dubtastic
He chose that word to describe his reaction..just because you aren’t doesn’t mean he has to empathize his feeling with yours..unless you don’t know what devastated means and needed the definition..there’s always Google.

Very sad.
dubtastic
Well there you go NYY42..that’s what devastated means..

Crazy how people like you feel the need to even comment if it’s crap like this. That’s what they described their feeling to be.

NY people, the classiest of them all. POS.

Such a great guy and great journalist one of my Favs on ESPN.. He will truly be missed by all.. Praying for his family such a nice man..

Not to sound inhumane, but why is cause of death not reported. Whenever another famous person dies always reported, just curious
candymaldonado
Because it isn’t always known within the first 24hrs. Sudden deaths get reported all the time without immediate causes of death.
BravesSteelersCle
@Todd. As of last night it wasn’t known by networks. Usually cause of death is specified bc an illness was already known. This was sudden and not expected so they have to figure out the cause. When this happens it is usually a heart attack. No matter the cause, this is terrible news. From everything I knew about Pedro he was a great guy. RIP Pedro
gocats
It was mentioned on Reddit that it was due to a heart attack. Supposedly a guy whose dad is an MLB umpire made a call to someone connected and found out.

So shocked and saddened to hear. He was like everybody’s baseball uncle. You didn’t know the guy but his calm affable demeanor and ability to make the story relatable brought you into the baseball community and made you feel like family. Loved his repeatability and how he connected the fans to the story. We lost a pillar in the baseball community!

Beautifully put. Huge loss of a humane and talented man and journalist. He will be sorely missed.

This one really sucks.

I enjoyed his reports. He had a smooth and deliberate very professional delivery, as the best reporters and commentators do. RIP Pedro.

RIP. Like most people commenting here, I used to watch a lot of him on Sportscenter. 2021 has been a cruel year so far for baseball fans. Prayers for his family.

The last 2 years have been brutal. Baseball fans have lost quite a number of good men.

Really enjoyed his writing before he made the jump to TV. Pedro was a genuine fan and will be missed.
RIP.

Born and raised in Miami like myself. Wrote locally… Then became one of the least annoying mlb reporters by far (and I mean that in a very sincere compliment).
His father and brother unexpectedly passed away as well. When Castro died he got to scatter some of their ashes in Cuba (he had been before though on work assignment) but his father refused to go back under Castro. So at least he got to fulfill his father’s wishes somewhat. I wonder if someone will do the same for him. Might as well follow the family.

Wow. How sad. Remember him in his early days in Phoenix. He was well liked and admired.

Very sad news. He was a great pro at his job and when he broke in it wasn’t always easy for minorities to excel, so he probably had to work harder to make it into the mainstream. But as the report said, more importantly is that people say he was a good man and in any event, he leaves behind a wife & 3 kids so it’s sad whether he was a known celebrity or not. RIP Pedro.

Such sad news. Pedro was one of the best in the business. Gone too soon.

I’m bummed. ☹️ Pedro Gonmez was a joy to watch work because it was evident he loved life and others around him. May he be remembered for a long time, and his family be comforted during their time of grief.

That would be Pedro Martinez. Different guy.

Very sad. Gomez was one of the best at ESPN and one of the few I actually enjoyed listening to. My condolences to his family and his ESPN family. You will be in our prayers.

RIP to one of the best ESPN reporters. 58 is way too young.

Sad to see this. He was both professional and enjoyable to listen to. When he gave a report I was confident that it was accurate. Sympathies to his family and friends.
