FEB. 18: The Padres have announced the signing of Kela to a one-year deal. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweets that he’ll be guaranteed $1.2MM with another $2.3MM available via incentives.
To make room for Kela on their 40-man roster, they placed righty Trey Wingenter on the 60-day injured list. Wingenter underwent Tommy John surgery last July, so he’s unlikely to pitch much — if at all — in 2021.
FEB. 15: The Padres have signed right-hander Keone Kela, per Jon Heyman of the MLB Network (via Twitter). The deal is pending a physical. Perhaps accidentally, Kela broke the news himself in an updated bio on his Instagram page last night, though his bio was soon deleted.
Kela is the latest acquisition in a very busy offseason for the Padres, particularly on the pitching side. The addition of Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, and Joe Musgrove to the rotation has pushed some of the younger arms who might have been in contention for starting jobs down into the mix for bullpen time, and San Diego has further augmented its pen by signing Mark Melancon. Kela now joins Melancon and Emilio Pagan as pitchers with past closing experience, should the team prefer to mix and match save opportunities based on situations rather than fully entrust the ninth inning to Drew Pomeranz.
Of course, Kela is far from a lock for such a key role himself considering that he barely pitched in 2020. Between a positive COVID-19 test and then an injured-list stint due to forearm tightness, Kela appeared in only three games for the Pirates last season. This lack of playing time might well have kept him in a Pirates uniform, as he would surely have been a prime trade candidate for the Bucs so close to his entrance into the free agent market.
The 27-year-old Kela has been a source of controversy during his time in Pittsburgh, primarily during a 2019 season that saw him suspended twice. One was a 10-game, league-mandated punishment for throwing at Derek Dietrich and sparking a huge brawl between the Pirates and Reds, and the other was a team-mandated two-game absence for an altercation with a member of the coaching staff.
A change of scenery certainly seemed necessary, and Kela will now join a familiar face in Padres general manager A.J. Preller. The Rangers made Kela a 12th-round pick in the 2012 draft when Preller was still working in the Texas front office, and Kela joins Darvish and Jurickson Profar as prominent ex-Rangers who have made their way to San Diego during Preller’s tenure as GM.
It was in Arlington that Kela emerged as a hard-throwing future closing candidate, finally taking over the ninth inning for Texas during the 2018 season, and the Pirates were planning to use him as a closer prior to the 2020 season. Over six seasons and 216 2/3 innings with the Rangers and Pirates, Kela has a 3.24 ERA and a very strong 30.1% strikeout rate, though he has had some issues with walks (9.4% walk rate) and his spin rates range from average (his fastball) to mediocre (his curve).
mydadleftme
Hey Mark,
Pagan got twenty saves in 2019 on the Rays. Unfortunately he struggled in 2020 on the padres! Kinda weird he’s been on 4 teams in 4 major league seasons
burnt_reynolds
If you look closer he was actually much, much better after going on the IL for bicep tightness. Obviously the season was too short for his overall numbers to recover. That’s not a guarantee that he’ll be great in 2021, but worth pointing out nonetheless.
Sorry about your dad 🙁

It is obvious that the Angels have been done adding players 10 days ago. Arte must have told Minasian that he reached his limit for spending. With Minasian’s Acquisitions the Angels are no better than they were in 2020, maybe even worse.
The Angels are a bad organization that needs a total restructuring. Alex Cobb and Dexter Fowler were horrible pickups, The two Iglesias’ are fine assets. This team has no room for error, it will take some career years from many of the players to have a chance for the Post Season. I predict a 78-84 record.

Signed Wilson Ramos for $2 mill. to help behind the dish. Re-signed Jonathan Schoop for $4.5 mill. Nomar Mazara for $1.75 mill. Jose Urena for $3.25 mill. And Robbie Grossman for $5 mill. Not exactly George Springer or Trevor Bauer, but what were you expecting for a team that keeps losing about 100 games a year?
stymeedone
I was expecting something they actually needed that had some team control. Nunez is the only player that fits that billing, and I don’t see much upside in him. I was hopeful when Detroit was mentioned early for Taijuan Walker, but then they went a completely different direction.

Mazara’s a bust. Why bother?

Why risk a ‘knucklehead’ when you’ve loaded up with young talent?
The Melancon signing seems perfect whether he performs or not – Kela could be a BP gem, but still piss everyone else off.
okiguess
While I don’t condone any pitcher trying to intentionally hit someone, it is refreshing to have a pitcher with a desire to win and try to command the inside portion of the plate. Unlike many others just waiting for their next paycheck.

Not being afraid to pitch inside and intentionally drilling someone shoulder-high are two vastly different things

The Padres would need to sign Syndergaard, Degrom, Hader, Trout, Arozarena, Freeman, Albies and a few other players to beat LA lol

@Wendell’s feeling the pressure.
Padres are having such a good off-season. Another move simply to make an improvement of any type. I see why the Wendell’s of the world are sweating.
Anyway.
It seems like most teams have kind of made clusters of acquisitions. Ya know? We’ll see a burst of 2-3 trades/signings from a team & then not much more.
San Diego & the mets have been the two teams I can name that have pretty much been active all winter. & the results show. I maintain that the goal of the off-season is to improve.
Hard to argue that the Padres haven’t.
bucketbrew35
They can beat LA as presently constructed. Only a fool would think otherwise.
Guyh
Right and get swept 3-0 again in the playoffs. Only the Padres would leverage their players for an injured Clevenger. The Padres will win some during the regular season like a little brother punching the big brother, but then get knocked out when it matters ^_^

Personally, I feel that the 2020 champion should get extra credit. I know that just putting together an average construction season was incredibly difficult.
But.
I don’t think ’20 is a year that many people are going to forget. & when it comes to the baseball season there will certainly be some questions. It was – after all – a 60 game regular season.
Now I realize that you’re merely going to respond in some way claiming to be more mature – or whatever – than I am.
But the harsh reality is a lot of fans are questioning (& not without reason) the validity of last year’s World Series.
Eatdust666
Possibly, but either way, it makes no sense at all, because a win is a win.
outinleftfield
Like the Dodgers do every season? Don’t get cocky. Dodgers beat Padres in playoffs without their two best pitchers and now those guys would be 3-4 in the Padres rotation.
Padres2019ha
If The Padres won the WS last year I wouldn’t feel it was a legitimate Championship. Now it could be because we gave never won one and this wouldn’t feel like a real one. Same would apply to a Dodgers franchise that has bee. So close so many times since their last WS. I dunno, I think the dodgers have more to prove. Looking forward to some great competitive baseball.
TommyLasutton
How is the Dodgers’ farm system shot??? Lmao that’s a seriously uneducated comment
KCJ
Wendell –
I’m happy for you that being a fan of the Dodgers has given you some sense of pride. It makes you cool because the Dodgers are good.
I will agree that they are a well run team, but give almost any other team another $150 mil to spend and then see what happens. Not that hard to have a great team when you can buy everything and others can’t.
DrDan75
I’m a Padres fan, and I don’t buy that the Dodgers “did not win legitimately.” The players (all of them) just went with the hand they were dealt. Dodgers would probably have run away with the NL west again anyway in a full season. Most of the teams in the playoffs would have been right there at the end.
Now had the Brewers somehow bumped off the Dodgers, gone on a hot streak and won the WS, I might have questions, lol.
Jasona9
burnt_reynolds, “big brother/little brother thing is so obnoxious”….I agree. Dodger fans have no imagination and just repeat themselves.

One of the few times I actually agree with Padres2019. I been saying all along that whoever wins the 2020 WS will have an asterisk next to it second in size only to the 2017 Astros. And no, not just because it ended up being the Dodgers.
Hudson6
The Padres were down 2-ACEs when the playoffs started last year. They added 2 more this year. They are also getting 1 of their 2 existing ACEs back this year and the other one next year. I think they’ll be fine.

Citifield4eva
That’s the weakest beta sentiment eva. LAD were beasts all year in a very messed up year. They won at a record pace – what would have been 116 games if they had the same winning percentage in a full season. Not saying they would, but it’s a damn good 60 game result. Then they had to win more games than any other postseason team in history to get the chip. We all know that in a short series anything can happen and they still prevailed.

Stammen
Longtimecoming
I think when ST starts they can move Clev and Wint to 60 day and create the 2 spots needed. Now, the 26 is another thing altogether with a few on bubble with no options. Let’s go win a job in ST.
CNichols
I agree about the 60 day IL for the 40 man spots. I have no clue how they work the 26 at this point.
It doesn’t seem like there’s a ton of guys in the bullpen who still have options remaining. Hill, Straham, Pagan, Williams, and Castillo would be it by my count. If Altavilla, Stammen and Guerra can’t go to the minors, that’s a problem since they have 8+ bullpen arms that I would rather have on the 26 man at this point.
I’m all for them having depth, I’m just really curious to see how they make that all work in their roster because I think they’re going to have to move 1-2 of the guys who can’t be optioned.
istravin
Please be Stammen. Just accept that was a bad contract and move on.
CNichols
Stammen really isn’t that bad as a non-leverage guy. His FIP last year was 3.36 and ZIPS projects him for a 3.40FIP this year. He still has value as a middle reliever/innings eater, the SD bullpen is just so deep at this point he keeps falling down the depth chart.
I would rather keep him as the last option/mop up man and then ship out Altavilla/Guerra. Those guys still have multiple controllable years left and they also aren’t making $4.5M this year so maybe you can actually get something back for them, even if they are out of options. If you try to unload Stammen you’re basically just salary dumping a rental, but he’s a depth piece that SD could still use. So in that case they might as well keep him as like their 9th best option out of the bullpen since his production would probably be comparable to Altavilla, but Altavilla should have some minimal trade value whereas Stammen probably doesn’t.
Guyh
Were forgetting the Dodgers have 7 aces in their Rotation. Reminds me of the 2013 cardinals when they had Carpenter, Kelly, Wainwright, Wacha, and Miller
gbs42
Seven aces? I think you’re seeing double.
istravin
Come on man you are just embarrassing yourself. No one is saying you don’t have excellent rotation depth but calling Gonsolin/May/Urias and I would even argue Price “aces” at this point is incorrect. DeGrom is an ace. Cole is an ace. You are not an ace.
outinleftfield
Add Bauer and Price to that list of non-Aces. An Ace doesn’t have a career 3.90 ERA and consistently is among the top starters in ERA and IP. Bauer is neither of those.
Only Kershaw can honestly be called an Ace. Buehler may earn that after another couple of full seasons. He certainly has the stuff.
Longtimecoming
Leftfield – you don’t realize that if you put on Dodger Blew that stars don’t matter. Everyone is the best! No Dodger ever overachieved and never is susceptible to a down year. Anybody else remember when Kela gave the Dodgers a W when he “balked-off” the Dodgers when he was a Texas Ranger? I’m sure Dodgers fans do. It’s not a bad signing but I wouldn’t feel great about him as my 8th inning guy or closer in a NLDS if I was San Diego unless he shows improvement to elite status during the course of the season.
Stevil
I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m starting to think SD is eyeing another rebuild.
Clearly these signings and trades will bring back a massive haul of talent at the deadline.
beersy
These signings will end up brining in prospects, but it’s when they trade guys who are on the roster bubble (Altavilla, Williams, Guerra), as they will have a hard time fitting all of these guys on the 40 and 26 man rosters.
Stevil
Na, that’s what the Dodgers do: They trade off their spare parts for prospects, then develop those prospects into something useful.
SD’s probably looking at a tear-down.
beersy
Alrighty.
its_happening
Building a team around Tatis plus major signings over the last few years they are not tearing down at the deadline. Preller will fight in order to keep his job.
CNichols
Preller just got extended weeks ago because the roster as constructed should compete for the next 3 years. @Stevil’s post must have been sarcasm.
SDHotDawg
Preller’s roster building is still questionable. And if 2020 was any indication, he and Tingles have real issues managing a pitching staff.

Lots of bad clubhouse guys in that bullpen in chair-punching Pomeranz and Kela….SD totally ignoring team chemistry, which probably isn’t real anyway, will be interesting to see how it pans out.
CNichols
That Pomeranz chair punching incident was like 7 years ago. He gets fired up and screams F-bombs every once in a while, but that hardly makes him a bad clubhouse guy. I haven’t heard reports from other teams complaining about him.
I think Kela is going to be more accountable on a good SD team than he had to be on PIT, which was kind of a mess on and off the field. There weren’t many veterans around to keep that clubhouse in order and there were other incidents like the other players arguing with the bullpen coach about giving Felipe Vasquez preferential treatment and then Vasquez punching Kyle Crick.
I’m not making excuses for his behavior, but on a last place team with no leadership that kind of stuff is more likely to fly. On a playoff caliber team with 4 guys in your pen that have closing experience you can’t really pull that kind of stuff.
Ryan W
They also had Pomeranz a few years ago and decided to bring him back on. Obviously he wasn’t a disruption.
TommyLasutton
Wanted Keone on the Dodgers. Another homecoming would’ve been great. The change of scenery to hometown probably would’ve been good for Kela too. Don’t like that he’s going to the rival but Dodger Stadium South is the next best thing to playing in Dodger Stadium.

DrDan75
I grew up in San Diego and thus am a Padres fan. I’m excited, but not too excited. I think a Padres / Dodgers rivalry is good for baseball and a lot of fun for fans of both teams. Padres look good, but are still unproven until they play well in 162 games. Are Myers and Hosmer going to perform well or revert to 2019 form? Is that pitching staff going to be able to avoid injuries? Will they excel or crumble under the weight of high expectations?
You never know what’s going to happen, that’s why you play the games.
Longtimecoming
I agree with the Dr but will add, I think that same logic applies to all teams, not just the Padres so, yes, let’s play 162 baby and then we know!
DrDan75
@ Longtimecoming
Yes you can say that about a lot of teams. But having spent a lifetime watching bad Padre teams, I’ve learned to ignore a lot of the hype.
Longtimecoming
I don’t challenge yourself right to do so and you shave plenty of history to rely on. I’ve been a full on Pads fan since late 80’s, so I know the pain and the failed hype. That said, I do think this current hype is different and more like late 80’s (Benito, Alomar, etc) than the more recent examples (Upton x2, Shields, etc). For me, I choose to enjoy what we have coming while realizing line we both said, have to play the games.
SDHotDawg
I grew up in San Diego, too. But my first game was in 1969. My Dad was probably not too happy that I was just as interested in the hot dogs and cotton candy as the game, but … After a couple of teases, a lot of hype, and some outright lies, I’ve learned not to trust anything the Padres and their apologists say. It’s a lot less disappointing that way.
Longtimecoming
HotDawg – I respect your right to feel that way and honestly, agree that you have plenty of history to justify it. I just choose to have a less negative approach to the upcoming season and current status of the team / farm and the future of the team. I’m not saying that it will be different this time – none of us know either way.
SDHotDawg
“Less negatve?” Being realistic is not negative. Just as being optimistic isn’t always a Pollyannish fool’s gambit. As usual, I will live and die with every game, but I won’t get my hopes up for a World Series. Not even in the Spring.

The Pads have at least 3 guys heading to the 60 this week, what will be interesting for them is if the mlb will restrict the number of pitchers to 13 or back off as they did last year. What’s certain is some guys will be moved or DFA’d from the pitching staff by April 1st

Them young Pads are gonna be the truth… Been a die hard for a long time which has been ROUGH. Finally the process is working an we have the only player to be stabbed at a strip club during a pandemic ever. Let’s GO!

Why does it seem like the Padres have a 175-man roster this spring?
SDHotDawg
Because Preller’s not disclosing the records.

why wouldn’t Pomeranz be a lock for the closer role? Why mix and match when you’ve got a guy who’s looked as dominant as he has since converting back back a FT reliever. Idk, maybe that’s just my “old school mentality” but personally I think it’s better to have one guy be the “closer” so everyone else knows their defined roles vs trying to mix and match all the time and possibly leading to confusion etc.

If you follwed the Padres, especially from August forward, you would know the answer. Preller/Tingler do not know how to manage a pitching staff.

This guy is clubhouse poison. What are the Padres thinking?

Wait and see how much a winning atmosphere changes Keone Kela’s personality. Provided that his forearm injury was not overly serious, he has a great opportunity to be an 8th or 9th inning stud for the Padres. He has the tools to do so; he just needs his head on straight. Between the winning culture and the veteran presence on the Padres, Kela will fall right in line and become a major piece of the Padres bullpen. I’d much rather sign Kela than be stuck with someone like Kenley Janson and his huge contract. Great deal for San Diego and it really solidifies their bullpen.

I was hoping he would sign with the Reds or the Yankees 😉

Off topic-
Found Bauers response to Tatis contract a bit cringy on Twitter . Its one thing to play out your own saga but stay out of this kids biz man…
Not a Bauer hater, ill root like hell for him this year and I think he will bring some much needed fire (WS hangover) but cmon man Rule #1 Biggy- Dont mess with other peoples money man, reeked of self promotion for him and Luba

Kela is a great pickup because whatever Pittsburgh is doing with pitchers is exactly opposite of what they should be doing. We see good pitchers go in there and suddenly suck (Archer, Kela), and pitchers that suck there leave and suddenly become great (Cole). Kela and Taillon are reasonably good bets to break out this year.

Col,you probably should be demoted to maj.Anyone who follows the Pirates even a little knows that Kela and Taillon have been hurt probably 60% of the time with the Pirates and pitched well otherwise.Archer was overrated, and hurt some of the time also.Cole had missed time in a couple of years, and in some ways immature. He was the tirst pick in the entire 2011 draft so everyone knew his potential.
Any sins of the previous pitching coaching have been retired for the last year with a new coaching staff.
