The Mets have designated catcher Ali Sanchez for assignment, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reports on Twitter. His roster spot was needed to make way for the team’s new addition this evening.
Sanchez, 24, becomes the second player to lose a Mets 40-man spot this evening. He reached the majors briefly in 2020, getting enough time to record his first hit but little more. Sanchez earned that opportunity primarily with his glovework, as he carries a marginal .259/.317/.331 batting line over his minor-league career.

Sounds like a Rangers pickup
angt222
Funny you say that. His ceiling is probably that of Robinson Chirinos, the former TEX catcher.
angt222
For an organization that has little catching depth, I think someone else could have been DFA’d. Mets must feel he will clear waivers.
bobsnoot
Well that’s a risky feel. My guess they are sold on Nido being a good backup to McCann.
angt222
Yeah Nido is the backup. It’s just that if McCann or Nido get injured I don’t see who gets the call up. That said, I see Sanchez being claimed.
Cosmo2
Do you see how terrible his minor league stats are? Doubt he gets claimed. If he does, no big loss.

Gee thanks for posting that 3 times I totally needed that. Also have you looked at his defensive stats? He’s one of the best catchers on limiting steals in the whole league.
Richard Alicea
Its not his fault, MLBTR sometimes glitches and it appears that your comment was not posted so folks click submit multiple times. I’ve learned to wait a good minute before reposting as it just takes long for the post to appear.
Cosmo2
Posted it 3 times by accident. He defense is good (although he has had trouble recently) but the offense? An under .300 OBP through much of his minor league career days he ain’t gonna cut it. Defense only makes up for so much.
Michael Chaney
Defense only makes up for so much, but if you’re such an incredible defender then teams will find a place for you. It’s how Jeff Mathis has played for so long.
MrMet33
Mets had 4 catchers on 40-man, which is max of what you’d want. Ali is expendable.
angt222
Yeah but he was better defensively behind the plate than Mazeika. Doesn’t really effect the MLB club but if there’s an injury they will be looking for a catcher to fill the void like Sánchez.
DarkSide830
that’s great but who are the other 3 players
hashtahjimboutonwasright
Oh no, not Ali Sanchez. Whatever shall Mets fans do?
Robrock30
Ali Sanchez is the worst catcher in the World. Watch this!

Metsfan9
Oh yeah one mistake in his first MLB game totally defines his career
Robrock30
Except that was super embarrassing and 3 defensive mistakes both physical and mental on one baserunner who ran around the bases on him and he can’t hit at all.
Bill
How did you do in your first MLB game?
Robrock30
I think it is fair to say, he is no Jerry Grote back there. LOL
Cohens_Wallet
These comments be too funny.
BobbyKidd1965
As a Mets fan in 2021 when lolmets no longer applies because we’re no longer imprisoned by lolwilpon, I’m no longer worried about who gets let go or acquired. They’re rebuilding our future and I trust Alderson and Cohen completely. Good luck to you, Kevin Plawecki, err… I mean Ali Sanchez… whoever.
NMK 2
There had to be a smarter option than dropping a defensively-sound catcher. Not like this is a big deal, but it’s the small move that bites in August when one of the ML backstops pulls a hammy and need a month on the shelf.
angt222
Exactly.
Richard Alicea
No big loss, he was another Plawecki but with less power, that would have translated to about one homer in 300 ABs and 50 hits over 300 ABs. I’m OK with that. Now the kid they picked up is a runner and it looks like he was starting to perform well before COVID.
Phantom X
So Sanchez was brought up for his glove work, and then designated because his batting stats are what they are. Shouldn’t that mean that Bryon Buxton should also be designated? I don’t understand how this changes depending on the player. You could say the same thing for JBJ.
angt222
All it takes if for McCann or Nido to hit the IL and the Mets FO will be looking to acquire a catcher just like him.
Cosmo2
Ali Sanchez makes Byron Buxton look like Babe Ruth.
Phantom X
Are we sure. I’m pretty sure outside of hitting more homeruns, that Buxton can’t hit the broad side of a barn and has about the same OBP average, which is not much higher than .300
Cosmo2
Sanchez’ best OBP was .326, worst .260, generally under .300 with no power. And this he’s doing in the minors so he projects to be even worse in the majors. So I’d say he’s MUCH worse than Buxton.
Orel Saxhiser
He won’t be without a team for too long. Ed Norton has a couple of openings on his stickball team.

The Mets picked the guy they felt would most likely clear waivers. I doubt he gets picked up
jim stem
Wasn’t Sanchez supposed to be one of our top prospects? If so, I’m really surprised he wasn’t a bargaining chip in a deal instead of just dfa’d. I’m sure the Pirates, Royals or Marlins will place a claim.
raisinsss
Are you thinking of Alvarez?
Sanchez was always glove first with a ceiling of ml backup. There’s some value there but it’s not substantial as these types are pretty common.
GarryHarris
Ali Sanchez isn’t a very good defensive catcher so, this just makes sense.
