The Mariners announced that they’ve designated right-hander Robert Dugger for assignment in order to open a spot on the roster for righty Ken Giles, whose two-year contract is now official.
Dugger, 25, was an 18th-round pick of the Mariners back in 2016 who was traded to the Marlins in the deal that brought Dee Strange-Gordon to Seattle. Dugger made his big league debut in Miami but didn’t find much success in parts of two seasons there, posting a 7.40 ERA with a 13.7 percent strikeout rate and 9.4 percent walk rate in 45 innings. Dugger’s struggles have persisted in Triple-A, although he had a solid track record up through the Double-A level, where he owns a 3.60 ERA with solid strikeout and walk numbers through 180 innings of work.
Seattle claimed Dugger back from the Marlins in early December when Miami designated him for assignment, and the Mariners will now have a week to trade him or pass him through outright waivers. If he goes unclaimed, Dugger would remain with the organization (without the 40-man spot) and likely return to big league camp as a non-roster invitee.
The pair of moves leaves Seattle’s 40-man roster at capacity, although since Giles is recovering from Tommy John surgery, he could be placed on the 60-day injured list to open a spot if the Mariners make another late addition.

Not for the Mariners.
(Or Mets.)
DarkSide830
kinda silly you have to designate someone to add a player who is going to go right on the 60 day.
schwender
Makes you wonder why they didn’t delay the Paxton announcement to, ya know, put Giles on the 60IL first.
Stevil
They did delay the Paxton announcement. They put Munoz on the 60-day IL to make room for him.
Stevil
I should note that delays like his are pretty standard as the player has to pass a physical, and Munoz was already on the roster. He just had to be transferred. Different story with Giles, as they have to have space to add him before they can transfer him to the 60.
HalosHeavenJJ
Exactly. Have to create a spot for a player who will be immediately removed from that spot.
houkenflouken
That is weird. Especially since we added Munoz to the 60-day when we added Paxton the other day. We couldn’t do the same with Giles? I guess dugger will probably pass through waivers anyways
Benjamin560
Could care less about losing Dugger. Wish him and his career much success.
BuddyBoy
Yep
Stevil
Whoops, didn’t realize you beat me to the punch.
But yeah, there is a good chance Dugger will pass through at this point, and if he doesn’t, they’ll live.

With the Paxton signing cementing the starting 5, plus Margevicius, Dunn, and Newsome ahead of him, I didn’t expect him to make it through spring. They also have Gilbert and McCaughan in the minors, plus Graveman, Swanson, and Misiewicz all previous starters who could be possible fill ins if needed, I’m guessing he was basically brought in to be some Dipoto wall spaghetti until they knew what kind of starters they could secure. It’s not like Robert Dugger level pitchers aren’t available all through spring.

His minor league number outside of 10 AAA games look ok, mostly because of a low HR rate which hasn’t translated to the majors let alone his 2019 AAA stint, I think he’s likely on the DFA circuit. I don’t know anything about his stuff outside of the fact that it appears below average, at least per Fangraphs. ZIPS sees him as a #4/5 type so maybe he catches on at some point.
bloomquist4hof
I’ll take 2 teams in one offseason willing to DFA him as saying more than ZIPS at this point anyway.
myaccount
We won’t have a starting 5, we’ll have a starting 6.
Spike 13
They’re hoping someone will be willing to give them a ptbnl or other asset.
ayrbhoy
I’d bet that no-one picks him up and that the M’s plan to make him a non-roster invitee for camp. Nothing to see here…

The Dugger “brothers” can now reunite in San Francisco !!
ScoBoe
Never understood why Mariners let Art Warren go BUT signed Domingo Tapia and Dugger…
Stevil
ScoBoe, his arm was junk. He lost command, lost control, lost velocity. He was on the taxi-squad, but he never got the call despite Seattle being desperate for relief help. And if you weren’t aware, Texas DFAd him as well, then traded him to Cincinnati for cash.
