With Nolan Arenado now officially on his way to the Cardinals, questions have inevitably turned to the future of another star Rockies infielder in Trevor Story. The shortstop is entering the final year of his contract, but the team expects that Story will begin 2021 in a Colorado uniform, as GM Jeff Bridich told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (Twitter links) and other reporters today.
Bridich stopped short of saying that Story wouldn’t be traded whatsoever, as “it’s very difficult to predict what the coming months will look like.” Beyond just Story, however, Bridich more firmly stated that the Arenado trade wasn’t the first of many for his team. “This certainly is not a total tear-down and rebuild….If that was the case, certain players already would have been traded,” the general manager said.
That comment could be a more pointed reference to Story, considering how Story can be a free agent next winter. The shortstop has been cited as a logical trade candidate for months, though while reports in December suggested the Rox were at least considering the possibility, there hasn’t been much in the way of concrete news about specific teams pursuing Story. That said, it’s probably safe to assume that every team in need of a shortstop this offseason at least placed a call to Bridich to check in on Story’s availability.
While that list of possible suitors has narrowed as several notable shortstops have come off the board in free agency and in the trade market, there would certainly still be plenty of interest in Story if the Rockies changed course and shopped him now, or even in midseason as a pure trade deadline rental. A case could certainly be made that Colorado is better off moving him now in order to maximize Story’s trade return, since waiting until closer to the trade deadline creates added risk of an injury, or Story struggling, or teams being less willing to give up multiple prospects since they’d only have Story for a portion of a season rather than all of 2021.
However, the Rockies seem intent on not throwing in the towel on the coming season. At today’s press conference, owner Dick Monfort told The Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders and other media that “I truly believe this is a very talented team that underperformed the last two years.” Monfort has been notably over-optimistic about his team in the past (most notably his prediction almost exactly one year ago that the 2020 Rockies would win 94 games), and even if the Rockies were better than their 2019-20 records indicate, that certainly isn’t a promise of future success. Colorado has done little this offseason besides trade Arenado, while the Dodgers and Padres now seem prepared to dominate the NL West for years to come.

That’s great. Now trade German Marquez to the Jays for a bag of balls and we are good!
jdgoat
I could get behind that. He’s going to be considered one of the best pitchers in the game once hes out of Coors. His home-road splits are ridiculous.

And 50 Million!

And Story to the Reds for the same deal, plz

Balls for everyone!

If the Rockies really want to shed some payroll, off up Marquez…to the first team willing to take on Blackmon’s contract with him!

In a couple weeks it’ll probably be a different Story.

So the Story goes….

Story is destined to replace Elvis in Texas. Are they willing to trade Josh Jung to replace Nolan in Colorado or take a risk and get him in free agency?
Yankee Clipper
You misspelled Texas Rangers fan in your moniker.
rangers13
Seriously doubt Texas would do that in any situation, but definitely not w/o a long term commitment to Rangers on Story’s behalf. Perhaps Apostel or Wendtzel + Winn for Story this year with at least a 4-5 yr. extension guarantee. Other than that they will wait til FA next year, if I they want him.
bravesiowafan
If he gets extended it will be at free agent cost so much more then 5 yrs
Spare Tire Dixon
As fans, we always seem to overstate the “hometown” factor, but Story would indeed be the sort of superstar the Rangers should invest in. They currently have no stars for fans to go see in that beautiful new park

You might try stop sleeping with John Mozeliaks wife so you don’t have to be so nice to him.

I got five pieces of candy!”
“I got a chocolate bar!”
“I got a quarter!”
…”I got a rox
mlbnyyfan
Because hopefully Story makes Texas relevant again. They have a new stadium and need a super star to attract fans eventually.

Thank you for doing this

Cardinals will give you Carpenter and bag of peanuts

This makes Trevor sad.

“Let’s pay another team to take our franchise player and get no potential foundational pieces back because we think we’re just underperforming and intend to be competitive next season.”
Everyone knows you have no money to spend and little on the way of prospects. You’re going to rebuild. Steer into it. This half-a** measure is why most teams never even have a shot. Rockies are just the latest example of teams who have no direction.
A fish rots from the head down…
bbatardo
Yeah no kidding. I suspect a new GM will be brought in once the official rebuild starts.
baumann
It’s amazing Bridich still has a job, but do you trust Monfort at all to bring in a GM that will be more aggressive and have a plan? Seems like a big part of their problem is a delusional owner.
iml12
Keeping Story makes absolutely no sense. With no DH in NL his value has to be on the rise.
bravesiowafan
Brandon’s I don’t think you realize the situation the Rockies were in. They had zero leverage for a good return unless they paid a majority of that contract. Nolan did a good job at forcing the Rockies hand and having little to no leverage on the return from other teams. The Rockies had to get rid of a contract that exceeds anything signed in free agency, and when the ppl who are submitting bids for Nolan know that situation it leads to directly what happened a salary dump in most regards
brandons-3
The Rockies (Jeff Bridich) created the situation they found themselves in with Arenado and their organization. Beyond the Arenado fiasco, the Rockies have made the playoffs once in the six years Bridich has taken over. They’ll have a new general manager in short order.
Bruin1012
Colorado has to tear it down now they need to get maximum value for there tradable players. This team has very little chance to compete in say the next 3-4 years. They have to build pitching from within no big free agent pitchers are going to want to sign with Colorado. I get that Arenado had very little value but Marquez, Story, and Freeland and a few other should refill the coffers with quality prospects. Anything less then a complete tear down and rebuild is irresponsible at this point. The only reason that you don’t is if you very little faith in your GM then you should get rid of him.

Translation: After the Arenado trade I’d have to go into protective custody if I traded Trevor.

As someone who lived through the Wilpons, I’m sorry Rockies fans. Hopefully you’ll be saved one day.

Story & Ian Desmond to ATL, for Tucker Davidson, Austin Riley, Ender Inciarte, & Kyle Wright.
RunDMC
Yeesh, what a sad story that would be. Ender and Desmond’s money basically offsets (+2M buyout for Desmond), so Davidson, Wright & Riley for 1 year of Story and maybe the compensation of a draft pick if offered QO AND he declines.
I like Story, but there’s still a lot of risk from him leaving COL, where his numbers steeply decline, Swanson was one of best hitters in his first injury-free (condensed) season, so without Riley you’re hoping for either Swanson, Story will move to 3B (or worse, Camargo…). When you subtract the depth that Davidson/Wright provide and Riley’s potential and ability to play 3B/LF and add Desmond with Story — that trade makes the team worse, imho. We can do better than Desmond for very little.
solaris602
Even if the Rockies signed the remaining top 5 free agents AND traded for Kris Bryant, they’d still finish 3rd in the West. To think that this team as it is currently constructed has any realistic shot at challenging the Dodgers and Padres is just pure fantasy.
hurricanewar23
Colorado should trade him while they can get some value out of him if they are in rebuild mode!

I’m trying to decide which baseball Ops dept. is the most incompetent, and Colorado has to be right there with Philly & BMore.

Story and Marquez to the Yankees for Voit, Andujar, Florial, Peraza, Gil, Abreu
slider32
How about Story and Marquez to Yanks for Torres, Garcia, Florial, Gomez and Perazza.?
YankeesBleacherCreature
Colorado bc none of the moves they’ve made in recent years have made any sense. At the minimum, the Phillies signed Bryce Harper to get eyeballs.
kyletw
Eerily reminiscent of the Yelich situation in Miami. Let’s get Story to Milwaukee. I’m sure the Rox would take a package of Lorenzo Cain and Vogelbach hahaha
JoeBrady
Keeping him to start the season is the right move.
But that’s only because not having moved him already is an awful move. If you want to go for it, I would disagree, but be my guest. But then why trade Arenado?
Now the problem is that you need to trade Story But the time to have traded Story was before Philly signed Didi, and before To signed Semien, and before the NYY signed DJLM Now there is no market for Story, and likely not to have a robust market for him in July.
YankeesBleacherCreature
In other news, Trevor Story will be traded in the coming months. This is a rebuild, Bridich, after trading away your franchise player. Who are you kidding??

Story to the Yanks for Urshella, Flores, and Perazza. Torres moves to third for the Yanks and Urshella replaces Arenado.

Every Rockies post on Facebook right now is just flooded with “fire Jeff Briddich” messages. Only way I can think of making the owner aware that business as usual is not acceptable is to look to join a new fandom ♂️. I love baseball and grew up in Colorado but I’m not going to spend another dime to support stupidity like this.
GF1964
Story will be gone by the trade deadline if not sooner. You can bet the Rocks are already getting offers but after the fleecing they recently took I doubt anything will happen till then to try and hide their utter embarrassment of how poorly they handled the situation with Arenado.
It is time for the Monforts to sell the team. This isn’t about getting an owner with deeper pockets but an owner who is a better leader and makes better baseball decisions. The fiasco that just happened started with Charlie and isn’t the first of many bad, bad decisions by him.
The saving grace is their great fan support of what has been a rather bad product under the Monforts. The money keeps pouring in even if the team stinks….until Covid. Of all the franchises I think it hurt the Rocks the worst. Most of their money comes from 30,000+ fans 81 times a year. Even when the team loses close to a hundred games!
Maybe it is time the loyal fan stops going to games and forces the Monfort’s to sell.
I will always be grateful for their helping bring Major League Baseball to Colorado but they are not baseball people and wont hire baseball people to run the organization. This is a mid market team that must depend on their draft & development to field a good team. Their drafts have been below average for most of their existence and their minor league system has been mostly a joke. Still under three different GM’s the Monfort’s stick to the same failed draft & development plan hoping for different results. What did Einstein say about this theory?
It is time for new leadership and that means the Monfort’s need to be a part of the Rockies past not their future.

Trevor is extremely valuable, but I’m not sure of the obvious fit for him and his last remaining year among the contenders.
