The Cubs have agreed to a handful of minor league pacts, Baseball America’s Chris Hilburn-Trenkle reports in his latest minor transactions roundup. Left-hander Rex Brothers, right-hander Joe Biagini, outfielder Nick Martini and corner infielder Patrick Wisdom have all joined the organization. Presumably, they’ll all be in big league camp.
Brothers, 33, tossed 3 1/3 innings with the Cubs last year and was tagged for three runs in that time. He spent the bulk of the season at Chicago’s alternate training site. Brothers looked the part of a potential lights-out reliever early in his career, logging a 2.82 ERA and 29.2 percent strikeout rate through his first 175 2/3 innings with the Rockies in 2011-13.
Brothers struggled through a brutal 2014 season, however, and he’s only pitched sparingly in the Majors since that time (37 1/3 total innings). Overall, the lefty carries a 3.84 ERA in the big leagues, but all of his success came in that early Rockies run. He’s punched out nearly 34 percent of hitters faced in parts of six Triple-A seasons, though, and his ability to miss bats continues to intrigue teams even if it’s paired with shaky control.
Biagini, 30, had a strong rookie season with the Blue Jays as a Rule 5 pick back in 2016. Toronto tried to move him into the rotation in 2017, though, and over the next two years he struggled in that role and in a return to the bullpen.
Biagini looked to have righted the ship in 2019, pitching to a 3.78 ERA through 50 frames before being traded to the Astros alongside Aaron Sanchez, but his brief tenure in Houston proved to be a nightmare. In 19 innings from 2019-20, he yielded 22 runs on 31 hits (seven homers) and 13 walks. He’s had success out of the ’pen on multiple occasions with the Jays, and he can perhaps give Chicago some right-handed depth in that regard.
Martini, also 30, has been an OBP machine in the upper minors and even in his brief time at the MLB level. From 2018-19 between the A’s and Padres, he slashed .269/.372/.380 in 288 trips to the plate. The left-handed-hitting Martini has had similar OBP-driven value at the plate in Triple-A, where he’s a .305/.401/.435 hitter in more than 1400 plate appearances. For a Cubs team that has wanted to cut down on its strikeouts, he’s an intriguing depth option to stash in the event of an injury at the big league level. Martini has experience at all three outfield spots but has worked mostly in the corners in recent minor league seasons.
The 29-year-old Wisdom was hitless with two plate appearances as a Cub in 2020 and carries a .218/.299/.397 batting line through 88 plate appearances over the past three seasons. The longtime Cardinals prospect has shown some power at the Triple-A level but has also been prone to strikeouts there. He’s a .252/.328/.478 hitter in parts of four seasons of Triple-A ball but has experience at both first base and third base.

Remember when Biagini looked like he could be something really good? Then he was shuttled from the rotation to the pen over and over, never refound his rhythm, and then lost his spot on the roster. Baseball is unfair that way.
jdgoat
He was probably going to be a one year wonder anyways, but they shouldn’t have messed with a good thing and just kept him in the bullpen. Getting an effective reliever out of the rule 5 draft is already a win considering nothing of value usually comes out of that draft. Once he found that success, I’d just forget any thought of moving any rule 5 guy back to a starting role.

Jays plan to do the same thing to Merryweather and Hatch this season, apparently.

Remember when Theo said Cub fans can expect to see wave after wave of solid prospects coming up soon?

I have actually never heard of Rex Brothers and read it as the Cubs signing the Rex brothers as in two brothers haha. Every team does sign these minor league deals but other than maybe the Indians I can’t remember a team as good as the Cubs as committed to being bad

Big Dan Brouthers is in the Hall Of Fame but its not spelled the same as Rex spells his last name.

Had the same thought. It seemed nice that these brothers were so close that they had to sign with the same teams throughout their careers. “Not without my brother!” was the rallying cry of the Rex boys.

Come join the Rex brothers and the Rex sister, Dot! Just for fun, we run around the baseball parking lot. They lock us in our lockers whenever we get caught, but we break loose and then vamoose and now you know the plot!

Hopefully tyrannosaurus gets some time in the outfield. Too bad he tends to short arm the ball so he needs to play shallow. Oedipus will make a great addition to the bullpen. Good cutter.

What a true embarrassment of an organization the Cubs are……LOLOLOLOLOL
Big Hurt
Don’t come in here and give the Big Hurt a bad name… 😉 no need to worry about the Cubs – the Sox are finally great again and we can be excited about our team!
adkuchan
Last time the Sox won their division half the guys on the current team were in junior high.
Last time the Cubs won their division was 6 months ago.
How embarrassing… for you.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
@adkuchan, Fair enough, I guess, but the Sox actually got a playoff win last year, ended with the better record, and are much better situated going forward. I’m glad the Cubbies got their title, but they kind of mucked up, even in getting it. Sox are on the rise and the only reason the Cubs still have a shot at the playoffs is because the NL Central is the worst division in baseball.
iml12
Nl central is horrendous but the Al central were the dregs of the league for a decade. It’s hilarious if you look at a minors transaction page for the cubs it has 50 percent post from white Sox fans to come tell us how good they are this year. Cool guys.
Twinsfan333
@iml12 yes I’ve noticed that too from afar. It for sure seems like some sort of inferiority complex.
mike127
Yep, hyrax—worst division in baseball—-the one with four playoff teams last year. Remember the White Sox were 21-3 against the Tigers, Royals, and Pirates last year——14-22 against the rest of the central teams.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
@Mike, it goes the other way, too. Sox were 2-8 against the Indians, so take that out and the record against the other teams isn’t so bad.
As for four teams in, they’d have had only two in a normal playoff season. The Cards and Reds were a mighty 2 games over .500, while the Brewers snuck in at 2 games under .500, winning a tie-breaker against the Giants, while all three AL Central teams to make it finished with a better record than the NL Central Champ Cubs. The Indians are taking a step back, but the Twins are still strong, the White Sox got better, and even the Royals should be significantly improved. Meanwhile, the Pirates got worse (if that’s possible), the Cubs got significantly worse after trading (giving away Darvish), and the Reds have traded away or let go of several assets. Only the Cardinals are significantly better going into this year than last. When a division could be taken by a team winning just 85 games, that’s a weak division.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
@iml12, There are a bunch of Cubs and Twins trolls on White Sox posts, saying the same crap as above about how the White Sox haven’t won in ages because it’s the only defense they have now that the Sox are on the rise. Enjoy your condescension. We’ll see who finishes with the better record (again) in a little less than 8 months.
IronBallsMcGinty
The last time the Sox won the world series they got it done in four games. The last time the cubs won the world series it took seven games in which they almost blew it at the very end.

Damn, Rex Brothers is still at it! I remember him as a flame throwing lefty with the Rockies back in the (very) early teens.

Rex Brothers bringing that pedigree with 37 IP since 2014 back in for another season, assuming he did not tear a ligament signing the contract.

Good to see Rex can still find work.

Patrick Wisdom, wow we just don’t have enough swing and miss guys in the organization.

I just can’t stop laughing at what the cubs have accomplished this off season. A couple of years ago they were telling us how the cubs would be a dynasty. How they print money and would never be the laughing stock of baseball as they had been for over 108 years.
bronyaur
Last 7 seasons:
White Sox: 464-570 (.449), 1 playoff appearance
Cubs: 597-474 (.557), 5 playoff appearances, 1 WS win
All time:
Sox: All time win %: .502, 10 playoff appearances, 6 pennants, 119 seasons
Cubs: All time win %: .514 , 21 playoff appearances, 17 pennants, 144 seasons
Per 100 years of play:
Sox: 5.o4 playoff appearances
Cubs: 11.8 playoff appearances
So, if Sox fans want to mock fans of other teams based on competitive quality, either recently or all time, they are pretty dumb and hilariously poorly informed if they choose to pick on Cubs fans.

There is only one franchise in the history of baseball that collectively has never been below .500———-that franchise is the Cubs. NEVER below .500 as a franchise.

Nothing like cherry pick stats to fit your narrative…..like the +350 wins the Chicago White Stockings had in the 1800’s or the playoff appearances excluding a time period the CWS were actively in the playoffs 1901-1919.
bronyaur
The immediate past seven years, all-time records, and normalizing for different franchise season numbers doesn’t exactly seem like cherry-picking to me. But you do you, even if it means not comprehending that all time records in fact include the 1901-1919 period.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
I get annoyed when Yankees fans wave all their titles in everyone’s faces as indisputable proof that the Yankees will win it all this year. Most of the titles were won before most current Yankees fans were even alive. When Cubs fans get all high and mighty over their glorious history, it’s just hilarious.
oldtimer
It’s very sad for the Cubs to have waited so long for an owner that would put the club first and put people in place to right the ship and keep it on course. You were fooled into thinking you had one. Instead you got a selfish one who puts his own interests ahead of anything else. He thought sinking all that money into Wrigleyville would be a cash cow that would keep paying dividends. It’s been a cash drain and then a couple bad signings and 2020 capped it all off. It’s embarrassing what he’s done to the club then the disaster with Marquee! He can’t get out of his own road. Not sure if he will ever recover!
msqboxer
I get the methodology now…..The Cubs are EBay, at the trade deadline list everyone for sale and hope a couple of these guys draw interest and maybe score a minor leaguer that has a 25% chance of making it to the bigs in 3 years.
George hubschman, roto imbeciles
I remember when Rex Brothers was a semi-prospect with the Rockies around 10 yrs back. By the by, as (kind of) a youngster, I was a big fan of the band Ten Years After featuring lead man Alvin Lee. Brothers bugaboo, as has been mentioned by some of these great baseball minds, has always been his generosity with the free pass. 157 of them in 269 IP to be exact! But yes, let’s harken back to a better time when Brothers had 19 saves with the Rox a lifetime ago (2013). He even had a 3.1 WAR that season which, for a RP, is really something to phone home about. In finality I’d like to add, “I’d love to change the world, but I don’t know what to do!”
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
The only only worth keeping at least for a little bit is nick martinis. He’s from Crystal Lake. Which is only an hour train ride from Chicago. I also lived there for 7 years.
iml12
I remember he hit a homerun against the cubs in Wrigley 2 years. He had tons of family at the game.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Yup. It’s just one of those feel good stories. And crystal lake isn’t that exciting so it’s pretty cool seeing someone from a small town that made the Major Leagues. Which is already extremely hard to do.
Fred K. Burke
Really like the Rex Brothers signing. Tomorrow, the Cubs sign the Marx Brothers. All four of them. Graucho, Chico, Harpo and Zeppo.

The obsession with the Cubs that some non-Cub fans have here is both bizarre and fascinating…

I remember them from an episode of “Newhart”
