The Astros and star shortstop Carlos Correa agreed on a one-year, $11.7MM deal for 2021, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (via Twitter). The two sides avoid a potentially contentious arbitration hearing in the process. The Astros ultimately gave some ground after submitting a $9.75MM arbitration figure as counter to Correa’s own $12.5MM submission. Correa is rpresented by Jon Rosen of WME.
Coming in above the midpoint may be a small concession on the Astros’ part, especially if it keeps relations cordial heading into Correa’s final season before free agency. Correa has expressed a desire to stay in Houston long-term, though the club has shown a willingness to let superstars walk. They have, after all, watched Gerrit Cole and George Springer leave in free agency in consecutive seasons. If Correa does not sign a long-term extension, he’s set to join stacked free agent class of shortstops next winter that could also feature Francisco Lindor, Trevor Story, Javier Baez, Andrelton Simmons, Marcus Semien, and Corey Seager.
Even among that stellar group of shortstops, Correa stands out as a two-way superstar with 6.6 bWAR per 600 plate appearances and 10.4 defensive runs saved per 1,300 innings over his career. Those numbers in a single season would indeed place Correa in the highest echelon of stud shortstops, a potential he has flashed at times both in the regular season and playoffs. The 26-year-old has struggled to stay healthy over the course of a full season, however. He has appeared in more than 110 games just one time through his first six seasons.
Yankee Clipper
…….. for the last time.
30 Parks
Overrated.
jjd002
In what way?
JimmyTheC
The inability to stay healthy way.
jjd002
That has nothing to do with someone saying he’s overrated. Dude needs to provide something fact-based.
30 Parks
The guy fractured his rib getting a massage – overrated. No further questions, your honor.
jjd002
*guy got caught by his wife doing something he should not have.
JimmyTheC
He’s missed 194 games the last four years. This is a fact, and it is indisputable.
pinstripes17
He’s not as good as people say he is
pc01
Well since all the experts on this board say he’s a bum, who are all these people you are referring to?
Yankee Clipper
P17: Thing is, he’s been atop the leaderboards (top 4) for ss and he has youth in his side, along with Seager, to be poached next offseason by any high-budget team in need of a ss (Please not the Yankees!)
Cheating, not cheating, either way he’s young and has a good resume for FA. It’ll be interesting to see how much he’s valued after this full season, especially if he’s healthy the whole year.
takeitback
Lol!
Yankee Clipper
One additional point I forgot to make specifically about Correa, but may apply to Seager as well – I wonder about his ability to stay at SS for the long-term because of his size. Although his height isn’t prohibitive (slightly taller than), he does have a bigger frame, and I’m think that may be the combination ripe for injuries down the road if he isn’t shifted. But, who knows, Jeter played there for 20 years, literally….
jjd002
One thing about Correa is he works his butt off, especially on defense.
bleedingblue1996
And cheating
raft
Jeter is a bad example, he was a below average ss.
SeeGilley
He’s better than people say he is!
mlb1225
something something trash can joke something something something
Coast1
Does the trash can get a percentage or does it have to go to arbitration itself?
Scrap1ron
Testing his free agent market worth next year in that group of SS could be a disappointing dose of reality.
pinstripes17
Loudmouth cheater
mro940
Underrated observation. Quieter known cheaters like Mookie and Springer have shown a shut mouth can get them well-paid.
Although Bauer has been caught using foreign substances to increase his spin rate (check it out on Youtube; excellent stuff!) and he is quite the loudmouth.
pinstripes17
Bauer is actually good that’s the difference, Correa is overrated.
bigb82000
Bauer can be good, however there have been other years where he has been awful.
CamFrost
Bauer has had 2 good years and 1 of them was 11 starts. To say Correa is overrated, but use Bauer as the opposite example is pretty hilarious. But it would make sense coming from “pinstripes17.”
jdgoat
Carlos Correa, the guys with 26.3 career WAR and an OPS above .830, is not actually good. The more you know!
DarkSide830
Bauer is not worthy of a record AAV (which is what he’d effectively getting)

Do it without knowing what’s coming and I’ll be impressed. Numbers with an asterisk next to them aren’t a flex.
raft
The Yankees don’t know a lot about ss, they don’t have one.
raft
The Astros have owned the Yankees for the past five years.
goastros123
Please, dude. Yankees fans were salty in 2017 even before the cheating scandal began. I saw the saltiness first hand.
jdgoat
Do you understand the irony of you being a Yankees fan and being upset about this?
whiplash
Where’s that confidential letter the Yankees are so eager to hide? Must be nice to have deep pockets
jopeness
could you elaborate on Mookie? is it based on the Cora year and the .346 avg or something else?
jjd002
So you are saying Mookie gets a pass for doing the same stuff? Shockingly all of the star players that were doing it are all still stars.
all in the suit that you wear
No one will credibly elaborate on Mookie. The investigation into the 2018 Red Sox failed to document a single instance of cheating. No video. No accounts of a particular at bat or game. After months of searching. People should really read the commissioner’s report. The report admits they “largely do not have direct evidence” and they made “inferences” to give them a light penalty.
jopeness
if this was a reply to me. Not at all, its honestly the first time I’ve seen an accusation of him as a cheater. and OP was broad so I asked for more information.
SeeGilley
Hey pinstripes, have you ever cheated on anything? Let’s hear your story. If you have cheated on someone or something in your life well then I guess it’s time for you to forgive and forget. It will do your soul good and make you feel good about yourself. Same with the rest of you. Your story is getting quite stale. Come on guys give it up and lets talk some baseball.

Think I missed the signal as I didn’t see this one coming. Glad they could bang it out.

11.7MM? Not bad, not bad at all…
all in the suit that you wear
Not bad to go from $8M to $11.7M after having a bit of an off year in 2020.
sufferforsnakes
Talented, but brittle.
MetsFan22
What people don’t understand is that the Mets didn’t need Bauer. They are already an elite team.
bigb82000
Haha, and the Dodgers did. That is a joke. The Mets probably needed Bauer to compete against the Braves. The Dodgers already have everything they need.
lettersandnumbersonly
Dodger fans might show just a bit of humility after going more than 30 years between Series wins.
DarkSide830
as opposed to the numerous teams that haven’t won in that span or have never one one at all?
MetsFan22
The Mets have a better roster than both the dodgers and Braves. Dodgers will win more games because their division isn’t as good.
DarkSide830
no. that 1st sentence is 100% wrong.
bigb82000
Did you say the same thing when you got Cano and Diaz?
Yankee Clipper
Mets22: Your team’s roster is really good, no doubt. But, better than ATL & LAD? Wow, I’m not so so sure that’s a claim one can make even on paper. In fact, I’m of the opinion that until some team is *clearly* above and beyond the LAD, we must assume, both on paper and practically, LAD is the best team in MLB.
Last year was not an aberration. They’ve been a playoff team for several seasons. They’re like the Yankees, except they continued to improve and had pitching. And, they just added again. Mets are good, top 5 possibly, but LAD takes the cake brother.
jdgoat
Cohen is going to prison, Lindor is a one year rental. The Mets is the Mets.
MetsFan22
Cohen is an angel. One of the nicest owners too. Why would he gi to jail?
Rangers29
^ That’s bait.
DarkSide830
this is the worst troll job ive seen
pinstripes17
Metsfan – there’s no way you are serious, elite troll right here.
1984wasntamanual
I’ve been saying that for a couple months now. The way he brings them up in conversations that have nothing to do with them gives it away. He is pretty good, though
lettersandnumbersonly
An elite team would win more than 85 games in a season. Which I’m thinking the Mets will struggle to do in 2021.
MetsFan22
If you really think that you should follow the Mets better.
hoff38
If I am a FA SS next year I want to be aggressive and sign early, otherwise you may end up on a team and with a contract you don’t really want.
shane
Smart like rock.
mlbnyyfan
Do they sign him or trade him for prospects? Did they let Springer walk to have some flexibility to keep Carlos?
cuppage101
I think they keep him. they will have a lot of financial obligations in verlander and grienke coming off in the next couple of seasons
jjd002
They knew the time would come when they had to make some decisions on their stars. Springer was not worth keeping around at the expense of the other three based off of the age/dollars.
CoachCutter
Houston has had a top 5 payroll for the last 4 to 5 years and Crane has said they always will be…. the comment about being poached by a big budget team is non- sense. I believe they are only about 11 million under the luxury tax at present.
Next year JV comes off the books so there will be more than enough to sign CC long term if they choose.
MoRivera 1999
Well, they’ve got the 4th or 5th largest market, so they can afford it. More power to them.
Yankee Clipper
Uh, yeah, if I’m not mistaken, isn’t the owner worth more than the Yankees’ owner by about a billion dollars? I call horse manure!
Barkerboy
Wham bam thank you spam!
johndietz
I remember when this guy was supposed to be the next superstar. There’s no substitute for staying healthy
Ed Edmonds
Astros also settled a case last year avoiding a hearing after exchanging figures when George Springer signed for $1m above the midpoint. Thus, Houston turned aside the file-and-go or file-and-trial system that all teams are supposedly following. Plus, Springer left via free agency last month.
