The Yankees have agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Socrates Brito, tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. The MAS+ client will be invited to Major League Spring Training.
Brito, 28, signed a minor league deal with the Pirates last year and opened the shortened season in Pittsburgh’s 60-man player pool at their alternate training site in Altoona. However, Brito opted out of the remainder of the year in September following the tragic loss of his brother to Covid-19.
He’ll now join a Yankees club that has seen plenty of outfield injuries over the past couple of seasons, which could afford him another opportunity in the big leagues. Brito has spent parts of four seasons in the Majors between Arizona and Toronto, but he’s yet to replicate the solid production he posted in his first cup of coffee when he batted .303/.324/.455 in 18 games with the 2015 D-backs. Brito carries just a .525 OPS in 218 Major League plate appearances, but he’s notched a much more impressive .297/.345/.491 batting line in 1541 plate appearances at the Triple-A level.
Plato and Aristotle still on the market but expected to sign soon.
lol made me laugh
But you really Kant sign them.
“All we are is dust in the wind dude”
“Dust…..wind……dude”
Excellent!
Finally Ninja Cash gets his man.
The laugh I needed today. Cheers!
Gio project 2.0
He is destined to end up playing in Greece
Yankees got their man! Watch out AL East, you’ve been put on notice
Like
Did Cash do it again or did Cash do it again?? So brilliant. Tremendous upside to hide in the minors.
No need to hide him. Nobody knows he’s there.
Gotta love a New Year’s Day signing!
The unexamined player is not worth signing.
Well done
Man, all we need is Mike Greenwell and we got the whole ‘90 outfield up in this!
I know cashman often digs up hidden gems, but come on really , these are the Yankees . Stop crying poor because maybe they lost money on the Yankee season , but I bet they made money on the yes network , shirts, memorabilia etc . They should stop this nickel and dime crap and act like the Yankees that George would be proud of
You know teams require depth pieces, no?
Tom – “You know teams require depth pieces, no?”
Most “fans” on here can not name the 40 man roster players from 26 to 40, so no depth never enters their minds…
You don’t shell out big money for minor league depth..
You’re definitely giving Metsfan22 a run for his money. Every team has a local TV contract and all MLB-licensed merchandising gets split into a revenue-sharing pool. It’s a poor argument. Are you not satisfied with Voit and Urshela? During the King George days, we didn’t have a luxury tax or an international signings money cap. What worked for the Yankees then won’t work now.
They can forget about re-signing DJ now.
Minor league depth. Cool name though.
Yankees fans: enjoy all the annoying philosophical references and failed puns
@Joel, Their puns….lame as most are (mine included), life is serious enough..no need to be raging over a random message board. If you need a hug, just ask
Very good use of a sweeping generalization, @joel. Cleverly worded, as well.
Hopefully, we are all properly chastised.
Happy New year.
Happy NY, Ducky!!
Big fat Greek outfielder still out there!
Your move AL East.
Now that that’s outta the way…hey, I didn’t know much about Voit or Urshella at one time either. So…maybe there’s something here? These depth signings are swell & all.
But wouldn’t mind seeing the Yanks make an actual move of some type.
Bill and Ted must be proud
Maybe they’re trying to stock the minors with guys who will look good in trades if they have good springs and if the minors can come back this year, so they can get pitchers or something without giving up their A-list starters or prospects and then drop quadruple-A or other reclamation players from the 40-man roster and slot in proven guys for virtually nothing.
Definitely hoping to turn these guys into another Luke Voit or Gio Urshela or Aaron Small.
It’s just minor league depth, every team has to do it.
Translation app on my phone pronounces Socrates Brito as Greek Taco?, second best Taco…only trailing the delicious fish taco
Brilliant! You just gave me an idea to try making a Greek Taco – gyro ingredients with hard shell tacos!
He was atrocious for the blue Jays., wait he was atrocious wherever he played in the majors. Good luck to him though.
Freud, Beethoven & Billy the Kid are up next.
That’s Mister The-Kid to you.
Hal needs his DNA checked.
Agreed
“And there’s Socrates, very much the man in form…”
Monty Python?
Indeed.
You never know but, I guess, we kind of do know! At the very least Brito could be good minor league depth in the OF. And with all the Yankee injuries these past few seasons, Brito may see the light of day in the Bronx. Or be just as likely to be DFA’d in the next week or 2.
*Yawn*
27! 27! 27! 27!
That will put butts in seats!
But seriously it’s just a run of the mill minor league depth signing. But my heart goes out to the man. Its rough losing family especially to covid.
Like colonel Schmidt, the only thing I know is that I know nothing
I think you mean Sergeant Schultz.
And Colonel Klink. Hooooooooogaaaaaaaaan!
Brito cannot hit anything but a fastball. Any off-speed or something that is spinning, he might as well sit down.
“I say **** you Jobu, I do it myself”
Pythagoras led the league in triples, but he rarely crossed the Plato. Maybe Socrates can get him home.
When a parent’s sense of humor goes too far.
(sigh)
Single parent. I laughed out loud & upvoted it. Of course.
Could it be that Jurickson Profar is waiting to see
If the Yankees reunite with DJ?
But are the Yankees really serious, or is this just a Socra-tease?
Sorry….not really.
A decent Triple A player. Possibly will see some action due to the Yankees history of injuries
Sign Arquimedes Caminero and get all the philosopher names! (Not quite but close enough)
Baseball Reference includes this helpful information:
Pronunciation: \SAH-kruh-teez\
So that settles it for all who’ve been pronouncing it: \SO-krates\
I’ll admit it: before I looked up Brito’s stats, I didn’t know it was possible to have a -19 OPS+.
Yankee fans are really excited about this one.
Yanks trying to get LeMahieu as cheaply as possible (4/75) and it won’t work. LA may get in the way and push price up, but no chance DJ signs for 4/75. Goodbye Tanaka.
