Once all of the details are ironed out and Nolan Arenado has been officially traded to the Cardinals, it’s possible that Rockies owner Dick Monfort and GM Jeff Bridich won’t mention the word “rebuild” when explaining the trade to fans and media. It could be sold as a perfect storm of a superstar player’s displeasure with the front office coinciding with an unprecedented economic downturn, leading the Rox with no choice but to move Arenado despite the team’s full intention to contend in 2021.
But, let’s be real — the Rockies face a big uphill battle in the NL West. The Dodgers and Padres are arguably the two best teams in baseball, the Giants are a looming threat considering all their available payroll space following the 2021 season, and even the Diamondbacks could be primed for a rebound considering they couldn’t seem to catch a break last year. After two consecutive losing seasons and the impending loss of Arenado, Colorado seems like a prime candidate to blow things up. Several trade candidates remain on the roster, each with some obstacle that could limit what the Rockies could receive back in terms of high-quality young talent.
Trevor Story’s name has been whispered in trade rumors all winter, but Story is only under contract through the 2021 season and many of the top contenders have already addressed their shortstop needs. Charlie Blackmon’s bat wasn’t quite as potent in 2020 as in past years, and trade suitors may balk at the $52MM (in guaranteed money and in two years of player options) owed to Blackmon through the 2023 season. Scott Oberg’s continued health issues make him a question mark going forward. Kyle Freeland and Antonio Senzatela each have three years of team control remaining and would definitely get some trade attention, though neither pitcher has been consistent enough to merit a blue-chip return.
Assuming the Rockies don’t go totally scorched-earth with a rebuild and start shopping former top prospect Brendan Rodgers or current top prospect Zac Veen, that leaves one player who would instantly bring back a big trade package. From an overall consideration of team control, financial cost, and Major League track record, German Marquez is not just the Rockies’ best trade chip, but one of the more intriguing trade chips in all of baseball.
Let’s begin with Marquez’s underrated statistical record, as only 14 pitchers have accumulated more fWAR than Marquez (12.2) over the last four seasons. Marquez has a 4.21 ERA and an above-average 24.2K% and 17.8K-BB% over 613 2/3 innings since the start of the 2017 season. He averaged 177 frames per year during the regulation-length 2017-19 campaigns, while tossing a league-high 81 2/3 innings in the abbreviated 2020 season. One knock on Marquez is that he allows quite a bit of hard contact, but he has limited the damage thanks to an ability to keep the ball on the ground (47.6% career grounder rate).
These are solid numbers for any hurler, but particularly impressive for someone who pitches their home games at Coors Field. As you might expect, Marquez has some pretty notable home/away splits — a 3.51 ERA in 341 1/3 road innings during his career, and a 5.10 ERA over 293 innings in Denver. It is certainly possible that the right-hander could reach another level of performance if he didn’t pitch in such a hitter-friendly environment, which makes him all the more interesting for trade suitors.
Marquez is entering his age-26 season, and is already locked up through at least the 2023 season on a five-year, $43MM contract extension signed in April 2019. $36MM remains owed to Marquez over the final three guaranteed years of that contract, which includes the $2.5MM buyout of a $16MM club option for 2024. Less than two years later, the Marquez extension still looks like a very canny move from Bridich and company, if for not quite the reason they expected — this affordable price tag makes Marquez a fit for almost every contender in the league, pandemic-lowered revenues notwithstanding.
While Marquez hasn’t had a Cy Young Award-winning peak like Blake Snell, Marquez is over two years younger than Snell, has fewer injury concerns, and is owed less money than the $39MM Snell is scheduled to make through the 2023 season. By that token, Colorado is certainly within its rights to ask for a trade return similar to what the Rays received for dealing Snell to the Padres this offseason. An enterprising team with some payroll space to spare could also sweeten the pot by offering to take some more money off the Rockies’ hands — perhaps the last $11MM remaining on Ian Desmond’s contract, in terms of salary, the buyout of his 2022 club option, and his $1MM assignment bonus in the event of a trade.
It remains to be seen if the Rockies will start a full-fledged rebuild immediately once Arenado is gone, or perhaps if the team will take the rebuild route whatsoever. There’s a ticking clock on a Story considering his lack of remaining control, but the Rockies might not be in a particular rush to move Marquez quite yet since he is still signed through 2023. The argument can be made, however, that Marquez will never be as valuable as he is right now, so if the Rockies did want to start looking to the future, the time is now to maximize their return.
Skraxx
The Rockies need to blow up, badly.
But the GM is stupid. I wonder how this’ll go. More pain?
amk1920
Their GM has added one good player to the team in 6 years and it’s Marquez. No clue how he still has a job.
bot
It’s the pride of super rich refusing to own poor baseball decisions. So they hold onto to much control and hire people who are forced to take responsibility for terrible moves.
Trading arenado is a terrible move for price to move him. As bad as it’ll ever get and solidifies the Rockies as one of the 3 worst franchises in baseball along w reds and pirates.
As a former red fan- Rockies fans should go find a new team that hires competent people to make baseball decisions. I’m rooting for the Padres this season.

Guy is a QS machine
MikeD26
The Braves should trade for story , Toronto for Márquez.
SoCalADRL
Perry Minasian needs to be in on this guy. It’ll cost them a lot but they have to make a move because Trout and Rendon aren’t getting any younger.
dan55
Yeah, I’m pretty surprised that Angels haven’t made a move for an elite starting pitcher by now. I thought they should have targeted Sonny Gray or Luis Castillo, but getting someone from Colorado would certainly help them.
Dbird777
I think the Reds should just cut the west coast middle man out and trade for Story themselves.
Loling @ you
Agree they need either freeland or marquez, Perry hasn’t done squat so far kinda shocking
cookmeister 2
Traded for a SS and a closer, signed a BP arm and a starter. Wouldn’t say that’s squat. Maybe it’s not big but all are arguably good deals
Loling @ you
And what has been angels biggest hole? Pitching alex Cobb does little to build confidence. Another trash season inbound
Down with OBP
With what prospect capital? Angels have 2 or 3 high upside prospects they probably don’t want to part with and after they there isn’t a lot of depth or players other GMs would want.
99 Captain Judge
@Tatsumaki- Freeland or Marquez? How bout the Halo’s putting their big boy pants on for once, and acquiring both of them?
Colorado Red
BIg difference between the two.
German going to cost an arm and a leg.
None of this tack on negative players to get the cost down.
Yankee Clipper
If it’s an available pitcher this offseason, and he’s not a broken Reclamation project, he’s obviously (italics) going to the Padres!
They will have a nine-man starting rotation this season, apparently.
angels1961
Albert also is not getting younger
Ronk325
It will be interesting to see if Bridich is allowed to kick off a full scale rebuild since he seems likely to be fired at some point over the next year
17dizzy
The Cardinals John Mozeliak added Goldschmidt 3 years ago. Other than that, before the Arenaldo trade, the last impact player he’d signed was Carlos Beltran in 2013.
DarkSide830
imo id prefer Senz. seems to be just scratching the surface of his potential, may be cheaper, and might cost less.
wastingtroutsprime
Here we go, Brandon Marsh and Jo Adell with Justin Upton and money and the Angels get German Marquez and Charlie Blackmon, imagine those 2 Adell and Marsh in coors revitalizing that franchise? Wow 40 homers each every year and Upton bounce back ? Wow
neurogame
Unfortunately, more years of suffering for Rockies fans.
How can Story agree to a new contract when he’s seen how Arenado’s time ended?
Right now, the franchise is dangling their feet in the pool while wearing arm floaties whereas the Dodgers and Padres are swimming in the deep end. So sad.
bravesfan
Clever analogy, painful but true. Look, clearly story would sign an extension if the Rockies offered him the right about. Like most of us, he prob loves money and loves baseball, so being on a bad team isn’t the end of the world. But I think you’re right, I think the moves that happened would lead me (him) to test the open market. Someone is likely gonna offer more than the Rockies, so he’s likely gone next year. It will be interesting to see how he does as more and more bats disappear to protect him in the lineup. Freddie freeman did much better with protection in the lineup… story might drop off a bit… who knows. Might hurt his value and he might feel inclined to extend rather than test the market
JoeBrady
Arenado got a humongous contract, had a horrible year, and then got traded to a contender. That’s exactly what Story should be looking for.
As far as dipping their feet in the pool, SD & LA have a huge amount of present talent and minor league talent Rox have none of that. Right now, the Rox shouldn’t even allowed near the pool.
whitebeard
MLB trade value stimulator has Marquez at +$91.7M… Whoa boy that would be a lot in prospects. Story at +$33.7M. There’s a lot of value in a rebuild there. Holding Rodgers likely has more value if he turns into anything like he was expected to be.
Michaelchavez22
So the Rockies want peanuts in return for Marquez? If it’s based on what the Rays got for Snell, that’s what they’ll get.
JoeBrady
IMO, TB did great in that trade.
iml12
There is no reason the Rockies shouldn’t have one of the best farms in baseball by 2022. They have no chance of competing with the padres or dodgers for the foreseeable future. Once you trade Arenado there is absolutely no reason not to gut this thing down to the studs.
CNichols
The problem with this is their farm is currently near the worst in the league, so they have a long ways to go.
Zach Veen is really the only top 100/elite type prospect COL has, but for comparison’s sake SD has like 7 of top 100 type guys. AZ and SF’s farms are in much better shape too. Not saying COL couldn’t turn it around, but it’s a bleak position to start from
iml12
They have a lot of valuable pieces on the current roster and some high draft picks coming the next two years. Not saying they will be contending anytime soon but they should be able to revamp that farm quickly.
JoeBrady

Once you trade Arenado there is absolutely no reason not to gut this thing down to the studs.
=========================================================
First sensible thing I’ve read so far. I don’t care if some teams tanks, and some teams go all in. But the one thing you can’t do, imo, is go halfway in either direction.
bot
Is it ? The arenado trade is one of worst in league history of the players listed is all that’s involved. How can u possible think after that- the management in Denver are competent enough to get any sort of value in next trade.
Good GMs should be all over Denver. Cleaning out their remaining assets for pennies on the dollar
iml12
We haven’t seen the full details of the trade just speculation. Arendado at 33 million a year is already dead weight. It’s getting out of the contract while there is still a chance.
CNichols
Clearing the salary is one thing, reinforcing the farm is another. If you’re good with the Arenado trade because they cleared money off the books then that’s your opinion, but they’re not bringing blue chip prospects back for him.
I think the whole point of this article is basically that Marquez is the only major trade asset. Story is an expensive rental, Blackmon’s contract and D are not good. Freeland and Senzatela would likely fetch a pretty mediocre return.
So when it comes down to it, how are they going to turn their farm from a bottom 5 farm team into a top 5 farm team? They just don’t have enough assets to trade off to obtain top prospects back. High draft picks will help some but that’s not going to get them all the way there
iml12
Marquez, Gray, story, tapia, McMahon, Freeland, sentzela, Givens, tapia and maybe even Blackmon all seem like viable trade options. Throw in a top 10 pick in this years draft and probably a top 5 next year they could absolutely load their farm in short order.
Mick10
Why the hell would they trade Zac Veen if they are rebuilding?

Nope I don’t think the Angels will trade Adell.
Colorado Red
Don’t this the Rox consider it with Adell.
Not trading a Stud like German for a bunch on nice, but not great players.
This is still probably not enough. have to Though in Sandavol to make it work.
He is not cheap.
bravesiowafan
For the millionth time adel isn’t getting traded.
HalosHeavenJJ
Probably. Then there goes any future cost controlled production outside of Marsh for the near future.
angelsfan4life
The Rockies would probably want a package of, Yan, Rodriguez, Jackson, Adell and Marsh. Rodriguez has the best pure stuff as a pitcher in the Angels farm system. Yan is probably still two years away. Same with Jackson. Adell and Marsh could start for the Rockies this year. The Angels could take Blackmon and his contract to trade less to get Marquez.

Rangers29
We were joking the other night about the Arenado trade over on MLBTR, and we said that if Bridich was that drunk then we should offer him Anderson Tejeda for German lmao.
Seriously, I would looove Marquez, but it would come at a price. What about this:
Rox get: Maximo Acosta (that hurts to say), Cole Winn, Kolby Allard, and Marcus Smith
Rangers get: German Marquez
This hurts to say because Acosta is a future number 1 prospect in baseball, but you gotta give to recieve and since he isn’t #1 right now then that wouldn’t be enough… Just to put it into perspective, scouts say that he is a better version of Gleyber Torres.
SoCalADRL
Why would the Rangers do that? They’re still a few years away from competing
terry g
No reason for the Rangers to do that. They’re not even close to contending yet.
Rangers29
Well then watch out. In 22′ (barring a lockout) the Rangers will be in the WC hunt at least. Give me Marquez through 23′ then a few free agent pitchers next off-season and we’re set for a really nice push. It might not seem like that, but just watch out.
iml12
Rangers still have a lot of holes in that lineup and pitching staff and they aren’t exactly sitting on the Rays farm. I cant imagine Marquez wouldnt net multiple top 100 guys or at least one top 25. He has to have as much value as Snell.
Rangers29
And Nolan was expected to net at least one of the Cards’ top 5 prospects (I would gladly eat my works if that happened though). This is the Rockies we’re talking about.
iml12
Not sure that’s true. The cardinals are taking on 150 million and we still haven’t seen the haul. Marquez has massive surplus value for the next 4 years. And again the rangers pitching staff and lineup isn’t good.
Rangers29
The Rangers lineup isn’t good right at this very second, but I’m not talking about right now. Look to 2022. Huff and Jung will have came up the previous season for varying periods of time, so they’ll be in the starting lineup come 22′. Here’s the lineup with them in it (this could very well change with a Gallo trade as well, but here’s the lineup with Gallo in it):
Taveras CF
Lowe 1B
Gallo RF
Huff C
Dahl LF
Jung 3B
Guzzy or Calhoun DH
Solak 2B
IKF SS
That is scary. The Rangers have a certain knack for formulating a good bullpen each season, so adding this (no new additions) offense to it would leave only the starting pitching as a need.
That’s where the Marquez trade comes in. He’s cheap, controllable, and would be a true ace to add to the staff. Definitely in the WC hunt if this were to be the case.
Cap & Crunch
Lineup has good potential down the road but usually 9/10 times ya gotta take your lumps for a year in this Biz-
Id say 23 would be more realistic – Books clean up real nice for that year as well
its_happening
That lineup scares nobody. Texas is far behind in depth and they don’t have enough talent at the top. They should be dealing Gallo first chance they get. Cut Odor loose. Team will be ready to compete in 2023 or 2024.
sfes
I dont mean to sound like a dick, especially since i appreciate that you root for my Mets, but that lineup is bad at best.
1984wasntamanual
The rangers are bad. The moves you constantly propose sound like the mistakes the Phillies made before their team was actually ready to compete.
iml12
The Rangers are in a blow it up spot. I think the pirates are in a better position and they are currently fielding a double A team. They are going to have one of the worst offenses and pitching staffs in the mlb next year and beyond. They should be stockpiling top 3 draft picks and trading everything not nailed down which isn’t much. When Andrus and odor contracts are up the farm and future team should be looking a lot better. Jung and Huff aren’t even going to move the needle.
802Ghost
I don’t recognize anyone on that lineup except Gallo.
Chief Two Hands
Don’t look now….but I think Rangers29 may be on the crack cocaine meth heroin….

TexasSh!tposter29,
You’re delusional. Your beloved Rangers haven’t won a World Series championship in their 48 years in Texas; and at this rate, it won’t happen in the next 48. Just be patient.

I think that would be a great move. I wouldn’t even mind seeing what they want for Gray this year to give our young pitchers a little more development time.
Colorado Red
not even remotely close. Have to add Jung, Huff, and others.
Looked at baseball trade values dot com.
This trade is way way off. Asosta looks like a nice player, maybe a starter. but nothing more.

Marquez is the only good player acquired by Bridich in 6 years. Worst GM in baseball.
Assdribble_Cabrera
“Charlie Blackmon’s bat wasn’t quite as potent in 2020 as in past years…” huh? Maybe the power was not what it was as the previous several years, but last year was a weird year for everyone.
theodore glass
Pretty sure teams would love to get Blackmon. Anyway trade Story, Blackmon and Marquez. Keep Freeland and Senzatela to rebuild value for now.
JamesW26
Realistically, I think the Rockies would have to eat some money on that contract, too. Not sure how much, but it wouldn’t be an insignificant amount.
larry48
No team will trade for Blackmon, bad contract and he’s old and poor defensively.
Ted
Blackmon’s 2020 split are goofy. He’s always hit lefties relatively well, and he did even better than usual in 2020. He also hit better on the ROAD than he did in 2019 or his career average. He just couldn’t hit at home.
Now, 2020 splits are a small sample size, but the same logic applies when criticizing his 2020 overall numbers. I wouldn’t mind having him on my team. His contract isn’t *that* terrible.
troll
st louis shold have told colorado to keep the $50mil and include story and marquez
sidewinder11
What use does St Louis have for Story? I don’t think he’d be that much of an upgrade over De Jong and that would end up costing them a lot more in prospects.
Colorado Red
Rockies say NO WAY.
If you look at Baseball trade values the actual trade was close
Story is worth a lot, and German worth a ton.
theodore glass
I would like Blackmon in Boston to play LF. But too bad it won’t happen.

Are you sure, at a price that could be over 2o million average each of the next 3 years? At his age?
Bruin1012
Yankees, Blue Jays, Mets, Dodgers, Rays, Atlanta, along with numerous other teams should get in on the bidding for Marquez if the Rockies make him available. They should be able to get a Kings ransom especially with all the teams that should be in on this guy. The Rockies would be silly to not at least try and see what they could pull for him. It’s going to take a lot though it’s going to hurt to get him.

aussiegiants53
Let the trade proposals begin, surely the Angels need to be in on Marquez and I’m sure many other teams too, Rockies really need a full rebuild, now is literally the best time to do it, let the Padres abs Dodgers duke it out, Giants and Dbacks not far behind, sell the team, be bad, get the draft picks and build up
leftcoast11 - pyramidsuccess
Story,Blackman & Marquez 4 Jose Alberto Rivera,Oliver Ortega,Chris Rodriguez,Aaron Hernandez,Orlando Ortega,Packy Naughton,Jahmai Jones,Rengifo,& Taylor Ward..Thats 6 pitchers ,all top 25-30 prospects to restock their arms race.Jones,Rengifo,& Ward could help Rox while they rebuild on the cheap.I’ve seen the pitching numbers under contract in the minors.IMO honestly,I see very little difference from ranking 6-25 pitchers. We have some real nice youngsters with real size and more athletic.the last 3 drafts we signed a bunch of pitchers.Bottom line I believe the Angels could trade any pitcher except Detmers,Yan & the kid Kochancowicz. All Lh

Toronto Blue Jays need to be on Marquez.

I’m not too sure how freeland did last year.
Yankee Clipper
Speaking of Freeland, what happened to him? He had a great year and then seemingly fell off a cliff and was never able to come back fully. He always intrigued me as a guy who may be able to put it together with a fresh start.
its_happening
It is hard to remain consistent in Colorado, and even harder psychologically IMO. I believe he’s a Colorado-native and might be willing to stay, but I think he can be a darn good pitcher if he got away from Coors.
bluejaysfan
I’d love the the Jays to be in on Marquez or John Gray. Gray only has a year left and shouldn’t cost too much. You can always look at a FA pitcher next year to fill in the holes. Marquez would eliminate the need to go big next year but he would also cost some future pieces.
PiratesFan1981
Toronto has been in on everyone that can hold a bat and ball. Marquez is probably on Toronto’s speed dial as we speak.

Away from Coors? Marquez could push Ryu to 2 by the end of the season if the Jays got him

Marquez might be worth giving up Howard and Stott for in Philly, plus Vinny, Knapp and/or Kingery. I’d even take Desmond’s money, but only if I’m keeping Stott in the deal.

Blackmon and Story would be excellent option for the Braves in my opinion, although Blackmon doesn’t have the pop we really need, but there is enough value in getting on base and consistent contact (can remotely say Ender has contact, pop, or OBP). Idk if the Braves could get both, but one of them would be really good. I don’t want to get rid of Riley personally, but his pop in Colorado could make him look legendary.
Fake GM time (don’t be a jerk, just say too much or too little and put out a counter). And I full well know this will never happen… just fun:
Story & Blackmon plus a little cash or ptbnl to the Braves for Waters, Riley, Muller, Ender. We’d ultimately eat most of those contracts but shedding Ender and getting a little cash would help and hence the prospect pedigree I put in the deal. (Alternative suggestion would be substitute Wright for Muller). Waters and Riley profile well in Colorado, Muller kinda fits there pitching profile. Doesn’t crush the Braves entirely..
carlos15
The Rockies need to be moved to another location. Their offensive numbers are always inflated and no one wants to pitch there. It’s impossible to build a team when any prospect or top starter doesn’t want to go there to get lit up and no one believes your position players are as good as their numbers say they are. The team needs to go somewhere else.
Dock_Elvis
They aren’t moving. Same thing has been said since atleast the 60s when Whitey Herzog managed the Denver Bears. The Rockies have made one world series in 16 fewer seasons than the Seattle Mariners. It’s POSSIBLE to win in Denver…but you can’t show the ownership/front office incompetence have displayed. the Rockies have played in as many WS as the Cubs have in the last 113 seasons. Since 2007 they’ve actually shown an uptick and been just about as cyclical as most other teams. Have to keep the ball down and high K rates at Coors. Ubaldo Jimenez was almost a perfect pitcher there. The offense will ALWAYS play up. It’s not just home runs. Coors Field is MASSIVE…the gaps are huge.
bobtillman
3 million fans a year, and the Rox are a train wreck on its way to a dumpster fire. What kind of excuse? Absolutely none. And they fired Dan O’Dowd? (I know, he know; he goofed some; who doesn’t. You’d crash the site with Theo’s goofs).
Potentially great franchise flushed right down the toilet.
Dock_Elvis
The saving grace here is that IF competency ever happens…there’s going to be money to invest in the team. New income project across the street. There’s no reason not to win in Denver outside of the weird element the elevation creates…which can be mitigated.
AHH-Rox
I think the most likely Rockies pitcher to get traded is Jon Gray, because they probably have delusions of competing before Marquez’s contract is up. Gray is a one-year rental, but is affordable and could be a #4 starter for somebody in need. Should bring back one good but not elite prospect.
Astros2017&22Champs
The rockies might honestly face a more daunting rebuild then the orioles because of their division. The padres and dodgers are contenders for the foreseeable future. The giants and dbacks are well into their own rebuilds. Dbacks have the superior farm but the giants have the $ to buy anyone they want in the next few free agent classes. The rockies are in trouble and it sux for their loyal fans

they’ll just spend their money at the dispensary instead

They should qualify for medical atleast and save the extra tax money.

Lol. The Rockies just traded their top chip in a rebuild for peanuts and as a Rockies fan I don’t have much faith they wouldn’t do it again.
Dock_Elvis
Yeah, true…not a real bright side unless they use that extra 149M well they saved on Arenado. I think Montfort is suspicions that Colorado will allow fans in the stands…plenty of stuff to do there and not watch the Rockies suck on TV…also probably suspicious of a looming strike. He’s boosting his ledger. Smart business move…bad baseball move.

Lol. The Rockies just traded their top chip
=======================================================
He is not only NOT their top trade chip, he isn’t a trade chip whatsoever. He is a negative value player. If I were the Rox, as soon as he started complaining, I’d have put him on waivers. When no one claimed him, it would’ve been a major STFU.
Natitude95
Blackmon to the Nats makes a lot of sense, especially if there is a universal DH this year. Plug him in left field and have him share DH days with Schwarber, Bell, Zim
eddiemathews
Given that
– the Rockies will not contend this season (or in the forseeable future)
– they probably can’t affect their attendance more negatively than they already have, if there even is attendance
= Story won’t be with the team in 2022, one way or the other
– if they wait they get just a pick for him, if they give him a qualifying offer
– something is better than nothing
– several lottery tickets is slightly better than nothing
shouldn’t they trade him?
JoeBrady
They should trade everyone that won’t be here in 2023 and beyond.
Dock_Elvis
Yes. The team has killed PR for the foreseeable future. No guarantee the crowds are let in and a potential strike coming up. From a business standpoint I understand clearing 149M from the books. I think Montfort is hedging on the Rockies being fairly irreverent in person and on TV because of Covid hangover. What would you do if you lived in Colorado during the summer and had been locked up in your house or eating drive-thru. People are rediscovering things other than Rockies baseball…add a looming strike. It’s not boom time and Montfort is selling off. They already took a hit in the books in 2020. It’s just a bad time to try and build franchise value…he’s taking the liquid cash.
joefriday1948
Finally Colton Welker can contend for the Triple Crown and MVP.
cwsOverhaul
Quintana is somewhat of a trade comp return model when he had 3.5yrs of low cost control at the time he was pitching very well. Netted the seller Eloy and Cease. 2 undeniable top tier prospects. Fans who want Marquez need not propose their overhyped farmhands or expendable parts. The prospect capital is going to hurt.
Sideline Redwine
Marquez may be younger, cheaper, and had fewer injuries than Blake Snell, but he is not as *good* as Snell. Comparing the two is laughable. Marquez would not elicit a similar return because frankly he is nowhere near Snell in ability or production. Stop w these ridiculous comps.
Astros2017&22Champs
You might be right but snell pitched half his games at the trop behind stellar outfield defense. Marquez pitches in a park thats been a career killer for every pitcher in rockies history.
Dock_Elvis
Ubaldo Jimenez pitched very well at Coors. In not sure I’d blame fading on the park..that happens in a career. Jeff Francis was solid as well.
KamKid
Marquez looks well on his way to outproducing Snell over the remainders of their contracts. I’m thinking they are different pitchers but of similar value and Marquez has an extra year of control at a similar price point per year. The difference between Marquez and Snell is that while both have great stuff, Marquez isn’t afraid to attack hitters with his and thus can pitch into the 6th and even 7th inning once in a while without running his pitch counts up before the 5th. Snell will have a better ERA and more strikeouts, but Marquez can get the ball into the hands of the backend guys whereas with Snell you are relying on having a deep bullpen because you are going to use 4 relievers on days he starts. As I said, not better or worse, just different. You probably prefer Snell in a playoff game but you might prefer Marquez in the dog days of summer. Depends how the rest of your staff is constructed.

Well.. if you are looking at top LHP from 2017-2020… there are a TOP 5 in cumulative BWAR/IP thrown (at least 100IP) in those 4 years.. #1 Chris Sale, #2 Mike Minor, #3 Patrick Corbin, #4 Kershaw .. #5 Kyle Freeland ! Yes 2019 was poor.. but if you only knew all the teams that are likely calling on the Rockies top 5 LHP in all of baseball starter …

Bring CarGo back too. While his bat decreased, nobody in their right mind tried to leg out past 1st base when they hit the ball in his corner. The guy had an arm.

Here’s a new way Rockies ownership can make some extra cash… pitch Hollywood a “Major League” reboot and allow them to use the Rockies and Coors Field as the theme of the movie. Except in the end, the Rockies still stink and get moved to Boise.
