The Phillies, Reds, and Jays (among others) are those taking a look at Andrelton Simmons, per MLB Insider Jon Heyman (via Twitter). The Phillies and Reds are natural fits for the former Angel, given their openings at shortstop. The Blue Jays have notably explored many avenues for improvement. In the case of Simmons, it would mean raising their defensive efficiency in the infield, presumably by installing Simmons at short and letting Bo Bichette slide to third, where he would no doubt be a plus defender. At present, it would be surprising if the Phillies and Reds aren’t able to nab a shortstop apiece from the group of Simmons, Marcus Semien, and Didi Gregorius, given their clear need compared to other teams around the league. Considering the group of shortstops that could become free agents next year, teams could be trying to limit their long-term commitments at the position, though that’s not as likely as negotiations simply hanging up because of total dollars as teams hunt value deals.
- Speaking of free agents to be, the Rockies’ Trevor Story may be the one of the bunch most likely to hit free agency next summer. At present, Colorado remains unmoved in their position to neither trade nor extend their star shortstop, per ESPN’s Buster Olney (via Twitter). At times this winter, they have been open to the idea of moving Story, but the most likely outcome still appears to be Story playing out the 2021 season in Coors Field and then hitting the open market.
- The Twins may be one of the mystery teams taking a look at Simmons. When asked by Darren Wolfson of SKOR North (video link) if Jorge Polanco would be their opening day shortstop, Twins GM Thad Levin said, “I think we look at our team and say Byron Buxton’s our opening day centerfielder, and Josh Donaldson’s our opening day third baseman – almost everyone else on our team has defensive flexibility. We view that as a huge boon to our team.” Wolfson notes that the Twins know the asking prices for free agent shortstops Simmons and Marcus Semien are keeping an eye on it.
- To be clear, Levine in no way implied that Polanco would not be a big part of their team in 2021, only that they consider the defensive malleability of the current roster as one of their advantages – both in the market and on the ball field. By DRS, OAA, and UZR, Polanco has measured as a subpar defender at shortstop throughout his career, and the Twins may see value in moving him to second in order to upgrade the infield defense on the whole. More broadly, the Twins appear keen on making the “best” free agent deal they can find, regardless of position. If flexibility really is central to the Twins’ philosophy, that could help explain any reticence they might have about locking Nelson Cruz into the designated hitter spot . That said, it’s hard to imagine finding any player better at their position than Cruz was as their DH the last two seasons (163 wRC+).
VonPurpleHayes
Shortstop, Realmuto and some pitching and the Phillies will be right in the thick of it…I know that’s asking a lot. A man can dream.
Cambio
I could see Paxton as a target for the Phillies; he could be their 3 starter as they hope for a bounce back. Simmons at SS is probably the cheapest option. The last piece would be Realmuto. I dont think the Phil’s have money for those three though.
Mccafe
Simmons will go to the Jays – they have too much money Nye to spend – or they’ll drive up the price and you’ll only afford JTR… Paxson too goes to Toronto… Fact
VonPurpleHayes
I mean the SS market is strong. Teams have a lot of options there. The Phillies will sign someone. As for SP, I think Anibal Sanchez will be the Phillies answer. Which doesn’t sound great.
MrMet33
More than some starting pitching plus still need at least two more RP arms.
DarkSide830
we only really “need” one SP. obviously two backend guys would be nice but the options on the market are lacking.
thekid9
Thank you Johnny Superscout
bucketbrew35
My dream offseason would be Realmuto, Simmons and Bradley or Kiermaier. That would be the strongest up the middle defense in all of baseball.
eagles1191
That’s not asking a lot. I think after JT, resign Didi, add Colome (closer), add a depth SP. To many unknowns in the starting rotation at 4&5. Howard is going to be on a pitch count, we know what Velasquez is.
As it gets closer to spring training, free agents will be more open to 1yr deals. Hamels, Paxton, T. Walker) would be great adds.
its_happening
Jays making an executive decision to make Bo a 3B for the rest of his career? A one year deal for Andrelton or 3-4 for Didi?
dman07
I don’t see Bo at 3rd at all. Wasn’t his range and arm strength the reason people thought we’d get DJL and slide Cavan to third. Bo would have been moved to 2B in that scenario.
He’s played 75 games at SS in his career. He can still develop there. I say leave him there all of 2021.
smuzqwpdmx
Bo was a solidly average SS in 2020. And I just don’t buy the notion that, as the article claims, he would “no doubt” be immediately great at 3B when he’s never played there, as if it’s automatically an easy transition. Signing Simmons isn’t necessarily even a net positive on defense if Bo has trouble adjusting to new angles, and it’s easy to find third basemen with a better bat than Simmons…. so I don’t like the idea.
Give me Bryant instead.
jabronieramone
Having watched Simmons the last two years he’s a shell of his former self after the ankle injury. Plus once he was told by Angels they wouldn’t be offering him a new contract he went home early even though the team had an outside shot at getting a WC. Buyer beware
its_happening
I don’t see Bo at 3B either. You catch my drift; this doesn’t make much sense unless it’s to prep for next year to go all in for a SS.
123redsox
DJ would be playing second, biggio third and bichette woild stay at short in the scenario
Mccafe
The Jays have already announced that Bo will slide to 3rd, if tgey sign shortstop like Simmons. Biggio will play 2nd… Fsct
EastCoastCanuck
@mccafe. I have not seen this anywhere.
Do we need Facebook to fact check this?
Vizionaire
i hope he doesn’t go to the jays. he may injure himself often playing on that turf.
smuzqwpdmx
It’s a dirt infield. But perhaps the goal of the signing would be that Bichette and Simmons can somehow coordinate to have their injuries at different times, and thus combine to play one full season of shortstop.
Vizionaire
simmons covers dirt to outfield. if you have seen him playing you would know.
Dutch Vander Linde
They’re forgetting all about Vlady Jr. He wants to play 3B again and was playing there in the winter league.
dman07
4 errors in 7 games…
BobGibsonFan
Wait… using errors to evaluate defense? I was scolded for that. Isn’t there some spinny stat we use?
stormie
I don’t see Didi getting more than a 2-year deal from anyone, for good reason. He had a nice bounceback with the bat last year in terms of end results, but his batted ball profile was very unconvincing. He had one of the worst exit velocities in baseball last year and his xwOBA was only .298, which for context, was worse than Travis Shaw and Joe Panik. His defense and baserunning are also on the downswing.
As for Bo, I wouldn’t assume the Jays have any plans to move him off short just because they are looking at other infielders/shortstops.
its_happening
Forget exit velocity. It’s bullcrap. Didi playing in the AL East he’ll be fine hitting-wise batting in the 7-hole. Didi is a good hitter regardless of how fast the ball travels off the bat.
DarkSide830
if he can stay healthy and wolnt cost terribly much I like Simba for Philly. not the bat Didi has but we could use the defensive upgrade. effectively may be more valuable to us for that reason.
Gothamcityriddler
Maybe if the Rockies FO wasn’t constantly blazing they’d have an inkling of a clue on how to run an MLB team. They’re pretty hip & far out dude.
Ahahahaha!
(?)
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, I sometimes wonder with Colorado. And it’s not as if they don’t have the team talent to have performed in a Rays-like manner (not WS bound).
Granted, they do need to improve certain areas, but you look at their team for the past four years and they’ve had several great players, including the best 3b in all MLB and a top 3 perennial SS. They could pull in some talent if they would stop white-knuckling the Story jerseys.
Netflix&RichHill
Rendon, Bregman, Jose Ramirez all over Arenado
Yankee Clipper
No way Jose Ramirez has been better than Nolan Arenado at 3b over. Neither Rendon or Bergman have the defensive pedigree Arenado has. The guy’s won 2(?) platinum gloves and he’s not too shabby with the ol’ stick either. He’s been consistently great at third. I don’t see how it’s even close.
vtadave
As a Dodgers fan, I’d easily take Ramirez over Arenado, especially factoring in contracts. Of course it would depend on trade return for each.
Yankee Clipper
vtdave: Yes I completely agree with your point there and I may choose him first at this juncture, but to say he’s been a better 3b over the past several years is inaccurate, imho. And that’s the only point I was making above. Rox have immense talent, and they cannot put it together. Then they let it just simmer and die out.
Using a philosophy of many other teams with small-market farm-centric ideologies, they could’ve capitalized on some major talent at its peak, ie, Marquez (assuming they don’t trade) Kyle Freeland, Story, Gray etc.. They have a great pool of talent from which they could generate some really nice returns, which would pay dividends for years to come.
trout27
In Colorado, it is always about the pitching. It is nearly impossible to attract FA pitchers to Denver. The Onus is on the Rockies to draft and develop their own pitching.
Dock_Elvis
They can never figure out how to get good information to their staff on how to pitch in Coors. It’s an organizational flaw they have almost always dealt with. Always been a very old school front office. That helps when drafting pitching talent…the Rockies can develop players…they just cant seem to help them at the MLB level. They just develop and then try to luck out while their players are primed. Throw in natural occurrences like injuries and it’s a tight rope. If I’m the Rockies I’m drafting pitcher after pitcher and putting any free agent money into bats. It’s just all gotta time right.
Guessing they figure the compensatory pick is worth more than dealing Story. That tells you how far off they really feel they are.
astros2017
I get if a team is trying to sign a guy long term risking not trading him
But you have no chance to win it this year
You aren’t trying to sign him
So just let him go for a comp pick?
Idiocy
DrDan75
I think that their plan might be to move Story as a rental at the trading deadline when the pennant races start to shake out.
Dock_Elvis
The Rockies arent going to come out and say they will deal Story at the deadline. It’s asking fans not to care. Rockies have always been disingenuous like that.
I would think he would demand value above what a compensatory pick would offer. He should nab a couple decent prospects.
13Morgs13
Simmons would be a major upgrade for the Phillies. I’m on board.
VonPurpleHayes
Simmons, Didi…I’d be thrilled with either.
609Collectibles
1. Semien 2. Didi for my money
brucebochyisthemarlboroman
You could literally put any of those 3 pictures on a dart board and throw it blindfolded I’d be happy with any of them. Honestly, I’d love to see absolutely anything out of South Philly at this point.
HalosHeavenJJ
With Simmons it all comes down to the ankle. When he’s driving with his lower half it makes all the difference in his swing. He’s a contact guy.
The defense is incredible and I do like that idea in Toronto.
Rangers29
The Rox are such a poorly run franchise… They’ll sit there and lie to their fans blatantly about being a “94 win team” whenever they don’t even try to improve. Not doing something with Story would be yet another mistake by Bridich. Either you extend him or you trade him, and for the Rox they need to trade him. The only reason you ever let a good player walk in free agency is if you are either 1.) A competitive team needing that player’s services in the postseason, or 2.) You expect that player to retire. Any other reason is a mistake. You sign extensions earlier, and you make trades earlier well. That FO needs to protested lmao.
atmospherechanger
Unfortunately, the common mindset of the game says if you aren’t a candidate to end up in the WS, you have to tank. It’s all or it’s nothing.
Tankers can expect 5-7 yrs of pain, hoping their draft/develop plans bring fruit. If not, start the process again. Mgmt. promotes the prospect route to dull the fan’s pain.
Fans rightfully protest that process because it’s not the way a professional organization is to be run.
The Rox went through an extended rebuild that didn’t produce the expected success, but have refused to gut & start over again. They’ve probably over valued prospects & missed on some FA’s, but they’ve always tried to compete with a higher than middling payroll & paid fan favorites.
While initially lagging the league in using data, they seem to be catching up. Seems odd that they wouldn’t get more appreciation for refusing to fall into the same trap that gets the most criticism on here…not trying to win.
YourDreamGM
Rockies are a mess. Sign bad contracts. Give out bad extensions. Rebuilds aren’t that bad if done right. Pittsburgh just stunk last year, that wasn’t tanking. This year is tanking. 2022 all young players. 2023 a lot more top prospects will be ready and they should be at least 500. With limited fans 2020 2021 was a great time to rebuild.
CNichols
@tmthegm What have the Rockies done this offseason that shows they’re “trying to win”? They’re so delusional about their team that they think it’s competitive enough that they can stand pat. That’s just a different form of “not trying to win”. Their front office is so bad it doesn’t even understand what trying to win looks like.
The Rockies situation is way worse in my option than what the Pirates are doing because at least the Pirates are actually making moves in order to set themselves up to win at some future date. The Rockies on the other hand are trotting out a sub .500 team, saying they think it’s a 94 win team, and then just hoping that it somehow magically beats LAD and SD who have actually invested in fielding good ballclubs.
I think I remember seeing in a Fangraphs article that for the middle of the 2010s the Rockies had spent $250M on players in free agency and when combined together they produced negative WAR. Essentially they spent $250M to get negative value, or to make themselves worse. You can call all of those terrible contracts “trying to win”, but it’s really more like wasting money and being inept.
JoeBrady
They made some mind-numbing signings. They signed Desmond for $70M, and literally had no place to play him. They had Story at SS, and 3 OFs. So they had a player with an OPS+ of 82, rotating between 1st & LF.
They had a pretty decent prospect in David Dahl, but instead of starting him, they signed Parra for ~ $30M.
Dock_Elvis
It’s largely because Monfort doesnt understand baseball and uses it as he pleases.
Dock_Elvis
Tmthegm- Well, with me it’s only based around the flawed logic that eating his trade value for a compensation pick is wise. I don’t believe for a second if they are out of the race that they won’t deal him at the deadline. At that point the paid fans will have a much greater appreciation of team building long term.
I just feel that a trade of Story brings back better prospects that are closer to the majors than the compensation pick.
I see no point in hanging on to him in September when when the fans are paying less attention. If he’s a paid fan favorite then toss the money at him and sign him. A great power hitting SS has amazing value for a team that is going to probably not totally strip down.
My guess is they need to also see just how good the Dodgers and Padres are. They night not stand much chance for a few years here. Arizona is also well ahead of them on prospect development. I think in dealing Arenado and Story I’d be trying to put myself where Arizona is on a timeline.
Loling @ you
I’d say of all shortstop available next summer story intrigues me the most. I don’t think he will command anything over 200 million. He will be 29 and is coming off modest production from a hitters park. Seager and lindor will be locks for over 300 million based on age and production with Correa somewhere in between due to cheating and being injury prone (back issues) I think story could be a real get for a team not looking to spend top dollar and still get great production
Simodine
I’d expect story to be near 200m. 6-8 years at 25m per. Puts him in the 150-200m range. My guess he signs with the Giants.
Lindor mets
Seager dodgers
Giants story
Baez Cubs
Correa mariners
Be interesting to see if any of the teams that have been rebuilding for a bit decide this is where they start to buy again.
Tigers
Orioles
Marlins
Royals
Mariners
Giants
Astros could be in play as well.
123redsox
Tigers have castro who looks good and is 23 at short. Marlins have Chisholm . Crawford broke out in the short season for Seattle. And the royals have mondesi who’s one of the better position players at short. And Bobby witt waiting in the wings…. so those teams aren’t really candidates
stymeedone
Castro is lacking defensively at SS. Castro could easily move to 2B. Miggy will be coming off the books. Detroit could easily be in the mix depending on what Paredes, Harold Castro, and Goodrum do this year.
Rangers29
Story is going to the Rangers.
Lmao, it’s fun to say stuff like that so matter-of-fact. In fact, I think we instead go after an ace next off season. Syndergaard?
thunderroad19
Don’t look for KC to be buying in on a SS anytime soon. If Mondesi doesn’t cut it they have Bobby Witt, Jr knocking at the door and several other decent prospects at the position.
DrDan75
Signing with the Giants would move Story from the best hitters park in the league to probably the best pitchers’ park in baseball.
609Collectibles
Barry Bonds hit like 400 homeruns there and might not get in the HOF
Yankee Clipper
I could see him going to the Bronx and making double plays again with ex-teammate DJL as well.
awf111969
Bo knows third base
ilikebaseball 2
Why does it seem like the Jays don’t believe in Bichette as their SS. First Lindor now Simmons.
smuzqwpdmx
Maybe it’s psychology. Bichette has always been driven to prove he can play shortstop when everybody said he couldn’t, so they drop rumors to keep him motivated.
oldmansteve
If only real life was like a sports movie.
609Collectibles
That’s deep man
its_happening
A better question is are they seriously considering him at 3B?
123redsox
Because they can upgrade there and move Bo to a position that they feel he would help them more at right now.
EastCoastCanuck
I see Bichette moving off SS if Lindor was a Jay. Not for this years SS Free Agents.
I think the Jays are checking with the current FA SS if they would consider playing 2B and/or 3B with the occasional SS start.
Gregorius’ Left handed bat would balance out the Jays lineup nicely. Biggio and Tellez are the only current LH bats.
If these SS are not interested in splitting time away from their prime position, I can see the Jays turning to Wong and moving Biggio to 3B.
Still I’d like to see this Cubs trade happen above any of these scenarios.
its_happening
DiDi on a 3-yr plus option would not be bad.
Yankee Clipper
Are they really willing to move Vlad to 1B, given he’s lost about 30 lbs and has been reported to be playing 3B well again?
Seems like a significant demotivating factor for your top young talent, no? You all think they could consider trading Bichette?
EastCoastCanuck
@Yankee Clipper
After playing 3B in 2019 Vlad was rated worst in the league at that position.
In ‘20 his lack of condition, expanded playoffs (needing to be competitive) moved him to 1B.
IF Vlad could be league average at defence at 3B and start mashing like projected, their line up makes sense right now. Vlad at 3B, Tellez at 1st, Randal RF and Teo at DH. However that’s a Big IF.
I believe the Jays competitive window arrived a couple years earlier than most expected.
Jays being linked to Lindor, Turner, Bryant, Simmons, Wong etc… this off season tells me Vlad is the Jays plans Z at 3B. He may get 20 games there, but not their main guy.
I’d be Shocked to see Bichette traded. They look at him as a future Franchise player. He was leading the league in hitting last year prior to an injuring, as small of a sample as that was.
Yankee Clipper
EastCoast: Makes a lot of sense, although I had forgotten he was the league’s worst at 3b! Yikes… I didn’t think they would trade Bichette but I’m obviously not as familiar with how they operate as you all. Plus, my son is a HUGE Jays fan (yeah, I dropped him).
jimmertee
Bo Bichette is an injury waiting to happen. His body cannot deal well with the explosiveness of MLB level baseball. I called it when he was in AA.
Bo will end up a below average player because of his injuries and he cannot play a good SS in the big leagues. He belongs at 2B, Period.
Vlad Jr will never be a good 3B. Forget about it. He doesn’t have the hands. He’ll make 2 great plays then boot the 3rd. He is a 1B DH in the major leagues.
The Jays are better with Springer but still need 2 starters, one elite and one very good, otherwise they are going no where. A real 3B would be good too.
EastCoastCanuck
@jimmy
I agree on your rotation and Vlad points. A true #2 addition and move Pearson to a #4 spot as I don’t think he’s built up to even reach 160 innings. They will have to monitor him closely. We don’t need another Aaron Sanchez situation.
A 68 game sample @SS (7@DH) between ‘19-‘20 for Bichette is far too soon to write him off there.
Following his metrics, he appeared to be hovering just above or below league average in defence at that position.
Let the kid play out a whole season at SS so the FO can have a better idea where he projects before the high class SS FA floods the market next off season. Get a stop gap this season at 3B or 2B. JMO.
jimmertee
My feeling is that Bichette might force himself off of SS. But you are correct, let see how he does.
i think Pearson can be an elite starter, but he doesn’t know how to pitch yet. He needs to be mentored and watched closely.
How about signing Aaron Sanchez as a lottery ticket?
8
What about didi. No mention of him at all this offseason till now. Phillies should be smart and bring him back.
Rsox
Phillies aren’t signing anyone else till the Realmuto drama is resolved
8
Realmuto is extremely overrated. They are extremely stupid to sign him.
VonPurpleHayes
@Dom I don’t think he’s overrated at all. He really is an amazing catcher. Overpaid on the other hand? Perhaps. He’s asking for a lot.
Yankee Clipper
Yikes…. it’s very difficult to overrate the #1 players at any position, especially when he’s recognized as such perennially….
Rsox
Sign Simmons to play SS, add a 1B (maybe bring Cron back or sign Moreland), move Sano to DH and the Twins become drastically better defensively
123redsox
Cron and moreland would make a quality platoon
thunderroad19
Twins are screwing up if they don’t go ahead and pay Cruz. They’re a good, not great team as it is and much worse without Cruz.
philsphan1979
I’d rather have gregorius over Simmons. But Didi is probably looking at a 2-3 year deal, opposed to Simmons 1 yr deal. Didi def proved his worth, so I’m not mad at him, but we need to make way for Stott at some point in 2022
DarkSide830
yeah Stott looks like a nice piece. if he isnt dealt I think he can help as a cheaper replacement then signing a SS a year.
Yankee Clipper
You have a couple guys at the cusp of the majors that could come up. They’re trying to balance that with their competitive window l, I’m sure.
EastCoastCanuck
I believe Biggio & Bichette could use a Full season at their position to have a better idea who they are defensively.
Same can be said for Martin & Groshans in the minors.
For this reason I believe Henriks & Bryant as a package are a great get. Jays need a #2 starter. Bryant needs a change of scene & to prove himself during his walk year. Huge upgrade over Travis Shaw and a one year stop gap for the Jays to figure out their young infield development/alignment.
stymeedone
I’m sure the Cubs will just hand over their top starter and their former MVP. What are the Jays proposing to give back. Let me guess, not Martin or Groshans.
EastCoastCanuck
Martin would be too high on the Jays chart. I can see Groshans as a possible piece. Jays have been said to have some of the deepest catching depth.
They have some pitching prospects as well. Milb did not have a season last year and the Jays used some AAA starters in their pen. Currently they have 4 MLB outfielders.
They have pieces they can use if only both sides can agree on values.
its_happening
Teoscar. Plus Thornton and maybe a young minor leaguer or two. Cubs then flip Teoscar at the deadline for prospects.
jimmertee
Bo Bichette is an injury waiting to happen. His body cannot deal well with the explosiveness of MLB level baseball. I called it when he was in AA.

Do I also need to copy and paste my rebuttal here? LoL
jimmertee
Yup
Rsox
Maikel Franco would be a huge uograde over Travis Shaw
Pax vobiscum
I’ll take Didi any day. He was a great fit last year and on a 2 year deal it will eliminate the need to rush Stott.
Balk
If story doesn’t get traded and locked down through an extension, I can see the Giants making a play for him next year.
Ronk325
The Phillies bringing Didi back makes too much sense to not happen. I’m guessing they’re just waiting till they (hopefully) resign JT to make any other moves but who knows
DarkSide830
the oversaturation of the SS market lent to this. I feel they are looking to get the best deal that can be had for either of Didi, Simba, or Semian.
Ronk325
Yeah that’s probably the reason but Didi being the only lefty of that group makes him the best fit for the Phillies very righty heavy lineup
Yankee Clipper
Being the only lefty makes him the best fit for other teams too though. Frankly, I’m really surprised he and the Yankees wrote each other off so quickly when he seemed like a natural fit for what we needed. Didi was great in NY and I hope you all do get him back. He’s a great player to have on your team and always seems to be a fan favorite
User 4245925809
Believe none of the 3 are going to hit the magic pot. Just too many available and really none are better than the other. 1y deal, multi year.. Both carry risks for them. Buyer’s market for sure to get a SS and smartest agents for these 3 will be the ones who don’t dither into ST, tho can almost guarantee one will and his guy will wind up the big loser.
Ronk325
No doubt these guys are at best looking at 2 year deals. My point was just that Didi is a logical fit for the Phillies and they would be foolish to not sign him
Indianfan
It’s about time for the Indians to start rumaging through the bottom of the barrel in an attempt to sign the FREE free agents. It happens every spring. If you can’t afford the real free agents, Dolan, sell the darned team to someone who can.
YourDreamGM
I’d like 2 of the 3 Pederson jbj Pillar. They are set everywhere else with maybe exception of 1b but have 2 young options to try there.
Yep it is
Why would anyone sign with the Reds unless out desperation. Same as the Twins. We are going to be as good as it takes to get swept in the first round. No Thanks
earmbrister
Why wouldn’t the FA SS’s want to sign with the Reds? There’s more supply than demand with shortstops. And there’s going to be a big free-agent SS class next off-season. So the “big three” SS FA’s are probably looking to get a two year deal in a depressed market so that they can cash him down the road. The Reds are contenders to win a very winnable NL Central. The Phillies are struggling to remain competitive and the Jays are in a very tough division. The Twins only seemingly have to worry about the White Sox in their division. I don’t see these guys looking to be a utility player, so there isn’t much competition for their services. Most of these teams will find a SS at a decent price.
Stingray16
At this point it is either Didi or Villar for the Reds.
Oddvark
The teams that really need shortstops — Reds, As, Phillies — don’t want to spend money this year. And the supply basically meets the demand. Especially with playable guys like Villar, Alberto, and Galvis still available, too. So offers are not meeting the players’ hopes and dreams.
Sure the Twins, Brewers, or Diamondbacks may decide they want to make an upgrade, or the Marlins, Tigers, Orioles, or Pirates might make an offer on a short-term contract with hopes of flipping the player at the trade deadline/next offseason. But none of those offers are really going to drive the prices up for Gregorius, Simmons, or Semien.
JoeBrady
Just imho, but the Phillies would be better off with Segura at SS, and focusing their remaining money on JTR, a low-end SP, and the BP.
ipuritani
Segura can’t play SS any more. I want JTR back but, all things considered (especially $$$), if they had to choose between DiDi & JTR I’d prefer DiDi.
jimmertee
For the Jays. Didi for 3B or closer if he can throw strikes. He has a cannon for an arm. His days at SS are over.
The BlueJays SS can be anyone at this point. Espinal is better defensively than Bo longterm. I like Urena better than Bo at SS. Valera needs to be cut.
Forget Simmons, the Jays need two starters first and foremost. One new starter needs to be elite and the other new starter very good. Then they will have a chance. The Jays rotation right now is awful except for Ryu.
Yankee Clipper
What about Nate Pearson? I thought he was a decent arm?
EastCoastCanuck
Nates a stud. Just not built up for a full season. He should be in a #4 spot if the Jays can be careful with him.
Aaron Sanchez was electric. They brought him up in the pen and was great. There was huge debate wether to send him to AAA the following year to get built up but Jays brought him up to start. He did great. After the all star break the debating recommenced wether or not he should scale back to the pen to finish the season. He continued to start games. He lead the league with the lowest era that year. Everyone expected huge things from him.
He was never the same after that.
I hope it serves as a cautionary tale. One the organization has learned from.
