The Rangers have signed right-handed reliever Hunter Wood to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training, according to a team announcement.
Wood, 27, spent last year with the Cleveland organization, but he did not appear in the bigs. The team designated Wood for assignment and then outrighted him in late July.
Before heading to Cleveland in a July 2019 trade, Wood was a fairly effective part of the Rays’ bullpen. The former 29th-round pick (2013) debuted in 2017 and has since logged a 3.32 ERA/4.22 SIERA with a 21.6 percent strikeout rate and an 8.0 percent walk rate over 86 2/3 innings, including a career-best 45 1/3 frames in 2019. Wood has averaged about 94 mph on his fastball and has recorded a solid swinging-strike rate of 12.6 percent.
Why has Wood had to settle for minor league deals without getting a call up the past two years? His numbers don’t seem too bad.
Good addition for BP depth, now go get Williams, Walker, or Archer to bolster SP, get rid of Odor, and find support for Gallo.
Anything else I can do for you uncle Louis? (If you know, you know)
Idk how they get rid of odor, but yes please do. Honestly I would shop Gallo to the Mets after they missed out on springer. And I hope we get 1 of the 3 sp you named
The return would have to be one of D.Smith, J.D. Davis, Nimmo, and Luchessi? Don’t see NY METS doing that. If Rangers trade Gallo and I am 100% against this idea it would be to ATL for one of Wilson, Wright, or Davidson + Riley or to NYY for Frazier, Andujar, and one of Gill or Schmidt. Do not really see any of those things happening. If one did it would probably be something similar in a NYY trade as mentioned.
great depth pickup
Rangers are turning into tampa bay west with all the players they have gotten from the Ray’s organization the last couple of years
They have been picking up a high number of players from the Rays. The Rays have historically placed a very high amount of value on a players intangibles/leadership skills. Those that are lacking typically get let go. Will be intriguing to watch how the players the Rangers pick up from Tampa pan out.
This bread has NUTS in it!!!
When are you gonna do another racism lecture? We could all use a laugh! Teach us how “woke” you are! That’s SO funny that you post comments that are meaningless! How clever!
RIP Don Sutton. Another HOFer lost
Ranger FAns or others, based on current FAs or trades who would you think is best player to provide protection for Gallo and still fit into future plans?
Now that Kim’s off the board, I’d say not much though my first thought would be Puig. We’d have to stick Taveras in AAA to start the season, but I see one of Gallo, Puig, or Dahl getting moved by deadline time. Puig is a big bounce-back candidate, and a great buy-low option right now. He also provides another right handed bat to a now lefty-heavy offense. Here’s the lineup:
Dahl
IKF
Gallo
Puig
Lowe-Guzman
Solak
Calhoun-Lowe
Trevino
Andrus
I sincerely like what I’ve seen from Guzman this off-season, and I think he might push Lowe to the DH spot and force Calhoun into a trade for a pitcher. I like how 1b looks right now a lot.
Calhoun has no real value. Yes he is cheap, but he has not hit constantly, he is a poor defender (prob a DH only type player), and has had questions surrounding his healthy. Other teams will sign one of the many established Free agent DH types, and not give up one of there pitchers.
Guzman has me intrigued too (for the first time ever).
I disagree with the Calhoun statement. he has shown very good offensive upside. he had a rough year after breaking his jaw but I think he will be one of our best hitters next season
Renato Nunez. Right handed bat. Showing signs of being a good player. About to hit “power hitter prime years” and under team control for 4 more years to who ever picks him up.
He can mainly DH and play 3B and 1B.
Good call on Nunez. I wouldn’t hate that signing at all.
This is yet another solid RP pickup by the JD regime. I’m surprised he got a minor league deal, I thought he’d go to Miami or somewhere on a big league deal. Great get to throw into our current over-flow of RP.
Hopefully they will begin trading a couple of the more sought after bullpen arms for some more prospect depth.
Ehh… the only one I’d trade out of the good bunch is Leclerc, and I want him to build his stock back up.
Oh wait, Joely can be traded now. He looked great last season, and his contract expires after 21′.
Wouldn’t be surprise if he makes the opening day roster
Alderson should just run everything
Can not believe the Orioles passed on this guy. He was really solid in Tampa.
This looks like a good deal, especially for a 27-year-old pitcher with a career ERA+ of 133. I wonder what kept him out of the bigs last year, tho…
Hunter would have been a perfect acquisition for the Mets about 24 hours ago.
No idea why, other than I am a goob, but I thought this said Kerry Wood at first.
