The Rangers announced that they have acquired outfielder Carl Chester from the Rays. Chester is the player to be named later in the teams’ December trade that sent first baseman Nate Lowe to Texas.
Now 25 years old, Chester was a 12th-round pick in 2017 who has topped out at the Double-A level so far in his career. He debuted there in 2019 and slashed .264/.299/.405 with a pair of home runs in 127 plate appearances. Overall, Chester has batted .284/.340/.397 and smacked 13 homers over 1,283 trips to the plate in the minors. Chester did not rank among the Rays’ 30 best prospects at Baseball America, FanGraphs or MLB.com before the trade.

Heard he is fast, good contact hitter and a developing power bat….sounds great for the Rangers
Rangers29
Bleh. He’s a bad hitting, speedy left fielder in AA. Nothing special.
ruckus727
Nate Lowe is a solid pick up for nothing. Nice move Texas.
Superstar Car Wash
In 2020, Lowe was tied for 7th place in the AL for intentional walks.
DarkSide830
i wouldnt say “nothing.” Tampa got some solid backend top-30 prospects for him.
Rangers29
Heriberto Hernandez is a stud. I think we actually gave up quite a lot in that trade. That same package could’ve gotten us a decent pitcher instead, but 6 years of Nate Lowe isn’t bad either. I just hope he produces out of the 1b clog that TB had.
Ronald Guzman also got the Dominican League MVP, but that’s not why I’m excited. He hit all of his 5 homers in the DWL off of lefties, whom he was atrocious against in 2020 (and during his career). I’d love to see his elite defense be paired with a good middle of the order bat, but if does that next season, then he or Nate Lowe is definite trade bait (assuming Calhoun can hit again after his off 2020).
It’s interesting to watch, for sure.
lolzmets
“Bleh” is not an actual word. Try to expand your vocabulary so that you don’t resort to the laziness of using sounds as words.
WeeWoo
Says the guy who has “lol” in this handle.
Rangers29
*lolz*
Monkey’s Uncle
Chester Cheetah would have been a more interesting, and possibly better, acquisition.
Superstar Car Wash
What a huge neck! I don’t want to speculate, but a neck that big is usually a sign that a player might be on “something” that might cause a player to get suspended for 80 games or so.
Rangers29
Lmao, I only looked at his Mlb.com page, and it didn’t have a picture of him. That is a thiccccc neck with 5 c’s.
Marty McRae
Name other examples of a thick neck = steroids. You are thinking about Barry Bonds’ head, not necks.
Have you never seen Sheldon Neuse before?
Superstar Car Wash
I Googled “‘thick neck’ steroids” and read several articles for almost five minutes that helped reinforce my suspicion and made me somewhat of an expert on the topic now.
Still, I am rooting for this little Chester boy and hope he stays on the straight and narrow path!
rct
Is it a big neck or a tiny head? He doesn’t seem big otherwise and has shown a severe lack of power in the minors.
gw9999
My $s is it’s more of a tiny head issue. Hopefully they are drawing lots of pictures instead of putting a lot of stats in front of him when they are reviewing upcoming pitchers.
Marty McRae
It’s not that big a trade, but Rangers wiped the floor on TB with this one. Rare miss by TB but out of anyone, they can afford them.

It was all about age and clock on these players for the Rays. Rays got cleaned up well in rule 5 draft. In particular in the minors draft. So it makes sense to restock lower levels again. Basabe may turn out as the best player of all players who changed hands
bobtillman
Yup….I believe Chester crashed into a wall while playing in Hudson Valley. He was left exposed in Rule 5 and went unclaimed, which probably why he was a PTBNL.
Basabe has tools like crazy. Doesn’t mean they’ll translate, but the Rays are usually pretty good at that.
vtadave
Maybe give Tampa Bay some benefit of the doubt….
iverbure
Marty, how many times have you seen any of the guys the rays got? Oh 0 times that’s what I thought.
lolzmets
Marty just declares things as if he knows. But he’s a real social justice warrior.
FWsportsman
Seems just like a depth guy but who knows.
Ully
Lake Brantley high school should rename it’s feild after Chester. Smoke em if you got em boys!
bucketbrew35
Wonder how long until Brandon Lowe is traded? I’m surprised they aren’t already selling high after his WS performance tbh. Their org depth chart for middle infielders is insane. They could start the season with Franco and bump Adames to second. Or they could go with either Vidal Brujan or Xavier Edwards there. They have lots of options.
balloonknots
I’m going say age 28/29 Brandon – rays business model is age 22-28 usually. Get the value and do not pay for fat $ years.
balloonknots
For since I live close to stadium would say let them go. Come to enjoy the young years so much and getting quality live mlb late in the year on a low budget ticket price is awesome!
bobtillman
Ticket Price? How much do they pay you to go to the games?
balloonknots
For lower level by 3rd base usually about $25 with free parking. A family pack when the whole family goes is $60 but that’s outfield lower level cause wife like to see kk lol!
balloonknots
But I have a ticket agent assigned cause I will bring the whole family about 30 to about 8 games a year with tailgating and all. Those come with even a gift from rays for each too thru group ticketing.
balloonknots
It’s been a great product on the field for the 13 years I have lived here. Great young talent always there to watch. Creative baseball with the shifts and opener started here in Tampa. You can hate all you want but I’ll enjoy my quality mlb late into season unlike most teams. Haha
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
So it is his name pronounced Low with an e? Or is is Lau like Brandon Lowe on the Rays?
Ghost Pepper
Its Low. Like Brow with an e.
