Justin Turner has four options on the table that would place him on a contender, with the Dodgers and Blue Jays two of the four, per MLB Insider Jon Heyman (via Twitter). Still, Heyman notes, the Dodgers are confident they will be able to bring Turner back to Chavez Ravine. The hold-up continues to be the length of the deal, as Los Angeles targets a two-year pact, while the 36-year-old seeks four years. Speculatively speaking, looking for other potential landing spots leads naturally to the NL East, where any of the Braves, Nationals, Mets, or Marlins could theoretically find room for Turner. Elsewhere…
- The Nationals responded today with a statement to recent cuts made by the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. The Nats’ years-long headache over MASN – the local sports network co-owned by the Nationals and Orioles, but controlled by the Orioles – took another turn this week as on-air personalities Dan Kolko, Bo Porter, and Alex Chappell were let go without prior notice being given to the Nats, per Ben Strauss and Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post. In the Nationals’ statement, provided by the Athletic’s Britt Ghiroli (via Twitter), they wrote, “…To say that we are incredibly disappointed and upset by MASN’s decisions would be a gross understatement. To be clear – these decisions were made by MASN and against our wishes…” Porter, of course, was a coach with the Nationals from 2011 to 2012 and later managed the Astros for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He has teamed with Kolko on pre- and postgame shows since 2019, during which time Chappell has served as a dugout reporter.
- Omar Minaya will accept an ambassadorship with the Mets to be a public presence for the organization, per Mike Puma of the New York Post (via Twitter). Minaya’s relationship with the Mets dates back to childhood, but his professional career began drawing notice during his time as an assistant general manager from 1998 to 2001. He became the Mets’ general manager from 2004 until 2010, when he was succeeded by Sandy Alderson. After four years with the Padres and some time working for the MLBPA, Minaya returned to serve as one of Alderson’s lieutenants in 2017. He stayed on with the team through the Brodie Van Wagenen era, but he was let go as part of the housecleaning under the new ownership of Steve Cohen. Minaya now returns for his fourth stint with the team. It does not sound as if Minaya will have any impact on baseball operations.

I hadn’t looked into the MASN story very deep, but holy crap they sound like a scummy group.
IBackTheNats6
I’m a Nats fan and the orioles have been screwing us for no reason for far too long. The Nats have sued and won for other reasons and Dan Kolko is an extremely popular caster for us, I’m gonna miss him.
User 4245925809
Baltimore didn’t want the Nat’s in their economic area to begin with, yet MLB forced the franchise upon them. Can’t really blame the o’s, who own MASN for making the relationship as bad as possible monetarily for the Nat’s since they see every dollar going to the Nats as 1 less potentially to them. Nat fans look at 1 side of this, not the side of the organization that was there for the previous 40y before the “new” one ever arrived and not even bringing up DC had a chance already for a team, but a crappy stadium and poor support sent them quickly packing decades ago.
KCJ
So how long are the Orioles going to continue to whine about this? Hasn’t it been long enough like 5 years ago? Time to grow up and put on the big boy pants in Baltimore.
Why do I get the feeling we are still going to be hearing from people like John Silver in 25 years talking about how the Nats are taking the Orioles money…blah blah blah. Get over it already and start acting like men.
In the meantime, the Orioles continue to screw over people who are completely innocent in this whole thing…regardless of how you view it. The fans don’t deserve this. The announcers didn’t deserve this. The production people who were let go didn’t deserve this….
iverbure
This is a horrible take. I’m so sick of particularly young people signing contracts or making bad decisions they haven’t thought out (going to college and taking on crippling debt only to drop out and not get a degree) and whining about it later. They should get rid of my debt!!! Even though I knew it was a thing and I’m stupid if I cry enough maybe they get rid of it.
The nationals begged and said let us in. We’ll play and follow whatever rules. Got the team and established then realized how bad the deal was and tried to get more. The option should be keep the current agreement or leave Washington. Who cares if it’s a competitive disadvantage, don’t renege on a deal you agreed to just to get your foot in the door.
Reminds me of fans in expansion. They will say just let us have a team! We won’t whine even if we have the lowest payroll. 5 years in they’ll say we can’t compete crying. You let us in the league change the rules so we can compete! Just shut up.

@iverbure: Not sure where this epiphany came from but well done, great post. Even though it didn’t matter I went through the mundane task of hitting the “like” button 100 times because it was well deserved.

And yet the Washington Senators suffered by letting in the former St. Louis Browns in as the Orioles. As for the crappy Senators, that was caused by penny pinching ownership, not lack of fan support. As for the current situation, courts have repeatedly ruled that the O’s are not complying with what they AGREED to. Yes there are 2 sides to every story, but better to tell the complete story than cherry pick the facts to support a conclusion..
OlneyOgre
I’m sure you remember the similar economic bargain struck with Calvin Griffith so he agreed to the Browns move to Baltimore. No? Well it’s similar to the TV agreement still being argued about today. Most of the Orioles owners owned the large regional breweries in the area. They satisfied Senators ownership by buying all the radio and TV sponsorships on the Senators TV and radio network. In essence making Senators profitable without selling tickets. The economic value of TV and radio is still being argued today. When we forget history, we are doomed to repeat it.

John Silver’s post is the typical weak position taken by some O’s fans since Washington rightfully gained a franchise in 2005.
Success/failure of any business starts at the top. And its’ clear The Orioles ruination has been due to Angelos. Not that evil boogeyman franchise in DC.
Anyone in MLB will say that the Nationals existence has been a vast financial success for MLB and its’ team owners. As it has for the baseball fans in the DC area. Both of those successes trump the self-pity dished out by The Orioles.
From 1954-1972, The Orioles did JUST FINE operating and competing against the Washington Senators within their OWN market. Just as the NFL Ravens have done against the WFT since the Ravens inception decades ago.
There is no reason – NONE – for the 6th largest metro area in the U.S. (and one of the most affluent) to be under baseball “control” by a neighboring small market franchise. Especially since the majority of people in DC metro area have rejected the Orioles from the beginning.
Edward Bennett Williams, a Washingtonian who owned the Baltimore Orioles, funded what was to now be Orioles Park at Camden Yards, which is the crown jewel of MLB parks. So in regards to your petulent comment about Washington losing a baseball team due to “a crappy stadium and poor support”, what does it say that the Orioles have a GREAT stadium with CRAPPY support?
It’s 2021. Time for the Orioles franchise to get over their undeserved Entitlement of 34 years and start to run their business the right way
andremets
Ha, for a moment there, I thought you were talking about how Baltimore stole the Cleveland Browns and I was like, “why is he bringing up football?” But I remembered that Griffin Stadium had something to do with baseball…my takeaway: protect your beloved team from those team-stealing Baltimorites!
Natsman1
Iverbure’s post is not an epiphany. It’s about as factless and wrong as can be imagined.
The center of the Nationals argument has not been to tear up the TV deal with the Orioles, a deal that they had NO input or agreement on.
Rather, their argument has been that the Orioles owe the Nationals hundreds of millions of dollars since as far back as 2012, and have not acted in good faith based on that and other terms of the agreement. Further, since this legal dispute commenced years ago between the 2 clubs, the Orioles have been struck down by MLB arbiters and courts time after time. And The Orioles are desperately using the appeals process to avoid what is inevitable.
funkmasta198
Once again nationals are whining.. I see the cuts but no mention on how the Orioles had more announcers cut than the nationals actually had.. funny how that’s not mentioned in attempt to continue to try and make masn and Orioles look bad. They cut pregame and postgame down and made some cuts. Masn also is adding streaming of games and pregame for both Orioles and nationals games for in area service accounts.. could add both sides of story.
Natsman1

The only reason for the 6th largest metro area in the U.S. (and one of the most affluent) to be under baseball “control” by a neighboring small market franchise is a legal reason. Yes, but part of the issue with the debt involves a lot of groups.
1-The schools are thoroughly corrupt. I could go in there with a 1000 SAT and alcohol on my breath, but if I can land a $200k loan, the school will tell me that a philosophy degree is the best investment I will ever make. Notwithstanding the fact that the help wanted ads don’t often list ‘company philosopher needed’.
2-Then there is the segment of society that thinks everyone needs a college degree. Sure, if you have the goods to be a STEM major. For everyone else, thank god for Starbucks.
So here is my hint for the day, besides philosophy jobs not being a real thing.
You cannot simultaneously claim that a college degree is a great investment AND have a college loan problem. If you have a great college degree, you likely don’t have a loan problem.

@Oldmanviejo
Can you point to anywhere the Orioles have not lived up to the original deal? The original deal was the orioles would get a certain percent in favor of the orioles with 1 percent more every year going to the nationals until a certain split was reached. The national believed they deserved more of a percent and had a separate firm present a calculation which the nationals sent to mlb panel years after the original deal was agreed to .. the mlb panel agreed to the calc but not the orioles …
They went to courts and they basically said for mlb to handled and ruled in favor of nationals based on mlb panel agreement with orioles allowed to appeal … orioles was willing to give a little but nationals wanted more because they are earning more than the orioles. They went for a 2nd appeal which went the same way as the first.
In the end, only the orioles are honoring the original deal not mlb or the nationals.
dclivejazz
Speaking of reneging on a deal, the O’s haven’t lived up to terms of the MASN deal from day one. Any sane league would have abrogated the deal by now in response.
Angelos has run MASN on the cheap as he does the O’s and of course it poorly serves both teams in terms of promoting them more fully.
Angelos intransigence regarding the return of baseball to DC cost the O’s the support of many DC area fans who used to be huge O’s fans and were prepared to fully embrace both. He certainly affected me that way, for example, and I boycotted the O’s for 10 years after being a major fan for decades.
Lastly, it’s ridiculous to consider DC a part of Baltimore’s market. DC is a much bigger market than Baltimore and people who make this crazy claim conveniently forget that the original Senators didn’t oppose the O’s moving to Baltimore in the first place. MLB could have moved a team to DC without giving Angelos a boon.
O’s fans need to worry more about actually showing up for their team and stop whining about the Nats. The O’s should also think smarter about how to appeal more to Nats fans.

Natman1: See @JoeBrady’s post. I can’t explain it any better. Epiphany it was, exactly for those reasons, and right on point too.
Natsman1
The rhetoric and hyperbole is amusing. An epiphany is typically defined as a manifestation of a divine or supernatural being. Sorry, Nationals fans (or The Lerners for that matter) will not define the inane posts you’re championing as “epiphanies”. As a Yankees fan, I suspect the only thing you know about this near decade-long topic is this article, and very little else.
Yankee Clipper
No, it’s not. When you look a word up online you need to look past the first definition of the word. I’m not going to define it for you because it’s a good lesson for you to go back into your online dictionary and scroll down to definitions 2 or 3 or 4. Words can have more than one specific definition sir. And again, see JoeBrady’s post, because you’re taking this way too personally.
Nice try though.

I can’t believe any team would even take his agents call if he wants 4 years. Every team would be wise and come out and say we’ve made a team rule and nobody over the age of 36 gets more than one year ever.

It’s his last contract and he’s posturing. All said and done he gets a 2 yr deal with LAD and some options/ vesting language for a 3rd if he’s lucky. I’ma guess they want him back, but he doesn’t have the sway to get anything towards a 3rd year

One nobody else got Covid both teams tested negative and were allowed to go home the following day.
Two he just didn’t magically have it in the 8th inning. If Turner had it he had it the entire game. He had been in contact with his teammates and the Rays players for hours before, 10 mins after the game didn’t really matter.
Three his teammates asked him to come onto the field after the game which means they knew he tested positive and they still wanted him with them. They are the only people in this situation that were at risk and they accepted the risk. Get over it.
Yankee Clipper
Great point, he didn’t just get it in the eighth inning. So he had it the whole game?! And still played? That’s terrible. Even worse. But, I guess if his teammates wanted him to play, there’s nothing the grown man could do to stop it. Thank for the perspective.
BlueSkies_LA
I imagine Dave Roberts wouldn’t like to be thought of as elderly at age 48. He isn’t that, but as a cancer survivor he is very protective of his health.
Anyway, that JT story is over. He confessed to a lack of judgment, a player outbreak was seemingly avoided (we were never really told either way), and everybody decided to move on with lessons learned. Time to let it go.
Blessyouboys
Give Turner 3 Years with a team option on a 4th for 60 million dollars!
Yankee Clipper
What if the Jays give him 3 years and a box of masks?
its_happening
Then the Jays are really running a risk with an aging yet very lethal hitting 3B and you need get over what Turner and the Dodgers did. Zerbs summed it up perfectly. Forgive and move on.

I’m guessing he wants like 4 years/$65M or so and they’d prefer 2 years/$25M? So split the difference: 3 years/$45M.
Dorothy_Mantooth
2 guaranteed years and a 3rd year vesting option is the best he can hope for out of LA. Friedman knows how to play hardball better than anyone. I’m willing to bet Toronto will offer 3 guaranteed years but I’m guessing Turner’s heart remains with LA. Will be interesting to see what he decides to do.
Lurking
Rumors I’ve heard is he’s asking for 15M per for 4. So 4/60. I’d bet LA is at least at 2/30, and maybe even something like 2/35+ vesting option for AB or PA or something.
But I’d be shocked if anyone is willing to give him 4 at 15 per
Cap & Crunch
He wont get 4/60
3/40 imo is almost the ceiling
Can prolly get a 2/32 but I dont see him betting on that 8 mill at 38-
I think he takes the greatest largest sum (which I think will be Tor) or he takes a discount on a 2+1 w LAD ~ Tor might be the only team willing to guarantee that 3rd year so they might be a good wildcard bet to land him-LAD still fav tho
GoLandCrabs
JT is not asking for more than the contract that covered his last 4 prime years.
Chief Two Hands
The Dodgers should give Turner 3 years. Even as his production goes down, his presence and leadership alone holds a lot of value for them. Plus, the Dodgers can afford it. It would not surprise me if Turner would accept that compromise to stay in L.A.
BlueSkies_LA
I’d bet on two years plus a healthy option, possibly performance based. If he was going to get four years from somebody straight-up or even three, he’d be signed by now. I don’t like the standoff but it feels like the player has an upper hand now, and the Dodgers have their feet to the fire a bit. It’s isn’t like they have a great Plan B if they don’t sign him.

The O’s had him in the majors for a dozen games in ’09. He wasn’t above average until five years and two teams later. I wouldn’t be too hard on Baltimore about this one.

They didn’t give him a fair shake. I would disagree with u on that
SalaryCapMyth
Okay, but he did get a good chance with the Mets after the he Orioles and he still wasn’t good. I don’t think you can fault the Orioles on this one either.
Jean Matrac
13Morgs13:
You can’t blame the O’s for putting Turner on waivers. Why not blame the Reds for trading him to to the O’s. It’s not like he immediately started raking with the Mets. He had 4 seasons in NY and could only post a 95 OPS+.
The Mets gave up on him and it’s hard to blame them as well. It wasn’t until after the Mets released him that he went to that hitting guru (I forget his name), and changed his swing.
Maybe Turner should have looked at improving his hitting before he was 6 seasons into his career. Then maybe teams wouldn’t have given up on him.
Robrock30
Turner was used as a utility player with Mets and had a fabulous first month in May 2011 with them winning NL Rookie of the month. He got a bad rep though as he was the cream pie in the face circus act copied from Yankees AJ Burnett and he didn’t agree with Sandy Alderson’s plate discipline approach to take walks and he was deemed falsely as a bad influence on Ike Davis who went downhill. He was sort of railroaded out of town.
KCJ
13Morgs13 –
Yeah, it’s just amazing that the Orioles didn’t predict the swing change that Turner made 6 years later that completely changed his offensive game. What a bunch of fools
Mjshof
13 Morgan- And you’d be wrong
Robrock30
It was Omar Minaya who traded for Justin Turner with the Mets and he produced but Omar was fired by the Mets and replaced with Sandy Alderson who nontendered Turner who excelled with the Dodgers. Wilpons eventually lost confidence in Alderson and rehired Omar as an advisor and Omar was retained by Brodie van Wagenen. The new Owner brought back Alderson who then fired Brodie van Wagenen and Omar but now Omar is back. What a soap opera
sirklearhead
Bringing Minaya back as Interm GM is the correct way to go. It was Realmuto, Bauer and or Springer. We got Lindor and traded 4 young pieces away. Sandy switch to McCann to possibly squeeze in both Springer and Bauer. Now it’s a long shot on Bauer. Sandy blew this to pieces. Minaya signed Beltran, Martinez,Wagner,Dickey,Turner, scouted Reyes, drafted Murphy and deGrom. What the heck are we waiting for
Robrock30
Hey Sirklearhead,
You are preaching to the choir. POBO, GM, Springer & Hand FAIL. His last 2 Hires fired, No Realmuto and Lindor is a one year rental. Yet he has somewhat of a cult following Hans Christian Alderson’s The Emperor’s New Clothes LOL.
Mjshof
Metsies returning to the mean. The dysfunction runs deep in this one (sic organization)…
Robrock30
True and now the new Owner hires the former Owner’s “Son” who was just fired by Sandy back in November. What could go wrong after the newly hired GM was fired after only 37 days due to a sexting stalking scandal which he admitted to. I know Omar will probably bring Carlos Beltran back who was fired one year ago as manager for lying about his role in the Astros cheating scandal.
mumsy01
Turner turned his career completely around in LA. He was a meh player for the Mets. Good for him and the Dodgers. Nobody would have seen that coming. Letting Murphy go was Alderson’s big mistake and the awful trades he made when he dumped the veterans in 2017. Not one player for Granderson, Addison Reed, Duda, Jay Bruce, etc. I think Drew Smith is only one in the Mets org.
mumsy01
I think Omar gets a pretty bad wrap. He was a good GM. Just the players choking in 07 and 08 tarnished his legacy. I have talked to him many times in the gym. Great guy to have as ambassador!
Robrock30
Mumsy,
Correct you are. Dan Murphy blossomed right under Alderson’s nose and became the toughest out in the NL winning NLCS MVP and yet Alderson only offered him the QO hoping that he would turn it down for a draft choice which he did.
WarrenSpahn
he got a bad wrap? what is that exactly?
timpa
Hitting on Turner made up for the Dodgers giving up on Jayson Werth. If you look at Turners best 6 year run its .302/.382/.503/.886 139 OPS+
Werth was .280/.374/.482/.856 127 OPS+
opranger
The Dodgers didn’t give up on Jayson Werth, he was free agent and signed with the Phillies! He also I believe had a lingering issue with his hand or a finger that hadn’t healed! And BTW Werth couldn’t carry Turner’s jockstrap!

Me too but I don’t like the chances. He’s been very clear about wanting to remain in LA so if two years got it done for Turner, he would be a Dodger by now. Would three years be enough to pry him away from his highschool sweet heart? I guess nobody can be certain but if it did I think there would be competition for the Braves.
JAMES JACOBSEN
@salarycapmyth Who do you think the Braves will get or do you think their done for the year

Braves definitely signing an arm or two for the bullpen.

The Angelos family have been poor owners of the Orioles, but the Orioles had every right to fight MLB and the Nationals because both agreed to the rights fee arrangement before MLB put the Expos franchise in DC. Selig and now Manfred have been punishing the Orioles at every chance they get – withholding the All-Star game, taking Toronto’s side in the tampering with Duquette – all to try to pressure the Orioles to rip up their original deal because it was so favorable to the Orioles.
MLB and the Nationals franchise knew what the terms were to relocate to DC. If they didn’t like it, they could have picked another city. Now MASN, which wasn’t making much in profits anyway, can’t afford to pay these increased rights fees that have been forced on them by MLB and the Nationals, so both teams will have to face the consequences. The Angelos family no longer has an interest in fighting, but the Nationals will reap what they sow for trying and succeeding to nullify the deal that brought them their in the first place.
2012orioles
I think the Orioles were in the right until 2011, and then they were supposed to evaluate the value of the Nationals, and since then it’s been back and forth on how much they divide the revenue/how much the Orioles owe the Nats
Veejh
All of this was agreed upon by the MLB and the O’s, not the Lerners. The MLB didn’t really give a flying **** other than getting the team out of Canada. The deal is total b.s., and now, the Os are an abomination of an organization that controls the TV rights to a much more financially sound team. A) Peter Angelos is a demon. B) Angelos doesn’t give a **** about baseball. C) Angelos is about to die. His last dying wish is to continue to screw the Nats all the way to the grave. He’s a piece of garbage.
KCJ

Actually the only recent run of success for the O’s coincided with the arrival of the Nats and Angelos being forced to field a more competitive team. O’s fans should grateful to the Nats for that.

I think Braves might be willing to go 2/30 no options
Mets I can see trying a 2+1 like LAD with perhaps up to 40 guaranteed if yr 3 option picked up
In the end-
55%-LAD
25%- Tor
15%- NYM/ATL
5%-Mystery team

This MASN mess is embarrassing for the Nationals. I’m surprised the Nats haven’t opted for their own network like the Yankees,Cubs,Dodgers have.
Veejh
If it were only that simple. This has been wrapped up in courts for years and years.

They are currently legally tied to MASN. Part of the settlement when they moved was that they would HAVE to share a network with the Os.
However, as I said above, the Orioles have several revenue sharing periodss they are contesting, While it would take another legal action to dissolve and reconstitute MASN in some new form., there is very little motivation for the Orioles to pony up what they owe. It is reasonable to assume their would be a dispute in every revenue period.
The long term solution is one of two choices:
Either it’s two networks or
MASN is equally owned by both clubs or neutral third party.
quietstorm3
4 years for Turner. I don’t see that happening with no team.

Nice work Capt C

Stream the pregame online and watch a nice ratings fall for MASN. No commercials just live read sponsors. And a post game.
Blue Jays…you need pitching. The Springer signing only takes you so far. Offer Turner 2-yr/$38-mil plus team option. See how that goes over. Otherwise start chasing SP. You need it.

The time for compensation for the move into the DC area is officially over. The Orioles have not operated as good faith partners. MASN will belong to the Os and either a new network or NBCS Washington can carry the Nats games.
That will finally put an end date on the rolling dispute between the teams.

Jays are signing this old guy (i am 43) to a 2 year deal because you have Groshans and Martin coming. One of which will be traded at some point. Anything more than 2 years he gets in the way.and would be tough to trade,.unless he defies the odds. Sign Walker and Paxton over Bauer. Get er done!
stormie
If they sign anyone to a 2+ year deal to play 3rd, Groshans is likely traded for pitching. That they are interested in Turner and were interested in DJLM, suggests that’s the route they would like to take.
They would still have Miguel Hiraldo waiting in the wings to potentially play 3B by 2023 if they moved Groshans. Martin doesn’t appear to have the arm to play 3rd and will likely be groomed for CF to eventually bump Springer over to RF.
its_happening
Possibly. Groshans might become the next 1B and that means bye bye Tellez. Groshans hasn’t lit the world on-fire defensively on the left side. Who knows.
Albeit unpopular I think Teoscar should be the guy dealt for a pitcher. Bad defender, great stick, in arbitration years.
stormie
That doesn’t seem very likely, I think they would trade Groshans before moving him over to 1B, if indeed they don’t trade him regardless.
It’s a small sample obviously, but Tellez really had a monster year in 2020 by all measures and dramatically cut his K rate. If he can produce anywhere close to what he did last year going forward, they need his left-handed power bat in the lineup long-term, even if that means being stuck with him and Vlad as the 1B/DH combo going forward and having little to no flexibility with the DH spot.
I could see them selling high on Teoscar and keeping Grichuk in RF and wouldn’t be completely against it for the right return.
its_happening
Stormie, I’m good with Tellez. Why some Jays fans are down on Tellez baffles me except I believe the organization isn’t high on him either. Hence the Tellez idea. Rowdy has been overlooked.
Groshans will have another shot at the left side to pick up his game. He (hopefully) should be over his foot problems. If he can take a big step forward it erases my last comment.

John Angelos is the control person now. If you don’t like his moves—don’t put him in control. He is horrible person—He is just like his father. Has John Angelos commented on these moves yet? Is he hiding out in Nashville? Where is he?
BasedBall
If Turner walks, LA has the bats and versatility to replace him at 3rd and the plate.
But he’s probably worth 3 years as a player/swing coach.
If they resign Turner are they going to extend or trade Chris Taylor?
Price, Kershaw, Seager, Taylor, and Jansen all hit FA next year?
I think 2 of those can receive a QO, but only 1 seems probable.
Cap & Crunch
Price still under contract next year-
Blessyouboys
The Blue Jays will hopefully sign him. His talent and playoff experience along Springer and hopefully Bauer might get us a wildcard spot today.
Go Jays Go!
