Alejandro Kirk’s bat has drawn a lot of attention over his three pro seasons, including a 2020 MLB debut that saw the Blue Jays catcher post a .983 OPS over his first 25 plate appearances as a big leaguer. As one might expect, rival teams have taken notice of Kirk, with TSN’s Scott Mitchell reporting that the Pirates and Indians have both tried to acquire the catcher within the last 14 months.
Cleveland wanted Kirk in a potential Corey Kluber trade with the Jays last offseason, prior to the deal that saw Kluber sent to Texas for Delino DeShields Jr., Emmanuel Clase and the Rangers agreeing to absorb all of Kluber’s $17.5MM salary for the 2020 season. The Pirates’ interest was more recent, as Mitchell notes that the Bucs “tried to pry him away” from Toronto just this past summer.
The Blue Jays and Pirates were known to be in discussions over such pitchers as Trevor Williams, Chad Kuhl, and Joe Musgrove prior to the trade deadline, with a trade for Musgrove reportedly falling through at the veritable last minute. Since Pittsburgh GM Ben Cherington came to the job after working in Toronto’s front office, it isn’t surprising that the rebuilding Pirates and the aggressive Blue Jays are often mentioned as potential trade partners. Musgrove is still a hot commodity on the trade market, and with the Jays still looking to add pitching, a deal could certainly still come together between the two sides before the offseason is through.
Likewise, the past Cleveland ties of Jays president Mark Shapiro and GM Ross Atkins have seemingly put the Blue Jays in mind when discussing any potential Indians trade chip. To name one prominent example, Toronto has had interest in Francisco Lindor for well over a year, and Lindor still looms as a potential acquisition given the widespread expectation that the Tribe will deal the shortstop prior to Opening Day.
Whether Kirk could be part of a future deal to Cleveland or Pittsburgh remains in question, however. Mitchell believes the Jays will hang onto Kirk to see if he could be a reliable regular in 2021, both catching and as a DH against left-handed pitching. Danny Jansen is Toronto’s incumbent starter behind the plate, with Reese McGuire and prospects Gabriel Moreno and Riley Adams also on hand to give the Blue Jays quite a bit of major and minor league depth at the position — as Mitchell writes, one of the catchers “will be traded this year, it just won’t be Kirk.” Of course, should the Jays make the big splash to sign free agent target J.T. Realmuto, it would seem likely that multiple catchers (perhaps including Kirk) would be shopped.

SalaryCapMyth
So all it took was 19 games of production of a weird season for you to decide McGuire is no good, eh?
Darthyen
I think your wrong on McGuire. He is a better receiver than Jansen. I think Jansen is the one that needs to go before he becomes JPA 2.0. A change of scenery might do him good but his time in TO is done IMO. I say trade Jansen and bring in a vet catcher that can platoon/backup while teaching the finer points of catching to the young core. of Kirk, McGuire, Adams……(whichever one grabs the job) and “HOPEFULLY” Chuckles the minor league manager lets him run with it..
smuzqwpdmx
McGuire never hit in the minor leagues. His brief period of hitting well in the majors was a fluke of a small sample size. His ceiling is a solid defensive backup who hits .220 without much power and plays once a week
Jansen, while he hasn’t hit lately, has it in him.
SalaryCapMyth
His 2017 numbers in the minors were really good. Between that and good production at the major league level make him enticing.
SalaryCapMyth
His 2017 numbers in the minors were really good. Between that and good production at the major league level I think he is at least enticing.
iverbure
If he hit .220 he would be above average catcher. I don’t think people know how poor catchers are at hitting in mlb. These are the people that probably yell they don’t want to ever see a pitcher hit but haven’t a clue what mlb catchers have slashed the last couple years.
Darthyen
I never said he was a better hitter, I said receiver (helps to read). However neither McGuire, Kirk nor Adams really had a big sample size of major league hitting on a REGULAR (important word) bases to see if they could hit consistently. I think McGuire had the most and it was up then down but spread out.so we really don’t know what either catcher will hit like, or receive like in the case of Kirk, Adams and others, compared to Jansen who seems to be regressing in all aspects of the game which is why I suggested moving on from him.
smuzqwpdmx
McGuire had 149 at bats in 2017. Even an NL pitcher can accidentally put up good numbers in that small a sample. The bigger sample shows a .672 minor league OPS, which isn’t promising.
Some catchers are fine with a .220 AVG, because they have power. Jansen does, McGuire doesn’t.

Depends RD, should we bring up Colon’s PED usage and celebrate him? Is it really exciting to have a different reaction to someone performing at a high level because of how they look? You tell me. It seems like so many teams have expressed that they’ve had interested in a player right after he becomes successful. For example, I remember seeing something about the Yankees wanting Nick Anderson form Miami right after he went on his run with the Rays in 2019. I don’t know if a team really had interest in the player before he got traded or if they just want to say it to make it out like they saw his potential before anyone else

Nobody writes about a team having had interest in a nobody, because nobody will read it. It’s only after they become somebody that it becomes worth talking about.

His complaint is more that they live rent free in the media. Which is kind of silly, when everyone knows they just fake it to try to gain attention. If you don’t like how the sausage is made, stop eating the sausage.
Marty McRae
The rest of us are kind of getting sick of the 8 trillion articles written about every fart cut by anyone employed by the Yankees org. Nothing against any of the players themselves, but damn, MLB needs to stop letting so many more media agencies cover 1 team more than the rest, and enforce a rule where that number of agencies has to be the same for all. It’s been affecting/inflating their prospect rankings every year to now so many have been overrated that no one knows what a prospect is really like unless you watch them in person. The way they also buy onto lists too is corny as hell. There will never be a top 100 prospects list without a Yankee on it, simply because of the media saturation compared to other teams, that affects listmakers in that they don’t feel bad about sticking a Yankee in in the 90s, just to get them on there, even when they did nothing to deserve that other than have way too many think pieces about them than they ever deserved.
I don’t really “hate” the Yankees per se, but one thing is for certain: the national media bias for the Yankees has been the absolute worst thing about them since their return to relevance in 1995.
its_happening
You can’t blame articles when the Yankees, year in and year out, look to sign free agents. 29 other teams can stop them if they choose. Short sighted thought on your part. Media can’t not talk about their pursuit.
The baseball media is a problem for a variety of reasons, but coverage on the Yankees has little to do with it.
BobGibsonFan
WAJGH… Who did the Yankees sign?
SalaryCapMyth
Think I see it WereAllJustGuestsHere (WAJGH from now on because your name is hella long=) way on this one. While I agree that the very nature of places like New York and LA are going to draw more attention, I think the Yankees willingness to spend money and create World Series calibre teams for as long as they have is what really draws them attention.
@BobGibson. I forget, which of the top 5 free agents are still left on the board? Even if they weren’t to sign any of them, their history alone validates them.
its_happening
BobG – why are you asking that question? Did they not sign Cole last year? Lemahieu the year before? Trade for Stanton the year before that? Should that NOT be covered? Should their interests in players NOT be covered? Yankees are typically doing something in the offseason. Lately there have been plenty of stories on the Padres, Mets and Blue Jays. They are active.
Stop whining.
its_happening
SalaryCap – no prob. It’s like when people hated seeing a camera locked on Jeter in October jumping over dugout barriers to celebrate a big play. It wasn’t Jeter’s fault the camera was placed on him. They’re hinting at something with the wrong argument.
BobGibsonFan
No problem when they actually do sign someone good… it’s the signing of minor leaguers that were released from other teams and the constant “The Yankees have an interest in this superstar”… duh, so do half the teams in the league. We’ve been hearing “the yankees are interested in getting DJ back”. No kidding… a lot of teams are interested. MLBTR is shocked when the Dodgers show an interest in him… forgone conclusion that he would be a yankee.
“Ahhhhhh, Trevor Bauer could be a Yankee… how about JT Realmuto… yup, yup… he could be a Yankee too. Wait, Lindor might be traded? Yankees? ” What about any player from Asia? Yep, Yankees. What about a DH type like Schwarber? Yep, Yankees. The last thing they need is another DH. They have a team full of them.
Is there a player out there that the Yankees dont want?
Mrtwotone
I never understood the Yankee hate, I wish my team had the means to do what the Yankees do year in and year out. I’m jealous.
BobGibsonFan
Not win the World Series? I’m glad my team has won some recently… instead of hearing my grandpa tell me how great they used to be.
SalaryCapMyth
Nobody has signed a big name this season yet so it seems silly to say “when they sign someone good.” You can’t count this offseason against them until those names are off the build. Also, even if they don’t, so what? They have cemented themselves so much for going out and getting the player they want that they will get a pass for this year if they don’t.
Call there last world series the distant past if it makes you feel better but gaps of time between titles is much less common for the Yankees than every other team. All this has more to do with all the attention they get than the misgivings you have.
DarkSide830
gotta give to get. lets see if either team is willing to do so.

Mlb1225, have you heard anything about this from people you’ve talked to?
its_happening
There were rumours the Jays were interested in Williams and Kuhl at the deadline which would explain why the Jays said no for Kirk. This seems plausible.
mlb1225
I didn’t, but the Jays and Pirates nearly agreed on a deal that would have sent Musgrove up North, so it makes sense they showed interest.
Todd Kemmerer
Seems good to the pirates pov. Not a single catcher in top 50 organizational prospects. Tor has 2 top 10 organizational catching prosp. 1 this yr and the other next from estimated arrival time. There should be something that could be done.cheeriington knows the Toronto organization prob better than the pirates right now so maybe Toronto is hesitant to deal with him. Also I could see Musgrove plus a reliever for a catching prospect plus 2 other prospects.
Jal179
I 1000% agree. Musgrove for Moreno type deal I bet will happen. Musgrove is a very solid #3 behind Ryu and Pearson. Pirates need a longer term prospect at C like Moreno. I suspect something gets figured out between these two clubs.
Ji-Man Choi
I know someone high up in Pittsburgh’s organization and Kirk was to be included in a package headed to the Pirates for Musgrove but TOR pulled out because they believed they were giving up too much for a guy like Musgrove. Also TOR tried to include another catcher instead of Kirk and Pittsburgh didn’t want that. They were set on Kirk
Jal179
You have legit connections. I’m just a bum fan from the frozen Canadian prairies.
Kirk is probably too much for Musgrove in all honesty.
Polish Hammer
Hmmm Pittsburgh and Cleveland after him? He must carry a league minimum salary…
Ryan K
Not sure how well Kirk will hold up over a full season given his weight, but he has elite bat-to-ball skills. If he could just lose 75 pounds, he would be talked about way more. This guy is talented.
Mrtwotone
Especially the catcher position where you have to squat all the time. That has to be Hell on the knees. It always surprised me how many chubby catchers there are. I see Kirk being a better Willians Astudillo type given the bat to ball skills. I of course see Kirk having more pop though.
filthyrich
A blend of Bengie Molina and Pablo Sandoval would be sweet to me.
Daydreaming.
Pablo was C/1B/3B on his way up. Mostly 3B by his age 22 season.
Not breaking belts yet.
Winning World Serieses. Historic WS MVP performance even. As one of the least likely 3B I can recall seeing.
If you hit, they’ll find a fit.
Jays kind of have a hole at 3B… lol.
Much like the Brewers with Prince, the Giants got the best years of Panda.
Hoping Kirk can beat out Astudillo for the lead role in Panda 2.
Kirk turned some heads in spring 2020, and his PA were a treat to watch, really wanna see him on the big roster for 2021, as 80% DH, 3rd catcher, and even some 1B/3B in blowouts.
Trade chip if it’s an arm at or above Ryu’s level would be fine as well. Feels like it’s going to be fun to watch Kirk’s career for the early part at least. Walk more than K at low level minors. Seemed like a real tough K in his ML stint.
Todd Kemmerer
So does this mean he is a centerpiece, or a part…its not clear how much value he has.
bigdaddyt
Do the pirates even have anyone on the roster that would get them Kirk straight up? Cause I certainly wouldn’t trade him for just musgrove
its_happening
Short answer, no.
kwolf68
If the Jays could move a guy with that physical profile for a quality proven starting pitcher they would. Kirk is likely a DH because there is no question there will be physical regression.
Dude has an elite hit tool, but this player is not Juan Soto type prospect so not sure why people treat him that way. He’s a very good prospect. with major questions in addition to the positive hit talent.
That is NOT a guy who will get an in his prime starting pitcher who many industry people believe is getting ready to really find himself. Kirk would be part of a package.
its_happening
Yep. But not for the Pirates. Gabriel Moreno is the guy to watch for in the Jays organization at Catcher.
jimmertee
I like Adams as a Jays catcher.
Hudson6
The man has a total of 24 mlb AB. Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates has 100 times Kirk’s value. Musgrove does as well.
its_happening
They might have more value than Kirk. They don’t, but they might. Bottom line is the Jays need to aim higher than Musgrove and deal a package for a superior arm.
Mendoza Line 215
WAJGH-Kirk is listed at 5’8” and 265 pounds at 22 years of age.He may be a fine hitter but with those statistics I think that the Jays will be hard pressed to get a lot for him until he is at least somewhat proven at the ML level. How long can he last as a catcher unless he loses 50 pounds?
Many posters fall in love with minor league players but they are basically worthless to a ML team unless they can produce in the ML.
its_happening
Mendoza I don’t disagree with you. All I am saying is the Jays have to go for a better arm than Musgrove (in my opinion) and package a deal including Kirk.
As a hitter Kirk has proven he can get it done in the minors. Watching him playing in the majors he’s not there defensively and good teams can run on him all day long. Slow hands, below average arm.
I’m not sold on the Pirates pitchers. I might be wrong. Just an opinion.
Mendoza Line 215
Actually the Pirates starters pitched very well for about three starts each at the end of the year.Time will tell whether they can continue that with the Pirates or another team.
I do not disagree with you as you are saying that the TOR Jays need a TOR starter.Musgrove is not one.He has been getting a lot of hype since BC is evidently making him available and trying to get the best deal for him.But with pitchers falling like flies,he is a solid #4 on a good team, and is clearly not overpaid with two years of control. That makes him a desirable pitcher for any team.
Kirk was good enough to skip AA and AAA,but perhaps they should season him more at AAA to get a better idea of what they have.He may not be as valuable as you think for a true #1 unless he has more of a track record, and, for now, only in the AL with the DH.
its_happening
AAA I believe is where he will be at this time. Him and Adams. I was a bit surprised he came up over Adams.
Jays would have a place for Musgrove, it’s just the issue with them landing a complimentary top starter with Ryu. They need Bauer in the worst way, and I doubt they will land him. That leaves Castillo, and Kirk would be needed to complete that move. It would be him and other prospects. He would not be the headliner.
bigdaddyt
I’m sorry sir I believe your overvaluing your guys while also not fully understanding how baseball trades work. Kirks value is in his potential while playing a premium position (not gonna argue if he stays as a catcher) along with the years of cheap service that the pirates would be getting. Now Musgrove is a more proven commodity he’s also got what 1-2 seasons left before FA. Plus he’s basically reached his potential at this point in his career he’s a #3 on a bad team 4 on a good team who’s about to be paid like one. Where Kirk is gonna be under a Million for at least 3 years
Todd Kemmerer
Maybe, but their seems to be a market for Musgrove. And I could be wrong but to me his market is basically every mlb team. He can slide in as a #3 with upside, inning eater, or be a back end of the rotation. If by chance he struggles, he has performed well in bullpen. So there are layers to his value. Also seems like a guy that could be extended, has 2 years left on his deal. So if you get 5-7 years out of him I think a win for both sides. I don’t think he has great value, but a bottom top 100 guy or outside top 100 guy plus lottery ticket type players seem like a good deal for both sides
BlueJaysMania

ericl
The reason the Musgrove trade fell apart was that the Blue Jays were unwilling to include Kirk in the deal. That was before he made his impact with the big league club. I don’t see the Jays moving Kirk. The Jays are more likely to move one of their other catchers than Kirk
kwolf68
The legend of Kirk.!!! Excellent contact rate and exit velos, but probably needs a swing change to really get into his game power. He is slower than a fire hydrant and how much longevity will this guy really have at the position he plays?
Anyone saying this guy is “untouchable’ is crazy. Yes, he will be a nice bat to have in there somewhere to push runners along or in, but he isn’t in the same universe as other top flight catching prospects like Adley. Again, nice prospect but lets slow our roll on this guy.
ericl
I didn’t say Kirk is untouchable, but the Jays aren’t trading him for Joe Musgrove.. As for trading him in a Lindor trade, I am skeptical that a Lindor trade happening because the Jays don’t give out contracts of more than 5 years (haven’t done so since 2007) & it will take at least 8 years to extend Lindor. I don’t see the Jays giving a 27-year old Lindor that length on a contract & thus a trade doesn’t happen
Jal179
I will be very disappointed if the Jays move any kind of talent for Lindor. Names like Kirk and Gurriel Jr have been thrown around. There’s no way I’m making that deal for a 1 year rental. Lindor will command $250 million 7-8 year deal which doesn’t really interest me.
turner9
McGuire would be ideal to use as part of a package with Pitt for Musgrove
I’m in favor of keeping Jansen even if we get JTR, Kirk can be part of a Lindor Trade regardless if we get him or not (JTR) the Jays have one of Moreno or Riley to replace him in 3-4 years if he doesn’t reach his potential, not that he was some Uber prospect (Jansen) but still put up decent numbers coming thru the Minors
Take JBJ for a high 1 year AAV until Martin comes up next year
Who needs Free Agency anyway lol
bigdaddyt
I doubt pirates want McGuire back
Mendoza Line 215
The Pirates knew that McGuire was a 220 hitting second string defensive catcher and they are a dime a dozen.
iverbure
I don’t know why anyone thinks any mlb executives look at batting average they don’t, but they sure as hell don’t look at back up catchers batting average.
Mendoza Line 215
Hence they are a dime a dozen no matter what is looked at.The Pirates had Luke Maile and John Ryan Murphy on the cheap last year and did not have to trade a top starting pitcher for them.
This ilk of player will have similiar statistics no matter what One or ones are looked at.
Jal179
Thank you MLBTR for posting this article as I have a strong feeling the Jays will deal from their catching depth.
I keep repeating myself like a broken record but Bauer to the Angels, DJLM to the Yanks, Springer to the Mets AND JTR to the Jays. Jays deal Moreno or Janssen to the Pirates for Musgrove. The comfort level between Cherrington and Shatkins is true man love.
Many will argue that the Jays don’t need JTR (I don’t disagree) but a JTR signing will allow them to turn an organizational strength into a positional powerhouse to allow them to upgrade their rotation. One of Gray, Carrasco or Musgrove I feel will end up a Jay when all is said and done.
Marius
Dombrowskie isnt going to lose out on JTR. I agree with the other FA locations. Jays will have to look at 2nd tier FAs and trades

I’m not sure that Kirk will end up sticking behind the plate. You need to have quickness and agility to play catcher successfully and Kirk seems like his is too big to stay behind the plate as he ages. If his bat stays great, he could move to 1B or DH but I don’t see him sticking in the 2 spot for his entire career.

Todd Kemmerer
I was under the impression that it was mainly Kuhl and Williams at the deadline.
filthyrich
Skipped AA & AAA to get a taste of MLB.
Unreal that he wasn’t hitting like Maile.
The result, despite small sample size, is quite exciting.
Got a hit off Cole.
Only Jay to get a hit off Snell in gm1 of wild card round.
Aroldis was the only pitcher that seemed to have him off balance, and it seemed like he was confusing the announcers as well, trying splitters in a non-save situation against a rook? Unfair haha.
Bigger guys that can hit sometimes have strong primes. Jays won’t have him in his 30s. Trading away his minimum cost seasons while he’s still young is a gamble.
Would Musgrove have made a difference in playoffs 2020?
Might be helpful to make playoffs 2021, but again, does he make a difference in the playoffs?
He was on playoff squads but has limited playoff experience.
Gotta go for a guy that would definitely be starting a game 1 or 2. Ideally one that has done it successfully in the past couple years. In my delusional daydreamer mind haha.
Todd Kemmerer
Agree, but in a trade I feel he won’t bring in a better pitcher. Definitely stand alone or 1 for 1 he won’t get a #1-2 starter
filthyrich
Fair.
I’d prefer save the chip and either see if it blossoms with the Jays, or use as part of a larger package.
I’m definitely no expert, but I don’t see the appeal with Musgrove.
A year of cheap Goldschmidt got the Dbacks a top catcher prospect, a young promising starting pitcher and pieces.
Which makes me wonder about Lindor or Arenado.
I don’t really like either option, but if they came with a Plesac/Carrasco/Marquez/Senzatela then giving up prospect depth starts to gain appeal for me.
Or more preferable to me is looking at the apparently available Contreras. Can Bryant or Baez be included?
How about Castillo? Take Moustakas to lower the cost?
Wait for the Twins to fall off and go for a Berrios/Buxton package?
More believable, wait for the Royals, and go for a Merrifield/Sal package?
Kirk’s value may be peak right now, waiting could backfire. Thankfully some other interesting catchers in the system as well.
Gotta be seeing a real move happen in the next 2 weeks?! The daydreaming is getting outta control here, sorry everybody.
cdav45
Uhhhhh Kirk is a “larger package”.
All you want is Lindor and one of Plesac/Carrasco for a DH with a muffin top and some prospects. Sure, any idiot GM would make that trade.
The Twins have more money than Toronto and they’re not “falling off” anytime soon unfortunately.
its_happening
No, actually. No reason for the Jays to acquire Lindor just to see him leave in a year. The larger package would be Castillo in Cincy, where the Jays deal a bunch of prospects.
Twins don’t have more money than Rogers and never will. Twins are not on stable ground nor can they win a playoff series either.

Another day, and yet another chance to meditate on the logic of the previous Pirates administration. Slowly trade or dump all veterans from the McCutchen era and then, astoundingly trade away your top prospects in hopes of making a run at a 1-game wild card spot. While we can agree that some of the “top prospects” were much ballyhooed busts, the result is a minor league system that really offers no real help on the horizon in the areas of pitching, catching and outfield, while hoping to entice teams to part with good prospects via veterans like Musgrove, Kuhl and Adam Frazier. It’s almost unbelievable that the perfect storm of incompetent management and misguided scouts were in the same place at the same time
