Phillies Finalize Coaching Staff

By TC Zencka | January 11, 2021 at 2:43pm CDT

The Philadelphia Phillies announced their finalized coaching staff for the 2021 season today. Just a couple of changes have been made to manager Joe Girardi’s staff that had not been previously announced.

Dave Lundquist will take over as the bullpen coach after previously serving as an assistant pitching coach the past couple seasons. Mike Calitri gets promoted to the Major League coaching staff as the quality assurance coach. Calitri joined the Phillies in December of 2017 as an advance scouting manager after eight years working in the Indians’ organization. Bobby Meacham will also return for a second season as a coaching assistant, adds Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Caleb Cotham is the only newcomer from another organization. He joined the Phillies earlier this winter as the new pitching coach, presumably bringing with him a new-school approach after serving as an assistant pitching coach with the Reds. The other staff members include Greg Brodzinski and Bob Stumpo as bullpen catchers/catching coaches, Juan Castro as the infield coach, Joe Dillon as hitting coach, Paco Figueroa as the first base coach, Pedro Guerrero as assistant hitting coach, Dusty Wathan as the third base coach, and Rob Thomson will return as Girardi’s bench coach.

While I’m not at all excited about the Phillies 2021 season, I will say I really like the coaching staff. Hopefully they stick around for 2022. This team really needs some consistency. New coaches every year has to be difficult on these guys, and I expect some of that contributed to some of the late-season collapses.

Terrible coaching staff. The question is did the Phillies stink in 2020 because of the on-field coaching staff or in spite of it…Bryce Harper and the pitching staff should not accept all blame.

What about Mike Schmidt, Cliff Lee, Ryan Howard, or Chase Utley? Pay back the team that gave them millions and get some coaches that fans would know.

I don’t think any of those guys would have any interest coaching the Phillies right now.

Cliff Lee and Utley are worth hundreds of millions, they probably want to stay retired. Wouldn’t you, with those kinds of bucks ?

Maybe for Indians fans. Nationwide he’s most remembered as an Uncle Phillie

Yes, don’t hire the most qualified candidates. Instead, hire fan favorites who may not be interested or even have coaching experience to begin with

What is wrong with this woman? She’s asking about stuff that’s nobody’s business. “What do I do?”… Really, what do I do here? I should’ve written it down. “Qua” something, uh… qua… quar… quibo, qual…quir-quabity. Quabity assuance! No. No, no, no, no, but I’m getting close.

Quality assurance coaches make sure players abide by, worship, and speak nothing but algorithms and sabermetric stats. The moment sold old senile grandpa in scouting or the front office starts yapping about batting average, RBI, ERA, or pitcher wins, he gets demoted or assigned to “special assistant” which is the baseball equivalent of a Wal-Mart greeter.

The Phillies are sitting here balancing their check books and letting the rest of the division pass them waaaaay up!

If you judge a division by the offseason, the Phillies won the last 3 years. The game is not played on paper. That being said, I think the Braves and Mets made some great moves this year, and the Braves were already way above the Phillies talentwise. Now the Mets are too.

You have too agree, you don’t follow baseball enough to form an educated opinion. That’s why you come here and make these stupid unfunny posts instead of posting about baseball. Isn’t there a nice incel site that you could go post to?

I always thought one or both of the Maddox brothers would be great pitching coaches. I wonder where Tommy and Greg went? Greg was part of the Cubs organization and dropped off the map.

Sign any closer, 1 more solid BP pitcher, wait a bit and sign a SP (T. Walker , J. Paxton, J. Ordorrizi, anyone to take Velasquez spot), Bradley JR. And resign Didi and JT. If Dombrowski can do most of these moves, we may not have the sexy names, but we will surely compete in the NL East.

If the Cubs would take RHys, Stott, & Howard for Bryant. Now we are talking. Pipe dreaming on this last paragraph
