The Phillies announced Monday morning that they’ve designated outfielder Kyle Garlick for assignment. His spot on the 40-man roster will go to right-hander Archie Bradley, whose previously reported signing to a one-year deal has now been confirmed by the club.
Garlick, 29 next week, was acquired from the Dodgers last February in exchange for minor league left-hander Tyler Gilbert (whom the Dodgers lost to the D-backs in the minor league phase of this year’s Rule 5 Draft). Garlick spent most of the 2020 season at the Phillies’ alternate site in Lehigh Valley, though he did appear in a dozen games. He went just 3-for-22 with a double and seven strikeouts in that time, however.
Garlick showed a bit of promise with the Dodgers in 2019 when he made his big league debut and hit .250/.321/.521 with three long balls and four doubles in a small sample of 53 plate appearances. He’s a career .281/.332/.568 hitter in 645 Triple-A plate appearances and does have a minor league option remaining, so it’s not out of the question that a team that is particularly thin on upper-level outfield depth could place a claim on the right-handed hitter.
He’s not bad off the bench.
Good morning, @vonpurplehayes –
After the Kluber signing, Cashman said that he’s still looking for bullpen help.
I looked at the list of available relievers. What’s the deal with Jose Alvarez? His ’20 & his career numbers look pretty good.
Are there any rumors in re to the Phillies re-signing him? If not why would a team with noted issues in the pen not try & bring him back?
Merci.
he got the job done most of the time. I don’t think he’s a guy you bring in to be your closer but he’s an excellent set up man.
His stuff isn’t really great, hes more of a crafty control pitcher, which isn’t really in demand until all other pen options get exhausted. Tony Watson signing with the Giants a few years back in February is an example.
Phillies probably will look for more upside and look more into those kinds of pitchers at the end of the year. Ditto for Blake parker, who was good-ish for them.
Thanks @darkside & @brixton –
Cashman was pretty vague about specifics, of course. I’m hoping for a RH & a LH arm.
Numerous good lefties still available: the aforementioned Watson & Alvarez along with Wilson, Perez, & McGee. All guys who didn’t even make the top 50 free agent list.
Could see those guys falling in the 1-4 MM range. (Claudio signed for just over 1 mil for example)
Cash seems to definitely want another lefty. The last couple years he’s acquired: Lyons, Avilen, Brothers, Coulombe…I think I’m even forgetting one or two. Hoping he just goes ahead & signs an actual good one this time.
The reliever market is just so deep this year. All contenders should address holes – real or imagined – in their pens this winter.
@Ducky I like Alvarez. I think he’d be a good fit for the Yanks, but more of 6th or 7th inning guy.
That’s what I’m thinking.
Yanks need to buttress the bridge from starter to end game.
Thanks, fellas.
What’s this?! A polite conversation concerning baseball?!?! Don’t you guys know what site you’re on? This is MLBTR. Let’s get going with the derogatory comments to each other and proclamations that if you don’t see it MY way than YOU are an idiot! =)
I hear what you’re saying. But I’ve had tons of similar interactions over here.
It’s January.
The Giants are no longer playing football. I have to work maybe a couple hours a week. So I pretty much just want to go hunting everyday, talk some baseball around an actual wood burning stove in the man aerie, & read some decent books.
Ya know?
One of the really great things about MLBTR is getting to interact with all fan bases. Yes. Even the “Marlinsfanbase”.
DFA’d? That stinks!
He needed just a little more seasoning.
Lol, nice!!
Maybe the problem is he’s over seasoned!
The Phillies fans were already shedding too many tears last year and they had to do something about it!
I mean how are they going to keep the vampires away now?
The Blue Jays could use him in AAA.
Dombrowski just told Joe Giradi he can’t have Garlick…..reaction to come….
I think you snuck that in there quite nicely. Possibly too far under the radar though.
Mmmmm garlick…
AAAA
The outfielder’s agent, Guy Fieri, stated that Garlick was crushed.
You don’t mince your words, do ya?
If they only allowed GIFs here, that classic Goodfellas scene with Paulie preparing the razor-thin garlic slices for a pasta sauce.
Loved that scene!
He’s great on fries or hot wings, served with a side of bench bat.
I thought the Phillies hired Dombrowski to kick it up a notch.
If waived, Cubs should claim him.
Not worth a talent swap, though.
Maybe end up being a Giants fan favorite with Garlick fries.
Dodgers should claim him back!
Unfortunate. He was just starting to sprout.
Assuming Seranthony D goes 60 day IL, that leaves a single spot open for JT or Didi or whomever they bring in. Sounds like already time for a trade or two DD !
Gonna be interesting …Dohy, Maton,Moniak.. Arano ? Next four to go..
i think Quezada and Irvin are your last two guys on the 40 at the moment, and given you could get both through i could see either designated. In my mind the next bench bat to to might actually be Quinn. i could see him in a package for a lesser name RP with an option left.
Mets need AAA OF depth, and have space on the 40.
This will leave a bad taste in his mouth.
His 2020 numbers weren’t apeeling, he clearly was pressing at the plate.
Phillies imposing a new ban on Allium bats.
Alvarez is good when he isn’t taking liners off his junk. #ouch
This guy could start for the Bucs! Sign him, Ben!
Sign Kyle Orioles
This dude stinks
Garlick is a head case.
The Kiwoom Heroes of the KBO are definitely looking for a new foreign hitter that can actually hit since Addison Russell couldn’t hit well enough and Taylor Motter couldn’t hit water if he was thrown overboard from a boat/ship in the OCEAN, much less a baseball. Should be an improvement by default almost.
