3:49pm: Drury will earn $1.55MM if he makes it to the majors, Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweets. His deal could be worth up to $2.05MM.
8:49am: The Mets are signing Brandon Drury to a minor-league contract, reports Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic (Twitter link). As Rosenthal notes, that’ll reunite him with general manager Jared Porter, who was in the Diamondbacks’ front office during the tail end of Drury’s time in Arizona.
Drury has played in the big leagues in each of the past six seasons. After a pair of decent years with the D-Backs, he’s fallen off precipitously since going to the Yankees in the February 2018 three-team trade that sent Steven Souza Jr. to the desert. Over the past three seasons (spanning 582 plate appearances), Drury has just a .205/.254/.346 line with 16 home runs as a Yankee and Blue Jay. He was outrighted off Toronto’s 40-man roster in September.
Nevertheless, there’s little harm for the Mets in bringing Drury in as a depth option. He has plenty of experience at second and third base and in the corner outfield, with some intermittent time at shortstop and first base. The 28-year-old will look to earn a role as a right-handed hitting utility piece.
eli_b_wcl
They gave up all that prospect capital to trade for Lindor only to have him sit behind Brandon Drury in the depth chart this season.
depressedtribefan
lol well done
BobbyKidd1965
My thoughts exactly! 😉
Web
Heard Drury’s a decent hockey player too
NYYstateofmind
Well maybe he should try that, cause he can’t play baseball, he sucks!
Sheep8
Well, my guess is he has hit at least one grand slam more than you in professional baseball
its_happening
Your point?
whynot 2
Point being the guy is just a bitter yankeephile, who feels the need to degrade someone he doesn’t know in cheap attempt to feel better about his disappointing life
its_happening
Which means no point at all. Thank you for clarifying.
Twinsfan333
Your point?
Costanza1321
Haha! I like that….
whynot 2
That has to be quite a miserable existence you got going on there if that is how you get your enjoyment
Sheep8
He’s doesn’t suck if he’s made it to the highest professional level
its_happening
People can be called out for sucking at their role in any job. You could go to your local Walmart and tell someone they suck if they are.
Your original point sucked and so does your second. Patrons paying Drury big money to be bigtime garbage have a right to speak negatively.
99 Captain Judge
If Drury is your back-up then your set, and he can play multiple positions. Nice under the radar move for the Mets

No story about the ball doctoring scandal?
DarkSide830
remember when Kikuchi had the world’s biggest glob of pine tar under his cap and no one cared? the league doesnt care about stuff like this.
24TheKid
It’s funny how Yankee fans like to bring up Kikuchi but continue to completely overlook their own players.
pinstripes17
The Yankees didn’t do anything wrong, Kikuchi has nothing to do with the Yankees. Quit being a jealous hater, you sound like a crybaby.
joeyrocafella
Michael Pineda did tho… And he was a Yankee
24TheKid
Once again a Yankee fan is crying because another fan said something about them.
MoRivera 1999
Well you are obviously just a loser hater. A grown man with the emotional IQ of a 13-year-old, invested in hating…a baseball team.

Remember the show “sport science”? Well they proved that foreign substances do not work as well as people think.
dobsonel
Facts don’t back that up.
Rwm102600
I’m sorry….. Facts don’t back up proven science? Is….Is that what you just said?
dobsonel
This story broke last year. I guess I’m not shocked that it took ESPN this long to catch up since they clearly don’t care about baseball any longer. I am shocked at how many baseball fans apparently are hearing about this for the first time.
Robertowannabe
The thing that is new that brings this story back into view is a lawsuit filed by the maker of the substance claiming he was the only one named to make him a scapegoat and he brings out names and supposed evidence of who all were using.
Rsox
ESPN still covers sports?
king beas
I remember when the Yankees got him and everyone thought they got a steal. Not so cash man said he had his eye on him for a while…..he stinks
DarkSide830
Drury’s certainly got talent. if someone cam fix him they have a real player on their hands.
bluejaymatt 2
He’s really not a good player, he’s not even replacement level. He’s one of the worst players I’ve ever had the misfortune to watch play professional baseball.
SCHWING and A Miss
I’ve come in bye train with my son a handful of times over the years, Drury in the starting line-up was always a bummer for sure.
bluejaymatt 2
Watching over 500 PAs of utter futility was a miserable experience for me too, along with most Jays fans. Knowing that Atkins spend trade resources to get him was extra painful – a little nugget of poop on top of an awful tasting cake.
SCHWING and A Miss
Ha! Morales was a different type of nugget, no trade assets wasted, just an overpay followed bye 3 years of pure pain
Rsox
They salary dumped JA Happ to get him (and Billy McKinney). Not much trade resources were spent here
SCHWING and A Miss
True
DarkSide830
he was good in ‘Zona, but that was before the eye injury, which i think probably had an effect. no other way to see such a dramatic drop off.
bluejaymatt 2
Nope, he had the eye issue when he was in Arizona – he first mentioned it as a long term issue when he got traded to Yankees.
DarkSide830
it didn’t cause him to hit the IL until he was with the Yankees so clearly there was something different as far as severity after leaving Arizona.
kodion
He had (has?) concussion/migraine concerns. Not sure if that is fixable in his case …since he seemed sort of fragile in Toronto
DarkSide830
yeah, ill correct myself, it was migranes, not an eye issue.
For Love of the Game
I’ve had migraines, and they can affect your vision in addition to the excruciating pain.

BIG OOPSIE ALERT: latimes.com/sports/angels/story/2021-01-07/fired-a…
I think we all knew this, but this is still huge to actually come out in an article.
Balk
Crap like this is garbage for baseball. It reminds me how the Astros and Mlb treated the players differently then others. Players shouldn’t be immune from punishment for rule breaking. One person shouldn’t be destroyed when it was a group effort. Sad times for MLB
kodion
Back at, arguably, the peak of the PED days, the home-run battle between McGuire and Sosa “saved” baseball.
Maybe MLB need to stop “looking the other way” on this so there is a better chance for hitters to provide more of what people (normally) pay for?
Balk
Bonds, McGuire, Sosa DID save baseball. Bonds saved San Francisco alone from being sold. Peds are never a good idea, but Mlb and Hall of Fame shouldn’t punish past players for it. Piazza is sitting in the Hall and is a known peds user along with many others. It was an era, just like the juiced ball we’ve been seeing these past years.
Tom1968
Piazzas a known p.e.d. user? Have proof of that
Diggydugler
I dont know if it has been proven he used actual banned substances although he likely did, but he used PEDs that were not banned at the time by the MLB. Either way its all dumb, HOF is dumb.
Cosmo2
Piazza is a known PED user? Known how?
Orel Saxhiser
He admitted it. Google around a bit.

How come so many people can’t spell “McGwire” correctly?
The only thing McGuire got with in his hands was himself…

Harkins’ “crime” was giving it to opposing pitchers. This wasn’t exactly a secret. ” I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!”

Arrest the usual suspects!
Mrtwotone
Yeah that was the main cause of the increase in spin rate that mysteriously came out of nowhere for Verlander and Cole, Not analytics and coaching. This is my theory. Trevor Bauer was definitely using a foreign substance last season too which probably is the cause of his huge spin rate increase for last year. There is actually a really well made video about Bauer on YouTube that talks about it that is worth a watch

You can’t have any friends, I’m sure of it
George hubschman, roto imbeciles
Brandon Drury had a decent run for the D’Backs a lifetime ago. Who knows, these are sometimes the kinds of dopey signings that pay off. Not saying that it will but, on a minor league deal, it’s low risk/medium reward. The Yankees were also involved in a signing with their minor league deal for Jhoulys Chacin. At least Drury received the all-important invitation to ST.

Where is Lindor going to play now?
thebaseballfanatic
As a Jays fan…
I endured this guy being on the roster for almost three years. Every chance he was given, every thread of hope linking him to another opportunity on the MLB roster, was pain. Seeing him go onto the diamond and provide literally no value pained my soul. When him and Font were ousted I was so,so,so,so happy. Say what you want about the eye issues… but let’s face it.
He is… very bad,

bluejays92
Glad that he’s gone, but I wish him the best. He did seem like he was trying and he made some good plays defensively. Watching him take at-bats was painful, however.
MetsFan22
I still wouldn’t rule out springer. But I wouldn’t bet on it.
For Love of the Game
Drury doesn’t preclude signing Springer. Trading for Lindor and Carrasco might reduce the chances of signing Springer.
MetsFan22
No I agree lol. I should wrote this on the other article. I was talking about the Lindor deal.
Mrtwotone
I don’t think the Mets should give up the years and money it would take for Springer. I think Jackie Bradley Jr would be a good option. The Mets need a defender in CF that can cover some range if Dominic Smith is going to be in LF. He will be a lot cheaper and would probably take a 1 or 2 year deal and make some incredible defensive plays.
MetsFan22
Yup. I think it also depends on if the DH will come too. But I’d be fine with any CF now that we have Lindor.
Mrtwotone
I’ll give it to you man, the Mets made an incredible move with that trade and killed two birds with one stone by addressing the need of a big bat with amazing defense and a legit proven pitcher who is a legit #2 starter. I still see them adding a Paxton or an odorizzi to the pitching staff and a Bradley or Kiermier for center field. They are ready to complete, I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong. The braves need to add Ozuna or Brantley and bring back Melancon or Greene or go and get Brad Hand or Archie Bradley this off-season to fill the hole of the players that left.
MetsFan22
Thank you. And as a Mets fan I’m still very scared of the Braves. They aren’t going anywhere. We are the ones that have to prove that we could pass you this year not the other way around.
Mrtwotone
I know it sounds weird but I enjoy the competition and rivalry. For me it makes it more fun when you got good teams to go up against. The Mets got a deep lineup now. When you add a defensive center fielder it will only make them better. I just hope the braves put Pache in centerfield opening day cause I Inciarte is broken. He’s a Hell of a guy but he has gone downhill fast.
Ma4170
I don’t know though, if the Mets did sign springer, that offense would be very good, and the OF defense would turn into well above average… I know it would eat up their remaining cap space, but I feel like it would make them extremely formidable
Superstar Car Wash
I wonder how the increased scrutiny with foreign substances is going to impact Gerrit Cole with the sabermetrics and algorithms in 2021!

I never understood why the BJs traded Happ for him. I understand trading Happ, But when two move you in a matter of a few months, and the dude has a .538 OPS, there might be a reason he is being moved.

Unrelated, to Trade Rumors app administrators: is there any way you can stop the posting of audio/video Google Ads? They’re a nuisance as they kill the audio from music streaming apps.

I could see Drury making the team as a utility player. Not a terrible depth signing

He and Lindor will battle it out for the shortstop position.

Drury is collateral if JD Davis gets traded, which I think is very likely at this point.

Drury was never the same after the injury and all the meds.
