The Mets and outfielder Michael Conforto have avoided arbitration with a $12.25MM settlement, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Conforto is a client of the Boras corporation.
Conforto, soon to turn 28, has been a terrific offensive performer since he debuted in 2015, but he found another gear last season. Across 233 plate appearances, Conforto slashed .322/.412/.515 with nine home runs. Although he did benefit from a .412 batting average on balls in play, Conforto’s 157 wRC+ was nevertheless good for the seventh-highest mark in the National League.
The upcoming season could be the last as a Met for Conforto, who’s slated to reach free agency next winter. But Conforto has expressed interest in a contract extension in the past, and team president Sandy Alderson said in November he expects to “broach” the topic of a new deal this offseason.

Extend this man.

That’s what she said

LMAO
LaFlamaBlanca
Does this mean Mets are gonna trade Brandon Nimmo???
rct
Is this sarcasm? If is isn’t, no. It does not mean that.

Nice salary bump for Conforto. Good hitter, but he’s more of a .250ish batter with a decent eye who benefited from a stratospheric BABiP in the shortened season. Below-average glove like all the Mets OFers that doesn’t look to improve as he ages. He’d benefit once the NL adopts the DH. He’s a Boras client, so it’s likely he’s going to test free agency next year, but if Cohen offers a nice deal to buy him out now he should grab it. Can’t rule out a trade either if the Mets land Springer and Nimmo gets shifted to a corner.

He’s really not that bad of a fielder when he’s playing LF/RF. He’s only ranked as a well below average fielder In CF.
Metsies
Agreed but it did look like he made some other adjustments last year. He definitely attempted to pull the ball less and looked like he was going to all fields like he did in his first year or two in the bigs. BABIP was high but it looks like he might get out of that .250 nonsense for good
IjustloveBaseball
Maybe it’s due to being on the West Coast, but Conforto seems like one of the most underrated offensive players in the game. He’s got pop, patience and a good eye, and has shown flashes of hitting for average. While I don’t think he’ll replicate his 2020 numbers moving forward, would a .280/.375/.500 slash line be out of the question?
jshorr
He’s streaky and outside of one season doesn’t hit for average. He’s got a lot to prove still before getting a huge contract. In my opinion anyway. If he hit .280 30 HR 90RBI every year for a few years he’d be deserving of a big extension.

5 year 95 million extension seems fair
mlbnyyfan
Indians GM should be fired for not insisting on him being in the Lindor deal
ExileInLA 2
Why? One year and he’s gone. Plus, Mets wouldn’t have given Gimenez and the kids AND Conforto – if they would have traded him at all.
mlbnyyfan
Mets still gave up nothing of any serious value. Gimenez no where near the player of Lindor.

Conforto is a New York kid, I can’t imagine him playing anywhere but NY. Mets should sign him long term.
jim stem
I will correct myself. He’s from Oregon. I could have sworn he was born and raised in NY. My bad.
Hantoneenee
I can see why you thought that.
@Jim Stern Do you think he’ll get extended? I’m not optimistic because Scott Boras is his agent and I feel like Boras will ask for the moon and the stars in $’s and years for MC.
stephenooch
OMG. Don’t judge me, but… can we please trade this guy for a pitcher already? I’m happy that a future Boras malcontent has value. Then trade him, stock the farm and sign springer!
jshorr
NO, he has not been a “terrific” offensive performer. He has one all-star season where he slumped in the second half. The next two years he hit in the .240’s and .250’s. He’s streaky and when he’s off he’s an automatic out. He is not worthy of a long-term extension. Maybe 3-4 years 15 million per year or so. More is foolishness. Don’t pay someone on potential Give a mega contract to someone who will produce results every year..
