The Mets have claimed left-hander Stephen Tarpley off waivers from the division-rival Marlins, Mike Puma of the New York Post tweets. The Marlins designated Tarpley for assignment last week.
Tarpley entered the majors as a third-round pick of the Orioles in 2013, but he never suited up for them. Instead, Tarpley has pitched for the Yankees and Marlins, with whom he has combined for a 6.65 ERA with a 27.2 percent strikeout rate and a 13.6 percent walk rate over 44 2/3 frames. He struggled mightily last year during his lone season as a Marlin, allowing 11 earned runs in as many innings and issuing eight walks. The 27-year-old has, however, managed a stingy 2.88 ERA across 65 2/3 Triple-A innings.
While Tarpley hasn’t exactly thrived at the game’s highest level, the Mets are taking a low-risk chance that he’ll at least provide useful depth. Notably, the club has an obvious need for left-handers relievers, as Daniel Zamora is the only southpaw bullpen option on its 40-man roster.

Save some for the rest of us.

Jays fans were already getting their worldly affairs in order. Now this news………
yankees7448
Nice pickup. Cheap and he’s got decent upside.
Robertowannabe
LOL! That was the rep on him when the Pirates got him in a trade for Travis Snider. The PTBNL in that deal was Stephen Brault. He always looked promising but never seemed to put it all together for any length of time.
MarlinsFanBase
LOL! I think I said the same thing last year when the Marlins grabbed him.
The guy has tools, but can’t find the strikezone.
I’m sure Brandon Nimmo is upset. Anytime a guy that can’t find the strikezone joins the Mets, that’s one less of those he can pad his OBP stats against.
VonPurpleHayes
This comment is perfect. The NL East knowledge is deep.
MarlinsFanBase
I know…right? It seems that all of us Marlins, Nats, Braves, and Phillies fans know Nimmo and Tarpley well. One prays to not give up walks when he steps on the mound. The other prays for walks when he steps up to the plate.
alc47
Honestly at this point your hate for Nimmo
Is just pathetic. If Nimmo was on the Marlins in 2020 he would’ve been 1st in avg, 1st in runs, 1st in obp, 1st in slg, 1st in ops, T-1 in hits, T-3 in 2b, 1st in 3B & 1st in BB. So it’s either Nimmo is actually pretty decent at baseball or your team just flat out sucks. Which one is it ?
elscorchot
It’s that Nimmo still sucks. Get really mad and respond, again. I enjoyed the last one.
Metsies
Nimmo way more than a “walk no hit” guy. Look at his OPS over the past three years. Never going to hit .290 but can drive the ball really well for someone who prioritizes patience
MarlinsFanBase
Wrong on batting average; wrong in slugging.. Tied for3rd in 2Bs with someone who had 50 less ABs and far less speed (Garrett Cooper). He was driven in for his runs (not his creation). Tied in OPS. Would have been one of our worst baserunners, even behind the guys he’s actually faster than. He would have been one of our worst defensive players. And nobody questions his OBP because our guys actually swing at the ball. And let’s not forget that 2020 was a year when he played above his stats, mostly after his team was trending down, and in a season where they finished in last with him as the leadoff hitter while the Marlins made the playoffs and advanced past the first round.
Again, when you suck in most areas, you suck…period.
MarlinsFanBase
And look at that lovely batting average to go with it. I bet you feel that Dave Kingman was more than an “all or nothing” guy too.
alc47
I wasn’t wrong about anything I said lol among those who qualified my man. You’re wrong again but thanks for playing!
andremets
Do you honestly think Nimmo sucks? Really? Dude is an OBP monster and would be the 3-hitter on your Marlins. He’s a very valuable player and a rare commodity. I seriously hope you are joking.
MarlinsFanBase
Oh, so you’re going to hold it against those players that they were down with COVID just to suit your arguments.
How do you convince yourself to ignore that your great Nimmo led his team to last place, even behind the Marlins team that played half of their season with replacement players and rookies due to the outbreak?
Cosmo2
Now you’re judging an individual player based on his team’s record? You’re being beyond ridiculous. Do you know how any of this works?
all in the suit that you wear
Yes. He is still young and may still figure things out.
MarlinsFanBase
This says it all

DarkSide830
who are Lindor and Cookie? ive only heard of Drury and Tarpley. nice to see the Mets finally get their priorities straight.
Mrtwotone
I know right? Drury is clearly the best out of all of them and you can’t tell me otherwise
mrmojorisin 2
I believe the Mets do have Jerry Blevins, don’t they?
Mrtwotone
Yes sir
Bill M
But Blevins signed a minors deal, so he’s not on the 40 man roster
MetsFan22
The guy is probably so happy right now!
MarlinsFanBase
Why would Tarpley be happy about being let go from a playoff team to join the last place team?
I sure as heck Nimmo isn’t happy either because this is one less wild pitcher he can pad his OBP stat against.
MetsFan22
Do you really believe that if a player wants to win this year, he’ll go to the Marlins instead of the Mets?
MarlinsFanBase
Last I checked, Tarpley didn’t have a choice.. He was claimed by the Mets – not signed as a free agent.
MetsFan22
You didn’t answer my question. One team is going to lose 90+ and it’s not the mets.
elscorchot
We have a psychic in the house. Oh wait. He said same bs last year.
the14thdoctor
The same stupid comment twice in this topic. High OBP is a *great* thing, you nitwit. Bugger off and post under the Marlins news items. You and their 5 other fans will be happy to have you.
KermitJagger
One half of the return for Travis Snider, the other being Steven Brault. Back when it seemed like every trade the Bucs made was a decent one.
Robertowannabe
They trade Snider then pick him back up later in the year after the O’s released him. Same thing happened when they traded McClouth for Charlie Morton, Jeff Locke and Gorkys Hernandez and preceded to get McClouth back after Atlanta let him go 2 yrs later. Gorkys was traded and resigned later too.,
top jimmy
Nice pickup. I like his potential as a reliever. He’s already the best lefty in their bullpen.
C-Daddy
Good insurance in the event that they acquired Lindor to be a left-handed relief pitcher.
Robertowannabe
Hey, Lindor is a switch hitter so maybe he is ambidextrous too. He does have a strong arm so…… 🙂
MarlinsFanBase
Is he amphibious too?
pjmcnu
Somebody’s gotta pitch for Syracuse.
PiratesFan1981
So much for Pirates claiming him
MarlinsFanBase
I think you all are not understanding why the Mets grabbed Tarpley. He’s being brought in to be Brandon Nimmo’s personal batting practice pitcher. Nimmo wants to keep getting better at taking pitches until he can lead MLB in OBP since he brings nothing else to the table.
MetsFan22
I love how you penalize Nimmo for having one of the best eyes in baseball. This is comical lol.
MarlinsFanBase
I penalize him because he sucks on defense; sucks when he swings the bat; and despite having decent speed, sucks at base running. When you suck at mostly everything, and you’re one thing to boast about is how you don’t swing at pitches, you’re not a good player…period!
How does a guy suck at most things and still get looked on as a good player? Only in Metsland!
MarlinsFanBase
Oh, and by the way, if he had “one of the best eyes in baseball”, he would have a better batting average because his hand/eye coordination would help him be able to level up more pitches and with getting more torque on his contact, especially with his size and frame.
You talk about comical? You not knowing that is comical. I bet you don’t even realize why.
jdgoat
Hey, at least we can all agree that Nimmo will never be no Harold Ramirez, right!
MarlinsFanBase
Agreed!
MetsFan22
Well he doesn’t suck at defense. He is really a LF not a CF. And he is a good hitter. In fact he is better than everyone on the marlins at hitting. So good luck next year!
the14thdoctor
He had a 146 OPS+ you Nimmo-obsessed weirdo. Go focus on your own teams players. I realize that ain’t a lot of fun, but leave these nice people alone.
Cosmo2
Nimmo is widely recognized as a valuable hitter due to his on base skills. You’re in the minority with your opinion here, MarlinsFan. You’re outdated views on walks are absurd. And you’re just making stuff up at this point. Nimmo doesn’t have a good eye despite his high walk rate because absurd reason you just invented? You should actually research this stuff before you comment. Not a single paid analyst or scout would agree with the old school nonsense you keep spouting.
Metsies
Nimmo way more than a “walk no hit” guy. Look at his OPS over the past three years. Never going to hit .290 but can drive the ball really well for someone who prioritizes patience
danenati
Chasen Shreve should’ve had a contract from the Mets by now too. He was a nice surprise for us.
whyhayzee
Fun fact: Nimmo’s lifetime OPS is 50 points higher than DJLM, an absolute lock unanimous first ballot hall of famer OR the most overrated player in the history of baseball. Your choice. Because if Nimmo sucks than DJLM is a freaking joke. Get over yourselves.
MarlinsFanBase
Can they both be overrated? We’re talking about players who are Mets and Yankees here. Overrated comes with the territory.
Bill M
Congratulations for breaking the record on the amount of trolling on a single thread
