The Angels were busy earlier this offseason in acquiring a pair of relievers – Raisel Iglesias and Alex Claudio – as well as shortstop Jose Iglesias, but things have slowed to a crawl for the team in recent weeks. It’s not for lack of effort by new general manager Perry Minasian, who hopes Major League Baseball’s glacial offseason picks up the pace. “It’s been a different offseason,” Minasian said on Monday, per Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. “It seems like there’s been less activity. We’ve been one of the more active teams and it seems like we haven’t done anything in a year.”
“I have been as active as I can be,” added Minasian, who still intends to address the team’s starting rotation, according to Fletcher. So far, the Angels haven’t been able to strengthen that group, though Minasian has been working on it. Ideally, the Angels will land the top free agent available – Southern California native and reigning NL Cy Young-winning right-hander Trevor Bauer – and Fletcher writes the two sides figure to have “mutual interest.” It’s unclear how serious that interest is on either side, however, Fletcher notes.
Here’s more on the Angels…
- Beyond upgrading his team’s rotation, Minasian said (via Fletcher) he’s on the hunt for depth at catcher and in the outfield. That isn’t surprising in either case, particularly behind the plate. The Angels’ only 40-man catchers are Max Stassi and Anthony Bemboom (Stassi’s on the mend from September hip surgery), and the team has shown interest this month in acquiring the Cubs’ Willson Contreras. Meanwhile, aside from center fielder Mike Trout, the outfield is something of a question mark. Justin Upton and Jo Adell had difficult years in 2020, while Taylor Ward failed to hit a home run in 102 plate appearances (though his overall numbers were still respectable). Jared Walsh had a brilliant year with the bat, but he saw little time in the outfield.
- The Angels announced Monday that Bruce Hines will serve as their first base coach and outfield instructor in 2021. He’s replacing Jesus Feliciano, who left the team for personal reasons. There is already a great deal of familiarity between the franchise and Hines, as he previously combined for 23 years with the Angels in various scouting and coaching roles. That included a stint as their first base coach in 1991.

I think the Angels will be just fine keeping or not keeping the rally monkey. The owner is another story. As long as he is owner, I expect many more years of futility and missed playoffs. Moreno has turned our team into the Clippers of baseball.

He signed last year, did not see that. Did I miss Bauer signing with halos?
dan55
I would like to see the Angels trade Adell for one of Zac Gallen, Zack Plesac, or Luis Castillo. I think that would be a good trade that could help them fix their rotation with a cheap, controllable ace. Bauer is too expensive and none of the other available free agent pitchers have the potential to be aces, so they need to make a trade.
Halo11Fan
Are you an Angel fan? The Angels revamped Adell’s swing last year. He was a work in progress.
They’ve done that with Ohtani, Marsh, Adams, Adell and I think Walsh. They’d be fools to trade him.
californiaangels
have you ever seen a guy so lost at the plate ? NO. I know its early , I’ve seen many minor league and spring back field games of him, I promise you the hit tool on him is much lower then reported . his defences is atrocious!
Marsh IMO just has everything above average and has a poor mans Yelich in his future with a chance at much more.
1984wasntamanual
His hit tool on fangraphs is 30/45, are you saying it’s lower than that?
Halo11Fan
Yes, Tim Salmon, 1992.

He didn’t chase, he didn’t look lost to me. He made a quick rise in the minor leagues, they changed his swing to get more lift, and he struggled.
If they trade him after lowering his value, the organization is truly lost. They need let him adjust.
prov356
CA – Adell was lost on defense and at the plate in his rookie 2020 season. That’s not to say Halo11 is wrong. I think Adell will be a good player, not a superstar though, The point is, the Angels need to compete now. Adell can’t contribute what we need to win now, which is pitching.
bkbk
Youre wrong and people should probably throw walks at you.
Halo11Fan
He looked awful defensively. I will agree with that.
And I’m wrong? Wrong about what? Did I ever say he’ll be a superstar? Ever? I think he’ll make a few All-Star teams. If I’m wrong about something, it’s probably be better to find out what I’m wrong about.
Win now? I’ll disagree with that philosophy the vast majority of the time.

The Angels are my favorite AL team, but I don’t pay as much attention to them as I do to my Padres. From what I’ve seen, the Angels have a solid group of starting pitchers, but they desperately need an ace if they want to go far in the playoffs. Adell may be good in the future, but he can’t contribute very much right now.
Trading Adell for an elite starting pitcher would be like the Padres trading Luis Patino for Blake Snell – Patino will most likely turn into a great pitcher someday, but he isn’t very good right now and the Padres were better off using him to get a guy who can maximize their chances of winning a championship.
lowtalker1
Lol no. They need more than that. When it’s clear and evident that they need pitching, the fans cry out they need offense.
SoCalADRL
As an Angel fan, I understand they’ve revamped his swing and he may prove to be a future all star, cornerstone but may not be. Just like all prospects, nothing is for sure. This team spend almost a half billion on two guys in the prime of their careers to win now and that’s what they need to do. You can’t cont be in this place of rebuilding while trying to compete. It doesn’t work. If they have the chance to land a Castillo, German type, young cost controlled pitcher they should do it. It’ll allow them to also sign some bullpen help and maybe another starter like Tanaka or get Bauer as well and convince him to have a back loaded contract. Point is, they need high end pitching bad and they need it now.
Angels & NL West
Dan, I think you make a good point. I like Adell, and I’m not giving up on him, but the Angels need a young, controllable Ace-like SP. More so than a OF. Especially when you have Marsh waiting in the wings. You need to give up something of value to get a SP like Gallen, Castillo, etc.
I would not recommend signing Bauer to an inflated contract coming off a career year.
angels1961
I agree Bauer cost too much and chemistry in clubhouse could be bad. Do not think he gets along with Callaway.
Loling @ you
@dan55 your not wrong, angels need 2 quality arms and an every day catcher just to compete. In my opinion Marsh’s potential waiting in the wings makes it easier to trade adell for pitching. I’d rather trade adell for Hendricks and Contreras as it kills 2 birds with 1 stone and gives you flexibility to add bauer or someone else next season.
Halo11Fan
No mention of adding to the bullpen?
As soon as they added Claudio, that’s exactly what i feared might happen. Claudio is not the answer to anything.
This team lost last year because it’s pen was terrible, they have added one piece, Iglesias. they should add two more. I’m now not even sure they’ll add one more.

If they didn’t have the three batter rule, I’m fine with Claudio, but they have the three batter rule and RH kill him. .305 lifetime batting average.
He’s not the pitcher I want to see enter the game. Maybe he can get you an out a game when he enters the game to get one LH out, if the right situations presents itself.
That’s not much of a bullpen piece.
Cap & Crunch
Claudios more of an inn eater than a lefty specialist –
I think you will actually quite enjoy him this year if you watch every game on Tv- He will do anything you ask and be ready to do the same the next day
The stats will never jump off the page but hes a valuable commodity imo especially to a team like the Angels who have Constantly overworked the pen the last couple of yrs – (* Yall lookin to kill Buttery already)
Halo11Fan
He hasn’t had an ERA below four since 2017.. He doesn’t get out RH batters.
So he’s a mop up guy who will eat innings?
I don’t want to kill Buttrey. The Angels do not have a single RP who was good in 2019 and 2020. They try to figure it out on the fly EVERY year, and every year they throw away several games in April and May trying to figure it out.
They don’t have five games to throw away trying to figure it out in 2021.
Cap & Crunch
Like I said, Im sure you watch most Angel games, we will circle back next year and discuss his value to the team then –
If your bars sub 4 for a sub 2 mill guy these days I dont know what to tell ya, its not 1969

Halo11Fan

It’s more than fair to say we’ll see. I have seen the Angels bungle their bullpen for a decade plus.
I don’t have anything against Claudio, I have something against not having a setup man and a guy who can pitch the 7th.
The Angels are missing those two positions.

angels1961
Claudio is a nice piece that will help, more addition to pen coming. I hope they bring Petit back.
Halo11Fan
Claudio is not a nice piece. He’s fodder.
That’s an example of why this bullpen is so bad, people overvalue the pitchers.
Your 7th, 8th and 9th inning guys are as important as any single position on the team. Our 7th, 8th, and 9th inning guys have to be found every year and it has taken six weeks to two months to find these guys. By then, the Angels are always underwater.
They find pitchers, they think they have the problem solved, only to have to build the pen on the fly the following year.
The bullpen is not an afterthought.
1984wasntamanual
Remaining needs…same as they’ve been for 3(?) years.
prov356
dan55 – I think Adell has been a bit overhyped and I would not be sad to see him traded for a controllable rotation arm or two. I think we need to be serious about acquiring Bauer also. If we add Bauer and a couple of low cost starters who have shown potential, we should be solid in the rotation. Add another BP piece or two, a catcher, and decide who owns RF and LF.
Upton has been a disappointment. In a perfect world, we find a trade partner to dump him on, maybe packaged in an Adell for pitching scenario.
dan55
It would be great if you could trade Upton, though I’m not sure which team would want him in the current financial climate.
My biggest problem with the Angels going after Bauer is that Bauer will probably cost something around $30 million/year, and the Angels have too many needs on their team to be able to spend that much money on a starting pitcher. Getting someone like Luis Castillo would still enable the team to spend money on some of their other problems.
prov356
We got lucky with Cozart. I’m hoping we can do something similar with Upton. Losing him would free up salary to be more able to afford a $30m AAV for Bauer.
Halo11Fan
We got lucky with Cozart?
The Angels gave up a number one pick and saved about five million dollars.
it was one of the dumbest moves in years.

CJB… Wrong. Every salary was prorated. It cost the Giants that because they cut him. The Angels basically saved five million dollars.
GeoKaplan
Somehow, this needs to be mentioned once a week: Upton has a full NTC. The reason is his family is in Phoenix and he has no desire to play further from home than Southern California. He isn’t accepting a trade anywhere, and with his contract without vesting years there is no sweetener to offer. He isn’t being traded, anywhere.
Halo11Fan
This needs to be mentioned as well.
From Aug 28th to the end of the season. 303/398/605.

Now it’s Adell they want to trade. Next year it will be Adams.
dan55
I don’t think anyone has given up on Adell. The main issue with Adell is that he is not good enough to play in MLB right now, and the Angels need to do everything they can to win while Trout and Rendon are still in their primes. Adell does not help them win right now. Trading him for an elite starting pitcher would help that team a lot more. Adell will be fine once he gets more time in the minor leagues.

Angels blew it by not giving Sugano a decent offer.
He had the best quality/affordability ratio out there.
With their budget, they need to get 2 decent mid rotation guys and lean on their offense.
Sugano is top/mid level… he would have been perfect.
If they get 1 top level guy like Bauer for 30 mil, it shows they have learned absolutely nothing from their past failures.
Bullpen arms can be traded for. They can’t afford weakening the farm for decent starting pitching. They should let Bemboom and Graterol compete in spring training while signing Robinson Chirinos (for no more than 2 mil) to help teach them both better defensive play while providing a solid veteran presence. Eventually Stassi will get recover from surgery and be thrown in the mix as well.
But dang, with this team who knows? They are likely to sign Realmuto and say hey its all good now, right?!
Cap & Crunch
I dont think the Angels need any more 3/4 starters (what I view Sugano)
Id rather see them trade for an ace (Snell Cookie or Yu woulda been nice) then work the Rp arms – (Trienan and May woulda been nice)
Theres still a lotta hay to be made out there you just have to hope they have the initiative after the pandemic (unclear atm)
troutfishing
I see.
Well, people thought Yu Darvish, Kuroda, Maeda, Iwakuma and Tanaka were all 3-4 guys at best because they were coming “unproven” from Japan. In the end, they all proved more than capable of being number 2 starters with absolute gems being thrown in from time to time. Look at how incredible Maeda was last year. Look at how little he gets paid compared to others of his quality.
The only guy on that list who was paid too much was Tanaka. But of course, it was a Yankee contract.
trout27
What would the Angels do with another Japanese pitcher, go with a seven man rotation? If they want a quick fix they would need to overpay for Bauer, trade highly rated prospects for Castillo and hope Ohtani can pitch at a high level while hitting like 2018. They have to stop chasing the quick fix for Trout and concentrate on builging a winning Organization first. The vest way to get TOR pitchers is to draft and develop your own.
troutfishing
trout27 –
I am not quite sure how “another Japanese pitcher” leads to a 7 man rotation.
As for Bauer, he will probably do great for another year or two. My problem is how much he is looking to command per year. 30+ mil and how that fits with the needs of the team.
The reason I think picking up 2 solid, consistent 2-3 guys is it puts less reliance/pressure on Canning, Barria, and Sandoval.
All three of those guys might make great bullpen arms.
They also serve as someone to go to if a main starter gets hurt.
All three really do have great potential.
Something like,
Bundy
(Tanaka) (Odorizzi) (Porcello) (Walker) (Paxton) (etc…)
(Tanaka) (Odorizzi) (Porcello) (Walker) (Paxton) (etc…)
Heany
Ohtani
(Canning, Sandoval, Barria) -> 2 to bullpen
It’s makes fewer bullpen arms that need to be signed or trader for and gives more moderate reliability to great offensive team.
It’s cost effective, has high upside, doesn’t hurt the farm and likely not stuck with long contracts.
I am worried Bauer may regress back to a number 2-3 guy. What type of contract will the Angels be stuck with then?
Castillo would be an awesome pickup, but it’s hard to see the Angels not losing the little wealth they have in the minors.
But hey, if Arte wants to dish out the cash for Bauer and Minasian can pull off a decent trade for Castillo… then,
Bauer
Castillo
Bundy
Heany
Ohtani
(Canning, Sandoval, Barria) -> 2 to bullpen
That would be pretty solid too man. Just if that plan crashes… its gonna burn for a long long time.
Tim Stewart
I think Sugano would have been a great move for the Angels. look how impressive his stats are . So consistently great and only one year with injuries(Still had an ERA under 4). He has done well against Good competition (I believe a postseason no hitter.) He dominated all star level MLB players at the WBC (0 earned runs). He gives innings and will be more stretched out than any MLB pitcher. He may not have the fastball in the upper 90s but he has great control and strong spin rates.
The Angels need someone that can give innings especially with the season we had in 2020.
HalosHeavenJJ
Nice call on Chirinos. I was really hoping for Casili. Really hoping. Surprised the Angels didn’t beat that offer from the Giants. Unless he just really wanted to play back home.
Vizionaire
remember ohtani went one of the teams without any japanese players? i think it still stands. if the angels sign a japanese player younger than he is it might be o.k. what i’m saying is japanese have such a different customs than we have and he may not want to spend useless time worrying about them.
HalosHeavenJJ
Ohtani and Sugano were teammates in Japan. I do still think Tanaka makes sense here.
Anybody with a working pitching arm.
troutfishing
I wouldn’t worry about them being petty and wanting to be the only Japanese player on the team.
I agree with HalosHeaven, Tanaka would be a good fit. He might even be able to give Ohtani some good advice as he recovers from injury and faced with living up to high expectations. Ohtani is still young and Tanaka has been around for 7+ years and felt the pressure of a Yankee fan base.
I also think Odorizzi, and Porcello would be reliable options.
Walker and Paxton would be excellent bounce back candidates.
Alex Wood I believe has a lot of potential if he moves to the back end of a bullpen.
Tim Stewart
I think you have the pitchers mixed up. Sugano was/is with the Giants. Ohtani with the Fighters. I am not sure but I think the pitcher that signed with Texas was with the Fighters .
Casey F'n Ryback
“they need to get 2 decent mid rotation guys and lean on their offense.”
No. You go get filthy aces. Trade Adell and anyone else not named Mike Trout, who will get you filthy aces. It’s not hard. Their offense will be just fine without him. Filthy. Stinkin. Aces.
ron cey
maybe Perry is dead set on Bauer and continues to wait?
I’m not so sure I like him for the Halos though. as a player yes but he sounds like someone who might also bring some bad vibes to team. idk
I am not opposed to trading a couple good prospects for a Castillo or sonny Gray or Kyle Hendricks . at this point it could be anyone for a good arm. I would prefer to keep Fletcher no matter what. marsh plus or adell plus is all I can see happening though if we can’t get ace via free agency.

“I have been as active as I can be,” added Minasian, who still intends to address the team’s starting rotation, according to Fletcher.” What does this even mean? “Minasian is on line two again. This f***** guy, send him to my voicemail!”
Halo11Fan
I agree with what fangraphs said about the Angels pitching.
“The Angels rotation is not in particularly bad shape, though it could use some spice at the top and some depth at the bottom.”
They need to add a starter. However, what they also need to do is add at least one more bullpen arm.
HalosHeavenJJ
For once we agree. I think Callaway’s adjustments were just starting to show the last month last year. He didn’t get a normal spring training with these guys.
That said there are legitimate durability issues with Heaney and Canning and I wouldn’t count on Ohtani for more than 100 innings.
Still think one starter comes via trade and one via free agency. Just don’t know which end. Still think at least one of the massive pile of relievers gets brought in.
Evan Siggson
Trading for Musgrove while signing Odorizzi along with trading for Contreras and adding a RP like Hand or Colome would still be an excellent off-season. Got the feeling Angels want Bauer but can’t wait around forever and risk everyone else get acquired.
Halo11Fan
The Angels don’t have a lot of ammunition for trading. The only Angel prospect who might be overvalued is Marsh.
Adell and Adams are undervalued right now. They can’t trade Detmers.
I don’t see how they can work out an equitable deal for the players you are mentioning.
HalosHeavenJJ
Realistic trade targets: Gray, Musgrove. Less realistic: Plesac.
Still far more than enough bullpen arms to assemble a meh rotation and deep bullpen, too.
Vizionaire
i will call it a winner if they trade for musgrove and spend the rest on bullpen arms.
angelsince61
So far it would appear that once again Angel fans have been fed empty promises. The promise of making the Angels a contender this year has so far failed to materialize. “It could happen.” There’s that line from Angels in the Outfield. The remake, not the original.
It’s been obvious for a while that we need an upgrade in the starting rotation and a couple of more good arms in the bullpen in order to make it into contender status. Raisel Iglesias was a good start, but only fills the spot for one year unless we are able to extend him. Jose Iglesias was an OK pickup if we are planning to really go after someone in the shortstop FA class for next year. Alex Claudio really isn’t one of the arms we need to fill in the bullpen. Both of the latter only make sense if you are trying to save money to use to build up the rotation and bullpen this year.
Each year I hope ownership keeps their promise and gives the fans what they deserve and what Mike Trout deserves; a team that can put us back in the playoffs. But each year they seem confused at what their ultimate goal is: Build up or rebuild. They seem noncommittal to either and satisfied to continue to tread water.
We have $36.2 million left before we reach reach the CBT and we know that ownership will refuse to go over that amount. So we wait for a few more words that will give us hope for this year.
But let’s be honest. The fans have the heart. The players have the heart. God knows Joe Maddon has the heart. But the bigger question is, does ownership have the heart. Or maybe I mixed up the words “heart” and “intestinal fortitude.”
Just my opinions, But after supporting this team for 60 years, I’m entitled to a few.
Vizionaire
i think there was an agreement among teams to freeze out the free agents.
HalosHeavenJJ
Let’s see, it is mid January and NL teams don’t know for sure if there will be a DH, nobody knows if fans will be allowed or in what numbers. The owners suspended revenue sharing last year, but will they this year?
So it is pretty much impossible to set a budget and half the league knows not to expect to have a DH, but that it still might happen.
On top of that there’s a ton of redundancy in the players. Three shortstops with shortcomings, no need to set the market for one. Same with a plethora of mid to back end starters and relief arms.
And once we get through whatever this year is, the CBA expires!
I don’t think the owners needed to get together this year. A pandemic plus a complete failure of leadership plus a meh free agent class add up to little activity.
1984wasntamanual
I think it has more to do with the fact that the top free agents haven’t signed yet. If you’re in on any of them, you’re going to wait to see where they go before signing anyone else for that position and you may also hold off on signing anyone because you don’t know how much money you’ll have.
Thurman8er
“As active as I can be” means “Until we know about Bauer, there’s only so much I can do.”

angels have only $30 mil to spend and that is before arbitration. they will talk about bauer but will go lower. as usual.
Sealbeach Comber
Let’s say we get Bauer. Do you really think one pitcher is going to turn the team around from a .433 winning percentage and missing the playoffs despite the expanded playoff field?
SwingtheFNbat
In a full season, I’ve got to believe the Angels were better than a .433 team. Well maybe not, if the bullpen kept blowing games at a record pace. You fix the pen, they’re .500 plus already.
Halo11Fan
Swing. This is why I keep bringing up the bullpen. This is an every year occurrence. The first six weeks to two months of the season, they figure out their bullpen, and until they do, they are underwater.
They started off 9-22, then went 18-9
I have no idea how fans keep missing that. Every year this team gives up a number of games because it can’t figure out who to go to in the later innings of games.
Scrap1ron
It’s a shame, but the Angels are going to waste the best years of Trout’s career. He may never get to play in a playoff game, let alone compete for a World Series.

Halos need an extra OF and Puig is out there. Don’t understand why they don’t just give him a shot and pair him with the greatest baseball player that’s ever lived, Michael Nelson Trout. Not smart to trade Adell at the moment just because his stock is at its lowest it’s ever been. I will say he looked like he’ll never really live up to the hype, but you gotta at least give him a shot to get his numbers and trade value up.
Us Angel fans are looking at another embarrassing and frustrating year unless this new GM guy can pull off SEVERAL more moves and add SP, RP, OF, and 1B help. Probably need two or more solid hitters and lots of pitching at the very least.

No one will ever compare to Enberg and Drysdale. it was probably the best broadcast team in California history. Drysdale later became a Dodger Broadcaster, but he was past his prime.

Sorry to see Victor leave. I liked Victor and Goobie. I also liked Physioc and Hud. Big shoes to fill for sure.

It humors me why people are advising not to trade Adell for a bonafide ace. Will he be a stud? Maybe. An organization that has been garbage the last several years after consistently dumpster diving for outdated pitchers, needs to stockpile as many great starting arms as they can. Trading Adell for an ace is an easy call and it’s not even a “because we need to win now” situation. It’s getting a proven arm for someone who hasn’t proven anything. Is his stock really down? He may be garbage now but he’s still held in extremely high regard. Trade him. Trade him now and get an ace. Easy call. I’m an Angel fan and my kids like the Dodgers – I don’t blame them.

So what Ace are you talking about?

It doesn’t matter. Anyone they can lure away with a trade. They just need to make it happen.
