DECEMBER 20: Fortunately, Lasorda’s condition has improved over the past few weeks, relays Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter link). He was transferred out of the intensive care unit late last month and hopes to be released from the hospital on Wednesday.
NOVEMBER 16: Legendary Dodger Tommy Lasorda was hospitalized and admitted to intensive care Sunday in Orange County, Calif., the team announced. Lasorda is “resting comfortably,” according to the Dodgers, though his family has requested privacy.
The 93-year-old Lasorda is among the most recognizable and accomplished figures in the Dodgers’ storied history. He began as a minor league pitcher for the franchise in 1949, when it was still in Brooklyn, and saw major league action with the Dodgers from 1954-55. Lasorda’s last MLB season was in 1956 with the Kansas City Athletics.
Once his playing career ended, Lasorda went into scouting and coaching in the early 1960s with the Dodgers – which proved to be a wise move. In 1976, he became the Dodgers’ manager and held that position for two decades. The Dodgers went 1,599-1,439 under Lasorda during the regular season, won eight division titles, took home four NL pennants and earned two World Series championships. Lasorda won Manager of the Year honors twice during his run atop the Los Angeles dugout, and the Dodgers later retired his No. 2.
Lasorda, who ranks 22nd all-time in managerial wins, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997. He has continued to work with the Dodgers as a special advisor since his managerial tenure ended. We at MLBTR wish Lasorda a speedy recovery and hope to see him back with the Dodgers soon.

2020, please don’t take another HOFer.
talking baseball
Please no, not another baseball icon.
oldmansteve
Will it be any better if he passed in January?
swinging wood
I think the default answer should be yes since that means he would get to live longer.
looiebelongsinthehall
Just pray for him and his family.

If he is suffering then that may not really be a good thing.

The Big Dodger in the Sky.
philsphan1979
It’s sad but the man is NINTY THREE years old! Not 23. He isn’t immortal ppl. Btw lasorda is from the same town as me, and everyone dislikes him locally. Same with his PED buddy Piazza. Everyone locally knows piazza juiced and the reason he didn’t get caught was because it would of tainted Tommy’s career. FACTS
philsphan1979
By the way just to let ppl know, I do respect his career and legacy. Can’t take away his accolades as a HOFer, but truth is the truth. Hope he gets well tho. Tommy your still in my prayers
dugmet
Father in law is 99 and will be100 in April. THE MAN STILL DRIVES HIS CAR! Tommy is a young man to him.
itstimefordodgersbaseball
Lol conspiracy theories are facts in 2020. Cause that really would have “tainted” Lasorda’s career after already winning 2 rings.
philsphan1979
It tainted Pete’s career, why wouldn’t it taint lasordas? And come on let’s be real here…everyone knows Piazza was drinking that juice. But your absolutely right! It is theory, otherwise they wouldn’t be where they are now
fox471 Dave
When I read the first post by phil i thought that may be the dumbest post I ever read. Then, I read the second post and realized that phil was able to out do himself. Way to go phil!

this in an incredibly awful take, and you should probably take the rest if the year off from commenting. Tommy Lasorda is one of the greateat people to ever be involved in the game of baseball. Not.only a great baseball mind but and incredible person. Shame on your awful take.

Here is another fact…..you are an ass hat.

Dude, what did Tommy Lasorda ever do to you?
Answer: youtube.com/watch?v=vX4L2LHGs98
GASoxFan
You hate to say it, but maybe he was battling issues trying to hang on to see them finally get their WS with their talented group. Sometimes people have a drive that helps them hang on.
Any word on WHY he was hospitalized? Covid?
ldoggnation
He’s had heart problems for years.
Joeypower
Dave Roberts is the cause of that i bet you!
BlueSkies_LA
Try not being a jerk and see how it goes.
smuzqwpdmx
Heart problems for decades. Several of them. Since last century, in fact. He had a heart attack in 1996 that prompted his retirement, and was quite obese. Don’t think anybody imagined him making it this far. Hopefully he’s got a few more astonishingly unexpected years in him.
LordD99
That’s why it’s amazing he’s still with us at 93. Did not exactly take care of himself, very overweight for a long period, heart attack nearly a quarter of a century ago, ongoing heart issues. People generally don’t make it to 93 with that medical profile. Hopefully he keeps beating the odds and gets to celebrate his 100th.

Halo11Fan
I had a friend who introduced me to Lasorda. My friend is a HUGE baseball fan, but not a big Dodger fan. Lasorda went off on him for not being a big Dodger fan. I couldn’t believe it.
DrDan75
Lasorda once asked a San Diego cop for directions to the ballpark. The cop sent him to the desert. Lol
BlueSkies_LA
If you don’t get that you don’t get Tommy.
jeffmaz
I had the pleasure of getting cussed out by Lasorda while the Dodgers were playing in Atlanta. It was pre- cell phone days but I wish I had a recording. It was a minute and a half of pure Tommy.
BlueSkies_LA
If it was me I’d have a t-shirt made up, “I was cussed out by Tommy Lasorda.”
jimij
Great manager and hot head, fun to watch and a real gamesman, he gave the Dodgers a real heads up and saw him many times vs the Reds back in the day when the they were in the same division
BlueSkies_LA
Tommy is from another generation of larger than life managers. Draw a line straight through baseball history from John McGraw to Leo Durocher to Casey Stengel and Sparky Anderson. Tommy is the last of them. The game has changed so much since their day. No place in it anymore for huge personalities like theirs.
Prospectnvstr
Don’t forget Bobby Cox & Jim Leyland
bravesfan88
Right you cannot forget the ultimate player’s coach, for better or worse, and the all-time leader in ejections, The Bobby Cox!!

Lou Piniella as well.
Tim_Buck-Two
Now that’s priceless “I was cussed out by Tommy Lasorda” have his face on it right below yelling… Take it from a screenshot with one of his arguments with an umpire. Colors in dodger blue white and red. I’d buy one
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
That’s awesome, and kudos to you for recognizing it as a badge of honor!!!

I am lucky, my sister is an associate athletic director at Nevada, and a local dealership hosts a baseball event for the college team, the Bobby Dolan Baseball Dinner. Dolan was in the Dodgers organization, so they usually try for Dodger players and personalities. Last year it was Nomar, and I’ve met Dave Roberts and Tommy Lasorda at earlier ones. My sister gets tickets every year, and the food is good and I usually get to meet a Dodger.
The event with Tommy as the speaker was the best one thus far. Great talk, Tommy has such an outsized personality. And there’s no bigger fan or ambassador for Dodger Blue than Tommy Lasorda.
mlb1225
Get well soon, Tommy!

I’m not sure he will get well soon, unfortunately. This simply based on what I’m hearing via reports here in Los Angeles.

COVID ruins everything.

He is 93. That is a long life. COVID has nothing to do with it. Less than 1% of population lives to that age. And it is heart related.

Good try; it’s congestive heart failure. Natural causes. Like a lot of other reported covid fatalities.

cars – “I will have a good thought for you Tommy.”
I literally have no idea what that means.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
Do not lean on your own understanding@, The world sends thoughts to the universal god of their minds. That God then sends positive General energy out in a general sense everywhere and hopefully some of it latches to Tommy and reinvigorates and heals him.
This energy is available to all who desire it and can Channel it through meditation and other things. Christians go to Jesus.
bravesfan88
Christian’s go to Jesus, and clearly Gary goes to his bong..lol
fox471 Dave
Why? Was it the English that threw you, prov?
prov356
No, fox, its wasn’t the English.
DrDan75
Godspeed Tommy. One of the best baseball guys of my lifetime.
Bluemarlin528
A great man and Ambassador to the game.
HalosHeavenJJ
Phenomenal ambassador for the game. As recently as 2 years ago he had a table outside of the Dodgers Spring Training stadium where he signed and took pictures with fans.
He looked pretty rough last time I saw him up close, at the Dodgers/Angels game in 2019.
BlueSkies_LA
He is at virtually every home game, in his seat next to the Dodgers dugout, pretty much right below our seats. You’d never see any of the owners there, but Tommy, almost always. At one playoff game not very long ago he ran up and down the aisle waving a Dodgers banner. Got the crowded fired up. Nobody like him in baseball.
Get better, Tommy. We need to see you in your seat again, right where you belong in your Blue Heaven on Earth!
HalosHeavenJJ
That’s cool. This was at the Big A. He had a table behind home plate in the diamond club area. Everyone smiled and waved to him.
He pitched for the LA Angels before Brooklyn moved here. Most people don’t know that, but he’s truly a piece of SoCal baseball history as well as Dodgers history. Unfortunately MLB wants to pretend there wasn’t already good baseball before they moved here.
BlueSkies_LA
And the Hollywood Stars, Their stadium was on Fairfax, next to Farmers Market. Tommy’s home is actually a lot closer to Anaheim than LA. He’s lived in the same tract house in Fullerton since the 1950s. Probably you knew that already. When the Dodgers created “Lasorda’s Trattoria” on the right field side a few years back he’d show up at one of the outdoor tables sometimes. Was never there for it myself but I heard.

Tolerance goes zero ways in your world apparently.
MoRivera 1999
So we should be tolerant of bigots? Tolerance does not include tolerance of hate. That’s the way that works.
Troutgolfsinoctober
Why are you replying to me? I didn’t say anything about tolerance or his son.
I don’t understand and if the format is messed up than you can have a pass but if you are that moronic Or picking an argument for no reason then here you go…
Shut your damn mouth about rights and politics this is a sports site. It’s idiots like you who drag politics and “being right” into sports, which it has no place.
I watch sports to get away from ppl who think they are the righteous ones because they stand for “tolerance” when they are in fact the least tolerant if you hold a view different than theirs.
Have a good day
Troutgolfsinoctober
So because you are the one who decides what’s hate and what’s not?
Sounds like if you hold a view different than mine than that’s hate. That’s elementary. And I support your right to think whatever you want even though you clearly don’t feel that way about others

Actually it was The Baseball Bunch….it was on right before This Week in Baseball if I remember right.

Lasorda was a jerk and helmed some of the worst dodgers teams in history. Theres very few people i completely hate in this world and one of them is Tommy Lasorda. Not only is he abrasive, he’s homophobic and I have zero sympathy for bigots.
The only think Lasorda brought to baseball was his terrible personality and anger issues.
