The Royals have been one of MLB’s most active clubs early in the offseason, adding four free agents — Mike Minor, Carlos Santana, Greg Holland and Michael A. Taylor — on big league deals and jettisoning Maikel Franco via non-tender. General manager Dayton Moore isn’t calling it an offseason yet, however, as he detailed in an appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM this morning (Twitter link, with audio).
Franco’s non-tender appeared to set the stage for Hunter Dozier to slot in at third base, and Moore made clear that the organization’s preference is indeed for Dozier to solidify the position. However, the GM noted that due to Dozier’s versatility, he’s still open to adding a third baseman and deploying Dozier elsewhere (likely in the outfield). As such, Kansas City’s search for another bat in the lineup won’t necessarily be restricted by position. Moore did acknowledge that his ideal addition would bat from the left side of the plate.
That certainly makes sense, as the club’s lineup leans right-handed at the moment with Salvador Perez, Whit Merrifield, Jorge Soler and Dozier all locked into regular roles. The aforementioned Taylor also hits right-handed. Santana and Adalberto Mondesi give the club a pair of switch-hitters, while Franchy Cordero and light-hitting second baseman Nicky Lopez bat from the left side.
Cordero, of course, has yet to solidify himself as a big league regular, but the Royals are hopeful that’ll happen in 2021. Moore specifically cites getting playing time for Cordero as a priority in 2021, so it seems he’ll join a carousel of Merrifield, Taylor, Edward Olivares and any external option signed by Moore (or Dozier, should the Royals sign a third baseman). The club could also find playing time for Merrifield at second base if Lopez’s offensive woes continue.
There’s no shortage of lefty-swinging third basemen on the market at the moment. Any of Jake Lamb, Travis Shaw or Brad Miller would be affordable, as would veteran switch-hitters like Asdrubal Cabrera or Marwin Gonzalez (the latter of whom could play third base or in the outfield). The list of outfield options is considerably longer, with Michael Brantley headlining the list of lefty-hitting free agents. Japanese star Haruki Nishikawa would fit the Royals’ frequent mold of speed/defense-oriented players, and if Moore’s previous comments about bolstering his team’s OBP are still a guiding factor, veterans like Matthew Joyce, Nick Markakis or Robbie Grossman are all sensible, affordable targets.
The Royals’ payroll currently checks in at about $87MM, so there’s room to add another bat, a more experienced backup option behind the plate and/or an additional arm to the bullpen while still remaining within striking distance of last year’s $95MM Opening Day mark (prior to prorating salaries).

Over/under 30 seconds that Brantley’s agent spends trying to sell KC over virtually every major title contender?
allweatherfan
About the same amount KC actually considered him.

Touché.
Marty McRae
@wesstl – Where does it say that? Read the article, it says “The list of outfield options is considerably longer, with Michael Brantley headlining the list of lefty-hitting free agents.”
It does not say “KC is not considering Brantley”, which is what you appear to be saying here?
Where is your source?
Why would you post a comment like that, directly challenging the integrity of Steve Adams, the writer of this article?
myaccount
Marty McRae- That’s EXACTLY what he’s saying lol. You just spent time challenging him over something but either didn’t understand his point is that KC is likely considering Brantley as much as Brantley is considering KC (close to zero).

I smell a deal for Hosmer….

Please no

In all honesty it would suit the Pads to keep him. He solidifies the right side of one of the top infield’s in baseball. He can hit anywhere in the lineup and with the emergence of Tatis and third season of Manny the infield is really starting to gel.
That said he fits the definition of what the Royals are looking for, an excellent defensive player with a solid if at times, especially in Kansas City, a very good left handed bat.
The teams match up, although not sure what the Royals have to offer.
He’s a fan favorite in KC who know how to win there.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I think about all anyone would have to “offer” to acquire Hosmer is just simply taking his contract off their hands.
MetsFan22
What top 100 prospect are the Padres also adding to hosmer??
Marty McRae
Exactly. This trade would have to be a massive one for both teams. Preller is not scared though, so it’s not a ridiculous thought. I’m thinking the starting framework would be:
Merrifield+Duffy+Lynch
for
Hosmer+Cronenworth+Grisham+Abrams,
with a couple more players involved in the deal on either side.
Padres have a ton of prospect capital to cover Grisham, or could sign Springer for CF, and Merrifield upgrades Cronenworth, who is still enough of a wild card to give a starting roster spot to for next season. Duffy is either 5th SP or longman in pen. Lynch joins the SD prospect stable.
KC gets Hosmer back, a top 50 MLB prospect and two more starting position players for next year for Merrifield, Duffy and a top 100 prospect. Seems fair for both sides, but I could see even more pieces coming together here.
MetsFan22
Yeah that could work
TLB2001
I love Hos. My son was born in 2015 and his initials are HOS, but the Royals just gave Carlos Santana a 2-year deal and Dayton has been preaching OBP. We’re not trading for a first basement with $150m left on his contract.
Yep it is
Moore has 8 million to spend not 20 and especially for Hosmer. That shipped sailed

“light-hitting second baseman Nicky Lopez bat from the left side.”
I remember the scene where The Natural was light-hitting.

I like Natty Light. Not my favorite, but it works in a pinch

Oooooooooooooooh Mervyn Griffin would say

The Royals could always move Merrifield back to second & sign a left-handed hitting outfielder. Cordero isn’t exactly an All-Star
Marty McRae
They should trade him instead of wasting his prime years on a perennial loser.
hammertime510
I got money on Grossman lol
HBan22
Grossman seems like a very Royals-ish signing to me.

Schwarber
PhanaticDuck26
seems like such a good fit… but then again Schwarber could seemingly fit on almost any AL team looking to take a chance on his rebound/potential.
TLB2001
Can Schwarber actually play outfield, especially at The K? I’ve only watched him play a few times, but my understanding is he’s a guy without a position.

Joc Pederson? Rosario? This game is fun.

Tyler Naquin.

It seems like the Royals want to try to give Kelvin Gutierrez the nod at 3B but have a left handed/veteran option if he doesn’t work out. If he does work out they’ll still have a solid left handed bat that can be an all around the field utility player. Brock Holt fits that description and he had a piss poor season last year so the Royals can afford him. Take the rest of the budget and stalk another starting pitcher hungry for a second chance on a rebuilding team.
DarkSide830
i think Kelvin would show well if given a shot.
TLB2001
????
Moore has said Dozier is playing 3B
baseballwarshipper
A big part of Dozier’s value is the ability to play multiple positions, but he’s not that good of a 3rd baseman so I see Gutierrez beating him out of that spot for the most part if he hits, but if the season started today they’d go with Dozier. One of the royals’ few strengths is there roster flexibility that allows them to keep give players a day off when they need one. It also seems like Dozier is lined up to be the most consistent corner OF the royals have at this point behind Merrifeild, Cordero is a wild card and Olivares hasn’t proven anything yet.
TLB2001
Dayton Moore doesn’t play service time games. He’ll be up this year if he’s ready.
Peart of the game
Haruki Nishikawa is actually a good fit in that he plays very good defense in center field, steals lots of bases and get on base a lot. Sounds like Ben Revere at his best.
truroyal15
Not sure why the article would state Dayton wants Dozier to solidify 3rd base. Bobby Witt Jr will lock that job down by the end of the yr or next yr. What Dayton needs to do is sign Brantley for LF, sign Rosenthal and boom u have a team that can fight foe a Wildcard
DarkSide830
lets pump the breaks here on Witt for second. he’s only 20 and doesnt have any experience above the GCL. id be shocked to see him up any time before the service time cutoff in 2022, and maybe even then more likely late 2022 or 2023.

Question for Royal fans. What is your opinion of your manager? I remembered when left the Cards most of them were happy.
DarkSide830
as a non-Missouri fan, I think the guy gets little credit for what he’s done. Cards fans seem to be overly critical of their entire organization despite the fact that its been consistently a very good team and has gone all the way during this run.
jay13
For me, I understand the hiring of Mike Matheny. He was not my first choice but everyone should get a second chance. I am hoping he has learned from some of the botched decisions on pitching and will take advantage of the speed we do have.
They need a LH position player. I would like to kick the tires on Eddie Rosario. Would I be happy with Brantley, ohhh yeah. I doubt he comes to KC though.
No Hosmer deal, too much money still owed and 1st base is not a hole.
KC Bat Boy
He did a very good job last year. We got off to a very slow start, Keller, Dozier, Salvy were out with covid or Salvy’s eye deal. Then Soler is shut down…. He had 4 or 5 rookie starters with 3 of the 5 really throwing well. Rookies in the pen, rookie at 2nd, new guys brought in to play OF. Lots of transition. You take the first 15 games away and we are a wild card team. Maybe several clubs could say that in such a short and odd season. His dealing with the media is 100x better than old crabby Ned too. No reason to not be optimistic we are going to be a better club next year and the year after that.
looiebelongsinthehall
Royals should seriously consider Shaw who won’t cost much. The team needs everything to turn out right for them to be in competitive if not in contention so why not grab a guy with big bat potential to flip in July should he be outperforming the team? He also is under appreciated as a corner infielder.
KC Bat Boy
They signed Santana a switch hitting first baseman. Why in the world would they go after Hosmer? Pay attention and move on…. I think they sign a left fielder or trade for a decent player, not a retread. Our owner is involved and I love it!!! I think they get another stick in left, have a VERY short leash on Lopez and we may just be a .500 club.
john9977
They are not trading for Hosmer why would they trade merrifield he will sign for less to play for kc you guys are nuts, my guess is we sign Brantley.
kcmark
They will sign someone more like Josh Reddick.
CentralFan71
I would go for any of these three.
Eddie Rosario – Solid all around player that has been on winning teams in Minny and flashes a solid glove with timely hitting.
Travis Shaw – 3B is his best position and his LH bat would be welcome in our lineup. He could hit second or sixth.
Kyle Schwarber – There would be no bigger discrepancy on defense between this year and last year, but Kyle is actually a better defender than people give him credit for. He has a cannon for an arm just like Alex and will throw runners out at all bases (except first, of course). I do worry about the vast space to cover at the K, but giving up a few doubles that Alex might have gotten to would be offset by Light Tower Power. Watch out Pepsi Porch and Rivals Sports Bar in right field.
Make it happen Dayton. Good job so far. Add one of these bats and a stud reliever and we will be competitive for sure. Do NOT trade any of the starters in the minors like Lynch, Lacy or Kowar. I want to see a rotation of Singer, Bubic, Lacy, Lynch and Kowar at the K for years to come. Think Atlanta Braves, Oakland A’s or Cleveland Indians with a stable of home grown studs taking the mound every fifth day. I could get used to that.
PiratesFan1981
KC seems to be aiming for the Names on the jersey instead of examining a “core” who could win. Reds,Angels, Phillies, Rangers, etc have bought names and got little return. For a small market team like KC, I hate to see them fall flat over signing “names”
larkraxm
I think those days are over for all MLB clubs. Data, not names, is driving contracts and production projections. The only name that matters is WAR!
