The Reds have acquired outfielder Scott Heineman from the Rangers in exchange for infield prospect Jose Acosta, as announced (via Twitter) by Rangers executive VP of communications John Blake.
Texas designated Heineman for assignment earlier this week, coming on the heels of a previous non-tender and then a re-signing (to a split contract). The 28-year-old made his big league debut with the Rangers in 2019 and has appeared in 49 games over the last two seasons, hitting .189/.259/.331 over 139 plate appearances.
An 11th-round pick out of the University of Oregon in 2015, Heineman made a quick rise up the Rangers’ minor league ladder after hitting .303/.378/.475 over 1839 PA on the farm. He has experienced playing all three outfield positions and has also seen some time as a first baseman, so Heineman’s right-handed bat could be a potential complement to such Cincinnati lefty bats as Shogo Akiyama, Jesse Winker, or Joey Votto.
The 20-year-old Acosta was an international signing for the Reds in 2017. Over a combined 234 PA in the Dominican Summer League and with the Reds’ rookie ball affiliate in 2019, he exploded to hit .395/.481/.579. Acosta has split time between second and third base during his young pro career, and played a few games at first base and in the outfield.
is that the correct link for Acosta?
it is not. Acosta is 19 and he has a pretty nice looking bat. could be a great find for the Rangers
I really like Heineman. never really got too much of a chance to play in Texas. I think he could be a useful big league bat
Hope they give him a chance to earn semi-regular playing time, and I hope he tears it up. The Rangers never gave him a legitimate shot.
Aww… I thought Heineman was going to be a legitimate 4th outfield piece for us, but alas he’s gone. Y’all have a good piece Cincy. A quiet Brian Goodwin.
be excited… the return is good

That José Acosta link looks much better for the Rangers.
He is very young, but the numbers are impressive. Perhaps a good future prospect that will allow Rangers to include Foscue, M.Acosta, Acuna, Ornelas, or Seise in some trades.

this is the link for the prospect
Why trade a pitching prospect for a nobody Thad the Rangers designated for assignment last week? This move doesn’t make since and neither does Nick Krall.
*that the Rangers
look at the link above. that is the actual prospect
Is it a rule that you have to crap on Krall for every transaction, no matter how insignificant? Move on, man.
Man do you know anything about the Reds? They have a history of bad trades, shall I say more?
Yep. Suarez. Castillo, desclafani…terrible deals.
What pitching prospect are you referring to? None in this trade.
He’s not a pitching prospect the Reds gave up idiot!
Pull your head out of your a$$ and if you’re going to criticize someone take a look I’m the mirror!
You’re the Mirror ? Ok, I’ll play. Whos the Greatest of them all ?
Rangers are making a ton of minor moves this off season. In the future they could be making the playoffs once all these players get a chance to prove themselves in the majors.
These are the type of moves that can pay off big. And they are cost effective too! CY is already making an impact.
Is this just to replace Goodwin or is Senzel or Winker or Aquino bout to be moved for a SS?
probably a depth move
There rumors since there won’t be no DH in the National League that Winkler could be traded! No where do play him. As for a SS they’re very interested in Marcus Semien.
so they had a shot to sign him for effectively nothing and instead waited for him to be designated to trade an actual asset for him? odd off season.
Chris Young….wheelin N dealin
yeah, i had thought it would just be a waste to resign him and then immediately designate him, but hey, got a prospect out of it
That how I felt, why trade when he could become a free agent
The Reds traded for him probably because they were concerned that another team would be more likely to sign him.
Wow, this seems like an overpay for a AAAA outfielder. While Acosta is young (almost 21) and hasn’t played advanced ball yet, his rookie numbers are off the charts! Plus he stole 26 bases in 27 attempts in 2019. Rangers are re-stocking their farm with some very interesting, young prospects.
To be fair I think Heineman could be a major league OFer.
Then why did Texas DFA him
Because they have Gallo Tavaras Solak Calhoun and now Dahl. Solak can play OF but should start 2B. Calhoun will be the regular DH and by keeping a smaller bench the Rangers can have a larger bp which help with inning limits with our young pitching
Acosta has been known to Acosta the ball
Rangers also signed a former Rangers top prospect that they traded to Milwaukee. Name is Luis Ortiz. not expecting much from him in truth but holds some nostalgia
Chris Young is not messing around
I think Chris Young might be my father.
You should get a DNA test done Rangers29.
#Rangers29 Montel Williams is on line 1 lol
Always thought he would be a very solid fourth outfielder for the Rangers. They just never gave him consistent at bats to prove his worth. Good pick up for the reds.
Another headline about the reds getting someone who will not be on the opening day roster.
Even little theo epstein isn’t as inept as krall
Nick Krall is a idiot, bum should be fired, he’s going to destroy the reds. Why trade for another outfielder when you have a surplus of them already
Because you might trade them.
The downfall of the Reds rebuild was not being able to internally fill out the OF with anything homegrown and cheap- Years of failed projects in Billy Hams Schebler Duvall Irvin etc etc lead directly to Cast and Moose…Its not that they were wrong in wanting to go for it, its just been shown time and time again that money will not solve everything and you have to excel on all levels if you really wanna take that next leap
Same with Phillies really ; starting with the infamous Osdrubel deal that started it all and thus failure lead to paying Cutch 20 mill this year
Is it a myth that they are signing Heineman’s brother Jaime as well?
I’d gather that Cincy let that Acosta kid go because he’ll require a 40 man roster spot in 2022 and is still playing rookie ball
I was hoping to see both heineman brothers on the same team
Thank you Reds for trading for this guy! Now I can safely sleep tonight that the Pirates didn’t trade Hayes for this guy
Rangers should have kept him. Can’t keep trading away players for other players that are extremely young. It’s going to take 20 years for them to be relevant again at this rate
Should’ve traded for Jeff Hanneman instead.
