“Several teams” have interest in Reds right-hander Sonny Gray, Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweets. That isn’t at all surprising in the wake of the late-November news that the Reds will at least listen to offers for Gray. General manager Nick Krall suggested later that he isn’t in a hurry to trade Gray away, but it does seem the Reds are in payroll-cutting mode, evidenced by Monday’s trade that sent reliever Raisel Iglesias to the Angels. Gray only has a guaranteed $20MM left on his contract over the next two years, but his performance in 2020 should help make it easier for the Reds to garner a major return in a deal if they do decide to move him. The 31-year-old ended the season with 56 innings of 3.70 ERA/3.05 FIP ball, 11.57 K/9 against 4.18 BB/9, and a 51.1 percent groundball rate.
More on a handful of other pitchers…
- There are “more than” six teams interested in free-agent righties Trevor Williams and Jose Urena, per Heyman. Both players were cut loose by their former teams last week, but they’ve had success in the past and could be interesting buy-low hurlers in free agency. Williams, 28, struggled mightily in the previous two years but gave the Pirates 321 innings of 3.56 ERA/3.94 FIP pitching from 2017-18. It has been a similar story for the 29-year-old Urena, whom offenses victimized from 2019-20. In the prior two years, though, the ex-Marlin registered a 3.90 ERA/4.68 FIP over 343 2/3 frames.
- The pitching-needy Phillies “never engaged” righty Charlie Morton, lefty Drew Smyly or reliever Trevor May before they signed free-agent contracts with other teams, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com writes. Two of those players – Morton and Smyly – previously played for the Phillies. They could have improved the Phillies’ rotation, while May might have been an asset to a bullpen that is in desperate need of help. Each player landed an eight-figure deal, though, and the Phillies don’t seem eager to hand out large paydays to anyone this offseason.
- Before the Mets avoided arbitration with Steven Matz on a $5.2MM agreement, they reached out to the Blue Jays to gauge their interest in the southpaw, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. No trade came together, of course. Toronto would have been hard pressed to consider Matz an upgrade for its rotation after he recorded a horrific 9.68 ERA/7.76 FIP in 30 2/3 innings last season.

Nobody is getting Kyle Tucker for Sonny Gray.

You’re kidding, right? Tucker isn’t enough for Gray.

Clearly, the Indians do not need pitching help…

So amid all this cost cutting they will want to take on Lindor’s salary which will be close to the players that they’ve traded away?
I didn’t think trading Gray was realistic 2 weeks ago but now seeing them jettison 2 good bullpen pieces for basically nothing I’m pretty sure Gray is gone before the new year.

He’s much more valuable than Gray, too.

Mrtwotone
Or a high school economics textbook. He should have studied economics and money management because it Doesn’t take a genius to figure out that yelling “were gonna spend stupid money” is a bad decision by hampering payroll and announcing to all the free agents that they are spending wildly and they can get more money from them. It’s a horrible decision even just for negotiations

The Phillies are in a rough position. They’re seemingly stuck in the purgatory that is not quite being able to compete, but not quite ready to blow it all up. As time goes on, it looks more and more like they need to do at least a partial rebuild if they really want to contend in the next few years. Trading Nola and Wheeler for nice packages of young talent could be an option, as trading both would bring the Phillies quite a haul. I doubt they trade any of their hitters, unless a team for some reason takes on Segura’s or McCutchen’s contracts.
In my opinion they need to rebuild the pitching staff completely. Harper, Hoskins, Kingery and Bohm are all still great long term building blocks on offense, but this team desperately needs a completely revamped pitching staff before they can compete again.
VonPurpleHayes
I think they’re essentially taking a year off from spending due to loss of revenue. Tough to lose a year of Harper, Nola, Wheeler an co. in their prime, but that seems to be the strategy. If one can even call it that.
HBan22
You might be right, but is doing nothing really their best move? Whether it’s trying to improve their current club or starting a partial rebuild, I feel like doing nothing is the worst call they could make.
Pax vobiscum
The Phillies never get value for big league assets.
VonPurpleHayes
Completely agree. It’s frustrating, made even more so by the fact that there were moments of them really hitting their stride the last two seasons. They’re not there yet, but there were periods where they looked real solid. In theory, if they had the ability to spend, I think they compete. Without addressing their obvious holes, they have to embrace a rebuild. Painful time to be a Phillies fan.

But the Phillies can sure give away talent. I think the Marlins are happy to have Sixto

The Phillies are and will continue to pay the price for poor drafting and development of players. That’s where Middleton should have spent stupid money.
VonPurpleHayes
The fact that they weren’t even involved with Trevor May tells you volumes. They’re not spending. It’s going to be a tough year.
Pax vobiscum
It’s going to take years to recover from Klentak’s follies. Without that spend management they’re a .500 team at best.
VonPurpleHayes
And honestly, I don’t see a rebuild working. They’ve consistently failed at them.
HBan22
I’ve said it several times already, but I’m highly disappointed with the Reds. I really liked the direction they were headed the past couple of seasons, and despite trading away a lot of good prospects, I really admired their desire to turn into a legitimate competitor. Even after losing Bauer, they were still a team built to win now, and were only a couple of solid signings or trades away from potentially being the NL favorite next season. They threw all of that away in a span of a week. They traded away or non-tendered nearly their entire bullpen, non-tendered a great backup catcher in Casali, and seem willing to trade Sonny Gray now, which in my opinion is officially them waving the white flag.
It’s just a bummer to watch.
titanic struggle
Yeah, yeah…we’ve heard ya. Take a chill pill, they’ll add that SS with a bat, and if they trade Gray it’s not the end of the world. They’d just be maximizing on that contract. Remember. I wouldn’t be suprised if Texas is one of the 6 teams interested in Urena and Williams, but if we do get Urena, he needs to go to the pen. Urena is not a starter, and his stuff would play way up going to the pen. He reminds me of Rafael Montero so much, and if we could capitalize on that and make him a shutdown closer, it would be huge for us.
south side hit men
White Sox are not going to sign Bauer. A package around Dunning could work to get Gray. That would be a pretty good starting three and I’m still very high on Kopech. Then open the checkbook for Springer. Bring back Colome. With Crochet and Bummer and Foster and Heuer the bullpen is solid.
HBan22
I like Dunning quite a bit. I’d rather trade Cease in a Sonny Gray trade, but that may not be enough to land him.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Dunning might be gone in the Lance Lynn deal they just completed.

This article stinks re Jays
Every club or agent who wants to unload a player calls the Jays. Atkins can’t scout professionals very well.
See: Anthony Kay, Chase Anderson, Derek Fisher, Mat Latos, Robbie Ray, Ross Stripling, Billy Mckinney, Jake Petricka, Brandon Drury, Thomas Pannone, Travis Shaw, Melvin Upton Jr, Randal Grichuk, Alen Hanson, Derek Law,. Jonathan Villar, Jesse Chavez, Kendrys Morales, the infamous Rob Refsnyder and on and on and on.
Remember folks, these players were mostly brought in to [hopefully] play a significant part in the Jays rebuild, yet they are mostly misfires.
When will MLBTR and the general media start calling the Jays brass for what they are? Mostly incompetent.
its_happening
This has been a problem since Ash. If Atkins wants the benefit of the doubt, he needs to plead to Shapiro to fire any holdover from the Ricciardi era. The A’s way crippled the organization and its ability to scout, develop and produce. Get rid of them.
jimmertee
I see what you are saying. Scouting wasn’t too good in the Ricciardi era. I figured they’d be all gone now. I know the Shapiro clan fired a boatload of scouts not to long ago.

Not a good success rate.
I wonder how it compares around the league.
I don’t wonder enough to look into it.
I do wonder why you wouldn’t include Teoscar. He alone outweighs most of your list.
Or Lourdes when you find a way to disqualify my Teoscar nomination.
There’s still hope for Kay, Ray, Stripling to provide average innings.
I wonder why you ignore the bullpen successes. There’s a bit of magic touch building these bullpens. Anything other than a curse with the rotation and the bullpens wouldn’t get so tired or end up traded from.
Merryweather looked quite electric. Where’s he on your list? #cherrypicktofitnarrative
Kirk, Moreno, maybe they have a bit of magic finding catchers. Signs pointing to a coincidence, but wouldn’t that be a great thing if we can cheer for a team that can consistently develop and trade catchers?
When will you have a nap so you can consider all factors on a fresh brain before ranting this exaggerated nonsense?
jdgoat
Jimmer looked at his list and thought guys like Latos, Upton, Hanson, Law etc. were going to play a significant part of the rebuild lmao at this point hes not putting any effort into his trolling.
its_happening
You forgot how the Jays tried everything to let Romano leave, and did.
Merryweather for Donaldson was a blunder. You conveniently forget the Jays could have (rumored) acquired two of either Gallen, Hudson or Weaver from St Louis. Very different scenario if that were to have happened.
Jimmer forgot Petricka and Kingham and a host of others. But that’s the game.
You might call it nonsense. There is some validity to his comment. Some is the operative word.
jimmertee
Hey even if Shapiro is as bad as I say, he is going to get a few right.
At the moment the BlueJays don’t scout well, and everyone in the league knows it. The BlueJays take fliers on skills. That was Teoscar and Merryweather.
Teoscar with his new Bo Bichette swing is now a hitter that I told everyone he would be when he was acquired. He can’t field though. I told everyone that at the time too. Period.
I wrote in these pages when he was acquired that Merryweather would be a lights out setup man. Or opener. He won’t be a 2-3 turns starter or closer. It was a poor trade for an MVP.
The best catcher prospect the Jays have is Adams not Kirk or Moreno.
So filthy, I call them both ways, but overall, Shapiro is awful when it comes to winning a world series. He is not an elite talent evaluator. He is a good renovator. Like Cleveland, I look forward to the BlueJays removing Shapiro from all Baseball related decisions and confine his portfolio to marketing, Finance, and renovations.
The BlueJays need an elite Pres/GM. Toronto teams do well with elite GM’s who have power over boards. Gillick/Beeston, Masai, lamierello, Pat Quinn. I will stop hammering away at the the Jays when they have elite executive talent.
Edward Rogers are you listening?
its_happening
Oooh Adams? If he’s that good he wouldn’t have been passed over for Kirk.
Kirk is overweight with a weak arm. Steal on him all night. He can hit.
Moreno is an athlete. I think he’s the best of the three.
filthyrich
Not a good success rate was my opening thought.
Many valid points.
Still not seeing a lot of elite options around the league.
Many openings get filled with question marks. Sometimes the question marks even succeed.
Would Epstein put the current Jays over the top? Are the Cubs left in that great of position?
Dombrowski? Were the Tigers or Red Sox left in that great of positions? Do Rogers allow a different exec to spend like the Cubs and Red Sox spend?
Any means necessary for a title? I’m one, maybe two seasons from that point.
Interested to see if a big fish ace can be added to the current core.
The teams like TB, Oak, Cle that avoid bad contracts and have a lot of young talent to draw from don’t win titles, so maybe I should be more urgent as well.
What has Cashman done recently? How much money and how many tries did it take for the Dodgers?
Trying to catch lightning in a bottle for most teams. Jays brass doesn’t need to be perfect, it’s all relative.
Relative to the AA years, things are going about the same. Still no World Series.
Relative to JP/Ash years, things are better right now.
Relative to Gillick, the bar is not being hit.
Purged out the high contracts, let some youth develop, and now adding key pieces to the new core is the crucial step. I’m skeptical. They’ve made gains but clearly not perfect. But other teams aren’t just stepping aside. White Sox similar window appear to be wanting it more. Some big fish still available. And even then, nothing is won on paper.
Thankful there is a Cy Young candidate in the rotation, a Gold Glove candidate in LF and a MOTY candidate on the bench for now. Things looking up from here!
jimmertee
I am happy that there are some good players on the club too. I enjoy watching Gurriel Jr play both sides of the ball, Vlad’s and Hernandez at bats, and Ryu’s starts. Biggio is a very good player. I would like to see him at a permanent position.
If we look at how teams win, they follow the build from within then spend spend spend model. The Elite Gms build for about 2-3 years, not 5-10 and then spend to go for the win. Jays are overdue to spend. They couldn’t do it in the 2-3 yr range because they waited to long or made bad trades getting rid of established players from the previous regime.
filthyrich
Dodgers built for like 10 before finally succeeding.
Nationals messed up a few times before finally succeeding.
Astros tanked hard for a few years. Astroball seems to be what a lot of teams are trying.
Royals had a different blueprint than the Red Sox, both different from the Giants, none close to the Marlins.
Not seeing any pattern of success around MLB in recent years.
Strong pitching a common thread throughout time. The most volatile piece.
its_happening
I disagree with Filthy as the Ash years has a resemblance to the modern day Jays; Delgado, Stewart, Green, A-Gon, Cruz, Wells, Fernandez 3.0 and the young pitchers are similar to Vlad, Bo, Biggio, Gurriel, Teoscar etc.
So let’s just have a real discussion about “elite”, since you and I are the only ones that care to get there while others lean on a wing and a prayer.
Jays need Bauer, no questions asked. The next move is to call Pitt and work out a deal for Musgrove, Taillon or both.
Then go for a bat at 3B or 2B, or both. Find a take for Grichuk and Roark. Easier said that done. If one of the INF positions mentioned is addressed, find a CF. I think a JBJ/Pillar platoon would work for two years until Martin is ready to roll. Call the Cubs and find out what it will take for Contreras.
1. Biggio
2. Bichette
3. Hernandez
4. Vlad
5. Gurriel
6. Tellez
7. Contreras
8. 2B/3B
9. JBJ/Pillar
Whoever the mystery INF is could hit higher in the order. That lineup is dangerous.
Bauer
Ryu
Musgrove/Taillon

Strong takes.
I actually was thinking about the Ash and JP years if there was an 8 team playoffs after I posted.
By this year’s seeding….
7 seed in 98, 99,00.
8 seed in 01. Under .500
Ash not so bad.
Then JP.
8 seed in 02. Still under .500
7 seed in 03, 8 seed in 05, 6 seed in 06, 7 seed in 07, 8 seed in 08
JP not so bad either.
Neither great.
AA, 8 seed in 10, 11, 2 seed in 15.
Few bad years, and the best year of the bunch.
Atkins 6/7 tie in 16, 8 seed in 20.
About the same overall.
Not over the hump. Common theme since 1994.
In season, I think there will be pitchers available if Bauer picks elsewhere.
Someone better than Ryu needs to be in the rotation by end of July.
If it was Bauer in December, I’m more than fine with that.
But he probably gets to pick from 7-8 teams that push him to Cole/Strasburg numbers, and then I start to prefer waiting to trade for an ace at the end of a contract.
Slight preference. More money vs prospect cost.
Agree that a capital A type Ace is needed.
Kim or Lemahieu or if we’re calling the Cubs, let’s get Baez in these Contreras talks. Or Bryant.
I’d like Pillar, but Jays are too PC for a guy that has put his foot in mouth a couple times now. JBJ preferred, but honestly, more want than need, Davis can be a fine 4th OF for a couple months. Deadline adds. Buxton?? Kiermaier? JBJ haha?
Bullpen!! Beef it up! Strong lefty, if not Hendriks, Hand. Strong righty, if not Rosenthal, Colome. One righty and one lefty to move all existing options back 2 pegs.
Try some young arms in the 5 spot in the first 2-3 months to see if any can stick. Astros giving a chance to Valdez and Javier really worked out well. Even if it’s for a couple months, a hot Kay or Zeuch could be flipped for an expensive ace at the end of a contract. Lynn trade is a nice blueprint.
Reds might trade Castillo, if not now, early in the season?
Thoughts on various other paths, no set path in stone, no urgent needs. Yet. In my mind at least.
filthyrich
Other divisions-
NL East, Braves, Phillies, Nationals, Mets, one of these will be a seller in July I think. Phillies seem to be the ones that would sell, I like the Segura trade talks more if Nola is involved.
NL Central, are they all sellers already? Musgrove would be nice but I think waiting for nicer is more appealing. Cubs, Brewers, Cardinals, Reds, one of these will be a big seller in July I think. Hendricks? Darvish? Cain? Hader? Castillo/Gray?
NL West, Dodgers, Padres far enough ahead that the others may be sellers already? Senzatela/Freeland/Marquez would be interesting to me. Cueto for Roark? haha.
AL Central, will Indians or Twins be selling by July? Some nice pieces there.
AL West, I wonder if the A’s move Bassitt/Manaea slow start or not, just cause it’s the A’s.
its_happening
No players with 1 year like Baez just to take over Bo at SS. Forget that.
I do not care nor am I offended by Pillar. Athletes have said and done worse. Davis would be on the roster also. He replaces Hernandez late in games and pinch runs.
Less teams on Bauer than you think. I bet Dodgers, Yanks and Red Sox are not in on him hard. No reason the Jays can’t be aggressive on Bauer. I bet they aren’t because Atkins and Shapiro do not like him or his antics.
Cubs probably aren’t rebuilding. But they want to deal Contreras to give way to a cheaper in-house Catcher. That allows Jansen to be part of a package for Musgrove. Grichuk I would package with Roark and prospects for Arenado. Sign Kim and no need for JBJ. Biggio goes to CF. Pillar and Davis are his security blanket.
Worry about the deadline when you need to worry about the deadline. Worry about end of March.
jimmertee
Guests, that is my kinda thinking to fill out the roster.
filthyrich
Some big SS available going forward, no need for Bo’s presence to block any decisions.
One season of a GG caliber SS and then push for another stud SS the following season. Baez could be a GG caliber 2B if there is a strong enough belief in Bo.
Don’t see Cubs having a replacement ready for Baez though, big stretch. Hendriks/Darvish were bigger stretches.
A slow start and they might be looking at squeeze some value out of a stud that’s primed to leave. Even now so they can add value elsewhere. Contreras and to a lesser extent Bryant are quite appealing to me.
I’m less worried about the deadline as more excited about the possibilities likely to become available then compared to what’s available right now.
Though right now seems to be some names available and a bar that isn’t so high for offers.
For Pillar, I don’t and majority of fans don’t care either. But the team seems to be quite PC to me. Would really surprise me to see him return. (kinda thought you meant get both JBJ/Pillar initially- just 1 is a solid fit)
I think the variable that Bauer may consider a shorter contract at a higher rate brings a couple surprise teams into the mix.
And if he is willing to consider a longer contract, then a team at the bottom could wow him with a 10 year type deal. He moves every team’s window up a year.
Yankees just have to be in enough to get the bids to grow.
LAA, NYM, TOR, BOS, LAD, NYY at some level of interest.
They maybe shouldn’t but probably drive up the bidding because they have room in the future budget and they play in large markets: SF, DET, BAL, TEX.
Wild card route… always the wild card route: MIA.
One of these unlikely teams might let him pitch every 4th day and give him a contract $1 higher than Cole’s to woo him away from the casual offers that a team closer to contention with payroll restrictions ends up submitting.
I’m not saying they’ll all be in but I don’t think 7-8 teams is a stretch.
Not a fan of Arenado outside of Coors unless the cost is very low. Big risk. The glove and the hole at 3B means I’m not against.
Rather push for Gritty Turner and save the trade chips for more pitching.
I also think the Rockies would block your number with that offer.
I find Musgrove to be a fragile type? (aren’t they all) Not sure I like give up value there. Relative to waiting a couple months on someone we can see is healthy for the stretch run.
Specifics slightly differ, but general blueprint is on point with what I’d be looking at if I were king. Fun to daydream about and discuss.
its_happening
I did mention JBJ, but he wouldn’t be needed if Biggio was put in CF.
Nearly 100% of pitchers are fragile. Yes.
Arenado would hit 6 or 7 on the Jays. Not kidding. But his D is stellar. Grichuk, Roark and two prospects get it done. No blocked numbers.
Wait a year on SS. There will be SS all over the place. I also think Bo’s big step forward was a good sign. He might not be the SS of the future but he vastly improves and I think he’s earned another year there. 3B is a more pressing need, as is SP.
Cubs would want an arm in the Contreras deal. It’s understandable. It’s fine if Bauer and another SP are acquired. LAA, Mets, Cincy are the front runners. It should be the Jays. That’s who they need to compete with the Yankees and Tampa.
Very fun to daydream.
filthyrich
I have this fear with Bo that he plays half a season again, or some early season errors compound the playoff errors to get in his head.
A vet that can handle SS in the case of injury would be quite ultimate to me.
I start to trick myself into thinking the cost on a Lindor or Baez wouldn’t be too crazy after seeing the cost on Iglesias and Lynn. Different level talents. But some teams seem quite desperate to shed payroll.
In that case, you can commit to going all in on the upcoming SS FA and get a headstart on giving Bo a fresh slate at 3 or 2 bag.
Really hoping to see Bo brush off the playoffs as an experience along the road and continue to the historic hitting pace to start his career.
Depth in general. C, IF, OF, SP, RP, Seeing 5-6 additions above minor league tryout level would be ultimate for me. Multiple pitching, and likely trying internal options at one of the offensive areas. 4 arms and 2 bats would be sweet. Trade some unproven talent even if it hurts down the road. Or just sign from the FA buffet they’ve been drooling over.
This year is the big opening.
Especially if the Rays trade Snell. They’ll still be a threat, but they play with fire each time they let some depth go.
ctyank7
Shame on the now-stingy Phillies. Both May and Morton would have been perfect to enhance a “win now “ team with Harper and Wheeler at their peaks and Hoskins and Bohm big bats lengthening the lineup. Time for Middleton to put up the For Sale sign next the statue of Connie Mack.
VonPurpleHayes
I think he’s hoping for some miraculous financial bounceback in 2021, but fans are not going to support a rebuild when you have a core in their prime. Taking a year off is not smart strategy. Completely tear it down now, or spend and compete.

Matz is a good back of the rotation starter. He’s had some decent years. He’s only had one bad year (I dont count last year for various reasons), and he’ll be 30 next year. I personally wouldn’t mind keeping him, however if we sign another arm plus Thor coming back from Tommy, I’m not sure where Matz fits in and the bullpen was a bad experiment with him. Not sure what Thors timeline is on a comeback but I’m I’m thinking mid next year.
