The Padres have signed right-hander Nick Burdi and lefty Nick Ramirez to minor league contracts, according to Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The hard-throwing Burdi underwent his second Tommy John surgery in October, so the 27-year-old probably won’t be available to the Padres at all in 2021. A second-round pick of the Twins in 2014, Burdi appeared in the majors with the Pirates in each of the previous three seasons, though he only combined for 12 1/3 innings. He also has just five Triple-A innings under his belt, but Burdi has pitched to a 3.44 ERA with 12.2 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9 in 115 minor league frames.
Ramirez, 31, debuted in 2019 and led the Tigers’ bullpen in innings (79 2/3) that year. He threw another 10 2/3 last season. Overall, Ramirez pitched to a 4.28 ERA/4.71 FIP with 8.47 K/9, 3.89 BB/9 and a 46.2 percent groundball rate in a Tigers uniform. Detroit outrighted him in October.

Ramirez is nice depth
GASoxFan
Would you say they signed him in the nick of time?
DrDan75
I would say that they expect to be running Nick and Nick with the Dodgers.
thats it fort pitt
Hate to see Burdi leave. Excellent stuff when healthy.
Sky14
Which he pretty much never is.

As wcr would say, “PRINT THE WORLD SERIES TICKETS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!”

The Pirates just kept waiting for Burdi to stay healthy… and waiting… and waiting…
Robertowannabe
Twins did too, I think… bummer that he is gone but wish him well.
ElGaupo77
This is unfortunate as I think he owed it to the Pirates to sign a minor-league deal with them. I’m sure he was welcome to. I’m sure they spent countless hours on him and got nothing in return. And the guys in the locker room really liked him. But I guess San Diego is sunny?
RedKing22
Not sure I follow your logic. Yeah he’s been with the organisation for a long time and he’s been rehabbing injuries for most of it but he doesn’t “owe” them anything.
GASoxFan
That and they’re willing to invest in trying to win.
Latter part probably played a bigger role in the decision than the sunshine.
TJECK109
LOL you really think Burdi signed for the idea of winning? That’s precious.
Monkey’s Uncle
He doesn’t owe them squat. He wasn’t trying to get himself injured. I would have loved to see Burdi come back, but for all we know the Pirates weren’t interested in bringing him back. Players should take what hey they feel is the best opportunity for themselves.
DrDan75
The Padres are an up and coming team that plays its home games in Southern California. There is probably no shortage of players who want to go there. As for loyalty, it’s a business. The Pirates (or anyone else) would DFA or non tender him if in a second.
padreforlife
No shortage of players that’s why they have won 1WS game in over 50 years. Players go where the most $ is and CA taxes are high

I don’t see the big hoopla about Burdi his era was really high when he was healthy. Ramirez on the other hand is pretty solid.
Robertowannabe
If you look at the raw numbers, you would be correct. However, in 2019 he gave up 5 earned runs in his last outing. His arm went in that game. 5 runs in 1/3 of an inning will destroy a relievers ERA. If you saw him pitch, he was great in the games that he was healthy
RedKing22
That last game pitched that year was against my Diamondbacks and I agree, he did not look right at all during that game. He was solid the rest of the way. Nasty stuff.

As a Padres fan, I am excited to see these two help us out in the pen!

Nick Ramirez is not bad.

What your scouting reports lacks in details, it makes up for in precision.

Odd situation with Burdi in that he’s got his rookie status still intact due to only having thrown 12.1 career innings, but because he’s spent so much time on the injured list he’s actually accrued enough service time to be arbitration eligible. I’m sure it happens occasionally, but I can’t recall another situation like it with a player who is arb eligible with basically no playtime.
Obviously 2021 is a wash for him while he rehabs, but does that basically mean that if SD wants to roster him for 2022 they’ll have to tender him a contract next offseason and then run him through arb for the first time? (or alternatively agree on some amount to skip arbitration) And then he’s controllable through 2024 since he’ll get no service time in 2021?
I’m always a little confused about arbitration eligible players on these minor league deals and what the impact of those signings is.

Nick Ramirez has made a pretty impressive and quick transition from hitter to pitcher after toiling away in the minors as a sub-par offensive prospect he made the switch to reliever and pretty much immediately found success. I realize he pitched in college too so it wasn’t like one of those guys who literally had to start from scratch — but still it’s impressive he found success pretty much immediately upon making the switch. He seems like he could be a solid pickup for the Padres if he can pitch like he had in the minors and more or less in 2020 — he seems to have the raw talent — now it’s just a matter of controlling it and translating his minor league success more at the major League level.

Should someone maybe mention to Preller he needs pitchers NOT rehabbing from TJ in 2021? He seems to not get it.
GASoxFan
Maybe preller figures since it seems like every “healthy” pitcher he signs and trades for ends up needing TJ surgery, maybe he should skip a step and sign them while already rehabbing from TJ.

Preller is the hardest working GM in MLB. He is continuously looking under every rock for baseball players. While the big league club is starting to reap the benefits of their elite farm system, AJ is still stuffing the lower end with some very good prospects. The Padres also have an owner (the first since Ray Kroc) not afraid to spend money! Expect the Padres to be very good to elite for the next decade.
99socalfrc
Tell me someone not named Tatis from Preller’s farm that has impacted the MLB club?
Every big name from their farm in the last 5 years is either flamed out or playing elsewhere (or both). Lamet has been a nice piece but he was in the organization before Preller got there.
It’s great that the owners will spend, they deserve credit for that, It’s probably time they come to realize that is what built their team, not Preller’s wannabe super powers.
They paid for Hosmer
They paid for Machado
They paid for Pomeranz
They got Pham because they would pay and Tampa wouldn’t
They got Pagan because they would pay and Tampa wouldn’t
They got Davies because they would pay and Milwaukee wouldn’t
They got Richards because they would pay him to rehab when noone else would
They have Myers because they paid him so much that noone else wants him
Then there is the money they ate:
Took Chase Headley’s contract because Preller thought Bryan Mitchell was the secret sauce
Took Phil Hughes contract so they could draft ??? I don’t know somebody they must have traded by now
Spent $100 million internationally in 2016 for ??? Awesome scouting for sure…..
The owners deserve all the credit for any success this team has, remember they are the ones who signed James Shields to start with, then ate a bunch of his money so Preller could get Tatis in the first place.
SDHotDawg
It was way over $100 Million in 2016. He had to pay double for exceeding their ceiling. I want to say it was closer to $160 Mil, but I’d have to check to be sure.
padreforlife
Bingo

@libertyfighter …
I see the Preller Fan Club still exists.
padreforlife
Let’s not forget signing Shields and let’s not use idiotic comment “he got us Tatis” guess what other ways to get him. Jered Weaver? Wasting 24 mil on Kinsler and Richards. Norris. Preller is trainwreck that owners keep letting happen
padreforlife
Hardest working who cares lol. His deadline deals all backfired.
dvmin98
Looks like the Padres are taking a Mulligan on Burdi for 2021
SDHotDawg
They should have taken a pass.
But, Burdi “throws hard when he’s healthy.” Again, Preller still hasn’t figured out scouting ML-level pitching. He’s fascinated with velocity, but he doesn’t seem to grasp the fact that a lot of guys who throw hard will never make it to the big leagues. And he doesn’t understand why.
Pads Fans
2022 pitching is coming around. Clevinger will be back from TJ. Burdi will be back from TJ.
SDHotDawg
Some things never change. Let’s just move the goalposts every year. Now, it’s 2022!?
We need two proven ML SPs, and we need them now. Instead we get yet another TJ patient on his second surgery, and a 31-year old project.
Because, Preller.
padreforlife
That’s the misfit GM that Padre fans love oh those prospects get fans running
SDHotDawg
These guys aren’t even prospects.
its_happening
Your team is one of the best in the NL. No reason to look ahead to 2022 when you’re good in 2021. Go get the job done. Can’t rely on Burdi either btw.
SDHotDawg
Yeah, what he said! ^

2022 that’s the ticket.
