How much money are the Reds trying to shed?
The more I look at the Reds, I like the idea of ATL trading for Castellanos and Suarez. The Reds get out from under a lot of money over the next few years. The Braves can easily put a package together and probably not involve any of the top prospects. Maybe even to help offset $9 million the Reds take Inciarte.
An upgrade at 3rd along with 2 power bats that can hit 4-5 or 3-4 depending on where they bat Freeman 2 or 3. Then d’Arnaud in behind the 2 of them.
Hopefully AA has atleast thought about this possibility.

Why on earth would you want Castellanos and his contract?
jorge78
It’s a reasonable contract for the very good offense he has shown. He’s been way over 100 OPS+ the last five seasons…..
Jean Matrac
jorge78:
I don’t think anyone would argue that he isn’t a very good hitter. But there’s more to baseball than just hitting. If the NL does not adopt the DH, he has no place on any NL team.
His defensive numbers are brutal. In only 4 seasons he’s managed to compile a -38 DRS at 3B, and another -38 DRS in RF. His numbers in LF, which he did not play in Cincy, are just bad as opposed to tremendously bad. But the numbers from his work in LF is a small sample. Any team that plays him in the OF is going to get what they deserve; bad defense.
jorge78
Oh, OK. Forgot
about defense.
Good points,
thanks!

@tad2b13
The Braves don’t need him to be great in LF. They just need him to hit.
In all likelihood the NL adopts the dh no later then 2022. All signs are pointing to it. So if he chooses to opt out that’s fine. If he doesn’t he moves to DH in 2022 and Waters takes over LF.
braves25
@bravesiowafan
What’s wrong with his contract? 3 years and 46 mil is reasonable. He has an out out after 2021 so it may just be a 1 year deal anyway. Ozuna is going to cost more than that. Ozuna may cost as much as both Castellanos and Suarez combined.
bravesiowafan
His contract isn’t the problem the fit for the Braves is. Even in the purposed trade above is going to cost more prospect capital then ozuna. At this point I’d rather pay ozuna another year or two then a wonky trade for ozuna-lite especially if he has a good year and opts out after giving something up
DTDATL
Ozuna isn’t going to break the bank, can’t figure out why people think he will. He’ll get 3-4 yrs at 18-20 mil per yr. All his value is in his bat, he knows it and teams know it.
braves25
@Bravesiowafan
Ok so which is it? First you asked “why on earth would you want Castellanos and his contract?” Now it is that he isn’t a fit….
Honestly I think he is a fit. Not so much for him personally but also the addition of Suarez. So the question is, which do you think is better? Ozuna in LF (also horrible defense) and Riley at 3rd, or Castellanos in LF and Suarez at 3rd?
Plus the cost of Castellanos and Suarez isnt going to be that high. The Reds will be getting out from under A LOT of money. That is the point. You may not even have to give up prospect capital. Riley, Newcomb, and Inciarte probably come very close to getting it done.
braves25
@DTDATL
I never said Ozuna would break the bank…but to me Castellanos+Suarez in the lineup is better than Ozuna+Riley.
Now if we could really get Ozuna for 18-20 that is different. I am expecting him to get 22-24…where Castellanos and Suarez combine for 24.5
bravesiowafan
It’s both if we are willing to pay for Castellanos, we should just sign ozuna. 1. Ozuna has a much more projected production then nick would and less streaky. 2. I would still rather have ozuna in the outfield for the one year. I personally don’t think either player would be in the field everyone seems to think the DH will be there next year, even if not ozuna rates out higher as a defender. As for Suarez he isn’t worth it either. Yes he’s established by if you look at current projection sites Austin Riley is expected to produce just as well as Suarez except Riley is better at defense and comes at pre arb cost. Lastly the reds aren’t just gonna take our scraps in Newcomb or inciarte a deal like that will still cost several top 10 prospects.
jorge78
I feel bad for Reds fans! Seems like they want to gut the team and put a AAA squad out there. Next season is going to be very interesting with all these billionaire owners crying poverty while trying to avoid being mauled by their fans.
BobSacamano
If they can get some blown away offers for Gray, Castillo, or Suarez; that better rounds out their team, I don’t blame the Reds for considering. The Raisel Iglesias trade seemed like a good one to me.. when you factor in a solid bull pen piece w/ team control, along w/ a ptbnl. I think the media is overblowing this team’s initiative.. who really knows though. I just can’t logically believe they’re willing to go the fire-sale route after last year.
jorge78
True! I just see too many “prospects” not working out. Maybe they could thread the needle…..
BobSacamano
It’s easy to overlook contracts when you’re a fan of the NYs, CHIs, TEXs, & LAs; but contracts like these are extremely volatile to the mid-small market clubs. If they’re willing to throw prospects on top of these contracts, teams like DET should be all over it
ShawnM 2
I am one of the fee Reds fans that don’t mind the idea of rebuilding. We could probably get 4-5 too 100 and other good prospects for Castillo,Gray and Suarez. add those to the 3-4 top 100 prospects we have now and the great draft picks we could get the next 3 years and when Voted comes off the books in 4 years we could be in the same position the Braves and Padres are now. There is a good chance there will be a shortened season next year with limited fans and will probably be a strike in 2022. May not even have a season. Perfect time to rebuild
jorge78
Good points ShawnM 2.
So many non baseball
things for teams to consider in these strange times…..
believeitornot
I wonder if the Mets, if George Springer goes elsewhere, would be interested in Victor Robles. The Nationals need a first baseman and a third baseman and the Mets have both. The trouble is the two teams are in the same division and trades between teams in the same division are rare.
braves25
I don’t see the Nationals trading Robles or the Mets trading Alonso or Smith. Not yet anyway.
jorge78
I can’t believe there was a question about the Mets trading Alonso!!?? Like that’s going to happen…..
DTDATL
Alonso is basically a one trick pony and overrated. Long term, Smith likely ends up with better overall value. If the deal mentioned could come together, the Mets would be stupid to pass it up.
