Could someone tell me how McNeil Mauricio and nimmo is a fair deal for Castillo and senzel. I mean McNeil is worth more than Castillo alone. I’m just asking….
braves25
I don’t think the Mets should make that trade, but I disagree that McNeil is “worth more” than Castillo.
MetsFan22
Why would Castillo be worth more??
braves25
Yes McNeil is an everyday player, but I would put Castillo in the top 25 of all Starting Pitchers in baseball.
McNeil is a very good player don’t get me wrong. I think the Mets need him more than Castillo, but that doesn’t make him worth more. McNeil is probably more valuable to the Mets than Castillo would be.
MetsFan22
McNeil is a better hitter than Castillo is a pitcher. And he is cheap for 4 years and play multiple positions. His value is better. He also has a higher career war with one less year and had a higher war last year. He is waking 900 ops if you combined his last 2 full years and a 130ops +. He also hits 300 easily. Even if avg isn’t the best stat. McNeil is the better player.
braves25
Like I said McNeil is a very good player and is more valuable to the Mets than Castillo would be.
All of those are fair arguements, but in the original post you used the words “worth more”. Being “worth more” doesn’t necessarily always mean you are the better player. When it comes to the playoffs you always want more pitching. So to me the elite starting pitcher is worth more.
VonPurpleHayes
Castillo is a top of the line starting pitcher. McNeil is an excellent player, but pitching is often everything.
Jean Matrac
MetsFan22:
You’re comparing a hitter to a pitcher using stats. That is useless. McNeil is a very good hitter, but there’s a lot more in assessing his value than that. He has some value because of his ability to play multiple positions. And it would be another thing if he played a premier defensive position. But advanced defensive metrics do not like his glove at 2B. Probably for that reason the Mets have moved him away from the IF and now LF seems to be his primary position.
There’s no way, as a corner OF, that he can have as big an impact on a game as a pitcher with as much upside as Castillo. Over his last 2 seasons he’s had an ERA+ of 140. Last season he was 5th in fewest HRs per 9 (pitching in a bandbox), 5th in FIP, and he was 9th in most strikeouts per 9. I think any team would take Castillo over McNeil.
MetsFan22
That team would be stupid. He isn’t even going to play coner OF next year btw. McNeil is a elite hitter that are hard fo find. In the NL east the only hitters better than him are
Soto
Acuna
Freeman
Jean Matrac
No, the stupid thing would be trading Castillo for McNeil, or conversely not trading McNeil for Castillo. It would also be stupid to play him at 2B.
There’s a lot more to baseball than hitting. Fangraphs has him at -1 DRS in 2019 and -2 in 2020. and he’s not that great in the OF either. He could possibly be stashed at 3B where he might get by since it isn’t as crucial a position as 2B.
The Mets played him at 2B in 54 games in 2018, 37 in 2019 and 12 in 2020, which is prorated to 32 games. So it doesn’t appear that they love his glove there either. Defensively he’s a corner OF, that hits like an IF without the glove to play the IF. His ISO of 182, is good, but not great, for a corner OF.
He’s a good hitter, but he is not elite. Looking at 2019, the only batting stat he has is BA, where he was 6th in MLB. But he does not make the top ten in OBP, SLG, OPS, 2Bs, 3Bs, HRs, or TBs. If you limit it to the NL he makes the top ten in BA, (4th), OBP (6th), and OPS+ (6th). But elite hitters make the top ten on multiple lists in MLB, not just one, and not just for their league.
MetsFan22
You acting like Castillo is Degrom. I bet you call Harper or Albies elite. When McNeil hits better than both players.
Jean Matrac
Please. Don’t be ridiculous. Of course deGrom is a much better pitcher. And I wouldn’t call Harper or Albies elite either. Although I would easily take Harper over McNeil. Their OPS+, and wRC+ numbers are similar, but where McNeil gives you BA, Harper gives you power, exactly what you want from a corner. Harper’s ISO is .237, which is exceptional. Way better than McNeil’s .182.
But why in the world would you throw Albies into the argument? I suspect he’s there as a strawman. I’m not that slow that I’m going to fall for that. He’s like the 7th best hitter on the Braves. So, no, Albies is far far from elite. And neither is McNeil.
alproof
Can’t trade McNeil or Mauricio—neither one (or Smith, Alvarez or Allan, for that matter). If he does it, Alderson is a bigger idiot that van WagonWheel. Trade Nimmo, Matz, Gsellman, and Rosario.
DTDATL
You can’t trade players that teams don’t want.
MetsFan22
Teams would really love Nimmo
A team could still want Rosario but you aren’t getting a good player if he is your main piece
Nobody wants the other two
VonPurpleHayes
@MetsFan22 agreed. I also know Mets fans don’t want to part with Smith and Alonso (and who can blame them), but I feel like there’s some redundancy there, and for a really good return, I’d ship one of them in a trade. It has to be the right trade of course. Having two great hitters who can’t field isn’t necessary even if the DH eventually comes in 2022. So if they can package one of them for another stud, I’d pull the trigger. It has to be the right return though.
rangers92
Are the Mets going to get Arrenado?
MetsFan22
Probably not.
rangers92
Will Dom Smith be traded?
MetsFan22
I hope not. If I was Anderson I would sacrifice one year of his horrible D in LF so that next year you could have one of the best DH 1B duals in the MLB.
Deleted_User
Who’s Arrenado?
gbs42
Arrenado a 17-year-old 3B prospect in the Rockies system, but since he’s blocked by Nolan Arenado, Colorado is looking to trade him. I hear Dombowski loves him as a toolsy player.
braves25
Braves get Castillo and Suarez
Reds get Riley, 1 of Wright or Wilson, Mueller, and Trey Harris
Who says no?
MetsFan22
Reds. You need more. Ik Braves fans don’t want to here this but Riley is Renfroe 2.0.
braves25
I never said Riley was great. Why do you think I am hoping ATL trades for Suarez? Castillo would just make that rotation pretty scary.
Fried, Soroka, Castillo, Morton, and Anderson.
braves25
Maybe it takes both Wright and Wilson.
I do think Riley plus some pitching prospects could get it done though
MetsFan22
Maybe. That would be an amazing get for the Braves. Would give you best rotation and replace Ozuna
braves25
Exactly! As long as Waters isn’t in the trade then they should do it. A major upgrade at 3rd plus a bat to hot behind Freeman. The Braves would still need a LF though.
braves25
I wish the Indians would make Ramirez available so ATL could trade for him lol
JAMES JACOBSEN
He’s another Joey Gallo, But keep Castillo, we will keep the pitching prospects and Harris
JAMES JACOBSEN
Reds can have Mueller
DTDATL
It would take more and I’d be willing to give a little more as long as Waters and Pache are off the table.
braves25
@DTDATL
I agree. I would add Anderson to the list with Pache and Waters of people not to include.
Deleted_User
Why would the Reds see shedding Suarez’s salary as a good thing? They’re not getting his kind of production for less in free agency.
Can we get a percentage chance that Frankie Lindor signs an extension?
braves25
There is a 0% chance Lindor signs an extension with the Indians.
Deleted_User
I didn’t say with the Indians.
Prospectnvstr
Remove…: Re your Lindor comment. You asked about a % chance of him signing an extension. Since he’s under contractual obligation to the Indians (I mean Cleveland baseball club) for this year, at this point that’s the only team he could sign an extension with. So either you had a brain cramp or you simply asked a “Here’s your sign” question.
Deleted_User
@Prospectnvstr it’s fairly certain that Lindor will be traded this offseason. So the acquiring team would be able to extend him. What is the % chance that they actually do that?
Prospectnvstr
Remove: Until Lindor (actually) gets traded your question is moot. Since he doesn’t know who he’s going to be playing for, there’s a 0% chance he’s going to sign an extension w an unknown team. That’s why I said your question is a “Here’s your sign” statement.
Prospectnvstr
braves25: Don’t forget to practice calling them the soon to be politically correct Cleveland baseball team instead of the Cleveland Indians.
bobtillman
Mets fans will be happy when they acquire Trout, Betts and Snell.
Deleted_User
WIth their current teams paying 80% of their salaries
DarkSide830
i dont think that is even good enough tbh
NYYstateofmind
Is EVERYONE on this site on dope?
gbs42
With more states making it legal, the odds are going up.
everlastingdave
At this point I’m 75% here for Mark’s takes on 90s things.
UnknownPoster
I’ll put this here and in Castillo post. Using the logic the Reds want to send out a big money deal
Castillo+Suarez(and all $) to LAD for Gonsolin, K. Ruiz, Edwin Rios
I think CIN would want Lux, curious of peoples opinion if they think it could be done without him or D. May
