The Rangers announced Friday that they’ve acquired minor league right-hander Ryder Ryan from the Mets as the player to be named later from the Aug. 31 trade that sent Todd Frazier to New York.
Ryan, 25, was a 30th-round pick back in 2016 who landed with the Mets in the 2017 Jay Bruce trade. He pitched at the Double-A level with the Mets in both 2018 and 2019, working to a combined 3.51 ERA with 8.9 K/9, 3.9 BB/9 and 0.82 HR/9 in 77 innings — primarily as a reliever. FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen ranked Ryan 24th among Mets farmhands prior to the 2019 season, calling him a potential middle reliever with a consistently average or better breaking ball.
Ryan doesn’t factor prominently into any current ranking of the Mets’ top farmhands, but the Frazier swap still didn’t work out as the now-former front office regime hoped. The veteran Frazier struggled in his return to Queens, hitting .224/.255/.388 in just 51 plate appearances. His 2021 club option was bought out at season’s end, making him a free agent.

What a boring offseason thus far
marcfrombrooklyn
And, that’s a problem because _______? Do you earn a living based there being exciting baseball news every day? Otherwise, I don’t see why there needs to be excitement when no games are being played.

Triggered.
carlos15
It is a boring offseason. Can no one make a statement without some tool needing to flip out over it?
garhuff65
With a 100 day shutdown coming. No baseball till May. Spring training, season probably won’t start till July. Another 50 game season.
JayKay
We’re you expecting more in a offseason that was preceded by a shortened spring training and regular season do to concerns regarding covid-19? The same concerns that are still present among MLB personnel and players?
Regardless of if someone is “triggered” or not, you clearly felt it was necessary to share your own feelings regarding the offseason. The fact that you shared it at all shows that you clearly care about how you feel, otherwise you wouldn’t have bothered with such a prickly response in the first place.
That all said, I do at least respect and can understand (from my own POV) how lackluster this doubly slow off season could appear to certain individuals. I also can understand the harsh response, as your original post could be your genuine thoughts on these matters and having someone respond with what can come off as them being condescending. However, would it not be better to simply say that you are simply letting out frustration to the off season proceedings and ask the other person why they felt the need to respond as they did?
I digress though. I’m only myself and nobody else, so I suppose my words hold different weight with different individuals. Heck, I’m saying all of this to alleviate my own boredom at the moment, so the hypocrisy of my own words is not lost on me.
Anyways…

@carlos15 Might you be making false assumptions over the internet? Or are you sharing what your personal feelings are regarding my own words? Whatever the case, know that I offer to be someone you can confide in, should you find yourself feeling insecure.
RunDMC
I am guessing there’s no connection to Nolan. Dang.

I think the Mets should just let the season play out with some added SP. Then evaluate resigning Stroman, Thor, and Conforto and make a splash next offseason with a SS in Lindor, Correa, or Story. They can push for Arenado again if he’s not traded already.
findingnimmo
And waste another year of Degrom. I would rather not. See what it takes for arenado, sign springer, sign Paxton, maybe fill in with a risk reward type pitcher for number five or six rotation man, and get one of the top relievers preferably a lefty. That takes this roster to true heights. Get it done.
VonPurpleHayes
Haha. Go over the luxury tax in the first year? Risk not being able to extend Thor and Conforto? Still not guarantee 1st place in a tough division? Sounds like a good plan.
MetsFan22
Risk not being in first? Every team does that. No one is guaranteed a first place spot. Not even the dodgers are (I’m not saying they won’t). If the Mets think that going over the luxury tax the first year will get them far they will. Cohen said he has no problem with money
rct
@findingnimmo: So your plan is to add like $65 million or so in yearly salary with Arenado and Springer? And the Mets’ biggest weakness–by far–is the starting rotation yet your only plan is dumpster diving with Paxton (who was abysmal in five starts last year) and a lottery ticket #5?
deGrom is the only one in the rotation currently that you can count on. That needs to be the number one priority, not an afterthought.
jim stem
Mets have wasted too many years for players in their prime like deGrom and Wright.
Mets are moving in the right direction, finally. Boring off season? Keep in mind that it takes 2 sides to make a deal. Agents are in no hurry to sign. Teams are in no hurry to sign because they don’t have any idea what their revenue will be.
VonPurpleHayes
@Metsfan22 of course. and to be clear I think Cohen is having a great offseason so far. I was specifically referring to findingnimmo’s (great username) plan. I think that’s spending too much. The Mets don’t need to revamp the whole team. Springer and some SP help is all they need now, and it won’t break the bank.
MetsFan22
I agree but if we don’t do something now other fans will be like so much talk for nothing even tho it’s not we all know when the time is right Cohen has not problem getting a superstar. The wilpons never did.
rct
“we all know when the time is right Cohen has not problem getting a superstar. The wilpons never did.”
A) how on earth do we know Cohen has no problem getting a superstar? He’s gotten Trevor May and James McCann (who, incidentally, was a lower-priced alternative to a superstar, JT Realmuto) so far. That’s his entire track record.
B) The Wilpons never got a superstar? Mike Piazza? Carlos Delgado, Mo Vaughn (superstar in name when they got him), Roberto Alomar, Robin Ventura, Pedro Martinez, Mike Hampton? Carlos Beltran?!? Are you joking?

Super interesting guy, here’s a clipping from an SNY article on him from 2019: “The Indians wanted to draft him as a pitcher out of high school, and they saw this as an opportunity to take a kid with natural stuff but almost no wear and tear on his arm. The Indians drafted him again in the 30th round and agreed to a $100,000 signing bonus.” So, the Indians wanted to draft him out of HS, but he went to Chapel Hill instead where he was a 3b. The Indians then saw a chance to draft him out of college as a pitcher even though he hadn’t pitched since HS. Super cool nugget.
As for his stuff, he’s essentially a fastball/slider pitcher, but he’s growing at a super high rate. Over a two year period he added about 4 mph to his average FB velocity, and now he sits in the mid 90’s. He has “excellent” spin rate on his slider which like all his other pitches is still developing. He is a reliever, so that need for a 3rd pitch is very little (even though he has a below-average changeup). But he’s gonna be developing a lot over the next couple of years, and I’m here to see the progression.
As for stats, his era/fip stays pretty consistent with each other, and he’s typically around a 3.00-3.50 era guy in the minors averaged out (though he’s had some bad outings that really inflated that). He doesn’t give up very many hits, and the ones he does give up aren’t LDs. He’s kept a very low HR rate though when he first arrived at AA it spiked (since then it has fallen to well below average). Hitters tend to pull the ball against him, but I imagine that’ll be something that gets changes as his…
Mechanics get fixed. In the videos I’ve watched of, he sometimes falls off the mound glove-side as he’s pulling himself that way though with practice that’ll get fixed. He need to work on footing some and really try to stop his forward momentum a little better (leg day).
I see some really good potential here, and I think that since there is so little mileage on his arm, he’ll be able to be molded into a major league reliever within the next year or so. I expect him up by the end of 21′.
dtdt
Yes, yes, he’s an interesting arm, but i wouldn’t “expect” anything from him.
JohnJasoJingleHeimerSchmidt
He was a throw in to a trade in the middle of a shortened season. The Rangers weren’t getting a regular contributor for a month of Todd Frazier.
Actually, seeing the Rangers farm system, he MIGHT be one of their best prospects right now.
Rangers29
He’s not even close to being one of our top prospects, but good try.
You seem to always be awfully pessimistic, so think of it this way: We got that much for Todd Frazier himself. I’m fine with this, and I think he could succeed. *Could* is a big word, but he has been solid at each level and I expect him to continue that.
NYCPetrovic
Ranger – 25 year old AA minor leaguer with decent stats. Might be catching lighting in a bottle here down the road. Or might be a bust, not losing much here on this one.
JohnJasoJingleHeimerSchmidt
Nice motte and bailey argument.
You didn’t say could, succeed you said, “I expect him up by the end of 21′. But now that you have zero ability to back that up, you retreat to a much more defensible position.
Rangers29
Now your twisting my words: I did say: “I expect him up by the end of 21″, but I also said: “I’m fine with this, and I think he could succeed. ” Those are two different things. You can come up and not succeed or you can come up and succeed. Either way he’s still up by the end of 21′. Doesn’t mean he’ll succeed there, it just means he’ll be up. Quit twisting my words.
rangerfan4ever
Nice work. Love your analysis

What do we know about this guy? I hope he can give us some good innings.

I hope that Todd Frazier Round 2 is also the last round for the Mets.
By the way, did you know that he played in the Little League World Series?
Rangers29
Ya know, he’s a really nice guy.
oz10
He seems a little old for that.
JayKay
Did you know Todd Frazier is oldest player to play in the Little League World Series at 34 years old?
He was eventually declared ineligible and subsequently fined for providing a fake birth certificate and giving false claims, both of which indicated him as being 12 years old.
When questioned about his middle aged appearance, Frazier would always respond that he was a “late-bloomer,” and later after the charges, that he was a “kid at heart”.
bobtillman
A Mets castoff pitcher named Ryan?….ya, that never works out for anybody…..
angt222
I was hoping we kept Ryan & gave Gilliam or Nogosek.

The Mets record at trading away young pitchers named Ryan isn’t great.

Keep stuffing those prospects in the stocking, Rangers.
