The Mets are set to hire Dave Jauss as bench coach, reports Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter link). He’ll take over for Hensley Meulens, who was let go after just one season in the position.
Jauss, 63, has worked for MLB teams in various capacities since the late 1980’s. He has previously worked as a bench coach for four different franchises, the Mets among them. Jauss was Grady Little’s right-hand man with the Dodgers from 2006-07, then held the same position with the Orioles over the next two seasons. He became the Mets’ bench coach in 2010, working under then-manager Jerry Manuel. Jauss moved into the Mets’ front office in 2011 before returning to the field as a member of the Pirates’ coaching staff from 2012-19. That included another stint as bench coach, as Jauss worked in that role with Clint Hurdle for one season. He spent this past year as a scout in the Yankees’ organization after leaving the Pirates when Hurdle was let go, notes Tim Healey of Newsday.
Jauss’ previous stint in Queens saw him overlap with president of baseball operations Sandy Alderson and manager Luis Rojas. He’ll clearly bring plenty of experience back to the dugout as top lieutenant for the Mets’ second-year skipper.

Still a lineman and a defense end away from a run….

More big news out of Queens today, they still need an assistant strength & conditioning coach though. Carry on

If you add up the records of all the teams he’s held positions with, it’s a losing one. Unacceptable that the Mets are still hiring losers to help “win.”

Which “losers” have the Mets hired?

This is a dumb comment… He’s a bench coach, he’s not a manager or a GM. Get a hold of yourself
SalaryCapMyth
What a stupid way to evaluate a manager. You don’t do that when you acquire a player from another team. Imagine if you decided to not bring a player on because the total wins and losses of all the teams they’ve played for was a loosing record.

Absolutely! So many panic stricken negative commenters!

Anyone know why Hensley Meulens was let go?
champion1701
Bambam isn’t a good coach, idk why botchy stuck with him so long, he stuck in his ways.
RobM
He stuck with him because he was good.
champion1701
No he wasn’t. All the Giants bats regressed when he was batting coach and as bench coach he was awful. I am glad he wasn’t chosen to replace Botchy.
marcfrombrooklyn
He was hired to be Carlos Beltran’s bench coach and kept on when he was dropped and Rojas hired in his place. The speculation was that he was there for Beltran–he was hitting coach when Beltran was a Giant–and that his limited experience, two years as Bochy;s bench coach, was okay for 19-year major league veteran Beltran. Muelens’ only managerial experience was the Netherlands team in the WBC. They wanted someone with a lot of bench coaching experience for Rojas, who’d managed in the minors but had virtually no experience in the majors before last year. I think he was “quality control coach” in 2019 but that was it, other than through his father and brother.. In other words, the Mets felt that Rojas had different needs in a bench coach than Beltran, at least that’s what some of the reporters said at the time Meulens was let go. I don’t recall if Meulens was let go by the Giants when Bochy retired and he wasn’t hired as manager. He deserves a shot to manage somewhere. Perhaps Brodie and company didn’t want to replace him without seeing how it went with Rojas.

Meulens speaks 5 different languages -if you include gibberish, jive & sign -but unfortunately no one could understand a word he was saying.

BamBam had a nasty hitch in his swing and taught it to everyone else

Like the McCann free agent signing, bringing in Jauss can be viewed as a serviceable move but also a smart move. In Jauss’ case, he’s no “threat” to take over as manager, but he gives Rojas an experienced coach to lean on, which he needs. Meulens was supposed to be part of the Beltran team, so it was a bit surprising he lasted a year, but Brodie and the Wilpon’s likely didn’t want to fire him immediately because Meulens didn’t cause the unfortunate circumstances, and to be direct, they’d still have to pay him! It’s the Wilpon’s. Cohen is more concerned about building the right team, not saving a buck. He’ll land somewhere quickly.

I see that with this GM, Wacha, and McCann, Mets are still going second-rung. It’s all Alderson. I knew this would happen when he joined the fold.

Disappointed that Mets are wasting time and hiring medicore coaches. with little history to the Mets. After the Wilpons screwed over one of the all-time most popular Mets in Edgardo Alfonso, thought he would have been a candidate to be brought back by Cohen as a bench coach.
Alderson will screw this up (but Cohen needed him to get the sale approved) .because he still believes he is a baseball genius.
