The Brewers have a deal in place with righty Luis Perdomo, according to MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez (via Twitter). It’s a minor-league arrangement.
The 27-year-old Perdomo had been cut loose recently by the Padres. He’s expected to miss all of the upcoming campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
It isn’t clear just yet whether the accord has any special provisions (such as an option) for future seasons. If nothing else, Perdomo will be eligible for arbitration once again at season’s end, so the Brewers could decide to add him to their 40-man roster and tender him a contract if his rehab progresses well.
If he can fully recover from his elbow woes, Perdomo will be looking for a chance to prove that he can deliver consistent results at the MLB level. He has a standout, mid-nineties sinker that reliably produces gaudy groundball numbers, but owns only a 5.19 ERA in his 444 1/3 career frames at the game’s highest level.

This is the most Brewers signing ever. If I had to envision THE Brewers player, I’d think Perdomo.
The Brewers and Perdomo go together like money laundering and accounting. One’s gonna help the other, but the only way it’ll work is if one hides the other’s miscues.
mhendrickson61
That might be the most unintelligent thing I’ve ever heard
Rangers29
I didn’t say anything about being smart lol.
gbs42
@mhendrickson61 – Did you hear it or read it? Might want to reconsider your rankings a bit.
Nothing
LOL! Spitting straight facts!
pcoony
Certainly you could be right. But you could also be grossly wrong. Perdomo is a sinker ball pitcher who did relatively well as a Rule 5 starter with the Padres during two years when he should have been developing in the minors. His lack of consistency afterwards can likely be attributed to the fact that he never got regular work. I am really rooting for him to become a solid starter and rectify the Padre’s steal of Davies and Grisham
ShaneT
What???
dan55
Good for Perdomo. He had great stuff with the Padres, but he was wildly inconsistent. If he could improve his command, then he could develop into a solid reliever.
Tim_Buck-Two
I was sad to see him leave the Cardinals organization via rule 5 draft. This is an odd signing to report on though all we know is the Brewers signed him and he will miss all of next year. Surely the Brewers arnt gonna pay him much for the injured year, they have other needs to address with that money. They need more offense, like almost every other team in the NL central.
DarkSide830
surely its two years?
Gwynning
Maybe it is… and don’t call me Shirley! Grats Perdomo, hope you can find that consistency. Dude was always on the verge of something good.
HALfromVA
I got nothing. You’re welcome.
joester12
Signing a guy who cannot play the upcoming season makes no dam sense
DrDan75
This is exactly what the Padres did with Garrett Richards. They effectively did the same thing with Clevinger as well.
CNichols
Tampa did this with Nathan Eovaldi too and it ended up working out pretty well. In theory it makes sense for both sides because the player gets a place to rehab and the team can either spread money over multiple years (like with Richards) or get future value.
Especially here on a minor league deal, they’re probably paying hardly anything for the future rights to him.
DrDan75
I’m not sure what Clevinger signed for (and I’m too lazy to look it up), but I did read that he will get about $2 mil next season and then considerably more in 2022, when he is expected to be back in the rotation.
jeffmaz
Clevinger still had an elbow when the Padres traded for him. This isn’t the first time the Padres traded for a very soon to be injured player.
Gwynning
Another case of ‘Sh!t happens’ or are you passively accusing other teams of shipping damaged goods?
Deleted_User
Shipping damaged goods like the Red Sox and Marlins did?
SDHotDawg
Yes, that’s what the Padres did with Richards. Then they pooped themselves and ticked off Richards in the process by mis-using him.
Gwynning
Couldn’t agree more. We’re dying for starters, 2 arms short… and Richards doesn’t get a playoff start? He probably wins a game or two, we’ll never know.

Amen

This has to be a future a at least a 2 year signing
Jeff Zanghi
Not necessarily… he’ll be Arb-Eligible at the end of this season… so it could just be for one year and then they tender him a contract through arbitration next year. Granted it seems like it would be easier all around if they just signed him for 2-years outright BUT they don’t actually have to in order to have control over him for 2 more years.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Obviously this is a 2 year deal. The Brewers aren’t paying him just to rehab for 2021 and then take a chance on his arbitration salary. I’m guessing it’s around $2M-$2.5M over 2 years. League minimum this year and the rest in 2022 plus some form of incentives on top of that. Kind of crazy in this pandemic economy that these teams are shelling out the money they have so far. I think the FA gloom & doom predictions were a little premature. Good for Perdomo for securing an income while he’s on the shelf.
CNichols
It’s a minor league deal, so they might not even be paying MLB minimum and they don’t have to waste a 40 man spot on him.
They could have an option built in that they can exercise for 2022 that’s some predetermined salary, but if not then all I think that they would need to do is roster him next offseason, tender him a contract, and go to Arb. If they don’t like where he’s at they can probably just cut him loose.
lowtalker1
Tjs surgery can trigger a fourth option if exercised
But this dude is bad
This is the stupidest thing ever
eddiemathews
Well, if he isn’t any good he’ll never pitch in the bigs. What’s so stupid about that?
g4
This offseason was going to be his second year of arb. If I understand this correctly, because he got cut and will spend all next year on a minors deal, next offseason will still be his 2nd year arb? Not 3rd?
lowtalker1
Lol
Why? That’s hilarious
What’s his face is probably saying why did I sign long term with this team
bdpecore
You honestly think Yelich is upset that his team signed an injured pitcher to a minor league deal? Teams give out minor league deals left and right to fill out the rosters. If Stearns thinks Luis could be a contributor in 2022 then it’s worth paying him $50K for team control through 2022 (or possibly 2023 if they can be granted a 4th arby year).
troll
perdomo had 5 hits in 2017, 4 were triples
SDHotDawg
Good for Perdomo. I’m just happy we’re done with him.
Tim_Buck-Two
Anybody wanna take a guess at how good the Houston Astros would have been in 04-05 of they would have put Johan Santana on their 40 man roster? They should have worked that one out.
Had the Mets not let him throw what 150 pitches in that no hitter he would have made the hall of fame.
Gwynning
Perdomo, Luis. See also: Milwaukee, San Diego, St. Louis and ever so briefly… Colorado.
Zerbs63
As I Dodger fan I am sad to see him leave the Padres organization. Man he kept batting practice going into the game.
jay13
Good stuff but the body is not working with him. Im on the fence with this signing but like said before, a minor league contract can’t hurt. The Brewers need as much starting pitching as possible.
jbeerj
ZiPS has him at 0.5 WAR out of the bullpen (if healthy)in ’22. That’s pretty good upside for zero risk.
