The Phillies have a couple of high-profile names on their list as they seek a new front office head. The club will check on Theo Epstein’s interest in becoming its next president of baseball operations, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. It’s also planning to interview former Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill, per Ken Rosenthal and Jayson Stark of The Athletic. Philadelphia’s the latest team to show interest in Hill, who previously interviewed with the Angels and Mets for prominent front office positions. However, the Angels went on to hire Perry Minasian as their GM.
Epstein may be an extreme long shot for the Phillies, as he suggested when he resigned from the Cubs on Tuesday that he’s going to take a year away from the game. From the Phillies’ perspective, though, it’s at least worth trying to coax a three-time World Series winner and a future Hall of Famer into leading its front office.
Hill had an 18-year tenure in Miami’s front office before the club parted with him in October. While there wasn’t a great deal of team success during that span, it’s hard to place much blame on Hill, who spent the majority of it working under maligned ex-owner Jeffrey Loria and was at a payroll disadvantage. To Hill’s credit, he did help build a playoff team in his final year with the Marlins. Nevertheless, that wasn’t enough to save his job.
In heading to Philadelphia, Epstein or Hill would grab the reins from current president of baseball ops Andy MacPhail, who has become a placeholder as the Phillies seek a long-term answer. MacPhail plans to retire at the end of the 2021 season at the latest, but if the Phillies are able to find someone to take over for him before then, he’s poised to step aside. He and interim GM Ned Rice are currently running the Phillies’ front office.

Phillies should do whatever it takes to get Theo to come this year. He knows how to build a winner.

Step one: Lose a lot for a while.
DodgerNation
Well the Phillies have that covered already…
Dutch Vander Linde
Step two trade Bryce for prospects.
VonPurpleHayes
Bryce is one of the few things going well.
DadsInDaniaBeach
agree..seems to be a great teammate too..I’m very happy with that signing…everything we heard from other phans was just wrong…
802Ghost
So, best time to trade him for a rebuild.
VonPurpleHayes
They don’t need a full rebuild. They need to not collapse in September.
gwaid44
Can’t trade Bryce- No trade clause. Also, if we trade our best player and only LH hitter with power and OBP., then we are completely screwed
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
For the amount of money he’s worth, I disagree.

Phillies are the best at step one of any baseball team in history. There’s a reason why they were the first professional sports team in the US to get to 10,000 loses.
dimitriinla
Not sure what Epstein would see in Philly. Little potential upside to a job like that.
K3vin
Step 1 spend slot of money and buy a championship
Step 2 team suffers from bloated contracts
Step 3 Theo walks away to next team
DarkSide830
CHC doesnt have that many bad contracts, and few huge ones.
wordonthestreet
K3vin is clueless
bradthebluefish
Fake news. Cubs are consistently contenders. Cubs got sick and tired of winning.

This is the cycle of baseball. It’s designed to break up dynasties after the Yankees won 12 rings in 4 years, choking out smaller market teams, like everyone else.

I’m tempted to make an Epstein didn’t kill himself joke, but I’ll refrain.
Blackjackscout
I’m glad you didn’t.

Dump Hoskins, trade Nola for a haul and start over with Harper and Bohm
HappyLittleTrees
Only owed about 35 million for the next 3 years. Still quite young. It better be a HAUL. Not saying I don’t agree, but it needs to stock the farm with incredible talent to be worth it, if that’s the direction the new Pres wants to take things.
DarkSide830
yeah. Nola’s money on that contract.
VonPurpleHayes
They’re not trying Nola, who is an Ace who doesn’t break the bank.
wordonthestreet
Why would they trade Nola? Makes zero sense
awf1119
Epstein didn’t fire himself

If I was in Middleton’s shoes, I’d push hard for Hill. He’s done quite a bit with a horrible payroll. Traded away a lot of big-time talent whose pricetags were going to be too high to keep in Miami. Philly has deep pockets, so they have the payroll flexibility to hang onto a few of those type of guys.
MacPhail is over his head and has looked foolish on the best of days. Getting a guy like Hill (or Neander, fingers crossed) who has succeeded with next to no payroll may be the best route to take for a floundering front office with cash to spend . Happy painting!
DadsInDaniaBeach
Theo would be nice, but sounds like he does need some time away…No on Hill…
I used to admire Middleton, but lately I hear music in my head. “Fidler on the roof”

How about Red Sox PBO Chaim Bloom returning to his native Philadelphia following the 2021 season with Theo Epstein going home to Boston to run his beloved Red Sox once again.
My other cockamamie prediction has Theo switching jobs locally with White Sox GM Rick Hahn who was recently undermined by his owner with the hiring of manager Tony La Russa. Theo and his wife are happy in Chicago while Hahn grew up a Cubs fan in the northern suburb of Winnetka. Theo might like to finish his MLB career back with the Red Sox but the White Sox gig would have to be one of the best in MLB considering the elite young roster that Hahn constructed during his recently finished rebuild. Meanwhile, Hahn would get a chance to duplicate a similar rebuild with his beloved Cubs while also working for an owner with deeper pockets who hasn’t been afraid to spend at luxury cap levels.

Ridicolous

For those unfamiliar with the term, a common synonym for cockamamie is “ridiculous”. 🙂

Whoever is the new Phillies GM, Klentak set the bar so low it’s inevitable he’d be an improvement.
Phillies really need to build up the farm system. That’s why teams like the Dodgers do well each year. Lots of homegrown talent and having a keen eye when acquiring players other teams have given up on like Kiki Hernandez, Chris Taylor, Max Muncy and Justin Turner. The Cardinals are yet another example of a team with many homegrown players.
Can’t expect to build a team solely with FA and the occasional stud from the minors (Bohm). When we won it all in 1980 and 2008, we had a fair number of starters who came up as Phillies. Need to get back to concentrating on player development.
VonPurpleHayes
Phillies farm system has been terrible for over 100 years. The few times they had bright spots, they were able to win the World Series. They have always been terrible at developing talent. Everyone keeps saying “they need to build up the farm” as if it’s an easy task. They’ve failed at it for the better part of a century.
ChiSoxCity
I don’t see Theo Epstein taking another POBO position at this point. He wants to have a bigger impact on the game at large. Personally, I think he’d make a great Commissioner.
Aaron Sapoznik
Theo will have to wait a few more years. It’s harder to become the MLB Commissioner than a US President. There is yet another unwritten rule in baseball that states a candidate must be at least 55 years old and a friend of Jerry Reinsdorf. That’s why Theo will become the next POBO of the White Sox after Rick Hahn bolts to his beloved Cubs.
ChiSoxCity
Are you kidding? The White Sox are baseball’s version of Hotel California—“you can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave.”

Just get MacFAIL out of here!
