The Padres announced that they have designated right-hander Luis Perdomo for assignment and selected three players – righties Reggie Lawson and Mason Thompson, and infielder Tucupita Marcano.
Perdomo is off the Padres’ roster as they prepare for this winter’s Rule 5 Draft, but he actually first joined the team as a Rule 5 selection from the Rockies before the 2015 campaign. Perdomo has since given the 444 1/3 innings of 5.19 ERA/4.44 FIP ball with 6.74 K/9, 3.26 BB/9 and an excellent 57.3 percent groundball rate. Now, if any team takes on the 27-year-old, it could get him for two seasons of arbitration control.
Lawson was the 71st pick in the 2016 draft who ranked as a top 100 prospect that year. He made his Double-A debut in 2019 and pitched to a 5.20 ERA/4.14 FIP with 11.71 K/9 and 4.23 BB/9 in 27 2/3 frames. MLB.com ranks him as the Padres’ 10th-best prospect and gives him a chance to at least turn into a stellar major league reliever.
Thompson is not among the Padres’ top 30 prospects at MLB.com, but the site is high on Marcano, whom it places at No. 8 in the team’s system. The 21-year-old middle infielder “could develop into a serious on-base threat as a bat-first middle infielder,” per MLB.com.

Perdomo had a pretty good run as a Padre. Never spectacular, but I can only remember one outing against the Giants when he got shelled.
I hope he catches on somewhere after rehab from his TJ.

I was just going to say I’m surprised he lasted so long with them. Over 400 innings of 5.00 ERA ball.
dan55
His numbers aren’t great, but when you consider that he was a Rule 5 draft pick, he was pretty successful. He has good stuff, but he is wildly inconsistent.
Gwynning
@JD – just goes to show how bad we needed innings eaters for awhile… best of luck to Perdomo!
padreforlife
Good run over 5 era in 400+ innings ok
SDHotDawg
I’m glad to see that Preller finally ended his man-crush on Perdomo. I won’t miss him one bit. Maybe he’ll catch on somewhere as a mop-up or even short reliever.
petersdylan36
Not listed above is the fact that Perdomo just had TJ surgery and will be out all year
Probably will not be picked up by another team and will stay with the pads
jimthegoat
Can elect minor league free agency if not claimed.
rhendricks
Wasn’t Perdomo selected from the Cardinals?
jkoch717
You are correct. And I believe the Giants took him, then the Padres claimed him off waivers when he didn’t make the Giants’ roster out of camp. 2015 I believe.
jimthegoat
No the Rockies took him from STL then immediately traded him to the Padres for an undisclosed amount of $.
cygnus2112
Lake Bachar seems like a worthy Rule5 possibility now.

Was eligible last year, wasn’t taken and hasn’t had the chance to improve his stock in the past year because of the cancelled minor league season. Only player they should really be worried about losing is Ornelas.

They got perdomo from the cardinals

If they hadn’t foolishly put Luis Campusano and Ryan Weathers on the 40-man roster for 4 PA’s from Campusano and 4 outs from Weathers they would have roster spots available to protect Tirso Ornelas and claim Hunter Renfroe back from the Rays.
lowtalker1
Hunter is done

Pretty sure Campusano would have gotten more than 4 PA’s if he hadn’t gotten hurt as he was apparently raking at the alternate site. The Weathers addition for the NLDS left a little to imagination, but he didn’t look out of place on the mound in his inning and a 1/3.
And will any team be able to “hide” Ornelas on their roster for an entire season?
Deleted_User
The risk of Campy getting hurt and only ending up with 4 PA’s is a PERFECT example of why they were better off saving that roster spot for someone who needed it. They weren’t going to use him as a starter if he didn’t get injured anyway.
Weathers will have plenty of time to prove he belongs in 2021. The Padres needed that roster spot way more than he needed that inning and a third in the majors.
Why not? The Padres hid Luis Perdomo, Luis Torrens, Miguel Diaz and Allen Cordoba on their roster for an entire season.
mrpadre19
Ornelas has woefully underperformed(although still only 20) and has a broken arm.
Pretty sure the Padres believe he won’t be taken.
SDHotDawg
Weathers did OK in his very short appearance, but he still had no business being on the roster.
CNichols
Claiming Renfroe from the Rays would be pointless for SD because he can’t platoon with either Myers or Pham. He needs a LH corner OF to split time with.
Plus that’s not really a good use of ~$3.7M for next year. They should allocate those funds towards pitching.
SDHotDawg
Renfroe won’t be back. It was pretty obvious over the last couple years that Preller didn’t like him. And, he had a crappy 2020.
padreforlife
“Preller didn’t like him”
SDHotDawg
Yeah. It was discussed several times over the last three-four years. Even Langenhans pointed out that “Preller plays favorites.”
