The latest minor moves from around baseball…
- The Red Sox have inked right-handed reliever Kevin McCarthy to a minor league contract, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. McCarthy will earn an $825K salary if he makes the majors in 2021. The 28-year-old appeared in the bigs with the Royals in each season from 2016-20, and despite a meager 5.63 K/9, he recorded a 3.80 ERA/4.11 FIP in 191 2/3 innings. McCarthy has three seasons of between 45 and 70 innings under his belt, but after a 2020 in which he threw a mere six frames, the Royals outrighted him.
- The Angels have signed infielder Kean Wong and righty Jake Reed to minors contracts with invitations to MLB camp, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets. A fourth-round pick of Tampa Bay in 2013, Wong’s only major league experience came when he went 3-for-18 with the Rays and Angels in 2019. Wong does, however, own a respectable .286/.350/.413 line in 1,425 Triple-A plate appearances. The 25-year-old is the younger brother of free-agent second baseman Kolten Wong, whom the Angels have shown interest in this offseason. Reed entered the pro ranks as a Twins fifth-rounder in 2014, but he hasn’t gotten to the majors yet. The 28-year-old appeared at the Triple-A level from 2016-19, during which he logged a 3.68 ERA with 9.6 K/9 against 3.8 BB/9 over 164 innings.

Absolutely an Angels type move.
DarkSide830

AngelDiceClay
Since you and your Mariners will be spending the 2021 season in the basement.
Be sure to clean up after sleepy Joe.
Mlb1971
LaRussa can appreciate sleepy Joe as they are both too old for the job.
alproof
You stupid Trumpite idiot, L(oser)V96
Mlb1971
Only an idiot would support someone with dementia for the most powerful job on earth, but better sleezy Joe than the ho….

Just a bit

Mlb1971
Cora needs to take lessons from the Democrats to be better at cheating, not bitter just ironic…..
I prayed for Obama, so we would not get stuck with moron Joe. Now we have moron Joe and I am hoping we do not get the Ho….
Hay it rhymes lol.

I’m always rooting for Jake Reed he was a super nice dude in AAA with Rochester and I wish him the best
dan55
I guess this means the Angels are in on Kolten
ldoggnation
I still think they’ll get LaStella back. They can’t go “Wong” doing that.
Excel_1984
Hopefully the pitchers pan out!

Gotta be a Kevin McCarthy joke in there.
MWeller77
Announcer: “And the final score is Rays 10, Red Sox 6. We’ve got reporter Mike Microphone on the field with Sox pitcher Kevin McCarthy.”
Reporter: “Kevin, tough loss. How do you move forward?”
Kev: “The Red Sox won this game, so everyone who’s listening, do not be quiet!”
That kind of Kevin McCarthy joke?
WarkMohlers
Hahaha. That was great. Just didn’t have the energy.
Thank you for doing me the solid.
Mlb1971
Kevin McCarthy has more experience and better stats than:
Matt Hall
Jeffrey Springs
Robert Stock
Kyle Hart
Yoan Aybar (has not pitched above A ball)
….which are still on the 40- man roster for the Red Sox.
DarkSide830
Stock’s okay. i wouldnt complain if he came back to Philly.
Mlb1971
When the Rule 5 players are added to the 40-man roster in the next couple weeks (Mata, Potts, Rosario, Groome, Seabold, Wong), then as of now, two additional spots will need to be opened up. I would bet that two of the listed players will be waived in hopes of passing them through to AAA. My guess would be Aybar and Hall. (unless Pedroia retires, which is nothing less than giving up his 40-man spot until he would be put back on the DL/IL.)

Not that strikeouts are everything… but Chaim Bloom seems to be kind of obsessed with bringing in fringe relievers who don’t have even remote strikeout ability. This kid McCarthy actually seems like a more solid pickup than a lot of others Bloom’s brought in — but it still seems to be an odd trend when the majority of the league is going towards guys that K better than 9 K/9 that the Sox keep bringing in guys who have career marks no where close to that. I understand Bloom’s whole thing about building bullpens but acquiring underrated guys and reworking them etc. And the Rays have had tons of success doing this — just seems to be more than just a coincidence that the majority of P’s brought in thus far have really low K rates, comparatively. I
DarkSide830
to be fair, some teams also seem to dismiss guys with low K/9 out of hand, so you can get some bargains on these sorts of guys if you are prudent
JoeBrady
Osich, Springs, Kickham, Brice, all had K-rates of 10K/9, and a couple of others had 9K/9.
HalosHeavenJJ
We signed Wong! Nice depth.
whyhayzee
He was great in the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers! In fact that might explain what happened to the Red Sox last year. Pods took over their bodies and they played terrible.
Mlb1971
Whyhay – just way too many innings from non-prospect, AAA depth pitchers that were there only to eat innings….warm bodies….and stay under CBT.
Good theory though….they played like the old Padres, and no bullpen was no help when they were actually leading. It demoralizes a team when you are constantly loosing in the last couple innings.
