The Marlins have acquired right-hander Adam Cimber from the Indians for cash considerations, per an announcement from Cleveland. The Indians will receive $100K, according to Tom Withers of the Associated Press. Miami designated righty Jose Urena for assignment in a corresponding move, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Also a former Padre, the 30-year-old Cimber will now join his third team since he debuted in the majors in 2018. Although he only averages around 86 mph on his fastball, Cimber has generated decent results in the bigs, including during a 2020 campaign in which he logged a 3.97 ERA/3.99 FIP with a 52.4 percent groundball rate and a 1.59 BB/9. Cimber averaged a paltry 3.97 strikeouts per nine during his 11 1/3 innings of work (down from 6.51 the previous year), though, and the Indians then deemed him expendable when they designated him last week.
Cimber will go down as the first trade acquisition for new Marlins general manager Kim Ng, and he’ll try to help a bullpen that ranked fifth from the bottom in ERA and second to last in FIP in 2020. He’ll be an inexpensive part of their relief corps next year, as he’s projected to earn between $800K and $1MM in arbitration. Cimber isn’t due to reach free agency until after 2024, so he could be a multiyear piece for Miami.
Urena is the Marlins’ longest-tenured player, Craig Mish of Sports Grid notes, but it appears the two sides are going to part ways. The 2020 season, which could go down as Urena’s last as a Marlin, ended in ugly fashion when he suffered a right forearm fracture at the end of September. He concluded his season with 23 1/3 innings of 5.40 ERA/6.06 FIP ball and 5.79 K/9 against 5.01 BB/9. It was the second straight rough season for the 29-year-old Urena, who enjoyed a solid run as a viable innings-eater from 2017-18. But considering his performance since 2019 and his $3.8MM to $4.2MM arbitration projection for next year, Urena entered this offseason as an obvious non-tender candidate.

A fine move, yes yes

Yes yes

Nobody finna talk about Kim Ng first deal even though it small……Congrats Kim!
debubba
He lost favor in Cleveland. He was fine as a specialist but with the new three out rule he has become exposed and ineffective.
Ducky Buckin Fent
It was noted in the article, @Luc 2.
Looks like a good trade. I was kinda hoping the Yanks might scoop up Cimber. I like him more than Holder.
BovineCrab
You mean Urena, the guy that consistently intentionally hit Ronald Acuna Junior with pitches over and over again just make sure Acuna didn’t homer off him got DFA’d? What a surprise! A man in his late 20’s wanted to (and successfully did) injure a very young superstar barely out of his teens over and over for no reason than the youngster was talented? Then everyone realized he sucked so bad he couldn’t pitch and just wanted to hurt younger more talented players? Then he basically got cut from the team? Man, I am surprised. I thought Don Mattingly would have kept him just to make sure he broke Acuna’s wrist few more times… and tell everyone he was going to do it before the game. Again.
shimmy_rosenbloom
Stop crying bro jeez, you must be a Braves fan.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
About time the Marlins dump Urena!
Rsox
Marlins get a decent bullpen piece in Cimber. Wonder if anyone will claim Urena…
yankees500
I would highly doubt it. Him being DFAed all but confirms that he will be non-tendered. If any other team wants him I’m sure they’ll just wait a few extra days and have the ability to get him for less than $4 million
JAMES JACOBSEN
I dont think the braves will LOL
bravesfan88
Yeah, pretty sure that would NEVER happen!! lol..
Unless they did it solely to put him in minors purgatory for the rest of his career..lol
noraj9
HAHAHA
MarlinsFanBase
Well, the Braves might pick Urena up to keep Acuna from getting injured.
lowtalker1
He still has to look at that eye site of a stadium 81 times a year
lowtalker1
Eye sore of a stadium *
ludafish
Marlins park an eyesore? Jeter got rid of the HR sculpture and lime walls which were the only negative thing to that experience. Now there is absolutely no way it can be considered an eyesore.
BovineCrab
yeah. I personally have never been to the stadium but this is the first time I have heard someone consider it an “eyesore.” Maybe he is confusing it with Tropicana Field?

Great trade for the marlins
mlb1225
Kim Ng’s first trade. Not bad. Marlins have a really talented young pitching core and a handful of young bats. Would be funny if they signed JTR.
YakAttack
She isn’t mess Ng around.
MarlinsFanBase
The Marlins are my dark horse to sign JTR. They were trying to sign him long term and only traded him because he didn’t want to sign because he didn’t want to be part of a rebuild. Marlins made the playoffs, while the Phillies didn’t.
Get rid of the softball players
I hate to admit it but derek cheater is building a good team.getting rid of stanton’s contract was huge and he has been building his farm system with pitching.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Took a lot of flak from Marlins fans for that Stanton trade, but I think they’re appreciating it now. Guy knew when to pull the trigger.
bhambrave
The Stanton trade was fine. The Yelich trade was not.
DarkSide830
the Stanton trade was fine. the Stanton extention was not.
bravesfan88
Right, but ehh you win some you lose some..That’s the risk with every trade..

Win 2 a massive win for ozuna
drtymike0509
Agree. Jeter made the best out of a garbage situation created by Loria. He knew he was gonna sell the team, fleeced Miami on the stadium built on taxes and then, I believe, purposely backloaded the contact to limit his loss while creating the hype he needed to maximize his profits on the sale. Dude is scum, then had the balls to wonder why the city sued him after claiming he didn’t really profit at all from the sale. What a joke…
Dorothy_Mantooth
I don’t believe Jeter gave Stanton that huge deal. He has that deal signed prior to Jeter & Co. buying the Marlins I believe.
rm2916
Jeff Loris gave Stanton the huge contract not Jeter
Marlinsfan05
Idk if any of those prospects pan out, and yelich keeps under preforming for the next couple of years after getting that extention. We may have to rejudge that trade. Perhaps it won’t look so bad.
ludafish
At the time of the trade Milwaukee fans were outraged. I was a huge Yelich fan since we drafted him and I went to the first games played at Marlins park (UM v FIU and them UM v Marlins). Yelich hit a walk off single in that game. I didn’t think he would explode like he did and I while I don’t know if he will keep up the truly elite production there is no way he continues his 2020 numbers. Overall the trade is a loss but who knows what was out there. Harrison is the main hope to get any value but with the prospects and players Miami has who knows when he gets the chance. Brinson looked very good for a month before his usual dip. I still think both have potential just not to be everyday stars. I for some reason think Isan will amount to nothing.
BovineCrab
I’m not clear on the Stanton extension. Does it even exist? I read that the Marlins signed Stanton to a 13-year $325 million contract BEFORE they traded him. I don’t see how the extension hurt the Marlins since they traded him and I don’t see how anyone thinks the Yankees extended him after they traded for him. Am I missing something?
MarlinsFanBase
No, Loria signed Stanton to the contract long before the team was even for sale. Jeter and Co. inherited the contract.
I’m not sure how you could’ve missed it. It was reported all over the sports world when it happened because, at the time, it was the biggest contract signed in professional sports.
rxbrgr
Not bad.
sufferforsnakes
Yes, he is.
Captain Dunsel
If Adam doesn’t put on weight, the Marlins’ off-season could be Shakespearean……..Cimber-lean.
stretch123
Cimber is a nice piece. I do hope Jesus Aguilar is brought back. Sometimes it’s good to keep certain vets around and he certainly falls into that Miggy Rojas category in my mind… not to mention Garrett Coopers injury-proneness
ludafish
Craig Mish is saying don’t be surprised if they cut Aguilar loose. I don’t want to see him go just based on the personality he brought to the club. He really bought in to the vision the team has. Problem is they have Cooper as well and then Lewin Diaz for first. Coop can play right but he gets hurt a lot so maybe they want him at first. For right they have Jesus Sanchez and JJ Bleday knocking along with Brinson and Harrison looking for opportunities. If MLB would finally give us a decision on 2021 DH then this would be easier to solve as with a DH he absolutely returns.
DarkSide830
great pickup

Applause to Ng for her first ever trade, and a good one at that. I’ve liked Cimber’s work for a while and it’s nice to see him latch on to a very passionate team.
toastyroasty
Bye Jose. Please send us a postcard from the Dominican dirtlot league and let us know how you are doing.
rangers13
If Urena is non tendered Rangers should look at him as a depth piece, likely a minor league offer with an invite to Major League camp in Spring training. They should absolutely not sign him unless he is non-tendered.
drtymike0509
I think the red sox should be in the same boat. NRI for the spring see what he has to work with and fit him in accordingly if the results or tweaks work. Either/or starter or pen piece both needed and the price will be low…
Polish Hammer
Great pickup for the Marlins in pursuit of their AAAA title. Will the cash considerations be coming from change found in the ash tray or inside the couch cushions?

Did Jeter bang your gf?

She’s already better than Mozeilak
HBan22
Mozeliak is awful. Most overrated GM in the game.
Roll
For a depth piece, (ie minor league sign with an invite to spring training) i think the mets should be interested. He was solid for a back end of the rotation a couple years ago. So worth a flyer.
pdxbrewcrew
The Marlins have become Cimber-some to this world.
LordD99
The Indians are selling serviceable bullpen arms for $100K to the Marlins. That’s right, the Indians are so cash strapped they’re looking to the Marlins to help. Beginning bid for Lindor; $500K!
Dorothy_Mantooth
They had already DFA’d him so they were prepared to lose him for nothing. The Indians got lucky they got anything for him based on his recent results. I find it telling that no other team even offered a lottery ticket prospect for him, so the Indians must be happy they at least got some cash back for him.
Brac2brac
Ain’t a serviceable guy to them, so $100k ain’t bad. Wadda ya think the pandemic market price, a day before the non-tender deadline, is for RP with 86 mph fastballs?
angt222
Someone will sign Urena. Texas, Pittsburgh, etc.
hofmannc34
Redsox need to take a claim on Urena. He would learn quick from Pedro and the pitching staff
Dorothy_Mantooth
No one will claim Urena. He’ll clear waivers and become a free agent. Once he does that, it could make sense for the Red Sox to offer him a minor league deal, but I’m sure 10+ other teams will do the same. It might require a major league deal to secure his services, but it would be incentive laden and much, much cheaper than the $4M he stood to get awarded in arbitration. Something like a $1M base salary with up to $2M in incentives.
tribepride17
Great move by the Tribe. Cimber has nothing but an unorthodox undelivery. He throws 85
bravesfan
Urena getting let go is a tiny bit surprising! Watch some dumb plot twist where the Braves sign him lol! Dear god I hope not
Julio Franco's Birth Certificate
I just hope Dolan doesn’t realize he can get cash considerations for his roster, or else it’s Lindor to the Angels for nothing but $$$$.
Marlinsfan05
Idk if any of those prospects pan out, and yelich keeps under preforming for the next couple of years after getting that extention. We may have to rejudge that trade. Perhaps it won’t look so bad.
Marlinsfan05
So glad we finally let urena go…. she’s already winning with that move in my eyes.
ludafish
He just got so many opportunities to do something. He would give you a couple good games before just imploding. He has the stuff to be successful and couldn’t even do that in relief. With the amount of pitching prospects the fish have this is the right call.
UKPhil
Sad, but not surprising to see Urena go. He’ll have plenty of minor league offers and I wouldn’t be surprised if he re-emerged as a successful #3 starter for a few years. It’s also possible I’ll never hear anything about him again. Baseball is tough
MarlinsFanBase
No surprise about Urena. Marlins fans knew that was coming when all the young pitchers were coming up and holding their own.
