TODAY: Kim will be posted tomorrow, Jeeho Yoo of Yonhap News reports (Twitter link). The 30-day negotiating window for Major League teams to speak to Kim will then open at 7am CT on November 26.
NOVEMBER 13: Kiwoom Heroes star Ha-Seong Kim is one of the most intriguing names in this year’s free agent market, and he will soon become available to speak with Major League teams. The expectation is that Kim will be posted soon after the Thanksgiving break, Heroes general manager Chi-Hyun Kim told reporters (including ESPN’s Daniel Kim) today. That would put Kim in line to hit the posting market around November 30 or December 1.
The KBO League recently pushed its posting period from November 10 to December 14 due to scheduling changes stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, as opposed to the usual November 1-December 5 window. The exact date doesn’t really have any impact for Kim, as there is no longer any time limit on how long a player has to reach a deal with an MLB club. The newer posting rules instituted between MLB and the KBO League removed that 30-day window, as the new rules focus on the size of the posting fee received by the KBO team based on the value of the Major League contract signed by the player in question.
Kim’s official entry into the open market could impact the overall picture for other free agent infielders, however. Primarily a shortstop, teams might prefer to explore their chances at signing Kim before turning to other options like Marcus Semien, Didi Gregorius, Andrelton Simmons, or trade target Francisco Lindor. Since there has been speculation that a Major League team could also deploy Kim as a second baseman, third baseman, or as a super-utility piece all over the infield, Kim’s presence could also somewhat hold up the second base and third base free agent markets.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that Kim would be a cheaper option than proven MLB players, however. MLB Trade Rumors projected Kim for a five-year, $40MM deal (ranking him seventh on our Top 50 Free Agents list), owing the big numbers he has already posted over six full KBO seasons, his 25-year-old age, and the fact that he’ll have a wider market than some other free agents. Kim’s age means that teams who are still a year or two away from contention will be in the mix to sign him, plus those teams can also offer immediate everyday playing time, whereas many contenders have fewer glaring holes around their infield.
rangers13
Hopefully, JD is ready to make him a Ranger. He fits perfectly in Ranger’s plan and really blocks no one.
Rangers29
Can we both agree that Tejeda isn’t a viable future building block of this team? By the way your comment reads I’d assume that’s how you feel as well.
User 1104686089
Not sure how I feel about Tejada, maybe he would play better at 2B or a useful utility guy. Either way c’mon JD, get us Kim. I love Choo, I need another Korean ballplayer to get a jersey for!
Rangers29
It would be kind of funny to see us go get another Korean player right after Choo left lol. Hopefully Kim carries the same attitude that Choo had, he was a seriously great guy.
iang2424
Tejada is an interesting guy. Power and strong arm… in way too many ways does he remind me of Odor because of the swing and miss and low plate discipline. He still needs at least a full year in the minors if not 2 which at that time he’s put of options after 2022.
Rangers29
I am so intrigued by this guy, and I really… really want the Rangers to sign him. Rather than a 30 year old next off-season, sign the MLB rookie 25 year old who will be cheaper and that you can lock up for 5+ years. I’ve watched videos of Kim, seen his stats, and I just think he will translate really well to MLB play. (All the projections echo what I just said as well) He should be our premier free agent target this off-season, and if we make it happen it will help this team so much. I dream over having an infield of Jung, IKF, Kim, and maybe a Guzman platoon? C.J Cron? I might be dreaming, but I seriously think we could actually sign Kim this off-season rather than dreaming for players the likes of Rendon, Wheeler, Donaldson, Ozuna, etc last off-season. This one seems reasonable.
User 1104686089
I am hopeful that Huff moves to 1B and forces us to move on from Guzman. That would mean Huff has hit so much that it forces us to get the big man in the lineup… Also draft Jud Fabian please!
Rangers29
Yeah that would be nice. I could definatley stand seeing Trevino catch full time. He’s a fan favorite, and one of my personal favorites.
As for Fabian, he would be nice, but of course we need to see how the college season plays out. I bet at least two more guys will rival Rocker for the top spot in the draft and it’ll give us a nice group to choose from. Would also like to see some good pitching too. Hopefully our development sector has moved on from their “deceleration” work because almost every player who got on that program got TJ. The reason I bring up pitching is because I’ve watched so much of Leiter’s footage, that he reminds me of the Royal’s… Zack Grienke. Yeah. I kinda want him lol.
rangers13
Kim this year, Story next year for Andrus. Unless Guzman finally gets it together I can see Jung or Huff at first in 22. Gallo in RF, Taveras CF, Andujar in LF, Trevino behind the plate and I think the offense is good. Jury still out on Calhoun Sign Kluber and Archer to low base and high incentive contracts plus a couple of Desclfani, Quintana, Chatwood types to buy time for youngsters to get ready and perhaps pick up Urena or Jon Gray if non-tendered and we are on the way. I really like Solak, but if we get Kim then Solak becomes tradeable. In terms of Lynn, JD is on record as saying Lynn would primarily be traded for MLB player so whomever of Mets, Yankees, Rays, Jays Reds, Cards, or Cubs that dont get Bauer or Tanaka will become primar landing spots for Lynn. Yankees = Andujar or Frazier, Mets Davis or Nimmo, Rays =Kiermaier, Jays Gurriel, Tellez or Grichuk, Reds Winker, Cards-O’Neill, Cubs Scwarber, Happ or Bote and we will be looking pretty good I feel.
balkertexasranger
Love how we are all Ranger fans commenting on this post haha. But do you guys want to see Nick Solak at 2nd? I’m so ready for that if we can hopefully move Rougie
Rangers29
I don’t see how Kim would make Solak expendable. Kim would go to 2nd, IKF to 3rd, Andrus to SS, and Guzman to 1b to start next season. Solak is our LF right now, Taveras in CF, and Gallo in RF.
In a bearded ace trade (I have a challenge to not say his name for a week lol), I would package Solak and a reliever for a LF and maybe even another piece. I’d love to trade Solak, Bearded Man, and Montero to Toronto for Gurriel+.
(BTW this all rides on us trading or releasing Odor)
Then as the season progresses Andrus would progress more into a bench role as Jung and Huff come up. By the end of next season this would be our lineup:
Taveras
Kim
Gallo
Gurriel
Huff
IKF
Calhoun
Jung
Trevino
That’s scary. That’s a WC lineup at least, maybe even more.
Lastly, I don’t know why people are so mad at Calhoun right now. He was great in 19′ then he started off 2020 with a bang… right to the head. It has been uncomfortable for him this season, and he just needs a breather. I expect him to be good again in 21′.
Rangers29
As for pitching, I wouldn’t mind Archer and Kluber, but as of recently I’ve started to talk myself out of Kluber. 35 year old on a one year deal, he’s not in any way part of the future, and even if he is good again, what would he be traded for this deadline? I still like the idea of Archer on a super low deal. But the guy I have talked myself into is James Paxton. Injury history, i know, but if we could ink him to a 3 for 30-36 like we have with Bearded Man, Minor, and Gibson, I would be fine with that. Really good pitcher, and maybe we could recover some of his old usefulness that he had prior to 2019. I’d love to see it.
rangers13
I have warmed to the idea of Paxson as well as Garrett Richards or Tajuan Walker. If Colorado non-tenders Gray, he is young enough to fit into plans so a rotation of Paxson, Gray, Archer, Gibson, and Richards would be nice. AAA Cody, Benjamin, Allard, Hearns, King. AA Palumbo, Burke, Phillips, Winn, and Reagans would be nice depth. In LF, Gurriel would be the first target then Andujar and Nimmo. Perhaps Yankees would trade Sanchez for Odor and Leclerc/Martin. That would give them LH power bat and 2b, a controllable former closer or set-up and free them of Sanchez who based on many posts I have seen in various comment sections large percentage of Yankee fans would prefer.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
The cubs aren’t trading Happ for a rental. Thats insane. 4 years of control for 1 year. No thanks. Cubs are not in rebuild mode and are nowhere near that stage.
dgk71
8 million dollars a year or 8 million won? Either way to much for the Indians.
bravesiowafan
Def wouldn’t mind the Braves snagging this guy would be a great replacement for camargo or even Austin Riley at this point. I for sure think Riley hasn’t even come close to his peak but we need consistency now with the risk of losing ozuna’s big bat.
its_happening
Blue Jays being in on him would not be a bad thing. Have him and Bo compete for the SS role and whoever loses plays 2B with Biggio at 3B. Kim’s numbers at 3B on-paper doesn’t look appealing. If he’s close to being the hitter he has been it’s a huge pickup.
92jays
I could see the jays trying to sign him. We do need a 3rd baseman and let’s face it. Vlad will be a 1b/dh
its_happening
Kim had a .940 fielding percentage at 3B. Biggio can competently play 3B anyway. Vlad can (maybe) play 3B when a lefty is on the mound and Biggio is struggling or to give someone a chance to DH that game. But that hinges on how Vlad plays in spring at 3B.

Eric Thames and Darin Ruf performances after coming over give me great hope for Kim!
Hopeful that Ryu’s popularity in S.Korea translates to wooing Kim to join the Jays.
nailz#4life
Pirates should kick the tires on this guy as long as he doesn’t like to drink like Jung Ho Kang!
24TheKid
Was a 5 WAR player last season in the KBO, should translate to being a solid MLB player.
IjustloveBaseball
Could be a nice splash for the A’s–especially if Semien signs elsewhere. Additionally, if Kim is viewed as an option at 2B, it’d be another reason for Oakland to kick the tires on this guy–only 5 AL teams got less production from the keystone in 2020.
mlbnyyfan
If Rangers fans want to get rid of Odor then take back Stanton and let’s make a deal. I would like to see what Odor looks like being well groomed that hairy beast
Ducky Buckin Fent
Man.
Impressive. I thought your Judge for Hosmer proposal was the worst trade idea I’ve ever seen.
That was until you came up with Judge, Gleyber, & Sanchez for one year (lol!) of Lindor.
But.
Wow.
Stanton for Odor? Good gravy, man! Just so terrible. For real. Are you actually *not* a Yankee fan & this is just some next level trolling stuff?
Please say yes & restore my faith in humanity.
Rangers29
In all fairness I think the Rangers would turn this trade down because he doesn’t fit on the team and he’s expensive lol.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Odor makes 12 mil/season.
Stanton 22 mil/season (after Miami kicks in their share).
That’s not really all that great of a difference. If Daniels was offered that deal and he declined he should not only be fired but banned from the state of Texas as well.
Rangers29
Wow, I didn’t know Stanton made that little per season. That’s still a hefty chunk of change, but not near what I thought he made. I thought it was closer to 30. Yeah, we could find room for him on the team even if it meant trading Calhoun.
its_happening
I believe Stanton is a $25-mil luxury hit when you average everything out.
Ducky Buckin Fent
CBT hit = 29 mil.
Jetes kicked in 30 mil when he was traded. Like a good Yankee. 😉
So the Yankees or – in our crazytown trip example – the Rangers are responsible for 22.7.
its_happening
Yeah I thought the luxury was 27.5 with the Marlins taking an annual 2.5 with the Yanks covering 25. Either way it wouldn’t be the first time Texas carried that kind of weight on the roster.
filthyrich
AAV for the whole contract is $25m/season.
With the $30m the Marlins are scheduled to send counting as $3m/year in the final 10 years of the 13 year contract for CBT reasons.
According to Cots.
Cross checked with Spotrac showing him as a $22m luxury tax salary going forward, whether his payroll salary is $29m or $32m.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I’ve seen the Yankees share reported as both 22 mil and 22.7 mil.
I remember it was a pretty complicated money deal that got worked out. First, the Marlins wouldn’t have been responsible to cover anything if he opted out. But it’s not just a lump sum payment, either. It’s a series of 5 mil dollar payments that Florida has to make. Over the last several years of the contract.
Accountants & lawyers, man.
Ya know?
Either way, 22 mil is not very onerous in today’s MLB. Well…not sure about this year? But as of 2019 that’s really not all that much anymore.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Miami only kicks in that $10M this season. They don’t continue to pay $10M for remaining 7 years of his deal. Stanton is about as unmovable of a player as their is in MLB. The Yankees would absolutely jump at the opportunity to offload Stanton for Odor (or anyone else owed less than 20% of what Stanton is still owed). When healthy, Stanton is great. But the ‘when healthy’ piece is a serious concern for NY and will continue to get worse as he ages.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Not sure where you are getting your numbers from, @Dot.
Marlins are paying a series of 5 mil dollar payments that will total 30 million dollars. (Hence why the AAV = 22)
“They don’t continue to pay 10M for remaining 7 years of his deal.” I honestly have no idea what you are talking about here.
As for Odor for Stanton?
Yeah, no. C’mon. Don’t be such a red sox homer, bro.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I spent a little time watching the KBO this summer. Kim quickly became my favorite player.
He’s got a pretty interesting offensive profile; doesn’t K much, has some power in his bat, & can swipe bases.
Fun stuff.
Defensively he definitely looks very sound fundamentally. (I noticed that with a lot of the KBO players.) But nothing jumped out at me (good or bad) with the glove.
I think he’ll be a pretty decent MLB caliber player. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him use a low K approach to post a palatable OBP, 15 or jacks, & 20 or so steals. All while playing respectable infield D.
Lotta teams could use that. Matter of fact, there’s a ball club in NYC that definitely needs help at the keystone.
DVail1979
I agree … the Mets really could use help there
Ducky Buckin Fent
What are the “Mets”?
DVail1979
As a Braves fan I can tell you that they are an underachieving NL East team with a new owner who is willing to spend money .. I keep reading that things will change there now … I’m hoping everything changes for them except the underachieving part
Ducky Buckin Fent
So I’m hearing “unimportant”. That about right?
DVail1979
Can’t say I disagree
NMK 2
Not sure I agree with that. Even minus Cano, the Mets have plenty of infielders to shuffle around, including McNeil. Meanwhile, they have major holes in the pitching staff, catcher and possibly centerfield.
I like the idea of finding talent from alternative sources, but pony up the cash for JTR, multiple starters and at least one serious reliever instead of another middle infielder.
pustule bosey
I think he can fit in a lot of places but I’ll chime in that the giants could certainly use him seeing that they have been looking to build infield depth and grabbed a minor league guy to help out but as of 2022 will have longoria as the only infielder contracted and solano will likely come down to earth this year and I am sure they are listening on crawforrd and possibly belt this winter
Jeff Zanghi
I’d like to see the Red Sox make a play at bringing him in to play 2B. They’ve got an obvious need there with Pedroia all but retired… and the already have a very solid young core of offensive talent… adding a 25 year old with good bat speed and decent power would make for a really great offensive core group for the next 5+ seasons. And INF of Bogaerts, Devers, Dalbec and Kim would be great. Though given the presence of Jeter Downs in AAA, my guess is the Sox won’t be in on Kim, or any other long term option at 2B. But if they were open to trading Downs or moving him to the OF — I do think Kim could be a great fit for them for the long term. Just probably unlikely at this point. If they don’t go after Kim/another premier INF — then they should go all in on Springer. Despite their pathetic record last season… they really are only a SP, one bat and a handful of relievers away from being a legitimate playoff contender. (that also assumes E-Rod and Sale come back healthy) but given that fans won’t be all that patient to another season like last year (most fans, like myself, understood the need to get under the tax and that in the long-term the one year “reset” was a good thing) going forward… they can’t repeat what they did last year again this year… so given that they should have some significant financial flexibility this off-season… they really should consider making some bold moves — because as I said… Despite their atrocious record last year — they still have a VERY strong young core and are really only a handful of players away from immediately being a playoff contender. Maybe not a WS contender… but wildcard for sure. And to be as close as they are and NOT make the necessary moves to put themselves in contention, I think would be a Huge mistake. Because it would risk alienating the fan base should they struggle again like they did last year — even financially speaking — it’s in their best interest to be competitive next year even if it means spending significant $ this season… Because failing to do so risks losing more $ by potentially causing the fan base to lose interest. And once it’s lost, in Boston anyway, other sports teams (that are competitive) start to ‘poach’ fans attention, making it harder for the team to regain attendance/viewers even when they do compete again. The key is to always maintain their interest so when they do go on to have a big season, they’ve already got the ‘base’ to build on to maximize revenue.
hurricanewar23
Kim will be a ranger! It’s a perfect match
DVail1979
Yes … and then L Gurriel will be a Ranger also … It’s not like the Blue Jays know what they have in that kid right? Sorry I know you didn’t mention Gurriel but after seeing all the other Ranger fans drooling over Gurriel in their lineup … Just no … Toronto has like 7 SP options as it stands … They will not deal Gurriel for a package centered around 1 year of Lance Lynn
philsphan1979
Fans of all MLB teams are so delusional!! Every team across MLB “could use” a guy like Kim on their team, and I’m sure 90% of every teams is looking at this an upgrade. To say “I can see my team going after him” is idiotic. OF COURSE your team is looking at the possibility, so is my team, his team, and her team lol. Bottom line is the team who pushes the most chips across the table is going to acquire him. Good luck and everyone stay safe!
mlbnyyfan
@Ducky just looking to get that dead weight off my team. What’s wrong with possibly wanting Odor. His lefty bat could be useful in Yankees stadium

Might be a good fit for the Tigers. Him and Castro up the middle. That could move Niko to LF or 3B, depending on who shows well in the spring.

There is zero reason Seattle shouldn’t sign this guy.. With Stroman off the market, there isn’t anyone else out there that fits their need and timeline so perfectly. They have the budget , the need and geographical advantage.
Do it Jerry..
Dorothy_Mantooth
Kim would be a great addition to the Red Sox. He could play 2B until Downs is ready, then slide over to 3B or SS once they decide to move Raffy to either 1B or DH. Boggie could slide over to 3B and Kim could take over SS. If Kim plays well in year 1, it also opens up great trade opportunities for Boston too as they will have a lot of IF assets to make a deal with (Boggie, Dalbec, Raffy, Casas, Chavis & Downs).

How about the Angels? Typical Arte move.
There are more Koreans in LA than in any other city in America. Not only would this be a good baseball move, but it would be a good marketing move.
Not that there are a lot of Koreans in LA, but 100,000 extra fans is never a bad thing.

Wouldn’t he prefer the Dodgers though?
Blue Jays using Ryu and the stars of Kim’s Convenience to really charm him is my hope. Lol. Ryu is #2 on the Forbes South Korea fame list for 2020. I may not be out to lunch this time?!.
Dodgers, Jays, Angels feel like great communities for him to transfer into.
He may have a thing for NY for all we know?
The Dodgers won the posting when Ryu came over, but that was when it was a blind bidding system.
Kim should be able to choose his preferred team, likely creating a bidding war based on how many fanbases are represented among this comment section prior to this new update.
Excited that it’s going to be happening a bit earlier than expected!

There’s a huge Korean-American community in Arte’s backyard. He’d be smart to tap into it.

I’m really hoping the Giants make a strong play for Kim. I know SF has some fine infield prospects coming up, but Kim would be a great addition, and would be ready now.
BartoloHRball
I like his upside and relative value (based upon the numbers being tossed around) for most any club. I wouldn’t mind the Mets go after him, as they need help at all levels, and securing a possibly decently cost-controlled guy needs to at least be considered. They have enough in-field help already, but they could easily offload at least one guy as part of a package to get an arm back.
angt222
Curious if SF tries to move Crawford then Signs Kim as their future SS.

He’d be a good fit with the Yanks if we don’t re-sign DJL, non tender Torres AND can’t trade for Lindor. Idiots!
