The Diamondbacks and Cubs have completed the pre-trade deadline deal that sent left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin to Chicago for a player to be named later. The D-backs have acquired infielder Ronny Simon for Chafin, Arizona announced.
Still just 20 years old, the switch-hitting Simon tore the cover off the ball at the rookie level in 2019. Simon amassed 196 plate appearances then and batted .333/.411/.571 (164 wRC+) with three home runs, 14 stolen bases and almost as many walks (21) as strikeouts (25) over 196 plate appearances. Based on what he has done in the minors, Simon seems like a nice get for Arizona.
Chafin was a productive reliever for the Diamondbacks for several years, but with the team out of contention and with him nearing free agency, it made sense to part ways. The 30-year-old gave the Cubs 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball (including playoffs) but is now on the free-agent market.
Diamondbacks are seeking another infielder with the last name of “Simon”..
Team is hoping to revive Simon & Simon.
That would cast a Paul over their off season.
Thats only because Garfunkel isn’t available
It’s the Art of the deal.

This is all so Simple
Jeez. Losing a potentially nice prospect in return for 3-1/3 innings…
Why would a team trade for a useless prospect?
Develop better internally so these trades aren’t needed.
i mean those are DSL numbers and Simon was relatively old for a DSL player in 2019.
said rookie Level never said Dominican League- could be arizona League which is rookie ball
20 yrs old?
He’s 5’9” and 150lbs.
I think I passed a stool that large earlier today.
Accidental upvote.
Not a “nice prospect”, this is a total lotto ticket. He isn’t even in the top 50 prospects that the cubs had
Son of Randall
That seems like a pretty decent return for the Diamondbacks… I know that Simon hasnt yet played about Foreign-Rookie ball but he really dominated in his last season there (.333/.400+ OBP) and at the time of the trade Chafin had a 6.80 something ERA so they were really lucky to even get anything back. Then go on that he only pitched 3 Innings for the Cubs in the regular season and getting a lottery ticket like Simon who did really impress in FRK seems like a solid return
D-Backs reportedly also added money in the deal and the PTBNL would only be included if the Cubs were to reach playoffs. But, yeah, nice to have added something that put up decent numbers at whatever level.
To be honest, at first quick sight I did not see Chafin in the pic and thought “well, that dude looks a bit old for being a prospect”.
To be clear, those numbers were from the Dominican Summer League, which isn’t even considered low A level. It’s not even considered rookie level. He also repeated the DSL and was old for that level both years. Maybe you can consider him a lottery ticket, but he’s a real long odds one!
