Former big league pitcher Chris Young, who interviewed last week for the Mets’ GM vacancy, has now withdrawn his name from consideration, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Sherman suggests that Young was indeed intrigued by the position but prefers not to move his family from Dallas to New York at this time.
Young, 41, called it quits in 2017 after a 13-year career on the mound and quickly went to work for Major League Baseball. He was first appointed as the league’s vice president of on-field operations, initiatives and strategy, wherein he oversaw “the application of playing rules and regulations, on-field standards and discipline, pace of play and other special projects.” When MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre moved into an advisory role in early 2020, Young added “senior” to his title and took on a larger slate of responsibilities within the same realm.
There’s little clarity about the Mets’ ongoing front office search at this point. Young and former Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill were the two known candidates to have interviewed prior to today’s report. However, it’s not clear whether Hill was interviewing for the GM post or for the president of baseball operations vacancy that will now not be filled. Incoming president Sandy Alderson, who is returning after two years away from the team, indicated last week that he’d shifted gears and would now focus on hiring only a GM, rather than a president of baseball ops. New owner Steve Cohen acknowledged last week that he’s had some difficulty getting candidates in the door, as other clubs have denied permission to interview candidates from within their organizational ranks.
He’s tall, white, went to an ivy and was an “Ex crafty pitcher.” MLB is gonna make this dude commissioner, GM is beneath him. /s
The perfect resume for MLB owners
That’s an idiotic and unnecessary comment.
If you can’t satire MLB then who’s left clrrogers! WHOMST?
bkbkbkbkbkbkbkbk
I liked it.
Sadly, follow the paper trail. Follow the evidence. He could be Manfred’s heir apparent three to five years down the line.
Lame
Quite the other way, He’s not diverse enough. He’s not a gay black female in transition. Not getting any jobs.
So … new owner, same dumpster fire! Can’t even talk a guy who’s never been a Gm to take the job lmfao
Mets fans must’ve been hurt pretty bad to find pain everywhere they go 🙁
Yea I can’t even imagine how much hurt must be involved in being a Mets fan. Glad my team is consistently good
Angels and White Sox fans can relate to Mets fans, I think. .
And Pirates fans :/
Pirates fans are on a new level of pain
And Mariners fans 🙁
Who’s your team JB
Consistently good but never getting to the Wprld Series?
Is that dumpster fire in the Bronx, too, by any chance?
Moving from TX to NY? Yea no thanks boss!
I’d say the same for the opposite. Move to TX? Yea no thanks hoss!
You’d be a moron if you thought that lol.
I 100% think that, guess I’m a moron.
This dude really thinks TX is better than NY.
Another moron here. One of my best friends moved to Dallas from NYC recently. I have Montreal, DC, Tampa, Chicago, and…. Dallas on my travel list once this whole mess is over.
NY has 421 people per square mile while Texas has 109. Pretty sure that’s some kind of indicator that more people prefer to live in NY than Texas.
Sherman suggests that Young was indeed intrigued by the position but prefers not to move his family from Dallas to New York at this time.
Damn, I thought it was just the interview that was in NY, I didn’t know the job was too, Fuggedaboutit!!
Should have rehired Omar
Anyone know why Omar wasn’t kept in some capacity?
I find it tough to judge Omar with any real accuracy.
I consider his tenure as GM to have been pretty poor overall, but it’s impossible to ignore the effect that the Wilpons likely had on his decision-making. Would he have built better organizational depth instead of making shortsighted signings & trades if the team had better ownership?
so true
He did draft and develop pretty well as far as I can remember, but his overall roster construction was atrocious. No depth and too often brought in veterans that were at the tail end of their career.
Because he makes bad trades or influences bad deals. And his international success hasn’t exactly been stellar, either.
Very simple, he is a Wilpon lackey.
Alderson knows Omar. Perhaps they didn’t get along and he was only there because the Wilpon’s wanted him there? The Mets also were cleaning house to change the culture. Omar might have been fine but was swept up and out as part of the purge. Happens in business regularly.
The problem is that everyone knows that Alderson will not give the new GM any power and will want he or she to just nod and agree with everything Alderdon does with the “promise” that the GM will replace Alderson eventually.
Is this based on anything factual? Here’s a quote from an article when they announced that they wouldn’t actually be hiring a POBO: “Alderson, 73, announced in his re-introductory presser on Nov. 10 that he did not plan on making baseball decisions; he expected to have a seat at the table but did not expect to be seated at the head of the table. Though Alderson said on Monday he still does not expect “to get down in the weeds,” the initial vision for his role has now changed.”. Does that make it sound like he wants to be micro-managing the GM?
Yeah micromanaging doesn’t appear to be his style. Sounds like he likes to assign roles to team members and trust their judgement to carry out those roles effectively on their own.
Fffbbb knows it all. I trust his investigative journalism.
but everyone also knows Alderson is only in his position for 2 years, he took it as a bridge to the next true exec
you have described jeff wilpon, not sandy alderson
OMG, why cant this organization just be normal for once !! ffs
They are being smart, taking their time to find the right candidate the Wilpons would have hired the cheapest person they could get
Ok, so this clown didn’t think of that before he interviewed? And on top of that, without any experience he gets an interview as a favor to Rob Manfred who pushes his name for the job, and then he “withdraws” giving both the team and the commissioner a black eye? Like, it’s beneath him? Good luck getting another interview genius.
I read it as just his excuse, but it’s likely something else related to Alderson.
He did. He decided he didn’t want it post the interview for whatever reason. Not wanting to uproot his family from Texas to NY was simply his public excuse. It’s going to be really awkward when he accepts a front office position from the Yankees in the coming months. j/k
He would’ve been someone everyone in the Mets organization would look up to.
I don’t blame him. I wouldn’t leave Texas for New Work either.
Couldn’t he just remote in? Make the occasional visit when necessary?
“So Mr. Young, how would you like to be a member the the Mets organization?” Mets front office
“I wouldn’t touch you with a 39.5 foot pole” Chris Young
Starting to feel the Christmas spirit there, TwoTone? Usually the honeymoon lasts longer than the few weeks Cohen has had. The bad feelings returned already! smh
Always. Merry Christmas to everyone on MLBTR :-).
How about Bartolo Colon?
I would really like to see Bartolo become a pitching coach one day!
He would have to learn how to speak English first
He also took a liner off his head from Pujols.
Young must think he can land a better job next year. Mets situation could be a mess 11 months from now.
I’m a Mets fan and I would NEVER move my family to another state for a job in the middle of this mess unless that job was all I could get to pay the bills. I get it, family first.
My job was in GA and my family in New York. Did it for years for my family. In this case, he could come to NY and his family could follow in the summer. I wonder if he’d even have to be in NY. Alderson and Cohen have yet to even meet each other, conducting all business by Zoom.
Perhaps one of the problems is top candidates realize the job will be remote at the start and that will be a greater challenge to get to know the org and recruit personnel. Looking at it that way, if I’m a top candidate, I might wait a year to give myself the best chance to succeed.
Thank god. Stay in Dallas forever & be happy.
Some guy who interviewed for a job with the Mets he didn’t want, told the Mets he didn’t want it because he didn’t want to move. So, basically nothing in anyone’s life changed. This is a non-story that was stretched into three paragraphs.
Maybe he didn’t want to go through the vetting process. Or was it a post interview discussion that turned him off.
I live in queens, ny ( nyc). Who in their right mind would want to move here now….at least wait until america’s most useless mayor is gone in 2022
Rudy’s already gone, I thought 😀
Rudy did a good job as mayor. He cleaned up organized crime on the street level and helped transform Times Square (which was a dumpster fire) into Disneyland. Also handled post-9/11 pretty well. However, I’ve lost all respect for him being the lunatic he is now.
But Rudy’s gone though (pretty much)
Another reminder that this is one of the worst run franchises in sports. Getting an uber rich owner and the retred Alderson won’t transform it over night. That’s irrespective of any 2021 on field progress.
Waaaoooo !!I read so Many negative comments here that i wonder if you guys really deserved a Fan owner like Steven Cohen . Be patient !! and stop writting so Many nonsense !!
No kidding
Complainers like to complain. Yes, Ricky 1986, it will be nice to have a fan who is also your owner. Nelson Doubleday was like that but the Wilpons pushed him out. They thought they knew better too because Fred played high school baseball with Sandy Koufax and Jeff was
A von
Was a bonafide minor leaguer.
People are leaving NYC…not moving there. Sorry Mets.
