2:24PM: Toronto also has interest in J.T. Realmuto, according to Sports Grid’s Craig Mish (Twitter link). While the Jays have a fair amount of catching depth already on hand, Realmuto would obviously present a big upgrade over current starter Danny Jansen, backup Reese McGuire, and top prospect Alejandro Kirk. If the Blue Jays did sign Realmuto, it’s fair to assume the Jays would shop at least one of their in-house catchers to other teams.
12:32PM: For the second straight offseason, the Blue Jays are checking in on a wide range of free agent options. The club has already been linked to George Springer and DJ LeMahieu, and now The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (subscription required) adds that Toronto has spoken with representatives for Michael Brantley and Justin Turner, and the Jays also made an offer to Kevin Gausman before Gausman accepted the Giants’ one-year, $18.9MM qualifying offer. Going beyond only established big leaguers, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reports that the Jays have interest in Korean shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, noting that Toronto has “evaluated him closely.”
Beginning with the position players, Brantley, Turner, and Kim would each cost less than the likes of Springer or LeMahieu. MLBTR’s list of the offseason’s top 50 free agents had Brantley and Turner right next to each other in the No. 13 and 14 positions, projecting the two veterans for similar contracts — Brantley a two-year, $28MM pact and Turner for two years and $24MM. Kim ranked seventh on the list due to his younger age (25), projected for a five-year, $40MM deal and another $7.625MM in a posting fee to the KBO League’s Kiwoom Heroes.
Brantley turned 34 in May and is seemingly less of a positional need for the Jays since he has exclusively played as a left fielder or DH over the last five seasons. Toronto already has Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in left field and a Vladimir Guerrero Jr./Rowdy Tellez tandem penciled in for the first base and DH roles, so a Brantley signing would to hint that a trade could be in the offing. Guerrero has been vocal about wanting to play third base again, so conceivably the Jays could find room for Brantley without a trade, but it doesn’t seem too likely that the team would install Guerrero as a full-time option at the hot corner.
Turner or Kim would be the easier positional fit since either could immediately slide into the Blue Jays’ open third base spot. Turner just celebrated his 36th birthday yesterday and, like Brantley, continues to swing a powerful bat into his 30’s. A return to Los Angeles is certainly possible, however, as Rosenthal writes that Turner “still appears to be [the Dodgers’] first choice” in terms of infield additions, though they perhaps couldn’t be ruled out as a potential suitor for LeMahieu. While Turner’s positive coronavirus test during Game 6 of the World Series and subsequent post-game return to the field to celebrate with his Dodgers teammates adds an inescapably strange footnote to his career, Turner won’t face any league discipline for the breach of COVID-19 protocol.
Signing Kim would be perhaps the most intriguing move possible, as unlike Brantley or Turner, Kim would be seen as a long-term building block to a Toronto organization that is already stocked with young infield talent both on the MLB roster and in the farm system. While Kim could play third base immediately, he is also a well-regarded defensive shortstop, so the Blue Jays could experiment with trying Kim at short and moving current shortstop Bo Bichette to second or third base (with Cavan Biggio playing the other position).
Adding Kim might also made it more feasible for the Jays to trade one of their top infield prospects, with Jordan Groshans, Miguel Hiraldo, or Orelvis Martinez probably more likely to be moved than 2020 fifth-overall pick Austin Martin. Since Martin is also a multi-positional threat, the Jays might try to develop him as a center fielder if Kim is signed to bolster the infield picture. The Blue Jays (and the 29 other MLB teams) will get their first chance to directly speak with Kim after his 30-day negotiating window opens on November 26.
While possibilities abound on the position player side, pitching is Toronto’s chief focus this winter, so it isn’t surprising that they made an early pitch for Gausman. Rosenthal reports that the Jays offered Gausman a three-year deal worth roughly $40MM, though the right-hander instead opted for the one-year deal to remain in San Francisco. Should Gausman deliver another good season in 2021 and then return to the free agent market next winter, he’ll surely receive offers beyond the two years and $21.1MM he left on the table to accept the Giants’ qualifying offer.

Turner would be a great fit on the Jays. Would rather have him than DJ tbh.
George Greenleaf
Good thing you’re not in charge of the team then.
turner9
Why so rude to the guy who just happens to like Turner over DJ, hes allowed to feel that way and he never once said that’s what Atkins should do.
Need a puff my man?
bigdaddyt
I would rather DJ but feel Turner fits more into the current plan and fits the jays timeline much better. If DJ is going to command 5 years compared to Turners 2 give the jays prospects time to develop. Also really want Kim
22Leo
It’s tough for me to imagine Turner wanting to leave the Dodgers, and his presence alone makes me think the Dodgers would want to keep him. Stranger things have happened, though.
cheeese
Ya Turner would fit as a really good 2 year stop gap if they decided they wanted to keep groshens as the future 3b.

My hope is for Bauer and Kim. I would be a very happy Jays fan , we can figure out CF later

CF needs to be addressed immediately. The last center fielder they had that was a game changer was Devon White. That was decades ago.

Vernon Wells? Typically above average bat, 4 seasons with an OPS+ 123 or higher and 3 gold gloves

Vernon had many game changing moments.
So did Pillar.
Can’t imagine VW would have 3 gold gloves if they only gave 1 to a CF in his prime. Torii Hunter was his Kiermaier.
Would Devo have taken the Gold Glove over Puckett/Griffey/Lofton under a 1 CF rule? I think so. Extremely biased though.
Would be a fun what-if scenario to dive into some time.

Yep it is
Amen to that. Every free agent “ they check on”. Wind up 95% of the time signing some scrub.

I liked Ryu signing. Ray is a scrub for sure. He has his moments but is not a difference maker.
Here are the difference makers that Toronto needs to sign now:
Lemahieu or Turner
Springer
Bauer, Brad Keller, and/or Tanaka

ALDS teams: Yankees, Rays, Astros, A’s.
Out of 240 games started, a quick estimate has about 40-60 started by arms that aren’t difference makers.
With a beefed up bullpen and/or contributions from youth in the rotation, a team could survive with some inning eater types filling out the staff.
More appealing paths exist for sure, but adding a vet that can eat innings isn’t a total recipe for disaster.
Could see enforcing the bullpen as a different path to playoff contention.
The bats were resilient, and the pen had moments of resilience, but if they could be lights out like the Rays pen, that could be a 5-10 game swing.
Rather see everything enforced, but expecting to see a few areas left unchecked.

Rangers29
Pls don’t get Kim Jays…. I want the Rangers to sign one good player this off-season, and he would help the re-build a ton. Thank you.
davemlaw
I think Marcell Ozuna makes a ton of sense for the Rangers. Great bat and he can DH part time. Because of his perceived defensive liabilities he can be had at a reasonable price. I think 5/$100M is reasonable or slightly below.
Rangers29
He does, but at the same time he doesn’t. We have Solak in LF and Calhoun at DH right now, two guys who JD is wanting to give a lot of playing time to next season. Ozuna would play either of those positions hence pushing one of those guys out of the lineup. And we might be able to trade Lynn for a LF and replace Solak that way, not to mention Ozuna’s age and price… I don’t think it will happen. (Because JD said they don’t want to add any big contracts this off-season, it’d be nice though)
Kim on the other hand, is cheaper and younger. He would most likely play 2b next season if we trade or release Odor (very likely). He is around the same age as the rest of the core of our team, and he would be getting into his prime during our next playoff run. Our infield next season would be IKF, Elvis, Kim, and Guzman, which would be a step forwards from anything we’ve ran out there the past 4 years. Then in 22′, Huff and Jung come up and replace Elvis and Guzman in the lineup and moving our rebuild forward in the process.
its_happening
Move Solak to the infield, release Odor anyway, sign Ozuna. Problem solved.

Wonder why Gausman didn’t take the Jays’ offer. Unless he looks like an absolute stud this year, I don’t think he’s going to find an offer longer than 3 years.
The Giants’ president had said that discussions of reworking the QO into a larger deal were not a priority, so I don’t know if the Giants end up offering more than another 1 year deal to Gausman.
I would have taken 3/40 over a one year QO, but Gausman must have had his reasons. Hope he is able to parlay the QO into a larger deal for himself at some point.
its_happening
Wondering why the Jays are high on Gausman. They could’ve had him in 2019 if they felt he was that good despite an off year.
Jean Matrac
Scottn59c:
“…I don’t know if the Giants end up offering more than another 1 year deal…”
Not sure I understand. Do you mean another one year deal next season? That certainly depends on what kind of season he has. Otherwise Gausman isn’t going to be willing to tear up this year’s contract for a one year deal for less money.
Plus I think when FZ said a multi-year deal wasn’t a priority, he meant, time-wise, not actually doing it. I think that makes sense with Gausman turning down the Jays. It’s possible the Giants and Gausman have an understating on the parameters of a multi-year deal, but haven’t crossed all the T’s etc. I think FZ wants to devote his time now to higher priority issues and will circle back to Gausman later.
davemlaw
Gausman was offered 3 years/$40M. That’s a lot of money and he is taking a gamble on himself. But good for him.
Begs the question, what would it have taken to sign him to a multiyear contract? 3/$45M? There had to be a number. Or was he thinking a longer deal? Not really important but it does justify the Giants Qualifying Offer in that Gausman had a lot of interest and was offered a multiyear contract despite the QO.
TrillionaireTeamOperator
$45- $18.9M is $26.1M… I am guessing Gausman figures if he’s good enough to earn the $18.9M next season and the offers he received were based on a depressed market and one great come back season for him and that baseball will be back to normal levels of attendance and thus team incomes in 2022 and beyond, he could easily get 2 years/$30M on the open market at that point and as a durable pitcher with upside, might get as much as 4 years/$80M if he maintains his numbers from 2020.
Suddenly 3 years/$40-45M is chump change if he can parlay that into at least 3 years/$48.9M if not 5 years/$98.9M.
WarrenSpahn
Most pitchers are just one pitch away from a UCL tear and TJ. if the choice is 3/$40M or one year at $19M, how do you leave $21M on the table with his history and almost-complete lack of pedigree?
smuzqwpdmx
Well, it’s not like he’s going to starve if his career ends tomorrow. He can afford to place an unwise bet on himself. Perhaps that self-confidence is worth more to him than the money.
I do feel sorry for his agent, though.
Prospectnvstr
WarrenSpahn: Granted that pitchers are more likely to have serious injuries than position players. However, every pitcher doesn’t get serious injuries. Let’s do some easy math:(’21) 18.9 (’22) 15.5 (’23) 12 (’24) ? or 2.5 Buy out. Just using those diminishing numbers the next m seasons come to 48.9 million. From an athlete standpoint it makes perfect sense to bet on yourself. From an everyday guy perspective, I’d take the guaranteed 3 yr deal and my wife and kids would be set up for life.

curious that MLB decided to not discipline Turner and/or Doyers for the mask-less partying post-game 6 celebration. maybe it would have just killed the vibe and Manfred felt like he had pissed off enough people already…

In my opinion, Brantley doesn’t make much sense because the Blue Jays already have a starting left fielder and a starting DH. Kim is too risky for the Blue Jays to sign. Turner’s defence will probably decline.

it would be interesting to hear if Ryu has been involved with scouting Kim. He would likely have some interesting insight. Possibly also a reason for Kim to pick the Jays over another team- instant mentor
its_happening
Hate to spoil the fun but does anyone remember BJ Ryan? If you do, slow your roll on the Ryu hype. It’s only one year and the Jays need him to be solid in his final two years.
So far the Blue Jays are looking to stall in 2021. The #1 name they should be tied to and going hard for is Bauer. The #2 name is any potential trade partner for a top pitcher. The priorities are starting pitching and starting pitching. With the short-sighted signing of Ray and now showing interest in Happ they seem to show little interest in competing in 2021.
Realmuto is an upgrade and it allows the Jays to deal Jansen and Kirk. McGuire can be the backup and let Moreno develop for another year or two. I’d rather see the Jays deal with the Cubs for Contreras.
jimmertee
Jays are deep in catching prospects. Moreno looks good. I like Adams too. If Kirk could do a Vlad Jr and lose the weight, he might be a very good MLB piece right now.
I agree that without pitching they are going nowhere in 2021. They need two upper tier starters in addition to Ryu. Bauer, Kelller, Tanaka.
It is critical that the Jays be solid up the middle. They need to improve defense in CF and SS.
DarkSide830
Keller? as in Brad Keller? he’d probably take a nice haul to pry away, KC could use that stabilizing factor going forward.
HairyKooz
No he wouldn’t.
turner9
So what do you say is the minimum the Jays have to do to compete?
Low end
CF JBJ, SS Kim, SP Tanaka?
High end
CF Springer, SS Kim, SP Bauer?
Also we can always trade for a TOR SP at the deadline with our prospects if we signed kim alone. It makes 3-4 of our best INF prospects obsolete just like the 3-4 C prospects we have
Let’s not ignore the fact Bichette and Guerrero JR are kind of expandable as well given the sheer amount of guys behind them that can play their position. Let’s say Bichette wont sign an extension next year or Vlad for that matter. Maybe we trade them for uber elite prospects of the SP and OF variety that are near ready, the Jays then have a new young core of Groshans , Orelvis, Kirk, Pearson, Manoah and whichever elite prospects they could acquire.
I’m excited being a Jays fan for the foreseeable future no matter which direction they go
its_happening
Kim is not guaranteed to be the SS over Bo. I think they should compete and split time at 2B and SS in Spring. It might not take that long for the Jays staff to figure out who the better SS defender is.
If the Jays acquired Kim I wouldn’t necessarily go after JBJ or Springer. Perhaps a 3B and move Biggio to CF is an option? That would mean unloading Grichuk which will be difficult unless that 3B is Arenado. Hard to imagine a team taking on Grichuk’s salary. That would leave Teoscar as the guy to deal but many are fearful of losing him. I am not if it means a pitcher or a 3B in-return.
I do see your point regarding the current players bringing a return. It’s something they might consider sooner rather than later if they cannot contend for at least a Wild Card. Tampa is becoming vulnerable with the recent rumors and the Yankees might be too if they can’t address their positional needs.
Joe Carters walkoff
You forgot to mention Martin. Excited as well. However i wouldn’t trade Bo but it wouldn’t pain me to move Vlad.JR
Rsox
Jays are not going to give up on Vlad Jr. After what basically equates to just a little over one full season in the Major Leagues, same for Bichette. Biggio offers enough versatility to move around that the Jays can play around the diamond a bit.
CenterField is definitely an area in need of an upgrade so JBJ or Springer could certainly be in play
Jean Matrac
Rsox:
Agree about the Jays young guys. Not sure about CF though. Springer and JBJ are very different players. JBJ is essentially a glove-first guy, whereas Springer’s bat is exceptional, but I don’t think he’s capable of playing CF everyday anymore. Springer needs to be moved to a corner.
Brac2brac
Toronto is a very nice city, but top end FA won’t go there for anything less than a fair sized over-pay. All things being equal and they sign with top US clubs in a place they want to live. Add in that Toronto won’t be making top end offers and you know why that’ll get 2nd tier players in almost every case. Just the facts of the matter.

What city will host the Jays for the 2021 season, and don’t you believe any potential free agent is going to wonder the same thing?
Marius
Realistically, I think they’re out on the big names. They are definitely doing their due diligence but I can see the Mets, Angels, Yankees ponying up for the top tier. Nothing wrong with that, just think the media is creating false expectations for Jays fans
Jean Matrac
Marius:
Well maybe the Jays won’t spend what it would take to land any big names, but I’d be less surprised to see them spend big, than I would the Yankees. Everybody always assumes the Yankees can, and will spend, but they’re on record as saying they want to get under the CBT threshold. They probably won’t even re-sign DJLM.
If the Yankees spend this offseason it would make for the third consecutive year over the threshold moving them into the 40% bracket. Plus, they were $37M over in 2020. That’s dangerously close to the level where they would lose draft picks and incur addition surtaxes.
Very Barry
Toronto needs to slow down a bit with the pursuit of guys like Realmuto and other elite high $$$ free agents. They need to take another year to access exactly what they have and don’t have with their young guys. Vlad Jr. appears to be more of a good hitter than an elite superstar talent with the added caveat of being best suited as a DH.
Rsox
Jansen can’t hit. McGuire can’t hit. Kirk probably needs more minor league seasoning. If the Jays can get Realmuto on a 2 or 3 year contract than why not? Anything more than that they would be better spending elsewhere
coldbeer
Why would Realmuto sign a 2 or 3 year contract with any team?
Jean Matrac
Not sure why so many believe Gausman turning down the Jay’s offer means he will pitch for one year/$18.9M. It’s not guaranteed to play out that way at all. FZ said he wanted to sign Gausman to a multi-year deal. Now that Gausman has accepted the QO they have all the time in the world to tear up the QO deal and reach agreement on another. In fact, that Gausman rejected a multi-year deal suggests there may be the framework in place with the Giants.
OilCanLloyd
With regards to the Rays and Snell. The Jays need to stay on the sidelines and sit this one out. The Jays should hope that Snell is dealt. The benefits of the trade won’t be seen for a couple of years. Jays would move into the #2 seed in the ALEast and a good shot at the wildcard.
smuzqwpdmx
Snell contributed practically nothing of value in 2019 and the Rays still won 96 games. They overcame a ton of injuries in 2020 too. Their depth is what makes them so good, so losing one player isn’t going to matter much.
coldbeer
Sign Bauer, Springer and trade for Arenado. This is very feasible and would immediately escalate the Jays to world series contender status.
its_happening
Excellent ideas.
Except it isn’t going to happen and you shouldn’t want that either. When Bo, Vlad and others come up for arbitration these contracts will still be on the books and Rogers will never, ever, ever go over the luxury tax. They never have and never will. Grabbing Bauer and one of these guys would work. But all three means you are dealing Vlad (and possibly others) in two years while Springer loses a step in CF and Arenado continues to age.
jaysfansince1977
I would be more interested in a trade scenario for Bryant than Arenado if Bryant is not non-tendered (as has been speculated on here)
jimmertee
Bryant stinks. He is on an early decline. Avoid.
jaysfansince1977
That may be so, but is still a better option at maximum roughly 19 Million than Arenado’s(who also had a troubling 2020 season) 35 million 2021 salary!

You are not a good GM if you do not check on all free agents even if you are not signing them
its_happening
Nice tidbit of information. Unfortunately what you said is not true. You can check in on every team and still mess up with overpaying players, bad trades and bad draft picks based on saving a buck or two. But I guess if you call 29 other GMs to say hello then you are a good GM in your book!
jbs32
That’s not what they said at all? They didn’t say checking on all free agents made you a good GM. They said you are not a good one if you don’t. Meaning its literally the bare minimum. Good GMs don’t dismiss moves before even exploring them. The move you never thought you’d be able to make are sometimes the most impactful.

Blue Jays could easily add 78 mil in contracts in 2021 and only have an active payroll of 144 Mil. and still be under the tax threshold by 39 Million with roughly a minimum 20 million coming off the books for the 2022 season( the $ via Spotrac and Shaw being non-tendered)
